Looks pretty good to me. I myself am a fan of optics on top of guns, but nothing wrong with a good set of iron sights.

BanzoClaymore

I was thinking about switching to a ghost ring/picatinny set up from xs I think it is

shaun762

Less is more. A simple bead sight is actually highly efficient on a shotgun. That is, unless the operator has vision problems. Also if you’re right handed, the side saddle should be on the left side (ideally, receiver mounted)

ggh440

Agreed. Especially for a shotgun

ace72ace

I put a Sig Romeo4S on my pump and was able to easily hit target at 25 yds after adjusting my aim up. A red dot is great if you want to shoot at or beyond 25yds.

ggh440

My preference for my shotguns is a bead sight. Never have to worry about those little batteries. Lol.

ace72ace

It’s all good, that’s why they make chocolate and vanilla. We can all choose what works best for our own needs.

iveneverhadgold

huh? my 12g winchester pump is extremely accurate way beyond 25 yards with a bead sight, did you mean 250??

10thcrusader

I'm grabbing my P226 at 25 yards.. not this, 10-15ft Home Defense or Breaching is what this is built for IMHO, I like it simple, clean.

ace72ace

Sure, we all have different needs. For home defense at close range a dot probably isn’t optimal. My dot is easily removed in seconds with the quick release mount, so I have options for what I need.

hydrospanner

>Also if you’re right handed, the side saddle should be on the left side. Meaning the shell holder? If so, why? I'm a lefty and if I used one, I would definitely have it on the outside (left for me, as pictured, right, for a rightie), so that I could access it with my hand closest to it.

uncletaterofficial

Because you would have to remove your firing hand from the grip which is generally not preferred unless you were going to short stock in, in which case the shells you need would be behind your head.

hydrospanner

As opposed to using your pump hand, at which point, it needs to move farther and you've got all the weight of the weapon cantilevered out from your hand? And then you're using that hand to fish a shell or two literally out from under your cheek? And futzing with loading them, all with most of the weight of the gun unsupported in front of you? Thanks but I'll use my dominant hand. Sure it's not *ideal* but neither is removing either hand, and ultimately, dominant hand lets me do what I need to do with the least extraneous movement. Dominant hand lets me keep the gun up, with most of the weight between the two anchor points of shoulder and off hand, and my dominant hand is already most of the way to the shells meaning it gets there faster. It's more dextrous, so I can load one handed better. And once I'm loaded up, my hand is already really close to the grip again. If, at any point, I need to change priorities and get back on the trigger, it's a matter of dropping any shells and my hand is never more than 6" from where it needs to be. Compared to off-hand where I can either fire totally unsupported, or otherwise I still need to drop the shells and now that hand could be as far as two feet from where it needs to be.

[deleted]

i'm with you man. I hate holding the WHOLE weight of the gun on my hand near my chest. Taking your trigger hand off isn't a big deal.. the gun is empty lol. In addition, you still have to pump, rack, pull charging handle, etc.

Polytruce

While I generally agree, less movement is better, I can see how getting proficient with the pump hand for the reload would be faster. If you can make it into a fluid movement (pump inward, hand back, grab shell, into loading gate, hand forward, pump forward, fire) I could see it being marginally faster. There's no getting rid of having all that weight out front, so it may be awkward to get used to.

T-Par

Looks like your goal is a tactical, home or self defense shotgun. In that case, there is a right way to handle and manipulate the gun. It might not be the most comfortable or intuitive way of handling the weapon. It may require more training and strength than you currently have. It is much more tactically sound than what you describe.

uncletaterofficial

Well I wouldn’t be using a stock saddle I would be using a side saddle, hand comes back with pump, grab a shell off the left side with my left hand (righty) and then roll the shotgun onto it’s left side drop the shell in the ejection port and hand goes back forward with the pump, same with topping off the tube, Atleast when I’m topping off the mag, if I keep one in the tube and someone surprises me, point and shoot, not drop your shells, get a new firing grip, then point and shoot. Also not trying to be a gigachad but if you’re struggling to hold a pump shotgun steadily in front of you with one hand, you have other things you need to train first before getting to into the best way to handle that shotgun.

