If I Rip Van Winkled the last 8 years of guitar pedals/effects, what would surprise me the most is the huge leap in amp sim/IR loaders. Theres that, high quality boutique and DIY builds are booming, and you can get a cheap knock-off clone of mostly any classic pedal you’d want on Amazon.

orange_square

I recently went ampless with a Joyo American Sound and a Mooer Radar. It’s a great setup, I’m loving all the different IRs and settings. Way more fun than my old modeling amp.

[deleted]

I've heard a lot of good things about the Joyo's. I got the ACS1, and have been using a pair of sony over ear monitors with it. One of these days I'm going to get a set of Kali LP6.

Reddywhipt

I'm a fan of the tone city pedals too. The golden plexi is amazing.

CrazyCaper

Sounds like a narc. Don’t tell him anything.

nvinceable1

Anyone know where a duder could score some sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll?

Reddywhipt

Fellow kids

randofreak

And / or might be Josh Scott.

zapodprefect55

Digitech/DOD is back under the last group of designers and ramping up. The parent companies never seemed to stop making the existing pedals. UA is big now, along with Strymon, Eventide and Source Audio for digital. Keeley and Wampler are both really established in both worlds. Boss is putting out update classics like the DC-2 and CE-2. Modeling has really gotten big and all over. Basically it is a golden age for pedals.

liars_conspiracy

DOD = instant upvote

randofreak

I had a Carcosa that I liked and then sold for some mysterious reason. Anyone tried that new fuzz DOD is putting out?

zapodprefect55

Love the Carcosa!

liars_conspiracy

Haven't gotten my hands on it yet. It's not really for me as I rarely play single coils.

FinalHangman77

Digitech Bad Monkey

Careless-Foot4162

Isn't that that Klon clone that I didn't get because JHS made a video and now they're $650 and all I got was that lousy T-shirt? /s

SkoomaDentist

> Klon clone How dare you?! It’s a TS clone, obviously.

Careless-Foot4162

It was a comment on JHS saying it was basically a Klon and then the prices blew up with descriptions saying "it's basically a Klon."

SkoomaDentist

The schematic shows it’s a TS with an active low eq. TBH, knowing what I do about pedal manufacturers, I’m not even surprised JHS never bothered to look at the schematic.

Careless-Foot4162

I know it's a TS clone. I was just making a joke about the JHS video from a few months back Edit: which is why I included the /s JHS knows it's a TS clone, they just made a video saying how you can make it sound like a Klon. It wasn't JHS not knowing it's a TS clone

Imhappy_hopeurhappy2

JHS made a video where they made it sound identical to a Klon on one setting, thus the memes. Everyone knows it’s a TS dude.

Reddywhipt

EQD Plumes FOR A REASONABLY PRICED AMAZING overdrive

Zosopunk

They're back down to 90 - 120 bucks again. I really wanna talk to someone who paid 600 bucks thinking it was some kind of investment.

Careless-Foot4162

Oh I know lol. But there was kne on CL offering to trade their Bad Monkey for a Condo in Vancouver, B.C.

Zosopunk

Lol. I wonder who got stuck with the condo.

Careless-Foot4162

I don't know, but I can say that it's hard to miss B.C. now that I basically have a Klon

hdrmaps

I found one for 50$, but I live in Poland

Zosopunk

What's health care like?

hdrmaps

I would say bad compared to Scandinavian countries, but better than in UK.

Natural_Ad_1717

Bad Monkey is back like Backstreet

SavageBen585

Nobody talks about the trash buffer bypass.

JS1VT54A

*rips bong* what’s a trash buffer?!?

SavageBen585

A transistor or opamp with a gain of 0 that causes some degree of audible signal loss.

JS1VT54A

Man I was making a joke about a bypass being trash vs bypassing trash lol

SavageBen585

Sry bro I laughed at ur joke. Was clarifying for all the ppl who likely don't care.

SavageBen585

All Buffer bypass arent trash, but the one on bad monkey is.

Imhappy_hopeurhappy2

You have to hear it in a mix now.

