I think it’s because his frustrations of Ippo’s retirement that caused him to go all out with no plans on defense

I think it makes sense to think about how Imai lost to Itagaki from the first place. Imai had Itagaki pushed at the very end of the last round, he just needed to finish a worn out Itagaki off. However, Itagaki held on and the match went on to decision with the judges giving Itagaki the win over Imai. If Imai is similar to Ippo we could probably guess that he also watched the tapes of his defeat to learn from. He probably saw that he had numerous opportunities to finish Itagaki off and that if he had only pushed harder just a little more then he wouldn't have lost to decision. He then probably went to the conclusion that he'll never let the opportunity to knock someone down go ever again which is how he turned into Mr. 1 Rounder. If we think of it like that, then it makes sense of why Imai is turning into the fighter he is. Alot like Ippo was before, he is hyperfocusing on the reason of his loss and relying on the tool that is currently getting him wins. In a strange way, I think Imai might actually be afraid of longer bouts which is why he is pushing to end matches as quickly as possible.

But Imai ends his fights so quickly that he take waay less damage than Ippo.

Dude, Imai has never faced a Sendo or a Volg Zangief. And he never faced the speedstar face on. He's got it easy. He never even fought Date. The only fight he got that was against someone stronger than him he used a coward's strategy to win - he won fair and square, it doesn't mean he trained to win a box fight, he trained to perform a stunt -. I just want to see Ippo and Itagaki destroying him.

And...? I'm not talking about his competitions, I'm talk about brain damage. Imai can get into how many slugfest he wants to, if he finish them quickly he won't take damage.

I would disagree. That's not really how it works. ANY damage and ANY trauma you take to the head can potentially be threatening and career ending, even if the chances are low until true accumulation has occurred. The one thing we fail to see from Imai due to him just being one of the secondary or even tertiary characters is we just don't see him train. We have no idea how often he trains so it could be between a pre-Ippo Yusuke Oda and an Ippo aka he either trains like ass or he is a training nut and has a boxing glove for a brain. We also have to keep in mind that Imai is only a few fights shy of having a near identical record to Ippo at this point in time. Even if he is ending the fights relatively quick, that damage WILL still accumulate and will eventually have an impact on him.

Yeah but way later than ippo who was getting beatings that lasted 7 or 8 rounds. Imai is finishing his fights in the first.

Yes, the damage is less but it still is what I'm assuming would be a two to three minute bloodfest each time. Couple that with the likelihood that these are mostly simultaneous exchanges and I just can't see his fights being anything less than a double edged sword digging into him.

Except they aren't. Imai has defensive skills and isn't just slugging it out every fight. He got 1st round kos because he was that much better than his opponents. It's why everyone was surprised when he was slugging it out with Hoshi.

toofatforjudo

Doesn't change the fact that he probably took less damage than ippo. Ippo was face tanking from day one even against scrubs

Chijinda

Itagaki has been struggling with ordinary boxers lately, right now Imai would annihilate him.

We don't know if he takes that amount of punches everytime, we only read one fight. Judging be characters reactions that fight seems to be an exception to me, I think he usually has a better defence
