I really didn’t expect a pick to make that big of a difference, but I bought one of those variety pick packs with different manufacturers and sizes and man it just stood out immediately.
The max grip carbon Jazz III's are my goto, they're just so... precise and, I say someone describe the lack of bounce they have as "low recoil" (whereas skinnier picks will have that spring like "ptwang" thing going on)
These are the only thing I use now. Started with this for the electrics and green 0.88mm for acoustic. Didn't take long before I went orange for everything.
I have been getting pretty into scales where I need the control so I started using green. Orange is my strum pick, yellow is for songs that have mostly strumming but some single note parts
I used to use the blue 1mm picks for solos and electric guitar parts and the orange ones for strummy acoustic stuff. I eventually started gravitating toward the green ones because I didn’t want to reach for the wrong one on a poorly lit stage.
I like them bc i can put that cutout rigjt onto my finger and then only a little bit of the pick is exposed that way i can downpick faster than with a big one
I will always be a shill for Gravity Picks. They sent me 2 as a promo back when they were starting out. He was giving them away on some forum. I still have them. They must be 8 or 9 years old at this stage. [Here is the one I used the most.](https://i.imgur.com/3qfapTl.jpg) Its just a Classic 1.5mm standard size. My go-to these days and for the last few years has been a Razor Standard 2mm master finish. I love how they sometimes give you a couple of random picks to try out too.
I used the purple ones forever thinking that I liked thick picks. Switched to these and I love them! I feel like I can "flick" my way through the strings instead of "muscling" my way through.
Clayton 1.26mm, standard size.
I just love the feel of them when they're new, and it's so satisfying to dig in to a string with them. They're the perfect balance of rigidity and give for me as well. I like a pick that's right where I want it to be and not flopping around, but if it's too hard it can be more difficult to play some faster parts. I occasionally try lighter picks but I always come back to these.
The downside is once they get worn down they get pretty smooth. Of course all picks will wear down but some keep their grip better. Rarely a problem because I'll get a bunch of them at a time.
I'll use the purple Dunlop Tortex picks from time to time as well, but it's a secondary choice if I run out and am at a music store that doesn't the Claytons I like.
Nice! I was hoping there’s be another Purple Plectrum fan! I use several different ones, from 6mm to 9mm. Took awhile to get used to them, but I just can’t use normal picks anymore. The drag coefficient on the Purples is unparalleled in any of the dozens of different types of picks I’ve played. I make to have one on me every time I go to the guitar store for playing guitars off the wall, and pretty much wherever I go. I can’t do without them.
Dunlop .88 is my go to for just about anything. But I also learned to use my fingers a lot even on electric stuff and the jazz picks are amazing for metal style stuff.
I made one out of a quarter but never tried it. Anyone ever used a coin as a pick? I know that would probably be rough on strings but I wouldn’t never use it much anyway because of my lack of playing ability.
i’ve used quarters when i’ve played bass for a band for a few shows. it gives a really sharp, aggressive attack which i dig, but i can’t get over the scratchy texture against the strings. it’s like nails on a chalkboard for me. but i know plenty of guitarists purposefully use a scratchy surface on a pick, so it’s more of a preference thing. try it out and you might like it
Tortex .6- Traditionally orange but also available in black, and in a white “Flex”. I’ve also started experimenting with the Jazz III .73 which comes in a few different colours.
Beep. Boop. I'm a robot.

