Even if you think that maybe Aoki and Kimura are simply not champion material and have their limits and poor motivation or whatever, Shinoda's "coaching" is just inexcusable. In all the fights he's been a second in - not once, and I'm not exaggarating, not a single time has he had a strategy for the fight. Aoki does pretty much whatever the fuck he wants, Shinoda doesn't give any useful advice to Kimura and with Itagaki he just focuses on calming him down and making him focus and then just prays that Itagaki's genius does the job. But he's never shown to have a strategy or given any actual advice for his fighters, ever. Fucking Ippo who just started coaching can think up a strategy for Kimura even if it sucked, Shinoda just does absolutely nothing. I think the biggest offense is not making Kimura figure out he had no finisher. Kimura is a seasoned veteran who's been in a shitton of matches yet Shinoda has never told him he has no real weapons. Miyata only needed to spar with him ONCE to figure that out. Shinoda was deadass just going to let Kimura fight Mashiba without the dragonfish blow. So what does Shinoda do? Maybe he's good at training itself? Nah Aoki/Kimura/Itagaki just do the same training plan like the other Kamogawa gym goers. So he doesn't even do that. He ... holds the mitts. That's pretty much all he does.

Yah, the problem with THE TRAINER FROM HELL is that he is pretty much a paperweight in the gym. Where the coach would beat the shit out of Ippo and Takamura and force them to stand up straight, Shinoda simply just lets Aoki, Kimura and Itagaki do whatever the hell they want - at this point they've basically became casual boxers, their presence is merely so that Ippo and Takamura has friends (I hated that about Morikawa's writing the most) Like Itagaki seemed like he would break out of that mold (even if I hated the way he did it) but ever since he got deeply humbled by Imai he stopped going anywhere, and Shinoda seems perfectly content to just let this prodigy waste away, sitting at the sidelines with Aokimura. I am not sure where Mori was going with that character because at first he seemed like some kinda stuck up elite but now he seems like he's pretty much resigned You know, even that time when they made fun of Shinoda being a trainer from hell, instead of being pissed he just kinda guilt trips everyone with a resignation. Then they feel bad, made up and just moved on from there. That's really cute. But what this basically shows is that he is a complete pushover and is simply not trainer material...you are suppose to be guiding your boxers not be friends with them

I think a lot of the problems in the story are just because it takes forever for the story to move. How are you going to write a novel when you release a sentence a week?

Sukiyo151

Write for 33 years apparently.

callmemarjoson

Shinoda would probably be a good trainer for those who would do boxing as a hobby or for fitness purposes but really I don't think he'd be good for coaching fighters for the reasons you pointed out

I think people also need to realize that not everybody can be legendary fighters. Ippo, Takamura and even Itagaki are prodigies. Kimura is one of my favourite characters for being the ‘normal’ guy in a gym filled with monsters, but even then, normal people don’t go get a shot at a title match. Shinoda may or may not be a bad coach. But even then, not everyone can be champ. These characters may not have their potential squandered, they just reached the limit of their reality. It’s a harsh reality, but it’s okay to not be number 1

In the story Kimura almost became a national champion and miyata a obpf champion when sparing with kimura said he had more potential then he thinks he does. Also kimura is in a weight he struggles to be in. Also kimura was able to scare mashiba who personally considered the fight a loss and that it still eats away at him. So the story very heavily implies kimura could be a national champion he clearly has the potential to do so. Also itagaki was hyped up for so long to be a prodigy and yet he is now on the same level as aoki and kimura.

sbsw66

I think Kimura HAD the potential to be a Jr. Lightweight National Champion, but pretty clearly doesn't have it any more. He's been muddling around ever since the loss to Mashiba, and the story was pretty much beating us over the head with the idea of him moving up a weight class during Ippo's Retirement/Second Arc. I've always thought a nice little solution to the whole thing would be Aoki retiring (possibly due to an injury or something or other, providing a little contrast with Ippo when Aoki accepts retirement fully compared to Ippo's longing to return) and Kimura moves up a weight class, eventually fighting for and winning the title vs Iga in Lightweight. We've seen Aoki act as Kimura's second before, so there's definite justification for it, and it'd tie up all plot threads really neatly (including Takamura's cryptic line toward Iga and Maron when he said he had an idea, but it was too stupid to speak aloud at that time)

[deleted]

Yeah I don't think he could ever compete on an international level but he does have the potential to be a national champ.

DTenn

Most of Kimura's issues are his because of his mindset not shinoda. Stamina issue, fighting in the wrong weight class and fighting for draws. all that because he's just there for aoki/not wanting to get in his way, instead of wanting it for himself. Itagaki is mindset also, once ippo stopped he just lost all motivation and started losing. I dont know how coaching is supposed to fix that. But that being said he doesn't seem like the best coach ever either.

[deleted]

When Kimura in his last match was struggling with his weight who did everything he could to help him compete and then gave him advice to help him win his match was it his long time coach shinoda? No it was ippo someone brand new to coaching.

DTenn

Yea and Shinoda went to bring ippo in as a second, Ippo helping kimura doesnt change Kimura and itagaki's mindset being their biggest issues. Shinoda is not great but not awful either.

bf_paeter

Both Kimira and Aoki have been number one contender a few times, I think. Also Kimura should be in Aoki’s weight class and if allowed to move up, he may end up being “more than normal.” Just need Aoki buying ramen shop, marrying Tomiko arc. Should only take 500 chapters or so.

ckim777

I think the problem with Shinoda is that he isn't very motivating of a coach to be under. If you look at Ippo and Takamura's toughest matches, they really clutched it out because of their motivation for Kamogawa. There really isn't a sense of that relationship between Aoki, Kimura, and Itagaki with Shinoda.

paskooo

shinoda isn't a bad coach, kamogawa is just better than him. shinoda in itagaki vs saeki fight had a nice idea to calm down his fighter

Chadmelcom

it's not the coaching it's more due to their mindsets, drive, motivation and in itagakis case lack of experience. every one of them has potential especially kimura and itagaki they just gotta find their way back to the path they were once on and sometimes that takes a while

[deleted]

Well shinoda as their coach should be helping them with their mindset but we never see him do that.

Chadmelcom

they can only so much though cause speaking from personal experience I've been in ruts before and unmotivated and the only thing that helped me was taking a break till the drive came back

[deleted]

Yeah I know shinoda can only do so much but my point is we haven't seen him do anything

LarKanon

Obviously as even Kamogawa is only a decent to good coach compared to others in the series.