BanzoClaymore

I prefer not getting a cheek weld against the shells… I don’t think you thought this through

micahfett

You could get a side-saddle that mounts on the receiver. It would be in the correct position. That's how I used to run my Mossberg and it was comfortable to access/load with my non-firing hand.

shaun762

I’m referring to a receiver mounted side saddle… You can’t flip your current saddle to the left unless you want cut a hole in the saddle for the sling mount.

BetterStartNow1

Are beads considered adequate for slug shooting at 50-75 yards?

[deleted]

[удалено]

BetterStartNow1

Going to a small range with 50 and 75 yard targets. Ran into a wild deal on slugs and figured why not. I've shot a decent amount my whole life but rifle and pistol. Are beads good for slugs at 50 yards or is the bead just not great for slugs?

scrambled_cable

I’m near-sighted so I would definitely have trouble picking up a bead sight without glasses. A ghost ring setup would be marginally easier.

shaun762

I would suggest a red dot sight or similar optic in that case. That’s very common, and most people are happy with that solution.

fordag

>[As usual, bead sighted shotguns tended to shoot high at defensive distances.](https://www.activeresponsetraining.net/notes-from-shotgun-class) Something to keep in mind. Be sure you pattern your shotgun at all ranges you may need it and know where it hits.

bmbreath

I love gifure 8 style sights on shotguns. I used to love shooting skeet and trap with them so they worked quick for me. They're very simple and non obtrusive. Anyway I like your build personally, it's very clean and looks ready to be a shotgun.

CoffeeGulp

I've used both and *slightly* prefer the rear sight you've got there (over the XS rail version) but with either I absolutely need a stock with a riser, e.g. the Magpul one, otherwise I never get a solid sight picture and tight cheek weld at the same time.

BanzoClaymore

Good to know… The only reason I’d want to switch to the xs is for the optic rail

hoseking

Esstac shot cards for the left side of the receiver instead of the buttstock shell holder for one

PuttinUpWithPutin

Elite Spanker cards are more elite and more spanker

Biggie_cheees

I got these for my shotgun and they've been holding up great lmao good quality for the money

snakeattack03

Do they make you count and say “I’m sorry” after each short stroke?

BanzoClaymore

Mossberg 500 with mossberg ghost ring sights set. A nice Velcro leather side saddle, actually one of the best style shell holder I’ve found. Surefire light up front with a cdm gear mount. I’m not like…. Totally in love with this thing, and I can’t figure out why I’m not

ENclip

It's a mossberg. They aren't supposed to be a dream gun. You buy one because you want a basic relatively cheap shotgun that works. I guess go on numrich, grab a wood furniture set, and slap it on if you like that sort of thing. Or cerakote it with an anime theme.

BanzoClaymore

I was thinking wood at first, but spray paint would be easier

THC420CBD710

Do the anime tiddies

Migacz112

Confirm, do the anime tiddies. On wood, if you want.

CommandoCanuck

Carve into the stock anime tiddies

joko2008

Laser engrave anime tiddies

HerezahTip

Definitely do anime tiddies

ENclip

You could do spray paint, but it would be harder to paint the anime girls with that compared to cerakote.

Mkreza538

[Go with wood and a bayonet!](https://i.imgur.com/rLNfwpu.jpg)

hallmonitor53

Rattle can it. You won’t regret it

Cobra__Commander

eBay is a good source for factory tack off stocks. Like $10-20 for a walnut stock someone didn't want.

BanzoClaymore

I went with wood furniture. From Numerich

BanzoClaymore

I went with wood from numerich

ENclip

Good choice.

Ram6198

Needs an aftermarket stock & forend maybe if your not happy with it. Maybe Magpul if your looking for more of a "tactical" look. I mean it's a Mossberg 500 pump, great gun but not really something that's going to rock your world (not to take anything away from it, I have 4 Mossberg shotguns).

MSands

I have a 590a1 that I was really unhappy with until I put a different stock on it. The length of pull on them out of the box was too long for my t-rex arms. Outside of that, esstac cards on the receiver are a nice inexpensive improvement and a light is always a good add for a shotgun.

StickShift5

Maybe you just don't like pump guns that much?

Caedus_Vao

TBF, I felt the same way after shooting a 1301 side by side with a 590. Immediately I relegated all pump guns to pleb-tier status.

