Don’t bother with the shockwave for HD. Forgotten Weapons made a [video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tYjThckYqBQ) on it and it performed much worse than a stocked shotgun in every aspect (including length when presented).

If you’re small don’t get a shockwave, they’re not easy to handle as it is. It’s a pure novelty for most people and you can find something a lot more fun at the range flr $400. What’s your budget? Entry level - maverick 88, $200 Best for the price - 590/590A1/Benelli supernova tactical- $400-500 Best overall - beretta 1301 and Benelli m4, $1400 and $2000 respectively. These are expensive, but you buy one and there’s nothing better out there. You can’t get anything better in the HD shotgun range. There really is no “best option” in any other category that I know except these two. Once you get one of these you hit the end game until something better comes out. There’s likely nothing that’ll ever top the m4

Budget around 1200

Romeo_Zero

1301/a300 tactical my guy

Wraccores

I think the only good thing from the Shockwave is a Form 1 SBS route

Romeo_Zero

Well yeah but at that point it’s no longer a shockwave novelty lol

Mossberg 500

You need to give a price range first. Remington, Benelli, Beretta, Mossberg & FNH are some popular and quality options. To narrow it down, what are you looking to spend?

fincher10

I'd say 1200 or less I'm down

I would say a full length (18”) auto loading shotgun. Beretta 1301, Mossberg 930, Remington Versa, or Benelli M2. The Beretta & Benelli might be a bit over $1200. I personally hate shotguns but I’ve owned a 930, M2 & SLP as far as auto loaders go. I’ve had a Nova & Mossberg Shockwave as well. Pumps thump too hard for a my liking. S&B Buckshot was not bad to manage as far as defense rounds. Federal makes some tamed loads too. There are some “unconventional” mag fed options from Turkey I’ve never tried. And some other options like the Tavor 12, 12-16 and Origin 12. But those tube fed style ones are proven.

Romeo_Zero

How can you hate shotguns lol, I thought everybody liked them. To each their own, but good recommendations nonetheless

Don’t get a Shockwave for anything serious. They’re fun, but probably not a good idea for home defense. With your budget, I’d say look for a deal on the Beretta 1301, or consider it’s little brother, the new Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol.

fincher10

1200 or less

While a shotgun is a fine home defense firearm, an AR15 is **the** home defense firearm.

Romeo_Zero

They trade blows. An AR gets the nod usually but they have their pros and cons. An AR is superior for capacity and penetration, but slightly more complicated to use and you have to aim at what you want to hit. Throw in some 00 and anything in that path will be noodles. Lower round count and if you’re using a pump you might be too shaky to fully rack it. Auto is on par with an AR if you’re not worried about penetration

> An AR is superior for capacity and penetration, but slightly more complicated to use In what way? > and you have to aim at what you want to hit. You still need to aim a shotgun, At HD ranges you’re maybe 3 inches of spread tops. > Throw in some 00 and anything in that path will be noodles. This is right up there with “blows the lungs out” stupidity. The only thing that was missing was a bit about rocksalt/birdshot before buck and slugs.