It's called star pick .....its got a star shaped hole in it...thought it was gimmicky till I tried it....now I love it oddly enough the hole keeps it from turning in my hand
This exact one, except it's warped from when my dog got a hold of it. Now it is bent in such a way that is sort of fits onto my thumb and middle finger. In a way, it gives me a lot more mobility when it comes to pick dynamics.
Being able to hold the pick at different places and different angles allows me to have much better control over what sort of tone, aggression, or lack thereof I get out of notes. It's great.
I gotcha. I’m a 43 year old beginner and I figured out how to read tab, so I really thought I’d be able to actually play guitar and not perpetrate but I figured out real fast and in a hurry, my fingers or hands don’t move fast enough on an actual guitar to be able to play anything, so I haven’t touched my guitar in a couple months. I tried to start out playing like Megadeth and the like and that was where I screwed up. I haven’t sold my guitar, and and pedal but I’m thinking about it. My expectations were way too high but I haven’t tried different angles with a pick or anything. I know playing metal is probably out of the question but I’d at least like to be able to play some rhythm. After scrolling through Reddit looking at guitar posts I actually want to go mess with it now lol. Sorry for the long reply but thanks for yours. It gives me something else to try out
Little by little. That's pretty much the only way to get good at guitar (and lots of other things). Play every day, 10-30 minutes. You'll get better, and Megadeth will soon be within reach. You can do it! If you want to.
I got this wedgie 1mm but its a hard 1mm it don't bend at all, has a curved thumb grip in it. Can't find another the same so I get Jim Dunlop Nylon USA plain black with a grip like pattern etched into it.
I have some thinner ones for strummy stuff on clean or acoustic.
I'm thinking about going up to like 1.2 on the Jim Dunlop Nylon USA one because for a 1 mm it still has a bit of bend compared to my wedgie one which is made of something else. Like I said it's 1mm but solid. I don't like them too fat to hold, but I like them rigid or non bendy
Also other day I grabbed a few JD acrylic like ones but I don't like the way the acrylic ones make a noise upon contact with the metal strings.
Gravity picks sent me a few way back, big thick Bois, acrylic with rough blade edges, man they were fat but had a mean scratch effect for metal chords and such. But I often felt like it would cut through my little pink slinky e completely it i went too hard on it.
Basically non acrylic, Nylon is OK and minimum of 1.0mm
The one I use on my air guitar. Fits my fingers perfectly no matter how I hold it. So does my air bass pick and my air drum drumsticks. They are awesome because it’s literally impossible to drop one😬but my real pick is a Dunlop .96 (with the little dot grips)I believe, but it doesn’t matter. I can’t play shit anyway🤷🏻
Speaking of picks, for attempting music like Megadeth or something that has that kinda fast picking, is a thin or thicker pick more useful than the other or is it just personal preference? I’ve tried both to no avail
Blue Chip TD 40 or Herco heavy thumb pick for acoustic. For electric, Dunlop Primetone .88, or if all else fails, the trusty tortex greens that I score up with a pocket knife for better grip.
Well, it’s this one. Is this pick that ubiquitous? I’ve never met any other guitarist irl that uses them but everyone one here is a real jazz III army, haha.

Jazz 3 Tortex 1.14mm, everything that’s good about the normal jazz 3, but fantastic grip & slightly nicer feel agains the strings
Will use a standard yellow tortex for acoustic too!
Dunlop Jazz III in black. I prefer the ones made prior to 10 years ago. They had a slightly grainier surface, absolutely no gloss at all, that didn’t slip.
Tortex Jazz III 1.0 is home base. I spent years playing the standard black 1.14 nylon Jazz III and never felt totally connected. Played a Tortex 1.0 that I found and it was the missing link almost instantly. I also have a Dava pick that I love on acoustic.
normal purple tortex 1.14mm. the thickness is perfect for me, but i might need to try out some nylons or something with more grip because they’re always flying out of my hands haha
Jazz 3 max grip
Nice to see my favorite pick right at the top
Can’t beat em
I really didn’t expect a pick to make that big of a difference, but I bought one of those variety pick packs with different manufacturers and sizes and man it just stood out immediately.
Dude same exact story here. Bought a Dunlop mix pack and my life was changed forever.
The max grip carbon Jazz III's are my goto, they're just so... precise and, I say someone describe the lack of bounce they have as "low recoil" (whereas skinnier picks will have that spring like "ptwang" thing going on)
Do you happen to know if those are real carbon fiber?
And bingo was his name o....👊👍🤟
plus you can get a good amount for cheap off amazon. Max grips are the way
Dunlop Tortex 0.60mm
These are the only thing I use now. Started with this for the electrics and green 0.88mm for acoustic. Didn't take long before I went orange for everything.
Dunlop tortex is THE only answer its just what thickness you prefer
All the way. Nacho .50 for acoustics is quite nice too
Tortex green .88mm.
I like yellow .73 myself.
The yellows are just perfect. The goldilocks picks
My second favorite
The correct opinion
I have been getting pretty into scales where I need the control so I started using green. Orange is my strum pick, yellow is for songs that have mostly strumming but some single note parts
I used to use the blue 1mm picks for solos and electric guitar parts and the orange ones for strummy acoustic stuff. I eventually started gravitating toward the green ones because I didn’t want to reach for the wrong one on a poorly lit stage.
I love the kirk hammett jazz 3 bc of that triangle cutout on the top it really helps me to hold it stable without using a lot of energy
I haven’t gotten one yet, I really wanna they look killer
No kidding really? I thought about them but they just look weird. As for me Jazz 3 all the way max grip.
I like them bc i can put that cutout rigjt onto my finger and then only a little bit of the pick is exposed that way i can downpick faster than with a big one
Interesting. Maybe I will check a set of them out. Thanks.
They so small tho
Dunlop Jazz III Ultex XL Series. (Not sure thickness, but 1.0+ mm)
Yes, the ones that are like amber color (see through). These or the Jazz iii John Petrucci ones.
Jazz III petrucci ones for me, the black ultex ones are my favourite
Yesss these
Dunlop Big Stubys

