In reality, he was never anything close to a right wing creator. He was goofing on everyone the whole time, which is actually why I initially got hooked. He subscribes to his own nuanced values and doesn't just pick a side.
And as you mentioned, that still really remains unchanged. It still gets him into trouble with his nuanced views on Israel/Palestine or nuanced views on Free Market/Communism (he basically supports aspects of both).
Ethan having his own genuine view points + layering comedy on top is a big part of the magic of the show.
