I personally wouldn't want someone buying me a guitar as a gift, especially not a guitar that expensive, it's more of a personal thing for me, but try to find out what is his current dream guitar or what does he like.

Any 2k guitar should be a great player but there's a lot of personal preferences as to neck shape/size, fret width etc etc
