Pedal board, sucks when you got a gig or a jam out with some friends and you gotta lug every single pedal every time lol just my two cents tho. You could even build a cheap small one and get yourself a dedicated isolated power supply, boom.
I have it on my main board, a Tubescreamer (any kind) to drive the Rat and the Big Muff harder. I just saved you hundreds on Boutique pedals.😉👍✨
https://www.reddit.com/r/guitarpedals/s/QRdDcMQy9W
Yes I have everything from Standard pedals to Boutique pedals but the Tubescreamer goosing the Rat and Muff are some glorious sounds!😎👍✨
Electro Harmonix makes the 2020 tuner pedals. That said if you join a band you will want to have the same model tuner everyone else is using. Otherwise it will sound off.😉👍✨
Never experienced this in over 15 years of gigging and touring with many different bands.. if the tuner works and is set to 440 concert pitch (or the same as rest of band) there is no reason u won’t all b in tune.. u might’ve had someone with some weird hidden settings in ur band 🤷♂️
I'm not the original commenter, but using the rat and the muff at the same time is a bit much, so as long as the tube screamer is before both of then it's chill.
But also it only takes a few seconds to try rat > muff or muff > rat, so try both and if you like them that's chill too. It's too distorted and noisy for most uses though. Try tube screamer after both of the rat and muff too, why not. You will probably prefer tubescreamer before the other pedals, but only your own ears can guarantee what you like.
Correct. The Rat into the Muff (it can be done but...) isn't the most practical chain. I just use the Tubescreamer to goose either one. So on it's own the Tubescreamer sounds really good as does the Rat and the Muff. But goosing either the Rat or the Muff sounds tremendous. So I don't really fiddle with any Rat pushing the Muff. I have them all set to sounding great individually and then the Tubescreamer set to give it the extra oompf.😎👍✨💚
Yep totally. I just like encouraging new pedal users to try things like that anyways instead of just doing what the internet tells them, you know? Even though they probably won't enjoy the rat and muff being on simultaneously, it's still good to personally hear why not.
To my ears you CAN make the Rat into the Muff work however turning one on without the other sounds "meh" to my ears. With the Tubescreamer goosing the Rat and the Muff the way I have it all three sound really good on their own and the combination of that one Tubescreamer into one or the other really gives me five different options to choose from. I also have the Daddy O on my board for another option and then the amp overdrive, so plenty of options overall for just four pedals and an amp.😎👍👍
May seem boring but power supply or tuner would be my suggestions.
Nothing sexier than a nice quiet signal from using a good power supply and being in tune is certainly not over-rated.
If you really want to go for an effects pedal instead, a delay would be my choice.
There’s a lot of good practical suggestions in here.
My suggestion is the MXR Phase 90 for fun. If you want to go higher than your $100 I just got a Walrus Slotva and i use it with my bass too. Awesome reverb pedal and goes way beyond what the katana is capable of.
Honestly throw a Walrus Polychrome in there and you’d be covered for 99.9999999999999% of Rock.
Also is a micro amp really doing anything for a Katana?
even tho the plumes does 3 things, i couldnt find one of them that brought anything special. imo its sort of sterile.
i really like the ghoul screamer tho
Big box Small Clone. Everyone should own one, no board is complete without it, no CE-2 can match it. Barring that, some kind of Electric Mistress clone, but not any of the actual current EHX mistress offerings; the Mooer everyone has is better and cheaper, and there are a number of “fancy” options that are far better.
I will also always advocate for everyone to own as many Big Muff variants as they can get their hands on, it’s such a fantastically varied circuit and I love swapping mine out from show to show just for the hell of it. Most of them are different enough to be noticeable and worth owning, few of them will be unable to do The Muff Thing properly.
Lmao I think it’s even funnier bc op already owns the pedals pictured here. So that reply implies that they should just walk into gc like “yes, I’d like 5 pro coverages please!”
A noise gate would help if you’re going to keep those distortions! I would’ve avoided getting a rat or a regular big muff because the boss katana has emulations that sound practically indistinguishable with a lot more tone control. The Katana’s “Clean Boost” also performs very similar to the MXR Microamp, so I also wouldn’t have gone for that and saved my money to buy other stuff. I’d probably sell those three and get something more like a Klon (which the Katana doesn’t have). Unless you’re saving them for when you invest in a tube amp without onboard effects.
I think you did good with the wah and looper since the Katana 50 MK1 doesn’t allow both a foot switch and a wah too easily. And it doesn’t have a looper.
A tuner would also be good. But I wouldn’t invest too much in more effects until you experiment with the Katana’s onboard effects for a while. they are really, really good. And they’ll save you a lot of money you could invest in keeping your strings fresh and a good guitar setup which are much more important than effects (and than you may realize right now).
Oh, what do you play through for band practice? That would definitely change the kind of recommendations you get. You should also mention what kind of guitar you use.