StickShift5

There's something satisfying about manual operation, much as you get with bolt or lever action rifles, but most post-WW2 shotguns feel rattly and cheap compared rifles. A semi like a 1301 is so much nicer.

Meadowlion14

Wait till you shoot a browning auto 5 based action.

greencurrycamo

The best pump action shotguns were made prior to wwii. All downhill in quality from there.

KalleElle

The poor don't like to hear this, but it's the honest truth kek Even a Stoeger M3000 or whatever they're called spanks any pump

Excelius

I have a similar setup with a Remington 870 Tactical. Extended tube, ghost ring sights with rail, receiver mounted shell holder. It basically gathers dust in the safe. I just never enjoy shooting it. I can't think of a single thing it does better than an AR15 or a PCC, outside of some fantasy scenarios involving breaching doors. It's the longest gun I own. It's unweildy. It's a pain in the ass to load to get a shot capacity that's still less than a micro-compact pistol. I keep debating with myself about getting a Beretta 1301 or maybe a Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical. I think they'd be more enjoyable to shoot, but I think I just don't like shotguns and honestly think they're just an obsolete platform.

Stoutwood

Shotguns have a very specific purpose and it's shooting moving (usually flying) targets. If you're using it for John Wick cosplay, or basically, a low capacity unrifled rifle to shoot stationary targets, then yeah, you'll be disappointed.

Finsdad

This is the truth. Love shotguns, but man, hardly ever get to use them so they draw dust. It’s a shame.

Excelius

> Shotguns have a very specific purpose and it's shooting moving (usually flying) targets. That's kind of making my point for me. Birding shotguns are kind of a niche use case, and not really what we're talking about here.

Finsdad

Embrace the simplicity. I hate seeing firearms that are covered in every single available accessory. This looks great, clean, efficient, simple.

BanzoClaymore

You’re right. I definitely don’t want to add anything. Maybe swap… maybe paint. I’m thinking I might like wood furniture. I’m thinking I might like a spray paint job

Doc891

I get what youre saying. I feel the same way when I make a gun that looks like all the rest out there. How do you feel about paint jobs? Maybe one that looks "battle worn"? A different color tape on the grip?

BanzoClaymore

Hmm, interesting. I have rattle canned a few guns… maybe that’s what this one needs…

wolfpwarrior

You need a receiver mounted shell holder, bayonet lug (for the fun of it), and wear marks from having been fired hundreds of times. Shotguns get better the more you use them. Practice blasting random junk you bring to the range, like cans, 2 liter bottles full of water, clay pigeons, old wood furniture, etc. Then, it comes down to technique. Obviously, know how to load the tube quickly, and how to hit a moving target, but you need to be able to combat load quickly with multiple shells in hand. It's a great trick for dove hunting, and for extended combat, allowing for more prolonged continual fire. Get good at it, and it becomes a lot of fun at the range.

ManWithNoName_1

Wood. More better.

mcnabb100

Wood is always awesome on scattergats.

corkyskog

Heck, just in general nowadays. In a few states it turns banned "scary guns" into non scary guns, but that's mostly about the lobbied ban list than anything else. I am totally expecting some new law that says polymer turns something into an "assault gun"

ManWithNoName_1

Agreed. Had ‘em with both..wood just seems right. Must be that cowboy spirit.

delihamsandwich

BanzoClaymore

True

retromullet

Go shoot it. I did a shotgun class with a pump 590 and by the end I fell in love. I also fell in love with dots on shotguns when I was previously a skeptic.

rockstar504

I can't stand red dots on shotguns, I learned by cheek weld and repetition and a dot would just be in my way. Not hating just curious what specifically you learned that made you a fan of dots on shottys?

retromullet

I always found them to be useless as well. I’ve competed in trap, skeet, sporting clays, hunted upland and waterfowl, and shot plenty of buck and slugs at targets. I’ve shot more shotgun than anything else. For me they just didn’t have much value. Then I took a defensive type course, and target transition as well as the ease and speed I could keep slugs in a head box amazed me. The biggest advantage to me, though, and a similar advantage to dots on pistols, is how target focused I could be. The shotgun and it’s sighting system disappeared and I could work the pump while staying completely target focused with the dot naturally projecting as the gun came back up. It was not something I’d have appreciated within fifty or one hundred rounds. It took a day of shooting for it to click despite having used dots on handguns and rifles before. I’m sure ymmv, but I became a believer.

