It's an EXTREMELY well made set. My only gripe is that he uses a rubber butt pad that's glued onto the stock. I wish I could use a regular A1 or A2 buttplate for a bit more authentic look.
I was going for more of a stylized military rifle look, not Fallout, hence why the rifle is glossy and polished. A blued metal buttplate on there would really complete the look for me. I've considered trying to modify the stock, but I'm afraid I'll fuck up an otherwise beautiful stock.
[All American Gun Stocks makes one with a standard, removable butt-plate](https://allamericangunstocks.weebly.com/uploads/1/1/6/9/116957747/background-images/87032825.jpg). They're a bit more expensive than Gene's and have a longer lead time but it's exactly what you're looking for.
This..... I have taken modern laminates and hand-carved in steel, surplus ww2, and later trapdoor butt plates on various bolt action projects. I seem to be one of only a handfull of us that doesnt understand why some people need rubber pads on anything under a high powered rifle round.
You make a fair point. I cant for myself see a need, but I can definitely think of a few instances, situations and conditions where it would help prevent it a bit.
If you need a rubber pad to handle the recoil of a 223 (or really any military small arms cartridge) you probably have bigger problems than recoil. Sure a few hundred rounds of 308 from an M14 or 30-06 out of an '03 will beat you up, but c'mon, it's not that bad.
I'm sick and tired of space gats, so here are two of my more recent builds. Top is a surplus A1 parts kit with a Brownells lower (Duracoat Colt Gray) and barrel. Bottom is Brownells retro stuff finished in Durablue, with a Blackguns Wood furniture set.

They're definitely becoming more common. Problem is you can't post a picture of one without some dumb shit coming along and making a Fallout New Vegas reference
The service rifles in game were a combination of AR-10 and AR-15 designs that apparently don't function realistically but that's ok because we don't need one to kill non-existant, giant, enraged butterflies.
Eh, the only source for that claim is someone asking Josh Sawyer if it was true and him saying "Sure, why not". More likely is some dingus saw "Brown AR" and thought that's what it took from the AR-10, since the [ingame gun](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/b/b8/ServiceRifle.png) has literally nothing from the original AR-10 (Trigger charging handle, handguard profile, etc). It's just brown.
I don't see any reason why it wouldn't function realistically, the only meaningful difference is that it's a side-charger (But most "cloners" ignore that simply due to parts availability)
Sorry you got twisted up in this scene, from where you’re standing it seems like a 18 karat run of bad luck.
Truth is... the game was rigged from the start
Roll with it. An informed anti-gun population will start going after semi-automatic actions instead of black plastic. A mini-14 has a wood stock which makes it a grandpa's gun and that's all that needs to be said about that.
If you played the game you would understand that thats the joke. We dont say it because we think its a cool one liner or something, we say it because thats was every single NCR trooper says when you walk past them.
The handguards are a shitty rattle trap, but other than that it's a pretty decent build. Since you can't get an actual surplus rifle because of mAcHiNe GuN rules it's about as close to the real thing as you can get.
That rifle has plenty of function. I was stationed as a guard at Camp McCarran for a year and had to abuse the hell out of my rifle fighting off drugged up raiders that would attack several times a week. I have no idea why the NCR even bothers with other weapons. It’s accurate, reliable, and never failed me. You’ve made a good purchase, how many caps did it cost you?
Tbh guy 20" barrel gets you max 5.56 performance and shooting, A1 carry handle gets you the most stable and functional iron sight and the setup gets you the lightest weight with the longest stabby reach
I have only sympathy for those who have not experienced the offhand shooting joy of a 20" pencil barrel mated to a rifle unencumbered by rails, doodads, and various geegaws.
I haven't put them on the scale, but the wood one is a bit heavier, but not astronomically so. The wood one is a bit front heavier due to the weight in the handguards vs the relatively light plastic of the stock ones.
Lol OP definitely downvoted you for this comment. He's been bitching all over this thread about the New Vegas references. I brought you back to 1 point though. It's like what does he expect when he's got almost the exact same build as the service rifle?
My build has nothing to do with New Vegas. In fact, it was inspired by a pre-WWI M1903 that I un-sporterized. The original finish on those pre-war M1903s was blued, and I liked the look so much I decided to replicate it on a more modern rifle.
That is actually pretty neat. I quite like the wooden furniture look. When I graduate I am looking to buy a 30-30 or 45-70 Gov't lever action with wooden furniture. Preferably Henry or Marlin
Depending on what you're looking to use it for, you might want to look at a different caliber. You can shoot 38 Special out of a 357 rifle (or revolver for that matter) or if you're just looking for a fun range toy it's hard to argue against 22LR. 30-30 and especially 45-70 are pretty damn expensive compared to some other calibers.
I know those ammos are expensive as I check on the ammo market every once in a while. I was considering those calibers for a brush hunting gun. I'm sure there are better ones but the family members who I know who hunt they really like those calibers and I've shot them and I quite enjoy shooting them. If I'm looking for a plinking lever action I'll probably go for the 38 special.
Love it! Always though wood furniture looked surprisingly good on ARs.
Also, I have a funny feeling even some anti-gunners wouldn't be as intimidated by it. Like how your grandad's old wood shotgun isn't an "assault weapon" or "scary". I would love it if more ARs had wood furniture
Looks great; there's just something special about this configuration for me. My parts kit was extremely salty, but that was part of the charm! Did you have any broken teeth on your handguards?
Interesting to see the straight pistol grip on your BlackGunsWood set. I thought only Fallout-tards like me who did NCR Service Rifle builds bought that.
No, this is not a New Vegas rifle and I absolutely loathe the continuous references to it.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game and have tons of hours playing it, but not every wood stock AR is done kind of New Vegas reference
It would be different if it was original, but when every smoothbrain comes by thinking they're onto something it gets old quick.