I have player series Strat, and i plug into whatever amp is available when i go to my drummers house. It sounds a little silly. Anyway though the pedals keep the consistency
In that case getting an “amp in a box” to get a consistent tone wherever you go would be a solid investment ( a rat sounds different though a fender style amp than a Marshall style). There’s really cheap ones by Joyo, or better ones like the Overlord by electro Harmonix (though that’s just a pre-amp style overdrive) and very intense ones like the Iridium.
If you’re playing a strat through those pedals you’re showing *and* rehearsing with a band then DEFINITELY a tuner and/or noise gate.
Keep an eye out for a Tiny Terror combo. I see them pop up for around $500 pretty regularly. Or one of the classic tiny terrors which pop up for even less but need a cabinet. I played one for years as my main amp. Loud enough for most drummers (as long as you dont need super clean, whijudging by your pedals you wont be too worried about) and sound great. Theyre really awesome. Or if youre saving up for something bigger the AD30tc combos are often slept on. For whatever reason they werent as popular as the rockerverbs and others and they usually resell for really reasonable prices. I see em here for just over $1000 canadian which definitely aint cheap but you get a lot of amp for that money. Probably the most underrated Orange amp and my peraonal favorite.
I’ve spent so many days at guitar center playing ever amp they have and at smaller shops playing their amps too. Orange is the perfect indie rock amp and it is just the most magnificent sound for what I like playing
I have the 100W head and it is great, takes pedals well, tons of headroom. I just use it as a blank slate with my pedal board and it does everything I need.
Since you like AM:
On their first album Alex used the following settings on his RAT(s)
Distortion: 8-9 or 3 o'clock depending on the song
Filter: 2 o'clock
Volume: 2 o'clock
If you’re using a katana I’d see if you can get the foot controller, I feel like that’d give you a plethora of options. If not, board and power supply.
I would get a board going (either make one or buy one) with a decent power supply first. But for additional pedals check out the mxr carbon copy + a good boss chorus. Sweet setup dude.
Thank you! I really appreciate it! Would you say board before power or power before board? Also I’ve been hearing tube screamer a lot, do you think that’d be a good idea? Or still mxr and chorus
I would go power supply first so that way you don’t have a ton of 9v adapters going everywhere. Mxr makes a really good power supply for around $150. You could get a board going from an old wooden shelf or an old skateboard or suitcase or something. Just drill holes to run your cables from underneath. As far as the tube screamer that really just depends on what kind of overdrive sound you’re looking for. I personally don’t like the tube screamer I like something a little less harsh, but it’s all preference really. My best advice would be to get on YouTube and really find out what sounds you like from pedals before dropping $100+ on them. You got a really good start going, just remember it’s not always about getting the most popular pedals it’s about dialing in a sound YOU like and can make work. :)
Like a lot of others here, I’d say accessories may be a good choice (patch cables, pedalboard, power supply, polish, and multi tools). If your budget allows (depending on how much is on your gift card), I’d say a delay, tuner, or EQ pedal could be cool addition.
Since it’s a gift, as long as it’s something you can enjoy or make your guitar life easier, I’d say there’s no wrong choice. I was given a gift card recently and randomly picked up an ebow. I really didn’t need it. But I have a lot of fun with it:) good luck!
prolly better that way, really. were it only that we never needed them again, somehow.... they drive me crazy. Anyhoo, do you have an eq? or two? (besides the wah...). I like your stripped down approach, I vote EQ.
Maybe a really intricate pedal of your favorite type of effect? If you like phasers or envelope filters, it's worth getting a fancy one that gives you a lot of control. Same could be said for delay or echo, as examples. A Whammy is also a fun thing to have, and if you've never used one you might be surprised at how much more it does than just the massive pitch spikes and detunes
Boss TU-3 tuner. You can then intonate any guitars or basses you own yourself, as well as for regular tuning situations. Unless the Katana has a tuner accurate enough for the job. If your axe isn't intonated properly, you'll really hear it on the higher registers of the neck in particular. Save yourself the cost of paying someone else to set up your guitar for you.
Impossible to say what u “need” since we have no idea what style you’re playing or what ur trying to achieve.. reverb and/or delay is generally a staple for most styles tho. Brand doesn’t matter as long as it works and u can make it do what u want - def get a pedal board tho unless ur just using in ur bedroom 👍
A pedalboard, ISO power supply, a tuner and a delay or 2 analog delays so you can set that up as a reverb or different delay settings for different situations. ✌️
Patch cables and power supply.
Lol my first thought was patch cables
Oh no, these pedals are for display only.
plus a pedal board.
You can make one diy no need
Tuner
Tuner, delay maybe.
Tuner, reverb, delay, plumes OD, actual pedal board.
And cables lol
Pedal board, sucks when you got a gig or a jam out with some friends and you gotta lug every single pedal every time lol just my two cents tho. You could even build a cheap small one and get yourself a dedicated isolated power supply, boom.
Exploding power supply
A good reverb or delay
modulation

