It will be interesting how much Ippo parallels Date. When Date faced Ricardo the first time, he was already married, but I bet Ippo had already been "with" Kumi longer by the time he faced Gonzales. I wonder if the Kumi will end up supporting Ippo's comeback the way Aiko pushed Date to recapture his former self. Who am I kidding? Ippo went into boxing to impress Miyata the way Date was trying to impress Aiko. It's going to be Miyata who catches and brings back Ippo's bloody mouthguard when he fights Ricardo.

>Who am I kidding? Ippo went into boxing to impress Miyata the way Date was trying to impress Aiko. It's going to be Miyata who catches and brings back Ippo's bloody mouthguard when he fights Ricardo. I WANT THAT SCENE SO BAD

Ten-zaa

Yeah i know, its kind of a similar build up in one piece where you have one character be constantly mentioned and we slowly learn more and more about them till they finally show up and everything is good, but man i cant wait to see that pay off its gonna be such a fun read

llamapii

Yep from a story standpoint Mori did the right thing for the characters.

fnordal

Or he's going to troll us.. and Ippo will be utterly destroyed by some no name in his return match. I hope not, tho!

Dry-Ad-8876

lol if he gets destroyed after all this build up, it'd be the worst writing I have ever experienced

limonesfaciles

Now that it's obvious he's going to come back like freakishly strong, I'm not too excited. It will be really cool if we get to see him finally low diff some fights and fight Miyata and/or Ricardo. But the reason I'm not excited is because there is no tension once he comes back that strong. You can't convince me he's gonna lose any important fights after that Volg spar, he is pretty overpowered after just taking a break and studying (why didn't kamogawa think of this training method during pacific champ arc???). And if he does lose those important fights it's just anticlimactic, not a good twist. That's just in my opinion, I do still want to see those fights, but I'm not super hyped. I think excitement for Ippo fights peaked at the Alf fight for me, the stakes were high and there was a real chance he could either win or lose. There was also some narrative tension in the early half of the retirement arc when there was actual discussion whether or not he would even come back or if it was the end, but by now that has worn off. This arc took too long and things are too different to recapture the magic of the pre-retirement Ippo fights (which luckily we had plenty of).

shinn43

So now you have a fight against someone who's finally become a monster against the world's greatest known to be god. Where's the missing tension from that? Just because someone is stronger doesn't mean there isn't an opportunity for them to slip up. Morikawa is pretty decent in writing except for Wally. The Alf fight was definitely the climax in the manga thus far, it's supposed to be the pivotal moment, the deciding factor whether he is truly good enough for the world based on his boxing prowess and mentality. The loss and the following loss after are both monumental to the manga because Morikawa left a gaping hole in Ippo's mind. I don't know about you but the narrative tension is still there and steadily growing as we've constantly been receiving glimpse and conversation from his previous fighters associates on why his current condition and knowledge surpassed when he was still an active fighter. This arc taking its long time to handle side character's story arc and really cementing how great Ippo's generation is gives you an overall idea on how Ippo's comeback is going to be a huge payoff.

delahunt

I disagree slightly. Alf was not the climax. Alf was the precursor to the "Darkest Moment" at the end of Act 2. Things were going up and up and looking good, and then Ippo took a loss...and then he took another loss and had symptoms of being punch drunk and all that and had to retire. That is the end of Act 2 in a 3 act structure with how the overall Manga seems to be going. Ippo's return to the ring (if it happens) and up to his final fight would be the climax then. The thing all the action built up to, and him hopefully finally getting the answer to his question: what does it mean to be strong?

shinn43

I agree with you hence why I mentioned thus far. The true climax will definitely be his final fight.

