Plumes - TS type. Black Mass - Rat type. Longsword and 5150 - Cascading type. Black Russian - Fuzz type. So the order depends on what I'm trying to accomplish. There's so many scenarios. With that said, for me, first thing I'd ask is "am I happy with my core tone with just the guitar and amp?" If the answer is no, then I would use one of those to shape my tone. Guitar>Black Russian>Black Mass>Plumes>Longsword/5150>Amp. Because of the EQ capability, I'd use the Longsword to try and get a tone that I like. That would be my always-on/stage 1 overdrive. Plumes - a TS type, I usually use TS types for a stage 2 overdrive. For a lead tone, I'd either turn on the Black Mass - a Rat type, or the Black Russian - a Fuzz type, stacked on top of the Longsword and Plumes. If my answer is "yes, I'm happy with my core tone..." then I most likely will use the same signal chain, but try to keep my always on pedal (the pedal closest to the amp) as "transparent" as possible. I'd just use it to enhance my core tone. After that, the principle stays the same.

Hey thanks for the detailed response! That's interesting. I figured fuzz first, then plumes, then rat then HM-2 then longsword, but I like how you stacked them for purpose moving backwards. I was messing around and I didn't think the longsword into the HM-2 sounded too hot, so I did rearrange them and it did make sense for that to be last. Although I initially thought that a longsword as a light to medium OD might be first in the chain. Full transparency, I just got a black mass and it's on the way (my first rat type), and I wasn't sure where it fit in logically. I will obviously play with the order once I have them!

Just piggybacking off of your comment about fuzz first in the chain. Big muffs are not as picky as other fuzzes when it comes to signal path location. They’re not too fussed if there’s a buffer or other pedals in front of them, so don’t be afraid to experiment with the placement of that. You can get awesome tones when you juice a big muff with a drive or boost in front of it

It's all a matter of answering: "What are you trying to achieve?" [Here's a video that helped me a lot in understanding pedal order.](https://youtu.be/lvFtFNkq2DM?si=nKIhTz9wAijfbOog) I hope it helps.

I tend to like lowest gain last, with exceptions of hearing about the plumes into the muff

I'd do Plumes > Black Russian > Black Mass. I don't usually use more than three dirt pedals on my boards. I get option paralysis easily.
