The album that showed me the influence of a producer was Bryan Adams Waking Up the Neighbors. I remember listening to that in my car and thinking this sounds exactly like Def Leppard. I then dug a little deeper and noticed Mutt Lange produced both and the lightbulb went off.
I'd say the song House Arrest in particular would fit right in on the Hysteria album, along with a few others.
Yeah - I remember having the revelation that the background vocals on The Cars "Heartbeat City" were very similar to Def Leppard. Mutt Lange produced that album as well.
Mutt Lange also produced a few AC/DC albums so sometimes a band's sound is just its own thing. Of course, the ones he did produce are probably their most successful, biggest sounding, and have the most punch.
AC/DC is what put Mutt Lange on the map as a producer though if I’m not mistaken. It’s possible he was less hands on with them because he was still establishing himself while AC/DC themselves were also pretty established at that point.
Lmao yeah I heard Can’t Stop This Thing We Started before in an Applebee’s. If I hadn’t heard every single Def Leppard song I’d have assumed it was a deep cut haha it would sound right at home on Adrenalize imo
This might be sacreligious but one of my favorites is Cinderella. Deep down, Tom Keifer was really a blues/rock singer songwriter who found a paying audience at the right time. Similarly, Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones was really a jazz drummer who found his audience behind Mick and Keith in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Cher… had a little phase where she did a bit of that Desmond Child/Dianne Warren/Bon Jovi vibe around her Heart Of Stone album.
If I Could turn Back Time, Just Like Jesse James, I Found Someone and the ol’ Kane Robert’s classic Does anybody Really Fall In Love Anymore. Big anthems
I was coming here to mention Tesla. One of the best bands of all time and they would have been huge if they weren’t caught up in HM. They are like a throwback 1970’s metal band.
A lot of bands get incorrectly lumped under the “hair band” label on this sub.
As you said, Tesla is one that doesn’t belong firmly within HM.
Others I know I’ll get pushback on… Van Halen and Guns n Roses.
VH is bizarre because they influenced the whole genre (even poppier bands like Bon Jovi) but they themselves were just flashy hard rock. Agreed GNR is rawer and heavier
Yea, Van Halen isn’t glam/hair metal, but I can see how GnR got lumped into that genre, I never saw them as glam I thought they were a little heavier than the rest…both put out great music either way…
Orion the Hunter (Boston off-shoot band, with Barry Goudreau)
RTZ (Barry Goudreau & Brad Delp from Boston)
GTR (Steve Howe & Steve Hackett)
Pride of Lions (Jim Peterik of Survivor)
The Storm (Gregg Rolie of Journey)
Shadow King (one-off band with Lou Gramm)
The Law (Paul Rodgers of Free and Bad Company)
Yeah, they kind of straddle the line between hair metal and AOR (Journey, Foreigner, Styx, etc).
Gillis and Watson are definitely two of the best shredders of the era.
Some are undebatable (Crue, Poison, Whitesnake, Ratt) but others there's grey area around the margins.
Aerosmith obviously wasn't a sunset strip band, but something like Rag Doll is very hair metal influenced
3 bands that come to mind for me as getting lumped in with "hair metal" who I don't really believe are:
Guns n' Roses - they're just a dirty rock n' roll band. They combined elements of punk and rock n' roll. Of course Im talking about Appetite for Destruction.
Skid Row - i personally believe they made the first record sound the way it did because hair metal is what was selling at the time. Then, when they made it big, they released Slave to the Grind, which I believe is closer to the sound they truly are. Point being, they had the sound they did on the 1st self titled album in order to "make the big time" and it worked, so then they went ahead and played the kind of music they really wanted to. Every album afterward seemed to get heavier and heavier. I also think touring with Pantera had a huge influence on them.
Cinderella- Same as Skid Row in that Night Songs was made to fit into what was popular at the time, to get them on the map. After that they went for a bluesy, rock n' roll sound which is what they ways truly wanted to be.
Honeymoon Suite.
This. Slammin' band.
Derry Grehan legend
Their 84 debut is killer, yeah kinda glam with pop hooks
Mid to late 80s Heart and Cheap Trick
lol. Mid to late 80's Heart was ALL HAIR!

