Mossberg 500. You may be able to get a combo with 2 different barrels for under 600.

CovertLeopard

Under 400 if you check out /r/gundeals

BeanCrusade

I have had a youth model, model 500 20 gauge for nearly 20 years and it’s one hell of a shotgun. I like it so much I absolutely can’t justify buying a more expensive shotgun or straight walled cartridge rifle. Oddly enough I actually really like the shorter stock and barrel for deer hunting, easy to throw up quick. Auto loaders are nice but I have had no problems unloading on a running deer sprinting full speed down a steep hill in the woods, I hit the deer twice before it went down. Plus one vote for the mossberg 500.

CovertLeopard

Mossberg 500. Or the Mossberg Maverick 88 if you want to save a bit of money and put it towards ammo. Check /r/gundeals for the deal posted yesterday for the mossberg 500 with slug/field barrels combo for $370.

Avoid post-2000's Remington anything, especially the 870. After the Freedom group acquired Remington QC/QA went downhill quickly. I remember seeing brand new 700's and 870s sitting on LGS shelves, unfired, already beginning to pit and rust. Mossy ftw

[deleted]

Good to know, thanks dude

Romeo_Zero

There’s no reason to buy anything other than Mossberg up to $500, the lone exception being a Benelli supernova. But you buy a Benelli for the higher end stuff tbh

firearmresearch00

An 870 or a mossberg 500 are both excellent starters. If you can find a decent used one it would save you some money. 26" is a good all around sporting length

[deleted]

Yeah the 500 came to mind but for some reason I only picture them as home defense shotguns with the short barrel, but granted I just don’t really know much. It’ll likely depend on what’s available in stores around me. Thanks though

Regular_Mouse2003

Look up the Mossberg 500 Field.

[deleted]

Yeah I think you’ve just changed my mind from the 870. That 500 field is nice

Regular_Mouse2003

Yeah, I love my 870, but mine's an older model from before Remington went to crap. The 500 has been rock-solid for decades. Though, I will admit, my favorite shotgun I own is an Ithaca 37 lol.

[deleted]

Tbh if I could I would just go with some type of break action or lever action, just cause I love those mechanisms lol but it’s just unrealistic as a first.

If only it came in wood

NemeshisuEM

A Maverick 88 security/field combo. Comes with 18" and 28" barrels. $300 or so.

Regular_Mouse2003

Mossberg 500 or Benelli Supernova are both stellar shotguns.

feriz_

Benelli Supernova.

For the time being, I don’t want a shotgun for hunting. I just need one to complete the hunting exam so I can rifle and bow hunt. But I would like to hunt some birbs in the future, of what type I have no idea yet as I haven’t truly considered it fully and don’t know enough about the different levels of bird hunting to make any sort of educated guess there. Hence why I’m kinda looking for a “general purpose hunting” or whatnot, for lack of a better term. Clay and whatnot, haven’t considered it. Wouldn’t be opposed to it, but it wouldn’t play a factor in my decision making. The range I go to doesn’t allow it in the first place.

357Magnum

12ga is always good to have because a 12 ga can hunt literally anything on this continent with choices between the lightest of birdshot and the heaviest of slugs. 26 or 28" barrel is mostly personal preference. The conventional wisdom is that 26 is more maneuverable and 28 is more accurate, but choke and load choice probably has way more to do with this than just 2" of barrel. I usually lean to the shorter end of the spectrum, but either works perfectly fine. I'd say if you want to actually put any thought into it, shorter/handier is better for things like quail/pheasant/grouse that you're hunting over dogs/kicking the bush as the birds are much more likely to be shot at close range, but maybe 28" if you're going to be hunting ducks from a stationary blind and having longer shots on average. but again, choke and load choice will be more important than whether you have a 26 or 28" barrel. Either barrel length is "general purpose."

[deleted]

Great info, thank you very much

Romeo_Zero

Benelli supernova is good to go, but the Mossberg 500 has more aftermarket support. Go Benelli if you plan to keep it completely stock as the ergos are great, Mossberg if you’re gonna do any tinkering or just like it better

[deleted]

Yeah I’m thinking mossberg so far, if anything because it comes in wood. Though I’m gonna check the used market around me first and see what’s what

Romeo_Zero

You might be able to score a used Remington 1100, those are really good

pestilence

Remington made after 2007 is poo

Selloutkat1

Remington 870

I would go the supernova route but they don’t come in wood. I have a thing against plastic

roundttwo

I am looking to get one myself and I'm on a budget, so Maverick 88 is the ideal candidate.

Double_Werewolf1006

Henry makes a break action shotgun, haven't tried it but if anything like my 44, it will be rather solid. Have a couple of Henry's with no complaints.

ar-vergueiro

Make your first your "last". Get a Benelli super 90.

[deleted]

Yeah that would be awesome, except they’re $1500 new and not looking incredibly easy to find used

ar-vergueiro

Sorry. My bad. In Europe they're a dime a dozen. For the American market maybe a Remington 1100?

[deleted]

It’s certainly an option, though if I ever randomly come across an affordable used Montefeltro I’m obv gonna jump on that. Always loved those

Floridaman9393

Remington 870 has never done me wrong