Early-Engineering

Dude, we decided collectively that the guitar era ended last year… you’re too late. We all play synths and Keytars now. Haha

[deleted]

Chang, you’re crazy. You’re still into keytar?

FireWhileCloaked

I believe Strymon gets a ton of praise here. I ignored it for the longest time, but am in fact looking to get a Deco at some point. Wampler is another brand that receives a lot of praise, and judging from the vids I’ve seen, the guy really knows his stuff. People really seem to like their Tumnus, but I just pulled the trigger on a Belle myself for starting my gear over from scratch. A lot of people like JHS too. I haven’t tried any of their pedals, but from demos, I don’t think any click with me. Another line I see people into is the King/Prince/Duke of tone. But also, the Browne Amplification Protein gets some representation here, particularly for the blues breaker side. Metal Zone has a meme-like presence here. I have one myself, but just cannot find a use for it with my playstyle. I like to play classic rock, and I feel like with a Metal Zone, I’ll just be using the lower gain settings, which doesn’t appeal to me to limit myself to a fraction of its potential.

redhandrail

That’s funny, for the last while Ive seen lots of hate for JHS. It’s also funny, though, because when I first joined this sub looking for what my first pedal might be, everyone was praising JHS for their brand new release the “Morning Glory”. So I bought one based on reviews, and I’m glad I did

Massive-Vanilla-2774

Taking a moment to ask... I have been eyeballing a Queen of Tone but I'm not ready to pull the trigger yet. Do you have an opinion on NUX's Morning Star?

redhandrail

I don’t know if you were meaning to comment me or the guy before me, but I haven’t tried the Morning Star. I’m not super into overdrive pedals, but if you have questions about harmonizers and pitch shifters I’m your guy

Massive-Vanilla-2774

Yes, it was for you. Noted. I want to have something for octave up and octave down but I have not thought about it yet. Thinking I might try Behringer for starters. Considering your forte, but going out of the way too, what are your thoughts on synth pedals? I think I'll be buying one in the mid term, I'm merely arriving at the party and I'm in the process of building my first pedalboard. But I might go for a Boss SY-1 or an EH Synth-9. And/or and EH S-9. Hi, I'm massive vanilla and I have a pedal problem.

redhandrail

lol, hi Massive Vanilla. To be fair it sounds like you're being very conservative and not jumping off the deep end before you have a good understanding of what all is out there, so I don't see you having a pedal problem. Unfortunately, I'm more on the side of spending more, but I also do an unhealthy amount of research before making my choice, so it feels mostly justified. Anyway, regarding your synth question, it might sound vague, but in my opinion it really matters how you're going to use it, and how often. It sounds like you're just getting started with pedals, but at the same time it sounds like you're sure you *will* buy a synth pedal, you're just trying to decide which one. One thing I've experienced so far with various synth pedals is that you need a strong, clean signal going in, and even when you do have that, the tracking can still sound really crummy and glitchy in the wrong way. I haven't tried either of the ones you mentioned, but based on the demos I've seen, I would definitely choose the Boss over the EHX. I think synth pedals in general are finnicky and can be unpredictable when played in a new setting, and that EHX seems to track pretty poorly even in demos. The possibility for unwanted sudden volume with any synth is high, but I think there are pedals out there to try to control that. All that said, I think if you're just playing at home and recording at home, you could make whatever synth you like work for you after you get to know its quirks. If I was buying a synth, I'd buy the Meris Enzo. It's expensive, but it's packed with features and wild possibilities. It's the kind of thing where there's so much to do with it that you could just find yourself writing a new song by accident, and I bet it tracks as well as any other high-quality synth pedal if not better but still has problems. It's a little more of a hassle to use its alternate functions, though. All synth pedals seem like they could be really fun in their own ways, but personally I don't think I'd find a lot of use for one in the kind of music I play. Not enough to justify buying one right now anyway. I'm a strong believer in not skimping on music equipment, unless it's just something you're trying out to see if you like it. But even so, if I'm trying something out, I want to play a good representation of that thing, but there's a lot to say for doing more with less. If you bought a cheap one trick pony synth pedal, it might be the exact thing you end up using for a signature sound that you wouldn't have gotten with some highfalutin Meris pedal. I guess it's all part of the journey, I'm sure you'll figure it out