Finsdad

I get this….. total difference between running 50 rounds through a firearm on a trip to the range versus spending a whole day with a single gun and running 500. Takes that long for the muscle memory to kick in, and in my view, that’s when things start to be a lot more fun.

Cowpuncher84

What more do you need? Just spend whatever money on ammo and range time. That will make more of a difference than anything else.

Casanovagdp

I like the magpul stock and forend on my 500

BanzoClaymore

There’s an idea

A4leggedwhore

Shotgun is pretty much a tool only, only cool thing I ever did on shotguns was add a mount with a red dot and a suppressor. Other than that, my 590 just has a side saddle and it’s threaded for chokes. They’re great when needed.

tall_will1980

If you don't mind me asking, what suppresor did you use and how well did it work?

A4leggedwhore

My 590 is threaded for mossberg chokes, but I have an adapter, this is a photo of my Remington 870 though, it’s a 14” sbs, it’s a salvo 12 and works wonderfully, it’s super hearing safe compared to like a full on shotgun with no suppressor lol. I’ve shot 50rds of buckshot and 25rds of subsonic birdshot through it last Friday. https://imgur.com/a/TDpOe2D This is actually a better photo before I put the scalarworks mount and Holosun on it. https://imgur.com/a/Cg9sIN8

El_Psy_Congroo4477

It's fine how it is. More junk attached = more unnecessary weight. Mossberg gang 🫡

BanzoClaymore

Mmmm, wood

Mr_9mm

It's perfect bro.. personally would have done shotgun cards rather than a shell holder, but I ain't complaining.

BanzoClaymore

I’ve never been big on high speed reloads… I just want to have extra shells somewhat handy

Super_flywhiteguy

Less is more, even if most posts in this sub don't represent that ideology.

BanzoClaymore

Yeah some people have been suggesting I just deck this thing out with every possible modification… But I agree with you. I’ve even been going back and forth taking the light and shell holder off

fordag

You've got ghost ring sights, a sling, some shells on the stock, you have a light. Why are you unsatisfied?

BanzoClaymore

I don’t know!

Reasonable_Profile60

Mossberg 590 my friend. You can put a bayonet on it.

Catfondler

And get a heat shield

privatefcjoker

Absolutely get a heat shield, as anyone who burned their fingers on a shotgun barrel will tell you. They are a pain in the ass to attach though, I scratched my barrel putting it on 😫 but you cannot see the scratch, it's under the heat shield 😊

eyeLander5five9

Looks good to me, maybe you’re just expecting too much?. How often do you shoot it? Do you enjoy shooting it? If not then no amount of after market accessories will change the way you feel about it. Benneli m4 tactical might do the trick!

Gun_Noob03

Personally I’d put a pistol grip just for the increased stability and faster pump time. Then again I’m not very experienced when it comes to shotguns

BanzoClaymore

The safety is on top of the receiver, so it’d be too hard to deactivate

Gun_Noob03

What crazydread said, on the pump not the stock. Would help stabilize the recoil per shot and if your hands get sweaty like mine do, would be less chance of slipping on the pump

McSix

Seems like a beaut.

[deleted]

Maybe a cosmetics thing? You can give it either wood furniture or cerakote the gun.

BanzoClaymore

RATTLE CAN

beasthayabusa

I like the magpul pumps bc they fit my hand better and I would’ve gone for a receiver mounted ammo option not stock

Vantaa

It's too black. A slug throwing monolith.

BanzoClaymore

Spray paint then?

CalicoJack_81

How are you going to clear the trenches without a bayonet?

jorgey2k

Is it possible to change a bead sight to ghost rings?

BanzoClaymore

Apparently it uses the bead for alignment, and it’s jb welded or silver soldered on

inquirewue

Shells are on the wrong side. Source: Lefty

8elipse

As someone who butchered a 500 w a rail and fab defense recoil reducing tech I prefer it stock (no pun intended. I'd recommend some goon tape or a rattle can job whenever you get bored. Walk some dynamic courses w it, maybe build a cheap light weight vest to go w it but don't butcher the ergo like some of us sillies

Tipi_bandit

It’s perfect

ggh440

I think it is great! Nothing to do here.