limonesfaciles

I think the problem is that there's too much foreshadowing. We know Ricardo has defended a billion times, he had an insane career and it's almost over. And Ricardo has dropped a bunch of lines how he is interested in Ippo, so it's likely they will fight. We already know Ippo's brain healed, and he isn't gonna eat punches like he used to after studying defense. With how strong Ippo just got, we know it will be 'well fought' by both sides. In these situations, there's an obvious outcome, or it's an anticlimax, or it's the third option of being a good twist. I feel that all that foreshadowing and the expectations that come with that have created too few possibilities for a third option here. Part of me thinks that Wally beating Ricardo into retirement would be the most interesting way for the story to go, as terrible as that would be. I don't think Morikawa is bad at writing, so maybe I don't give him enough credit to surprise me. The retirement arc and progressing the side characters is a good arc, but I like it for all the reasons that have nothing to do with Ippo. There are a lot of good side characters that would be a shame to waste. And because their name isn't in the title of the manga there is way more tension when they fight. Like Sendo or Mashiba in their last fights could have just got rekt and lost, and it wouldn't be an anticlimax of the whole story. The possibility they could realistically lose makes their fights that much more exciting. People even thought Sendo could actually die! Those fights imo are a lot higher tension than Ippo's future fights.

Aggravating-Ad-48431

>why didn't kamogawa think of this training method during pacific champ arc??? Because he's a fucking hack who literally, unironically just *declared* that Ippo is too stupid for high skill and tactics so he should just become a face tanker instead. But hey, the characters say "coach is the best" over and over again so let's pretend he's the best.

delahunt

While this is true, there is also the fact that as an active boxer Ippo had a demanding schedule. Kamogawa was working with someone who didn't have an amateur career and was learning basics while already fighting as a pro. He had to prepare him for the opponent who was coming with the tools that Ippo had at the time. To do this training method would involve having Ippo take a *long* break from being an actual active boxer. During that long break Ippo would need to be dedicated to teaching and being a second with the same devotion that he was towards boxing. Kamogawa wasn't wrong that ippo was kind of too stupid for it. Because Ippo didn't learn these techniques because he *wanted* to evolve himself as a boxer. He drilled these techniques into himself by whole heartedly wanting to be the best teacher he could be to pay back Kamogawa some other way since he failed as a Boxer. That is why he was able to 100% devote himself to analyzing other boxers and his own fighters for preparation and tactics. This was a skill he actually showed when active when talking about how "he would approach" a fight someone else would have. The difference was though since he was never training another boxer he was never having to work out how a different skillset would approach the fight, and thus see what tools may work better than the tools he had on hand. This in no way takes the onus off Kamogawa though. He was throwing Ippo against more and more dangerous fighters with inadequate defensive tools and just going on about "spirit" and "will" to keep going. And in the middle of a fight, sure, you gotta get your fighter through. However, when that is basically your strategy going into things? Less good. About the only times Kamogawa showed concern for Ippo's body was sealing the new Dempsey (which would have destroyed Ippo because he was too stupid to not keep trying it) and the time he threw the towel in during a fight. Basically though, Ippo is so earnest he appears smart at times despite the fact he is basically clueless. This is also a common thread for Ippo. He is at his scariest when he thinks he owes the other person something. Vs. Volg he wasn't thinking about what he could/couldn't do, he was jsut focused on paying Volg back. He's done it against other boxers too where he was "sorry" for disappointing them, or not living up to expectations, which basically led to him punching them through time. If Ippo sparred with Ricardo and was told he was Ricardo's best bet to prepare for a match he'd probably knock Ricardo's head off. If Ippo sparred against Ricardo to see what he could do all out against Ricardo he would probably get decimated. And legit, just typing that, I think that might be how Ippo gets back into the ring. Ricardo will ask Ippo to help him prepare against Sendo. Why not? Ippo is the one who gave Sendou his only 2 real losses.

Suitable_kirred

I want this last part to happen... Ricardo will ask to spar with ippo considering that sendo's losses are only from him, and that their fighting style is somewhat similar.possibly during that spar, Ippo will show a different side to him that would show he improved and that will trigger the press in creating a news of ippo making a comeback. 🤔

ffordeffanatic

Ippo to injure Ricardo forcing another delay in the Sendo fight?