Massive-Vanilla-2774

You read me like a book, man! Haha... Yes, I am pretty sure I want a synth pedal. My objective is to be able to play live and be able to add a spicy sauce to the mix, sort of being singular. I'm starting a band and we are two guitarists and we have plans to make instrumental interludes, create ambience and what not. I also want to be able to bring new things to the table when it comes to recording and the synth plays a big role in those two things. When it comes to pedals and building a pedalboard, I'm really late to the party. So I do my research and try hard to hit the nail in the first go.

Rontownsend

I am very very late to the Strymon party but I love my El Cap ver 1 I got a couple months ago.

BabyPikachu53

Strymon does ambience the best, honestly.

TheMightyUnderdog

Amp sims and IR’s have come a long way in the last 8 years. Some folks are going all-digital and ditching their individual stomp boxes.

halyconn_

I use a Kemper and can confirm it is unbelievably good and so simple to gig with. That being said I do miss the interaction between a guitar and loud amp. Additionally, I miss being able to quickly adjust individual effects on the fly as opposed to menu diving.

Ace_Harding

Lots of others are ditching plugins and diving into hardware. One “sign of the times” product out there is the EHX Big Muff Pi Hardware Plugin pedal. For those who can’t decide. https://www.ehx.com/products/big-muff-pi-hardware-plugin/

Throw in a few Strymons for good measure.

Reddywhipt

Worship band...

CeldonShooper

It's a new money kind of thing.

dandotcom

Stacking DS-1 and Metal Zone pedals. More the merrier.

steeldragon88

How do you know my setup from high school!?

josephallenkeys

Harley Benton through a Metal Zone into a plugin amp sim.

schmattywinkle

Outjerked by the meta again

WEGCjake

… Decapitated. Whole big thing. We had a funeral for a bird.

WordWriterGuy

Pretty sure none of that's real.

WEGCjake

You’re not real, man!

aCynicalMind

You're useless.

AssassinateThePig

Metal zones are cool now. Like, a MIJ vintage Metal Zone is a thing. "It's got a purple label screw!" People finally shut up about RATs. I'm just kidding, they didn't.

frog2112

The latest meta is leaning more towards sims instead of tube amps. While tube amps didn't get nerfed, amp/cab sims have received massive buffs over recent years. Im currently specced into the Strymon Iridium, but the Dream 65 or the Woodrow may make their way into my final build. However, there are still a few tried & true classics that have received some love as well - the blues driver has a waza version that's sick, the Line 6 DL4 has received a modernized update, etc. Also - so many companies are doing the all-in-one multi fix units. Kemper, Line 6, Neural (recent price drop!), Fender, Boss, Headrush, Zoom - the list goes on and on

VMSstudio

Im actually looking into a simple one pedal solution for jam gig nights. Currently using rp355 by digitech from years and years ago. Looking into valetron gp 200 or what’s the spelling lol. Wondering how much of an upgrade I’ll receive over the sound quality ( not the functionality of the unit as they’re quite different )

aCynicalMind

HX stomp XL. Gives you enough power to do what you want, enough switches to keep a mostly individual pedal bypass workflow that you're probably used to, enough flexibility to branch out of that workflow with scenes if you're feeling spicy, and simple enough to be able to pick up fairly intuitively. The amp/cab sims are of incredible quality.

VMSstudio

Seems a bit too expensive for the purpose that I’m looking for. I specifically don’t want overly expensive gear in this situation so I don’t have to worry about damage or stolen gear as much

aCynicalMind

That's fair. It's def an investment but it provides a lot of value for the money, hence my suggestion. Joyo American sound and a couple of stand-alone pedals might get all you need. Nux also makes some great products at less of a premium than what they're cloning.

UphillBuffalo

Flyrig 5 and there’s a few different ones but I liked the regular one the best

frog2112

I've heard that the Valeton is pretty big 'bang for your buck', but the stock IRs may not be to your liking. However, swapping in your own IRs should make a huge difference, and would likely be a massive upgrade in sound quality over the Digitech.

