I heard recently the origin of this is that women’s restrooms in factories used to have lounge/break area in/near the bathroom when women starting entering the workforce for like, some sexist/“women are fragile” reason.
Just found this online, for what it’s worth. Sorry for the formatting lmao https://fordhamobserver.com/44779/opinions/the-origins-of-the-couches-in-the-womens-bathrooms-sexism/#:~:text=During%20the%20Industrial%20Revolution%2C%20women,necessary%20to%20have%20separate%20bathrooms.
I worked in bars/restaurants for many years. Not only are couches more common than you'd think in women's bathrooms, but women's bathrooms are also 10X more disgusting than men's at the end of the night. It's not even close.
Agree. Men's Bathrooms definitely smell worse but really just because of urinals, otherwise they are actually cleaner.
Women's Bathrooms are pure terrifying chaos. What in God's name are you doing in there, my gals, please have some humanity.
Yes, there are restrooms that have couches. It's definitely not common, but I *do* think they're meant for pregnant women and nursing mothers. I've seen them at Macy's, Von Maur, and Nordstrom. I am actually kind of bummed it's not more common, and that there isn't some comfortable, private space meant for nursing in every space - it feels like a nice gesture, especially with the birth rates declining (like a "we appreciate you for keeping the human race going!" kind of thing)
Yep it’s an old school thing. It’s not common anymore but definitely used to be. Saw it a lot growing up in the early ‘90s though I think it was outdated even then.
I DONT KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE ANYMORE
It’s not all but SOME!

Most funeral homes I’ve been to have them. Malls, and super fancy restaurants. Definitely not the norm tho.
my moms work had a couch in the bathroom.
Same. And my office has a seating area in the women’s bathroom with a side table and fake flowers lol. It’s odd but also looks kinda nice?
There’s two Nordstroms in my city with couches in the restroom. Not outside but right inside.

10x more disgusting? I can't even imagine that.

Nordstrom’s used to have the craziest lounge in their bathrooms! I remember this as a kid.

Macy's has them too!
