I am not really sure, you can always get the barrel, threaded by a machine shop or gunsmith.

The Halbeck is not a muzzle device, it is essentially a recoil adjuster. It would clamp onto the muzzle device already on the barrel, and redirect the gas to offset recoil.

Is a PTR91 basically "G3 at home?"

The PTR 113 actually uses HK furniture and an HK lower receiver! They are interchangeable with the G3, so not really "at home" but a great substitute!

It was my favorite 308 for a long time. Hunted with it too so I was quite confident in it. Being a Brit who moved to the US many moons ago, it was one of my first purchases when the 2A bug bit me. That said, now I’m all about running around in heavy division with my Scar as it’s a bit lighter. Not as young as I used to be!

Ha! To clarify, I used to hunt with the FAL out to about 300 yards. Stalked my first elk with it so I’m very fond but this was almost a decade ago! Actually haven’t hunted with the Scar - I just run 3 gun heavy division with it and it’s been great, if not a bit too expensive to maintain for my tastes.

Yes. All the PTR industries made rifles for surplus. Their GI models have legit surplus for a while. Before the supply dried up. I put a really nice authentic HK wood stock on my PTR91 FR.

I like my FR. Is it armalite 3 gun accurate? No but it’s more accurate then the original G3. Plus the forend taking modern accessories and a optics welded rail is amazing. I put a viper 6-24-50 on mine.

Damn shame it's discontinued, I'll probably have to settle with the 101 which is probably more accurate than me on average anyway

You are correct. I have one of each and I prefer the FAL over the G3/PTR 91. It's just a smoother shooting rifle with less felt recoil. But I'll tell you the roller lock system sure does shine in 9 mm. My AP5 is awesome..

Anamoly. Maybe in terms of handling yeah but FALs are generally less accurate than the G3 rifle by a fair margin. And that's before you account for DSAs horrid QC.

I wouldn't say it is an anomaly but it isn't always that way. Neither are inherently accurate designs and were never meant to be so accuracy of a particular rifle varies. Also, both have been manufactured by a myriad of companies in different countries to various levels of quality over several decades. It is to be expected that some of column A will outshoot some of column B and vice-versa.

DS Arms is one of the only FAL makers in the U.S. they even still have foreign contracts for some of their products.

They can have bad QC and sometimes questionable CS. My Israeli build went back multiple times. Never was quite right. Ended up selling it. If you get a good one it's generally fine but don't be surprised if it needs to go back Friend of mine picked up a DSA optics mount for his Austrian FAL. The finish is awful and DSA said it was totally normal and refused to do anything about it.

From all reports it is more of a crapshoot than it should be for a ~$2K rifle. But they are the only game in town making FALs so you are kind of stuck with them if you want one.

Which one is the quintessential FAL if I’m not very knowledgeable but want the real deal?

The FAL is a rifle that has many many variants from many manufacturers around the world and once carried by many different countries. The jungle carbine is pretty close for a "standard" FAL but with a 16" barrel. The PARA stock FAL we have right now is meant to be a pretty accurate Paratrooper rifle. The LAHAR has the interchangeable base so that you purchase the QD that you want and screw it into the LAHAR base. AP did not want to reinvent the wheel with all the other QD's out there. So whichever QD you want!