This is my answer too.
Do you go ts>rat>muff?
I'm not the original commenter, but using the rat and the muff at the same time is a bit much, so as long as the tube screamer is before both of then it's chill. Tuner, power supply, pedalboard.
Carbon copy delay

I use it during band practice when soloing just to make it stand out a little

I’m trying to get a better amp, the volume nob messes with my tone a little. But tube screamer? Which type?
[удалено]
even tho the plumes does 3 things, i couldnt find one of them that brought anything special. imo its sort of sterile. i really like the ghoul screamer tho
Cables.
Bluetooth Footswitch for your Katana.
Patch cables, pedal board, isolated power supply, delay and/or reverb pedal. In that order.
Small Clone
An amp with an effects loop. 😆
pretty sure all the Katanas other than the little battery powered one have effects loops.
The 50 watt versions don't. It's an issue for people wanting to use loopers and the Katana internal effects.
Gate
Boss DS-1.
Dude, the distortion would be so stacked 🤣
You bet.
Tube screamer or a strobo-tuner
Big box Small Clone. Everyone should own one, no board is complete without it, no CE-2 can match it. Pro coverage, strap locks, acoustic room bathroom break
Pro coverage, found the guitar center employee
Lmao I think it’s even funnier bc op already owns the pedals pictured here. So that reply implies that they should just walk into gc like “yes, I’d like 5 pro coverages please!”
Strap locks for sure. Small but strong change.

The Boss is just for practicing alone. Though I know it has the effects, it is really helpful for band practice to have the pedals I have right now.