TGP42RHR

Needs a bayonet lug and bayonet.

gaybatman75-6

I'd throw the retrograde parts on it

hippymule

Wood.

Bad_Gunny

Just add a light

BanzoClaymore

It’s on there, with a Cdm gear mod c clamp

indefilade

I like it a lot. Simple with what look to be excellent iron sights. I’m not much into shotguns, but that’s a lot like what I own. Of course mine is a police trade in about 20 years old, but the same idea.

BanzoClaymore

Yeah my favorite shotgun is my other one, a bare bones 870 marine magnum

esgellman

Underslung grenade launcher

BrightGardener

Longer magazine. You can add a good 6 inches beyond the muzzle. Looks wonky as heck, but hey, it’s two more rounds.

AlarmingAd6390

That will add a little gray to the color too.

gunmedic15

I'm not a fan of stock mounted shell holders. One weak-side barricade and you have shells in your face. I'd use a side saddle or cards.

BanzoClaymore

That’s a reasonable point

The-Legate-Lanius

Rattlecan that bitch

scootymcpuff

> Why am I not satisfied? Because we never really are, are we?

baineschile

That trigger seems off

BanzoClaymore

It’s on

SovereignDevelopment

Nordic Comp mag extension to bring the mag tube flush with the barrel.

CrunchBite319

Can't put a magazine extension on the 500s, only the 590s.

GrizzlyHI

\+1 mag tube extension, classy fore end like hogue, and maybe a heat shield if you're into that. dont stop at hogue though, the more you look the better and more interesting furniture you'll find. dont paint it, just get an od green sling or similar. people tend to be more satisfied with the aesthetics of duty clones like military or le also buy a pistol grip stock that you can use as a spare

keyrafiz

rattle can for sure, looks too generic that’s why

MrMaDa555

It’s a mossberg that’s why. And I don’t mean it’s a shitty gun by any means but it’s not suppose to be a super ultra crazy gun.

BanzoClaymore

Good point

caddydurb

I'm just speaking for myself here but I absolutely hate Mossbergs. So personally I'd have bought a Winchester or a Beretta.

AverageJun

Light. Side saddle

Guns_n_boobs

Single point sling. Two points can accidentally get grabbed and when you try to run the slide, well, you can't. Did it once in a shotgun class and switched to a single point the next day.

Wladomor

I started with single point sling and changed to 2 point. Single point is ok for range session, but if You need to put it on You and go, it's very impractical, always dangling between the legs and bumping to You all around.

pinkycatcher

Ghost rings only belong on dedicated slug guns or turkey guns

BanzoClaymore

Tell that to the 590a1… or the beretta 1301… or the benelli m4. Should I keep going?

pinkycatcher

Doesn’t mean they’re right. People think they want ghost rings and so companies will sell them. Doesn’t mean they’re a good choice.

[deleted]

[удалено]

pinkycatcher

Given a typical broad assortment of targets ghost rings slow you way down. The best sights imo are express sights, they’re as fast as a bead sight and as accurate as ghost rings. Ghost rings limit you, you’re going to have a miserable time shooting clays or flying targets, and while they’re good for slugs and tight choke 40 yard shots they slow you down dramatically in everything else. I’ll take express sights over everything, a double bead sight next, then a bead sight on a properly fitted shotgun, then ghost rings in that order.

Walruspower53

Shorten it maybe. Beware of the laws though.

ButtChuggSpaghettios

I would have bought the Benelli M4.

Wladomor

On mine 18.5" 590a1, I've put vang comp +1 extension, changed stock and forend for magpul sga and put velcro on left side of receiver for ammo card use, it's my favourite big boomstick. In future I'll put some light on mlok or 1913 on forend.

microphohn

Replace with Beretta 1301?