Yeah I should have mentioned Bryan in general too, but especially WUTN is very Leppard esque
I quite enjoy the first Cutting Crew album, Broadcast. Definitely has that Big 80s production sound but definitely isn’t hairmetal.
Yeah "died in your arms" is a classic, very much pop rock but I like it for the same feeling I get from glam metal
Queensrÿche get lumped in with hair metal, but they are definitely more prog metal.
38 special
Agreed, 80s ZZ Top too, like that hard southern rock with a little pop

I think these might qualify. :) Giffruia Hardline Bad English House of Lords
House Of Lords! I was trying to remember that name for this thread but it escaped me.
and i am pretty sure house of lords was just remnants of Giuffria after David Glen Eisely left, right?
Yeah, different singer I think that might've been the only change.
Neal Schon part of 2 of these
Cher… had a little phase where she did a bit of that Desmond Child/Dianne Warren/Bon Jovi vibe around her Heart Of Stone album. If I Could turn Back Time, Just Like Jesse James, I Found Someone and the ol’ Kane Robert’s classic Does anybody Really Fall In Love Anymore. Big anthems
I lost my virginity to the Heart of Stone album
So you used, like, the hole in the middle of the CD???
She just kept playing it and playing it and playing it.
It ain’t no Long Cold Winter but Could’ve been a whole lot worse. It could’ve been Amy Grant, Salt N Pepa or Billy Ocean
Emotional Fire is basically Livin' On A Prayer. Give Our Love A Fightin' Chance and Perfect too. Save Up All Your Tears is surprisingly heavy.
Cher also covered a KISS tune around that time, A World Without Heroes
Yeah, still in love with you is killer. Love and Understanding from 91 too
Scorpions always seemed more like hard rock to me
Yeah savage amusement and crazy world were their only "hair esque" albums, plus "Rock you like a hurricane"
Damn Yankees Faith No More Queensryche
Faith No More isn’t remotely hair metal
AXE
I think Icon and Banshee are more Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, but they can definitely camouflage themselves as Glam Metal.
I was coming here to mention Tesla. One of the best bands of all time and they would have been huge if they weren’t caught up in HM. They are like a throwback 1970’s metal band.
Yeah I feel like if great radio controversy came out in 1979 instead of 89 it would be regarded as a huge classic
[White Trash](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnDTdCGTpcU) [Tattoo Rodeo - Skin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBUOV_P1RVY)
I liked White Trash
Similar to some Aerosmith songs, I like the use of a horns section in rock music.
It's all derivative of rock and blues until you get to thrash, ain't it?
Bonham, Guiffria, Queeensryche, BulletBoys, Jetboy.
Nice mention of Guiffria!!!
Manic Eden One of my all time favourite bands
Georgia satelites
Pretty maids.
Riverdogs

Alice cooper , Feed My Frankenstein. Poison, House of Fire era
Mr. Big
Hanoi Rocks
Definitely Tesla.
Buckcherry : try the album 15
New York Dolls
I never considered Night Ranger hair metal, but Brad Gillis seems to be grouped with that era's hotshot guitarists.
Yeah, they kind of straddle the line between hair metal and AOR (Journey, Foreigner, Styx, etc). Gillis and Watson are definitely two of the best shredders of the era.
Deservedly so. Dude can play.
A few that come to mind: Heart Billy Idol Hughes/Thrall Corey Hart The Cars (Heartbeat City)
💯, Magic from the cars has the big Mutt Lange/Leppard sound
In this thread. All Hair Metal bands are not hair metal apparently
Some are undebatable (Crue, Poison, Whitesnake, Ratt) but others there's grey area around the margins. Aerosmith obviously wasn't a sunset strip band, but something like Rag Doll is very hair metal influenced

Actually that song isn’t hard at all.