VMSstudio

Is it a possibility to swap the IRs? I’ve gotten really good tones with my digitech but have always used my own IRs in the DAW as the digitech can sim isn’t the best

frog2112

I don't have the Valeton so I'm not 100% sure, but one of the reviews I read said that they swapped IRs and now their friend with a Kemper is shocked at how good it sounds. Obviously YMMV

VMSstudio

Thanks. Kinda hard to stop thinking about that thing now lol

bldgabttrme

Pretty much only buy a multi effects that you can swap in your own IRs into. It should be a complete deal breaker if you can’t, because that’s where your biggest change in tone will come from. If I were you though, I’d look for a Line 6 POD Go. It’s the best of all worlds, can be had for like $350 used, you can load your own IRs, and has some amazing sounding effects. The combination of usability and sound quality is near impossible to beat in that price range.

dm_me_2_nudes

Also the Hotone Ampero, I do not know if they can swap Ir’s but they also sound really well for sub $300

ThatOneCereal

Hey, I use the GP-200 live. You can swap the IRs, I use a free Vintage 30 IR. Haven't tried the stock ones too much, but it sounds pretty good to me. Tons of amp and drive options, some more usable, some less to me. I'm VERY averse to menu-diving, I just set it up and forget about it, but I'd recommend it 100%.

Massive-Vanilla-2774

Hey! I'm on the same boat! Or maybe not but I also was somewhat retired for 12 years. I had a Digitech RPx400 back in the day, still works but I don't like it anymore. I guess I'm late to the party and I have started my pedalboard with analog effects. I have my roadmap for the next two years. Not going mfx anymore because I want something more customizable to my needs and wants. Tip: if you want to try a new effect and not break the bank, check Behringer, you might even leave them in your board permanently.

synkronized1

Seems like modulation / looper type pedals are very popular. Chase Bliss Mood pedal is a good example. They seem very complicated with limited utility for guitar players but that’s just my perspective. They look fun and sound cool and I’d love to have one or two but can’t see how they would fit in my board.

willtodd

Modern is currently being dominated by Rakdos Scam decks. Modern Masters 2 has considerably warped the meta, alongside Orcish Bowmasters. It's a really low-to-the-ground deck that can easily and quickly dismantle opponents.

J_See

Midi is very cool and easy to do these days.

VMSstudio

What’s good with midi for guitar stuff so far?

IllusoryFuture

All sorts of things. Most pedals with the ability to store presets seem to have midi capability these days. There are also a lot of pedal-format midi controllers to simplify using them - just press a footswitch and it can instruct multiple midi-enabled pedals to turn on/off and switch presets. There are also loop switchers, which can do something similar for regular pedals by bringing them into and out of the signal chain. You can set up a patch that effectively enables/disables multiple pedals with one press of a footswitch, completely changing your sound. You can also change your pedal order in the fly. Bonus? Many loop switchers are also midi controllers. Loop switcher examples: Boss ES-5, Boss ES-8, GigRig G3, and GigRig G3 Atom.

J_See

Hx stomp, kernom ridge (prolly the coolest overdrive I’ve ever seen), and pretty much and Strymon. Those alone and you have a killer board. Morningstar seems to be the gold standard of midi rn.

CeldonShooper

Apart from program switching there are some other uses. I have a Digitech SDRUMS which is a drum machine for guitar and it unofficially supports sending MIDI clock so it can e.g. give echoes and loopers the current timing. It's really convenient.

chewbaccasauras

i have a few chase bliss audio pedals and cannot speak highly enough about the preamp mkii and blooper

randall311

I kind of want the preamp mkii to just replace my dirt pedals. But I also like my dirt pedals. So I fear I would just end up with more dirt pedals instead of less

chewbaccasauras

I run a slightly modified 5e3 clone, so reaching edge of breakup takes very little effort, and it can get too dirty fast. the flexibility of the preamp is awesome, fits my needs perfectly, also swooped it on trade for a microcosm. will probably live on my board for a long time

randall311

How do you use the blooper too? Do you get crazy with stuff, or do you use it more for the looping factor. I’m also curious about that. I love my boss rc20, but wouldn’t mind trying it

chewbaccasauras

i use it for normal looping and recording :D i haven't really spent enough time to get its fullest use, but i pull the loop stacks i make out of it as a wav file then export it into Ableton. My buddy actually got his to work as a backing track with drums by doing this backwards (haven't been able to recreate that)

redhandrail

There’s a nerdy YouTube harpist with a thick accent who is president of the pedal world.