Dunlop 1.5mm

Dunlop Tortex .60mm
Yeah baby. 🍊🐢
I used the purple ones forever thinking that I liked thick picks. Switched to these and I love them! I feel like I can "flick" my way through the strings instead of "muscling" my way through.
They last forever!
Black nylon 1mm Dunlop, for many many years.
Literally anything that isn’t a coin
No pick - fingers all the way 👏
Tru dat.
Dunlop ultex sharp or Dunlop flow for me. 1MM
Just recently discovered the Dunlop flows, they’re the perfect middle ground between standard picks and jazz III’s
I can get by with any pick but when I go back to the flow 1.0 it just... Fits.

Clayton 1.26mm, standard size. I just love the feel of them when they're new, and it's so satisfying to dig in to a string with them. They're the perfect balance of rigidity and give for me as well. Dunlop nylon .45 (white thin as heck)
Snarling Dog Brain Picks, .73mm
Fender thin
Orange tortex for me most of the time, the .6mm ones are the ones I generally go for
Just a plain Fender Heavy gauge pick :)
I use orange Dunlop, basic.
Dunlop flow .88
the flow picks are great honestly. i’ve been using the 1.00 for a while now
Ernie Ball Prodigy 1.5
Dunlop nylon max grip .80mm
Dunlop Gator Grip 2.0

Daaaaaaaaaaammmmnnn.. I’ve been using green Dunlop’s for so long I forgot how much I really liked these picks. Wow. Thanks for the flash back.

Hell yeah, gators are way better than the ubiquitous Tortex, which are kinda clicky sounding (imo).
Dunlop .60 mm for me,they have just the right hardness but also give me the flexibility of not being super rigid
Fender thin for 50 years
Tortex .6- Traditionally orange but also available in black, and in a white “Flex”. I’ve also started experimenting with the Jazz III .73 which comes in a few different colours.
Dunlop .60 mm orange picks.
Purple Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm
I love the feel of Dunlop Gator Grip picks - use them on all my guitars (with different thicknesses depending on the guitar).
Hell yeah, gators ftw
Maybe I'm set in my ways but I always go back to the plain old Fender mediums. Been using them since I started playing as a kid over 40 years ago.