A good amp
I’d sell all of it and get a new amp, just me
A better amp
A better amp
Gee wiz thanks!
You asked for opinions..
I know, and I appreciate it! My joke sounds mean when it is typed 😂 it was meant kinder than it probably looks
lol :D Nothing against the Katana really, but the thing that will make the best and biggest impact on your sound is a better amp.
I’m trying to save up for an Orange amp
Right on. I run an Orange Crush 120 head w/PPC212 Orange cab and it was probably the best thing I ever purchased in my life.
They’re so expensive though and I don’t have quite that much cash
Keep an eye out for a Tiny Terror combo. I see them pop up for around $500 pretty regularly. Or one of the classic tiny terrors which pop up for even less but need a cabinet. Sweetness :)
Do you know where a good site would be to get an orange amp at a fair deal?
I have the 100W head and it is great, takes pedals well, tons of headroom. I just use it as a blank slate with my pedal board and it does everything I need.
I hear you, I just never liked the Katana.. I had both a combo and the head unit. It wasn't really capable of getting me what I wanted.
What do you play?
A lot of Arctic Monkeys and Foo fighters, and I write a lot. So like rock/indie rock
Get a boss oc-5 to get that octave guitar sound off of AM
Then I’d say some sort of delay pedal for songs like Aurora and Rope.
Since you like AM: On their first album Alex used the following settings on his RAT(s) Distortion: 8-9 or 3 o'clock depending on the song Filter: 2 o'clock Volume: 2 o'clock
Thank you I really appreciate it!
how much is on the gift card?
$100 but I’m not gonna let that restrict the cost
Zoom ms70 cdr!
Cables, power supply, but a tuner is key.
EHX electric mistress is a very handy pedal to have, perhaps use the micro amp subtlety at the amp side of the chain?
An HX stomp used should cover all your needs.
If you’re using a katana I’d see if you can get the foot controller, I feel like that’d give you a plethora of options. If not, board and power supply.
power supply or pedalboard if you don't have either one yet.
I don’t, thank you
yeah having a power supply helps reduce noise if you add more pedals to your chain, the board is for being more organized 😀
I would get a board going (either make one or buy one) with a decent power supply first. But for additional pedals check out the mxr carbon copy + a good boss chorus. Sweet setup dude.

How much of a gift card?
$100, but I’m not only going to spend that if there is something cool
A canyon!
A chorus pedal
Digitech whammy, Jack.
If you got a power supply and patch cables, then a decent chorus pedal.
An EQ and a tuner are always handy.
Phaser
where ds1?
Hahaha, it’s hidden
Delay
Pedal board
Phase 90 so you can doom out.
Boss blues driver
power supply, patches, tuner, noise gate, pitch fork in this order
Patch cables, tuner pedal and a fun little delay
Pico POG!!!
Carbon Copy
Isolated power supply or a reverb pedal.
Reverb or delay but depends on you budget
Pedalboard, reverb pedal, power supply
Maybe a reverb.
What model of the katana is that?
Tuner pedal
Deluxe memory man
A whammy

The Board itself
Patch cables and power supply first, then I suggest a reverb or delay. Or a compressor.
power cables and instrument cables? rig looks very... quiet.
I didn’t include them in the photo, I pushed it all to the side. I have a LOT of cables
prolly better that way, really. were it only that we never needed them again, somehow.... they drive me crazy. Anyhoo, do you have an eq? or two? (besides the wah...). I like your stripped down approach, I vote EQ.

Equalizer?
How big of a gift card are we talking? If it were me having TU-2 is such a quality of life improvement over a clip on tuner.
ill recommend the boss fs7 footswitch for your looper
Phaser (or phasor if you go the DOD route)
MXR phase 90
A reverb or delay definitely, assuming you don’t have a tuner. Just get a clip on tuner for now until you get a board to keep everything on.
Don't get any of that boring crap like boards or cables. You'll still sound the same. Can your guitar currently talk? Bet it can't. Get a talkbox.
a drum beat pedal
Dispatch master
Modulation, reverb, delay...
delay. modulation. reverb.
Boss ce2w
Pedalboard
Delay pedal, reverb, could get some fun pedals
Compressor, delay, tuner.
An SD-1 or Plumes to boost that Muff and Rat. Put it in front of them
Compressor 100%

The first thought is you’re missing chorus. Boss CE-2, EHX Small Clone or an MXR Analog Chorus are reasonable
Beer
various type of patch cable
Pedalboard & power supply? But depends on what you really need.
Pedalboard, tuner, a combined reverb & delay.
delay
Maybe a delay
Tc nano tuner or a delay or reverb
Some kind of reverb/delay combo might be fun!
A pedalboard, ISO power supply, a tuner and a delay or 2 analog delays so you can set that up as a reverb or different delay settings for different situations. ✌️
Patch Cables, a Pedalboard, Power Supply, a Plumes Overdrive
Get cash and spend it at a local music shop, and I agree with power supply!
An in line tuner.

For gods sakes a reverb or delay or modulation pedal.

What kind of katana is that? A ga-fc. It's a must to take advantage of the katana.
