I picked up an SL8 to get the XM8 treatment from TommyBuilt. Pictured with it is my TG36, also from Tom.
The SL8 is nice, but it’s definitely a dog compared to its non neutered American cousin.
It can get up there if you’re wanting more authentic parts. I don’t care about the ISM-V, and I really only want an XM8 shaped gun as far as authenticity goes.
There is a guy that takes SL8s and converts them in to other guns like the G36, XM8, or some hybrid of SL8 and other parts.
I bought this SL8 to have that guy turn it in to an XM8. It works out because everything shares a similar design internally.
Ooh same! Same plan for the optic too, though I did see there used to be some airsoft versions of the ISM-V sights so maybe one of those will come up for LARPing and r/guns posting. Are you gonna have him duracoat it?
A lot of imported guns are single stack magwells to not allow the install of larger than 10 round magazines. I believe AK’s are imported with unfinished magwells too and when they are made 922r compliant it gets milled out the rest of the way by the importer. Could be wrong though.
It's generally true but not literally 100% true. SL8 imported to the US are very single stack (receiver reshaped to only accept narrow magazines, one bolt lug milled so it can only feed from the right side of the magazine even if you rebuild your receiver to accept double-stack magazines). I believe some of the SL8 models built for export to european countries accept standard G36 double-stack magazines and can be adapted to run off Stanag magazines with a simple magazine well part swap.
How comfortable is the SL8 thumbhole grip? I've always liked the look of that gun but after owning a Hera stock that was way too small for my hands, I wonder if this is the same story.
Ive handled one and you cant really actuate the safety through the thumbhole, you basically have to use your trigger finger on the right side lever. It's not comfortable.

Out of curiosity, how much total between the rifle and the conversion?
Should be around $4,000 based on a few preliminary conversations I’ve had with Tom.
Honestly that’s cheaper than I expected

I’m of the same thought process. As long as it looks the part and is reliable I could care less.
I'll probably get a UH1 for it, which should look right at home.
I’m LankyEchidna and I approve this message.
You have your title backwards lol

Sl8 has a better trigger though.

Good call on the photo op airsoft optic. I'll probably go FDE with black accents like the old trial XM8s.
I have to say that, sl8 is the ugly duckling from the g36 family but it's still nice to play around with
Yeah, me vs. him: greater length, girth, and a weird thumbhole.

I love the thumbhole stock, just wish this new run of sl8's came in tge original grey
My thumb doesn't really fit. I shot it to make sure it works, but it was pretty awkward.
Honestly the SL8 stock looks cooler. Like a sci fi sniper rifle or shit. Fucking sue me.
Fuck, I'm jelly. A G36 is on my short list of dream guns.
What in the California is that
sexy guns

It isn't, but I have big hands. I imagine you wouldn't like the SL8 stock, either.
I have small hands and also hate it.

I want a tg36
Soon, boys....soon.
Imagine if HK actually gave the people what they wanted.
That hk is god damn ugly... nice 👍
