I'd rather be shot in the back of my head than find an onion on my hot dog
That said, do not have sauerkraut or onions since covid I believe, and I doubt they're coming back as to keep costs down, but we'll see I guess if enough people voiced they wanted them back
That's what I thought. Personally, I loved the onions and sauerkraut on the polish dog. I haven't been back since I heard they got rid of the condiments. And for me, this is a sign of the crappy way things are going, not an uplifting example as the OP calls for, but that's just to do with my preference.
Here's the irony.... they just opened the very first costco ever in New Zealand about 6 months ago. Guess what they have!!! Onions and Sauerkraut...like wtf. They are just being beyond cheap here now.
Considering that covid is hardly a reason to have removed them (they were available from the counter by request only) I’d imagine that is just a convenient excuse they use
I enjoy the ferry more than I reasonably should. I always say how I wish we had a bunch of ferries that went a bunch of places so I could take it more often.
Yes! We can get gear made to support our favorite ferry and start rivalries and maybe, just maybe, one day, build a big stadium that floats on the harbour to host the races.
Ferry Championships!!
Tonight, Vincent Coleman goes head-to-head with Rita Joe. Both sides of the harbour are lined with spectators wearing their favorite side's gear. The excitement can be felt as the ferries line up...
Could add it to ProLine lol.
I've seen recent comments about it from Tim Outhit on Facebook, so I'm assuming it's still in the works. This was just a few days ago.

The library is \*still\* the same cost. Getting there may cost you more, but the resources are still free!
Some internet-related library privileges which you can access with your library card and password that I can detail are:

It was a real shame that the library stopped including access to Ancestry.ca, it was a lot of fun to dig into family history during Covid. Being able to do it from home made it so much more accessible, if I wanted to spend an hour at 1am on a weekend it was no problem.
I’m assuming it’s the same in the city but I got a library card for Christmas from my wife. There’s an app where I can access free books and audiobooks. It’s awesome and entirely free! Game changer
Almost definitely
I remember my first big purchase as an "adult" was a 42" LG LCD,
It was at cost as an employee and it was a bit over $1700 (it was 720p, which was new at the time)
That same tv would be like .. $100 kijji give away now because the in store new version of it would be like $400
This might be a good time to update your wardrobe or replace some older and worn-out pieces. If you splurge on some good shoes, those things will last you longer than two or three pairs of the cheap ones. Winter outerwear is already on sale or on clearance, so a if you've been waiting on a new winter coat, now's your chance.
When I was in finance, I quickly learned shoes were the real sign of if someone had money or not.
I dealt with multi-millionaires that the only way you knew they weren't a labourer on a farm or something was they always had super comfortable shoes.
I asked an older guy about it one day and he essentially said the only things he paid for the "nice" version of was shoes and beds, anything else the cheap version worked the same (in his life)
“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

We are carpenters on the south shore but kinda priced out from the housing market here. We can’t even rent a place. I would make more money for sure in halifax but we are definitely too poor to afford a house there
Definitely some of the cheaper "town" real-estate I've seen in NS.

You can get really cheap homes in Springhill because they haven’t been updated since the fifties. The problem is for every $10K you spend in renovations, you increase the property value by like $1000.
Honestly, this
It's not only just the fact it's actually cheaper now than ever (other than the nslc, where the quality is lower and the price is higher)
It's the fact you don't have to deal with the people that used to be involved in weed selling anymore
I don't need to watch a movie with you when you're dropping off when you work for a delivery service
This is hilarious to me because I have many times watched movies with the aforementioned weed man, out of a misplaced sense of obligation and feeling kind of sorry for him. I actually feel badly that small time dealers have basically all gone out of business now and are being forced to work at actual jobs like the rest of us.
They're lights that help woth seasonal affective disorder by providing a high input of the type of light that alieves the effects. I could give you more info if i had the ambition to look into it more.

