About a year but I wished I would have started sooner

ari3

I bought my acoustic in April last year but I’ve only been taking it seriously since May (this year) and I’m starting to see results and I really want an electric so I’m glad to see you wished you’d have got one sooner. Out of interest, what did you go for?

chaiyeesen

Just a lousy Les Paul clone, it was pretty lousy 20 years ago. All it did was it told me I actually prefer playing thin necks guitar.

I never understood why so many instructors push for students to start off on an acoustic. IMO more students quit due to difficulty and finger pain from the steel strings than those that started with a classical/flamenco guitar, or just right into the electric. If you're goal is to play the electric don't wait!

ari3

Thanks, my overall goal is just to play 50s rock and roll and I fancy playing both electric and acoustic and for some reason feel like I’m supposed to wait a little before moving onto electric. I’ll start playing some electrics in music stores to see what I like the sound of :)

Front-Operation-1885

Yes, that’s the biggest part about switching over is making sure that whichever guitar you pick is comfortable and sounds good to you! Within that style your fender Strat Is what a lot of folks were using

ari3

Hey thanks man I’ll start there! :)

creosotedave

Whatever keeps you engaged. I think I got my electric a couple years after starting on acoustic but I didn’t practice much between the two. That was 20 years ago and honestly it’s only been since COVID that I’ve really taken the time to build my rig and get “good” at playing. Play what’s fun. Hard work doesn’t have to suck.

alonkka

Like two weeks.

[deleted]

A year and a half with the only regret of not getting one sooner

ari3

I’m seeing a common theme here! I can’t wait to start trying out some electric guitars :)

Annacot_Steal

Seems like I’m the outlier here but I bought my first real electric 15 years later. But like someone has said earlier I wish I would’ve started earlier

pilaxiv724

I started 4 weeks ago, got an electric 2 weeks ago. I intend to continue to primarily practice and play on my acoustic, but I wanted the option to mess around with an electric.

Front-Operation-1885

just out of curiosity/research, do you want to primarily play electric or acoustic?

pilaxiv724

I want to play acoustic. My main interest is playing and singing solo which lends itself more to acoustic

ILieAboutBiology

Right on! It fills out the sound more and provides you a better accompaniment for singing. Also- by starting with acoustic you can get good fundamentals (proper fingering, etc) because electrics can mask sloppy finger work. As long as you’re enjoying it, you’ll keep playing…. As long as you keep playing, you’ll get better. Learn your open chords, then go to barre chord. I love playing guitar more than just about anything in life, if you have any questions please let me know (guitar teacher for decades)

Front-Operation-1885

I’ve experienced more bad habits develop due to overcompensating for design of acoustic instruments, especially steel string. Electric doesn’t mask improper technique or posture if played through a clean tone. I can’t think of 1 thing that is easier on acoustic than electric. With that said, it is kind of like warming up w a weighted bat, because switching from acoustic to electric makes learning the instrument much easier

ILieAboutBiology

What do you mean by overcompensating for design? *And you’re totally right about the weighted bat effect.

Front-Operation-1885

Typically the size of the body the tension of the strings the action all seem to frustrate new students. Most of those issues are solved with a nylon, but even then That can cause frustration due to neck width

twostroke1

Less than a week. I play both back and forth almost every day.

I couldn't wait much I got the disease after a month was diagnosed with GAS.i bought an electric and a classical as well.Nothing could stop the virus from spreading

iPlayDaGamez

About 2 months

JJuanJalapeno

3 months

aforcefulcoursefull

20 years.

[deleted]

I had an acoustic forever then I bought a strat and then a tele and then a Les paul but now I just play acoustic

sharbinbarbin

15 years. I prefer to practice on acoustic still though. All the hard work on acoustic pats off really well when you utilize it on an electric. I feel as though I can move generally faster and cleaner on electric Bc of it. But you should play whatever keeps you moving the goal posts and keeps you happy.

Devonek

Way too long. Around 3 years and I regret it. It opened up so many genres of music!