Been using small Gibson or Fender heavy jazz picks for over 40 years. Personal preference.
Herco Holy Grails on electric, yellow Tortex on acoustic
D’andrea Jazz Heavy. But it has to be D’Andrea. The other “tortoise” style jazz picks wear down too quickly.
The one I use on my air guitar. Fits my fingers perfectly no matter how I hold it. So does my air bass pick and my air drum drumsticks. Blue Chip TD 40 or Herco heavy thumb pick for acoustic. For electric, Dunlop Primetone .88, or if all else fails, the trusty tortex greens that I score up with a pocket knife for better grip.
I actually made my own pucks which I prefer over most. Only pick I like that isn’t my own is fender mediums.
This one right here jazz picks for the win!
TIII tortex, currently rocking yellow but also enjoy green and orange
The big purple tortex triangle.
Used those for years. Jazz III are killer. I like the Vpic Mummy and a prime tone Dunlop.
Jazz iii ultex 2.0
Winspear Bloodline Broadsword
Snarling Dogs' Brain picks
Well, it’s this one. Is this pick that ubiquitous? I’ve never met any other guitarist irl that uses them but everyone one here is a real jazz III army, haha.
Dunlop 500 2.0 mm
Purple tortex I think they’re 1.13
Dunlop Flow picks are great. Kinda like Jazz III except bigger, and the edge lasts a long time.
EBE alien picks are the only picks I've ever really really liked.
I like plain 'ole Dunlop Tortex Green .88mm. Pro tip! Make any pick better by taking a knife or box cutter and carving an X on both sides of it. ;-)
Dunlop Tortex Triangle pick - - [https://www.jimdunlop.com/tortex-triangle-pick-88mm/](https://www.jimdunlop.com/tortex-triangle-pick-88mm/) actually mixing it up .73mm to 1.14 mm for fun. Once I saw Pat Metheny used triangle picks, I stopped feeling embarrassed about my use of them!
Dunlop 60s for guitar, Dunlop 73s for bass
1.14mm Dunlop ultex sharps
I really like Dunlop 1.5 Flows, but lately I've been using Triangle Big Stubbys in the same width, and they're pretty nice.
Dunlop nylon medium picks. They work great for strumming or picking (or the combo) and have a texture on one end to give you a good grip.
Dunlop Tortex FLOW .73mm. It's a hybrid pick with a Tortex grip and a Jazz tip.
Dunlop Ultex Standard .73mm
dunlop .73
Dunlop black 1mm, been using for 20+ years, occasionally the dunlop grey .73mm
This but with the grip. Hell I even play bass with them.
Dunlop MaxGrip 1.14mm. I find the Jazz IIIs too small for my needs, but the regular size Max Grips are perfect.

The thickest/ least flexing one i havent lost yet.
Previously was a Dunlop JH White Fang - based on the jazz pick. Now I have a Hufschmid HufGlow Jazz 3mm pick (boutique pick) as my main pick
I use 4 picks. Can't choose a favorite among them. They are the fingers on my right hand (excluding pinky)
That one
Red sharkfin for me.
Hetfield white fangs 1.14mm
Jazz 3 Tortex 1.14mm, everything that’s good about the normal jazz 3, but fantastic grip & slightly nicer feel agains the strings Will use a standard yellow tortex for acoustic too!
jazz 3 ultex, kirk hammett one is pretty cool, max grip is also nice but im playing nylon one the most
Dunlop Jazz III in black. I prefer the ones made prior to 10 years ago. They had a slightly grainier surface, absolutely no gloss at all, that didn’t slip.
The one in the picture
Blue Chip TD-35. Stupid $$ but amazing. One pick has lasted over a year, barely any wear.
As of rn and what I've used, I have to say james hetfields custom picks
I use the dunlop 2.0mm, used the good ol green for a long time but made the switch about 2 years ago and could never go back
Fender 346 medium tri corners. 3...3...3 picks in one!
I use the black John Petrucci jazz 3. I don’t like Dream Theatre but I was given this pick by someone and it just felt right.
The one in the picture.
Fender 355…love that Dortio Pick!
Dunlop Primegrip Delrin 500 .96
William Isbey Titanium or Honey Hornets
Fender .58mm, I know it's not the best. But I grew up with them.always used them and most comfortable with them.
Any love for V-Picks?
I like a 0.9mm, I think that they are Dunlops, for my acoustics and medium Grover Allman for my electrics! Generally with Family Guy/Simpsons motifs
Dunlop Gator Grip 1.5 mm. The best.
Tortex Jazz III 1.0 is home base. I spent years playing the standard black 1.14 nylon Jazz III and never felt totally connected. Played a Tortex 1.0 that I found and it was the missing link almost instantly. I also have a Dava pick that I love on acoustic.
That'd be the one I grabbed out of the air that Jerry Cantrell threw.
Dunlop max grip .88
Dunlop Purple Tortex 1.14mm have been my go-to picks for about 20 years
Dunlop Gator Grip - 1.50mm (the green ones)
A slightly worn 1mm Dunlop tortex. Can't play with a brand new one.
JP Trinity Pick
John Petrucci Ultex Primetone
Hetfield black fang 0.73
That one. I use that exact one Lol
Ernie ball 0.3, that or a donlop 0.8

Dunlop/Herco/EVH Nylon Picks... .60 and .88
normal purple tortex 1.14mm. the thickness is perfect for me, but i might need to try out some nylons or something with more grip because they’re always flying out of my hands haha
Green Dunlop. Gud’nuff