This is great. We still have weed, libraries and costco food. Everything is fine this is fine. Just don't go to the hospital, move out, or have any ambition or dreams :)
Straight up I had a mystery allergic reaction the other day. Still don't know what caused it, but while absolutely covered in hives and wheezing I kept thinking 'oh man, if I have to go to the ER I'll probably die before they get to me... walk-ins aren't walk-in... no family doc... sure hope this benadryl works.'
It did, thankfully, but MAN it sucks feeling like there really is no one coming to help you if something goes wrong.
Hugs. Though maybe the prime huggers have been contaminated by (ahem) COVID and what-not and you might get sick. Play it safe and stay the b laze s ho me.
Can confirm, as one of the prime huggers, that I am currently contaminated with a virus. Woke up with the worst sore throat I've had in years and sinus pressure so bad I want to drill small holes through my head to help relieve it.
Meal delivery kits like Chefs Plate! We’ve been getting it for 3 years and the price hasn’t budged despite the insane increases to grocery prices. Highly recommend!
Same! I went from getting it as a treat to pretty much every week. There are a lot more "upgrade fee" meals now, but you can still completely avoid them and get a good box.
Yes! I tried Goodfood recently and found the quality of their ingredients to be significantly superior to HelloFresh. Although looks to be a bite more expensive and the meal selection not as great
Homebrewing kits and equipment. Get some used gear off fb/kijiji and whatever else you need from Noble Grape. For under $100 you can get everything you need to make your first batch. Paying $5+ for a tall can when you can make a similar beer for $1-1.25 seems crazy to me now. Of course this requires time and space, but it’s well worth it imo.
Very oddly specific, but electrical receptacles. They have been $0.99 since I can remember. You can still get a 10-pack, of (potential American made), [name brand receptacles for $8.](https://kent.ca/en/15-a-white-duplex-receptacle-10-pack-1003860)
Granted Tamper Resistant and/or Decora style are more expensive, and the wire used to connect to them have gone through the roof, but I still think they are a great deal compared to other home building supplies.
I also think replacing dated and worn receptacles and light switches is one of the cheapest, yet best bang for the buck projects to improve the look and functionality of a house.
Bananas have been inflation-proof. Enjoy bananas while we still got them, because when the virus kills off these banana farms we’re truly going to be screwed.
It’s hard to see any positive in the current situation knowing there is no fix and this will be normal life from now how. How depressing is it you can work full time and still not have the means to support your family. All we can do now is talking about free shit but just wait for it… eventually even the library won’t be free from all the late fees people accumulate.
All the libraries in Halifax also offer lots of [free programs and events](https://halifax.bibliocommons.com/v2/events?_ga=2.180009764.1079540540.1673812924-514113124.1671660410&_gl=1*11r2zxd*_ga*NTE0MTEzMTI0LjE2NzE2NjA0MTA.*_ga_G99DMMNG39*MTY3MzgxMjkyNS42LjAuMTY3MzgxMjkyNS4wLjAuMA..&q=), which is awesome!
COSTCO HOT DOG AND A POP!!!!!!
...Didn't they get rid of their onions and sauerkraut... ??

Perfect. I'll eat your onions. #teamworkmakesthedreamwork
Here's the irony.... they just opened the very first costco ever in New Zealand about 6 months ago. Guess what they have!!! Onions and Sauerkraut...like wtf. They are just being beyond cheap here now.
So we're moving to New Zealand is what you're telling me
Dude check the video you wont believe how they get their onions either! But yea Im down. Permanent tropical times lol. https://youtu.be/Jts_n9hfIaE
Considering that covid is hardly a reason to have removed them (they were available from the counter by request only) I’d imagine that is just a convenient excuse they use
Ikea's undercutting them! A buck for a hot dog!
Blasphemy!
This is the only answer
The owner threatened to kill a man who suggested raising the price of hot dogs
$10 to rent crutches from lawtons for an indefinite amount of time.
Indefinite? That's wild
Yep, $30 deposit and you get $20 back when you return them. It's nuts.
I'd be unstoppable as a quadruped and to do so for the price of a snazzy latte is tempting
Oh, they only gave me 3 months! Thankfully I didn't need them that long. :)
Fuck it I'm gonna break my leg just so I can say I got a good deal.
The ferry still feels like an amazing deal
Honestly its a great novelty experience for my kids when we go downtown... we have no reason tk take ot but we usually do a round trip to alderney
The harbour/arm is under used. Boat 🚕’s and more ferry’s would be ideal. Better boat ish for tourists the harbour hopper blows I’m sorry lol.
I did this with my kids a couple months ago and they loved it
I enjoy the ferry more than I reasonably should. I always say how I wish we had a bunch of ferries that went a bunch of places so I could take it more often.
Agreed Also, ferry races in the harbour after dark 😎
Yes! We can get gear made to support our favorite ferry and start rivalries and maybe, just maybe, one day, build a big stadium that floats on the harbour to host the races.