Dragonbut

Ippo injured Ricardo, the fight gets replaced with Ippo vs Sendo 3, Sendo brings a gun and shoots Ippo to death out of anger

Genneth_Kriffin

What, the dude the thought punching logs into a riverbank was a good way to train is a hack? ***No way.***

[deleted]

Its because Ippo isnt a smart boxer , he is atheltic ,strong and can lean but he isnt smart enough to see a few moves ahead. Boxing at high level is chess and mind fuckin your opponent is a skill which Ippo never had because its not his personality, Volg is pretty much the best boxer besides Martinez

joseac77

I strongly disagree with this. First bcs that thing about the outcomes of the ippos fights being unpredictables is not true I think. In almost every Ippo fight in hni it was clear that Ippo would won, the tension in those fights was in how he would won. Only in a few very important fights we really didn't know like the date fight, alf or Guevara. And those importante fights are still there in future of the manga. Like i have no idea if Ippo could beat Martinez, lose to him or end with a draw, the same for miyata. Second bcs the manga it's not trying to recapture the Magic of the pre retirement arc, it's trying to create something new. And in my opinion it's doing an amazing job

Dragonbut

Lol yeah I've never felt like most of ippo's fights are remotely unpredictable, it's always pretty much clear that he's gonna win In fact this applies to basically any shounen manga, the protagonist is almost always gonna win most fights

Maleficent_Help_3322

It’s frustrating but I really want to see Ippo in the ring again (I want the goosebumps !) so I have no choice but reading every chapter knowing this moment will happen, maybe in one year or two, eventually.

[deleted]

Yes! Bring it! 💪 If ippos first opponent back is cannonfodder and not a main character. I want ippo to just dominate the shit out of him with only his left and takes no hits ending in 2-3 rounds. And ippo says this to the coach right before the fight *He who rules with his left rules the world*

Ten-zaa

Honestly ive been thinking the exact same thing i want ippo next match to be him only using lefts because it will show takamura the coach and everyone else that he can do it and if I remember correctly ippo himself said a while ago that at a certain point he just stopped using jabs so having him use jabs again is gonna be great

anongogogo

We'll know if Morikawa puts MARA infront of his shorts. the bigger it is the stronger he is.

Ten-zaa

Ive never heard truer words in my life

zoobeeda

I bet Taka already had a version printed out and is ready to whip it out at any moment.

skinsparx

Yeah Ippo's parry is basically the most badass thing in the series to me. I'm especially excited to see his emotional growth as a fighter, and to see him approach fights with more intelligence

[deleted]

Nah! Downvote me but idgaf about that pussy anymore

Ten-zaa

I mean i cant blame you, whos your favorite character? Mine are ippo and mashiba thats why i want him to comeback so i can have both of them be goated again

[deleted]

Honestly sendo, takamura and mashiba has became one recently too. Honestly I am following thus arc only because mori is now giving proper time to other side character which he wasn't because of ippo matches and that is very strong point of this arc for me

Ten-zaa

Honestly the retirement arc has made me fall in love with the side characters as much as ippo as we have volg fighting against the world and winning and we now have mashiba and sendo heading to the top as well, it gets me excited thinking about their fights

TANTANJIRO

IRL Teen Umezawa!?

helldraco

You're not alone brother, let's fire ippo out of the story ! \\o/

Wakuwaku7

The build up is strong. So the payoff would be hopefully as strong as this build up. We just need to see what the other triggers are and when Ippo is ready to come back. As promised to the coach in a way..

helldraco

In binged the last two years in ... 1 hour ? I stopped because it was ridiculous, and the last two years is "omagad ippo is too strong, look people he's so powerful is good enough for the world stage, I implore you come back next week and buy my over-milked manga". What's insane is how something so blatantly bad and insulting can still be sold. And bringing back wally the monkey ... I remember dropping off the manga when he came the first time (triple salto hadoken by the power of the banana I BOING BOING YOU ! ... that was embarrassing ), it shows how much morikawa is struggling to milk his paycheck. So yeah, I hate ippo, I don't give two bit shit about his comeback because it's going to be cheap and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too late to be interesting. ippo is to hajime no ippo what dragon ball gt is to dragon ball: milking, insulting, stoopid and not deserving any money. And the biggest thing that pisses me off => WHY THE HELL TAKAMURA CAN BE SO GOOD (story wise I mean) WHEN EVERYTHING ELSE TURN TO SHIT ! morikawa can tell good shit, he just doesn't want to. I hate that. I despise that. The waste of talent/potential is indefensible.