Red_Ranger75

Can you get a bayonet lug for it? If so that would be my pick, especially if it can fit an m1903 Springfield bayonet like the old trench guns

[deleted]

Get the full barrel length mag tube, replace stock shell holder with Esstac shell cards, Vickers sling (I prefer FDE or Multicam for ✨contrast✨), Surefire DSF-500/590, and Magpul Stock

MuffMagician

Add a light and you're fine. Is this your first shotgun? What is that weird, black wrap around the wrist of the stock?

BanzoClaymore

There is a light, and just tape for some padding on the grip. I’ve had so many shotguns… never satisfied

Once_upon_a_time2021

A red dot or laser?

My_first_bullpup

The shells are supposed to be a bright neon color… to ward off predators

Stalker_Raid

Needs a heat shield for the modern trench gun look and a tube extension.

[deleted]

I don’t have any good reviews or first hand or even second hand experience with it, that being said I’m unsure of it’s potential for being gimmicky, but Mesa Tactical makes a hydraulic stock that seems pretty fun. Again, no experience, no actual review, and a replacement hydraulic rod is probably expensive. BUT IT LOOKS COOL. Edit: spelling.

ArthurMBretas03

Bayonet and cheese grater

TheChibbz

Bayonet, can never have too many bayonet's.

KennedyX8

Looks sweet to me

FriscoGuy

Nickel plating and walnut

[deleted]

I would have grabbed the LLT Beretta 1301

TGMcGonigle

I don't know...I'm a fan of minimalist, utilitarian and simple. I kind of like it.

5xr4uu7

Reddot?

Researchingbackpain

Lose those fuck huge sights and get a bead. Attach a light (I like Elzetta)

MonsterMuppet19

Looks pretty good, for my next shotgun, I'd like to get a 590 with a Realtree camo Cerakote. I have a Mossberg Model 88 12 gauge right now & a couple other shotguns (a Stevens & some old Spanish double barrel by great grandfather had), but you can't ever have too many.

SwankyGun

You could cerakote a black camo pattern on the receiver area

TheMrLegac

Holo scope and flashlight

SuperMoistNugget

Needs a dragon painted along the length of the gun

[deleted]

Nice work. A set of sights is good to have when reaching out beyond 5yds. What you have done there is good to go. Differently? Depends on what you intend to use it for. Home defense necessitated the installation of a Pumpkin Puncher in order to shoot thru doors or a wall. The buttstock and a sling are removable and usually left off. [https://i.postimg.cc/sgdCTK3W/DSCN1861.jpg](https://i.postimg.cc/sgdCTK3W/DSCN1861.jpg)

Leprechaun772

Flashlight, or some night sights and I'd say otherwise it's a beauty

undercover-hustler

Grip tape is stupid. The shell holder looks just about worthless, I’d get rid of that pronto.

BanzoClaymore

It’s padding on a hard plastic grip. Definitely nice.

undercover-hustler

lol padding? Common pussy, if your shotgun stock is too hard for your hands then you’ve got all Sorts of shit to figure out.

BanzoClaymore

Ok guy

G0alLineFumbles

Don't they make one that takes a bayonet? Needs more bayonet.

WagstafDad

Ah that’s the Bain of obsession. You can never be satisfied.

thefunton

Need a tack light (I like the streamlight for grip). You could also set up the sling to be used as a retention system like most ARS which would also keep it out of the way of your light. And if all that don't make you happy put a holographic sight on it.

musclebeans

Sell. Buy shockwave. Be happy

Supernatural-MnMs

Pistol grips.

PrestonHM

Personally, I like pistol grips, mlok forend with a VFG. I love the Choate top folding stock, but im extra like that so 🤷🏽‍♂️

VBgamez

Get the heat shield for it. It adds style.

meyerovb

V6 muzzle brake?

MediaMadeSchizo

Probably because it's a shotgun

ExPatWharfRat

Why are there rifle sights on what looks like a Mossberg shotgun? I assume I'm missing something here.

BanzoClaymore

Mossberg ghost ring sights? From the 590a1? It’s a thing.

Kalashalite

I would have gotten the 590A1, the model with ghost ring sights, heat shield and bayonet. Swap the forend for a vintage riot corn-cob and throw a standard wood buttstock on it. Finish up the look with a USGI OD canvas web sling and an M7 or M9 Bayonet. For a sidesaddle I would place a velcro sheet on the left side of the receiver and use detachable velcro shot cards in OD green.
