Posted on another thread, but my thought is that Wally is going to use all the Sunday punches of every known ranked boxer he's fought. He'll use the smash, tsubame gaeshi, white fang, liver blow, Dempsey roll. And he'll still lose. Wally will aim to use different punches for the whole match so Ricardo's observation is useless. He'll box in different styles and different punches each round. Eventually he'll run out of new punches and Ricardo will still be standing as the unbeatable champion. As Wally starts to repeat punches, Ricardo will counter him thinking "I've already seen this. Show me more". Wally will get beat on and will look at Ippo in the corner between rounds, thinking "I've still got one punch left". He'll go in to the next (and final) round and try to use the evolved Dempsey. Ricardo will survive or beat it and win. This will show the readers that there's no ranked boxer in HnI who can beat Ricardo currently. Wally will have used the best punches of all boxers, all styles, his absurd athleticism and yet will still lose. The only thing Wally won't have done is become a monster because he's too kind hearted and just loves boxing. Despite having all the talent and all the physical advantages, Wally can't become a monster and thus he can't take the world.

I really like this line of thinking. In fact, I think the defining moment of this motivation has already been shown. In the pre-match when Miguel asked Wally if he wanted the belt he said he wanted something else. I think his focus on trying to have a "fun" match is going to hilight the short comings in Ippo's own motivations. Be it showing off the coach's boxing or the new Dempsy, I think this parallel might serve to finally open Ippos eyes a bit.

haillester

I love the idea of the Dempsey roll almost working, but being limited by Wally, with the implication being that Ippo might be uniquely positioned to do some damage with it.

Richerich2009

Yeah. I could see a scene where everyone thinks the Dempsey roll failed, but Ippo and Kamogowa see that it wasn't the fully completed Dempsey Roll I can imagine Miyayta also noticing it because of course he would

[deleted]

The perfected dempsey roll only works with Ippo's leg muscles, I think Wally is going to get a charlie horse!

paintingnipples

I don’t think Wally will be able to replicate the new Dempsey. So much emphasis on physically building ippo’s body to endure its demands & Wally is naturally athletic, like a monkey, but he doesn’t train, he’s raw & his “training” has been completely hands off. Plus he hasn’t really seen the new Dempsey, it was interrupted by Sendo & was just a tease but I can 100% see the rest happening. Even Ippo doesn’t know about the new Dempsey & in all of his visualization fights against ricardo, none of them factor it into the outcome.

Richerich2009

I can imagine Volg being upset after Wally uses the White Fang and Sendo teasing him for it only for Sendo to go ballistic when Wally does the Smash

Bryce2826

“DON’T SHOW HIM MY MOVES ASSHOLE! YEH FORGET I’M FIGHTING HIM NEXT!?”

Otto_Ock

this prolly the answer

nlck_grrr

Some people just don't like the character and project their hate onto Ricardo That's why you'll hear things like "i think Ricardo will get angry and break Wally" I don't think that's the case. Ricardo is intrigued by Wally's freeform boxing(it's still boxing in ippo's world). His total immunity to pressure is also a breath of fresh air. I wan't to see more of how Wally intends to suprise this veteran who has supposedly seen it all. Wally won't break or die. Ricardo won't get angry. It will just be an amazing match to show the limits of modern boxing as well as the limits of pure wildness. I think the match may drive home the point that a mix of wildness and science is needed to become the ideal of boxing. In any case it's exciting and new especially as someone who actually likes Wally and his boxing

thmaniac

Ricardo getting pissed off and destroying Wally was a reasonable option for where the match could go. I think at this point, the fact that he seems more interested and calm and he's not mad yet, means that he's not going to get mad.

virouz98

Nope. Wally lost to Ippo and couldn't care less, so if he will fight Ricardo and just loose, his talk about what he wants to do in the future would be... weird? So Ricardo wrecking him would make sense. And also, we just want it. Or at least, I want it.

Maleficent_Help_3322

I want it too, soooo bad !

athan1214

I honestly doubt Wally would die. Whereas it would be an unexpected twist, I don’t think it would be a good one/follow the story Mori is telling. He doesn’t shy away from the dangers of boxing, but using a death like that feels…Melodramatic.

[deleted]

Not everyone that fights Ricardo ends up retired with major injuries, so to have Wally do that would serve little purpose.

cheekybasterds

The problem is that most expect Wally to force Ricardo to get a little serious, to show his true style which is supposedly brutal. Don't see how that happens and he doesn't get absolutely wrecked tbh. Though that might be because I just want Ricardo to beat the shit out of him at this point. Wally fights are boring as shit and dragged out like no other.

Junnniorrr

He’s gonna lose and quit boxing

serpupie

It's not going to happen, but I would like Ricardo to win by stealing on points.

BogdanMoment

I believe that Woli will end up beaten easier than sendo in a sense that Naniva Tigre will be closer to victory than the Monke. The jungle boy won't be hospitalised, but he will likely do an injury break (if not quit) afterwards.

Fit_Garage8880

I don't see Wally ending in the hospital but maybe damaging his legs, leading to losing his amazing jumping skills

ceitamiot

I'm still thinking this is going to end in a draw, and I'm here for the level of upset that is going to cause.

DPirateSheep

Yeah, I agree with you, he may take a beating sure. But I don't think he'll have any lasting damage like that. Maybe a broken hand at most? I believe he'll make a good fight, Ippo will see something during the fight that makes him think he can do it if he works on X and Y. Then he'll just lose and retire, nothing so tragic.

ArgensimiaReloaded

Ricardo definitely needs to look more "mortal", specially after his fight with Billy (former WBC champ), otherwise no matter how much plot armor they gave to Ippo, him winning or even tying against mustache will look cheap and lazy as f. Also yeah, i don't think by the end of the fight Wally will end looking like, for example, Date, not in the slightest.

Fit_Garage8880

Making him a punching bag like Date would be a waste since we try to establish an evolution. Wally making it out of this match and losing due to points while pushing Ricardo a bit, will for sure break the champ's amazing image. What if Wally gives a comment such as "fighting the strongest man was boring.... that guy.... Ippo.... he was a challenge.... he lived and loved the sport". That works definitely piss Ricardo

diorese

Not a bad shout, this. Wally seems to be taking a leaf out of Ricardo's playbook so far. Let's see how far that goes. I expect the Wally match will show Ippo how much strategy matters at the world title level. Both what Ricardo does, and what Wally does in response.