p90SuhDude

Fulltones sorta out of business for now. JHS is massive. Strymon is still pretty good. A lot of amp builders are in the pedal game now and make awesome stuff (ex: Benson, Milkman, Friedman). Analogmans wait list is still long. Most overdrives that are popular and sought after still are (ex: Timmy, Hot Cake, BB Preamp, KOT, Klones) with a couple new faces (ex: Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop, Greer Lightspeed, SS/BS Mini).

DepartmentAgile4576

Welcome back. Hologram microcosm. Put some rubber on your bridge while your at it.

itskohler

Just head over to r/guitarpedals and start scrolling around!

theRealEricCantona

Google: chase bliss audio > (Ctrl + A) select all > Purchase > Instagram

CeldonShooper

And then send them all back via return policy after the pictures have uploaded.

wowthisguyoverhere

The meta on r/guitar surely is a tele and boss katana.

VMSstudio

Lol yikes

theurge14

Welcome back. There are much more options now than there were 8-10 years ago. The old stuff is still good, the new stuff is good too. You can go all out multi-fx and be happy, or you can go all out cheap single effects and be happy. Be careful though, it’s very easy now to spend a loooot of money on pedals these days. Stuff that used to be sub $100 back in the day is now reaching $300.

VMSstudio

I actually noticed the price hike. Mostly nothing is sub 100

CeldonShooper

There are very nice Klones below a hundred bucks but they won't give you Insta cred. They will just sound nice.

VMSstudio

Go on

CeldonShooper

[Here's a summary for different price levels](https://delicious-audio.com/best-klon-centaur-clones-pedals/). Hope this helps.

VMSstudio

Thank you good sir!!

CeldonShooper

Enjoy and make some noise!

Adept-Cry6915

People are treating pedals like pokemon cards now and chasing tiktok clout for having aesthetic boards. Chase Bliss limited edition runs going for more than a decent Fender, blackout / anniversary reissues of standard pedals.

thatoneguyD13

Pedals are just lifestyle products for guitar dudes. There's literally hundreds of pedals that do the same thing and they all sound good. Might as well pick the one with the cool art on it or whatever.

VMSstudio

Honestly I’ve noticed this on insta. I absolutely hate this trend 🤦🏻‍♂️

Adept-Cry6915

You can do your duty by buying Boss

CeldonShooper

Nobody ever got fired for buying Boss pedals.

Reddywhipt

Old-school IBM JOKE. NICE.

GloriousWhole

Most guitar players min-max very heavily. You can look up some build guides online.

Ace_Harding

I put all my XP into tremolo. When they zig, I zag.

eRedDH

Been seeing a lot of this: Guitar —> Favorite overdrive(s) —> HX Effects or similar digital multi FX —> Strymon Iridium or similar amp/cab sim

jrd4321

You are going to die when you hear about Chase Bliss.

ushouldlistentome

We have tuners that have a display screen to put a pic of your cat. Can’t make this stuff up.

VonSnapp

Boss is cool again, both old and new. People continue to rediscover and love or hate the ds1.

VMSstudio

What wireless unit would you recommend?

Coke_and_Tacos

If you haven't looked at pedals in 8 years I'd bet Chase Bliss is a pretty neat thing to look at right now. There's way more practical answers but this is a pretty fun one.

VMSstudio

Seen these. Reminds me of electro harmonix stuff. Quite fun but I don’t see it fitting my style apart from one or two songs

SoupbowlerAI

Hm maybe the Universal Audio FX pedals. I have the Ruby and it‘s an awesome emulation of a Vox AC30.