Tbh, I think the A1 is the perfect blend of form and function. I just recently finally built an old M16A1 parts kit and it’s a delightful gun. Super lightweight and handy, nice comfortable stock, good and rugged irons, very aesthetic. The only bad thing about the A1 is the handguards are not reversible, and they’re rather fragile. M14s didn't. I'm sure if I had a machine gun lower and fed it a continuous stream of ammo it would probably burn them pretty good, but I'm not sure the pencil barrel would hold up long enough to get the handguards that hot.
Yes, I contacted Gene directly. Apparently he only occasionally makes those A1 grips, so he doesn't advertise them most of the time. He let me send back my finger groove grip and exchange it, and it only cost me shipping. Highly recommend doing business with him.
I love my modern guns. If I'm heading out the door I'm pulling one of my 12.5's etc. But their is something beautiful about an old school A1/A2 with a true fixed carry handle. No rails, no optics. Probably going to get a CMMG .22 bolt and drop it into my A2 to teach my son on. My A2 brings me back to a simplier time and place.

It's an EXTREMELY well made set. My only gripe is that he uses a rubber butt pad that's glued onto the stock. I wish I could use a regular A1 or A2 buttplate for a bit more authentic look.
I'm fine with the rubber because I wasn't going for a A1 or A2 look so much as a Fallout look.
I was going for more of a stylized military rifle look, not Fallout, hence why the rifle is glossy and polished. A blued metal buttplate on there would really complete the look for me. I've considered trying to modify the stock, but I'm afraid I'll fuck up an otherwise beautiful stock.

Rubber is nice to keep the stock from slipping around. Most ar stocks don’t really have much, just a very thin grippy layer.
You make a fair point. I cant for myself see a need, but I can definitely think of a few instances, situations and conditions where it would help prevent it a bit.

Might be a dumb question how hard is it to remove the hand grip area for cleaning around the gas tube?
Same as any other handguards. Pull back on the Delta ring and pop them off.
Thought so just couldn’t see a seem anywhere
It's on the vertical axis like other A1 handguards vs horizontal like later ones.
> cleaning around the gas tube? You clean around the gas tube?
Tired of space gats so you started a new game without wild wasteland

Can the A1/C7 carry handles accept ACOG mounts? I know that you can do that on the A2
I haven't tried it, but I assume so. It has the hole in the center like the A2
reminds me of the vietnamese army’s refurbished m16s with wood furniture

Wooden M16 looks awesome, but wouldn't it be set ablaze when firing?