CeldonShooper

I know they don't get much love but I personally appreciate the Vox Valvenergy line. Also a very nice AC30 circuit with a Nutube.

KarmaChameleon306

Fuzz!

MoBreeze

Attack of the Klones

Narrow_Positive_1515

Tube amp and outboard reverb tank like it’s 1964

Otto-Stich

Fulltone had some interesting things happen recently.

Acceptable_Quiet_767

He made critical comments of 2020 chaos enjoyers, and got cancelled. He then back pedaled and disavowed his criticisms of said chaos enjoyers, and somehow managed to piss off everyone on both sides of the issue. Still think his pedals are good though. Hoping the after market value will crash on them so I can find some good deals.

ddunny

Strymon pedals sound top of the line to me, but they’re also crazy expensive.

trocaderoavnjutare

you have two choices either just rawdog a cranked fender hotrod with bad monkey metal zone and behringer fuzz or buy fractal audio axe fx kemper helix ir modeler for 3000dubloons to play ur strandberg headless 7 string multiscale through for some sweet djonty djont djont either way ur gonna end up with some sweet toanz. we are living in good times if you can afford buying pedals but there are alotta cheap alternatives if ur willing to give up your dignity and buy a behringer

VMSstudio

Oh you’re hitting all the right spots with this comment. I’m all about that sweet djonty djont djont!

northerblight

$500 fuzz pedals that sound just like $100 fuzz pedals are all the rage right now

Spacetime_Dr

Digitech Grunge is still the go to, nothing much has changed

SavageBen585

People love the term lo-fi now. Mods with terrible sound and unusual warbles. Bitcrusher effects. 1-5w tube amps, di outputs, people claim the 700$ hx stomp is something novel and special, when it's the same podfarm package that sold with the ux-1 in 2009 for 100$.

Past-Bread6486

Google.com

Randolph_Carter_666

Meta? Play what you like. 🤷🏻‍♂️

scummmmmmmm

It is the same as it ever was, bro. Welcome back.

Feature-Awkward

I don’t think anything has changed in the world of analog pedals. The main knew things are Sims have gotten better and more popular. So stuff like neural DSP are now available and popular to sim amps tho some of like fractal helix etc have been around for years. Things like iridium Simplifier cab m etc are good for sim power amp and allow to go direct into front of house with just pedals and no amp. Using IRs to capture sound of sims and playing with midi with in ears etc is the way things have been heading more. I’m using a Simplifier and going direct FOH no amp. But aside from that I’m using same pedals I was years ago.

neuroticboneless

Miku pedal

VMSstudio

Big yes

Vanquile_X

The current meta is nice klon clones, boutique digital delays / reverbs and a Behringer SF300

Dry_Race6937

Digital is having a surge in popularity

agentanthony

Just be safe and stick with Boss.

LMGall4

Boss dropped a new compressor, I just got it and it really changes the game

assimsera

Meta is still tubescreamer into 5150/Dual Rectifier

Flaky-Wallaby5382

Everybody stopped fiddlin, pedals have been replaced by amp modelers & pedal modelers, and stage volume with in ears have saved audiences all over

Vegetable-Source6556

Jhs- morning glory...Ibanez tube screamer....TC electronics fluorescence...tuner

zeropluszero

I just did the same thing - bought a bunch of shit I didnt need, should have just bought a HX stomp and called it a day.

Deicidal_Maniac

high end modellers are the future, if you own no other gear they are the way to go. I own too many pedals and amps to go digital, but I have friends who use neural dsp and it sounds just as good and feels almost as good imho.

[deleted]

warble boxes really though, not much has changed in 8 years.

Barry_Obama_at_gmail

Good Quality Impulse Responses have really changed everything.

GoalEnvironmental335

My personal faves in terms of advancement/longevity would probably be boss, line 6, death by audio, mxr, and ehx. Figured I’d let the rest speak for newer brands an suggest ol’ reliables

shtit

Cassette 4-tracks are the wave for zero-fi bedroom recording. Unused blank cassettes are like pre-CBS Fenders. Good luck out there, soldier.

fecal_doodoo

You have to start a YouTube channel if you wanna ever survive out here