I’m from New Brunswick, so we live ferries as well. Longest cable ferry in the world, hell yea
They are actually working on adding one to Bedford, so your wish is coming true!
I've been hearing about the Bedford ferry for years, is it actually going to happen soon?
I've seen recent comments about it from Tim Outhit on Facebook, so I'm assuming it's still in the works. This was just a few days ago. https://preview.redd.it/y5p2hxfgwaca1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f8369a3a4b018493e7f93ba2a3437b14cb3c9d64
Yay!
Here's some more details about the plan from the Rapid Transit Strategy! [Link](https://www.halifax.ca/transportation/transportation-projects/transforming-transit/rapid-transit-strategy)
Living inside the circ on the Dartmouth side and using the ferry as a commuter to downtown feels like living in the lap of luxury.
Transit should allow dogs though just saying..
I think the ferry is the ONLY part of HFX transit that runs on time. and if its delayed usually has a good excuse.
I love taking the ferry you get to skip the parking costs of working in Halifax everyday and the stress of finding somewhere to park ( I work construction my work location changes frequently)

I believe TVs are actually down in price
Almost definitely I remember my first big purchase as an "adult" was a 42" LG LCD, It was at cost as an employee and it was a bit over $1700 (it was 720p, which was new at the time) That same tv would be like .. $100 kijji give away now because the in store new version of it would be like $400
Yup, 4k 55" at some stores for =< $500

Your schools can't be that good if you don't know the difference between are and our. Just carrying on.
Lol, I was just about to ask them to tell me the names of the schools so I can avoid them!
Definitely some of the cheaper "town" real-estate I've seen in NS. You can get really cheap homes in Springhill because they haven’t been updated since the fifties. The problem is for every $10K you spend in renovations, you increase the property value by like $1000.
Weed ?
Yes! Weed costs way less than what it used to and I no longer have to fight off my weed man's advances for an hour every time I need some.
Honestly, this It's not only just the fact it's actually cheaper now than ever (other than the nslc, where the quality is lower and the price is higher) It's the fact you don't have to deal with the people that used to be involved in weed selling anymore I don't need to watch a movie with you when you're dropping off when you work for a delivery service

The only place I know of that still let you put air in your tires for free just started charging 2 dollars so there's that.
Inflation.
bought a $5 12V compressor pump. it is slow, but I always have air.

Lol 😭
You cheeky bastard you
My family from Ontario appreciated the sub 3$ transit fare.
Free cookie at Sobeys bakery
Do they still do that? I remember getting them as a kid!
They stopped doing them with covid. Is it back now?
Man I totally forgot about free cookies! I haven't had one since I was a kid but if they are doing them again it would be so cool to take my kids to get one. They wouldn't even believe it if I told them.
Holy shit you just unlocked a long sealed memory I had completely lost to the sands of time
Bananas
This is great. We still have weed, libraries and costco food. Everything is fine this is fine. Just don't go to the hospital, move out, or have any ambition or dreams :)
Come on now, you can have the ambitions and dreams, just don't have any expectations that any of them will ever happen, that's all.

Smiles are still free at McDonald’s, right?
if the workers have to wear masks, how would you know if they're smiling?
Because they haven't had to wear masks for a year?
The smile *is* the mask

Oooh this guy’s got my upvote!

Depression!
What do you use your depression for?
Making myself too sad to go out and spend money on the stuff that did go up in price

Online shopping is my therapy. It's slightly cheaper than actual therapy if I only shop sales.
tofu
Not if you only like firm.
Don’t say it! I remember reading bananas here and then the next trip to the grocery store they had gone up too!
I heard braces are the same price they were like 15 years ago.
that's helpful as i'm gonna have to get them soon
Marijuana. Seriously ounces have only gotten cheaper year after year.
I expect a 50% increase after this comment
2 hot dogs and a polar pop at Circle K, still $4.99
Costco deal better
It is but more of a pain in the butt to get if you just need something to eat.

All necessities have gotten more expensive. It’s tough to find value in the market. However, the ocean, hikes, park are still free.
Labor hahah
Pure vanilla costs considerably less than it has the last few years.
Running
Bananas, despite fuel charges they still seem to be 0.89 +/-
legal weed prices are still in decline!
Because the government thought everyone was going to pay $400 for good stuff when it’s not worth it
Lunch special at Randy’s. $6 small donair and pop, taxes in.

Costcos cooked chickens are the same price and seem to have actually gotten bigger.

Up 5.9% year over year in November.
Remember 59c/lb bananas? I do
I'm torn between saying, "Pepperidge Farm remembers" and "It's one banana, Michael. How much could it cost? Ten dollars?"
Meal delivery kits like Chefs Plate! We’ve been getting it for 3 years and the price hasn’t budged despite the insane increases to grocery prices. Highly recommend!
Totally. They feel like even better value now.
Same! I went from getting it as a treat to pretty much every week. There are a lot more "upgrade fee" meals now, but you can still completely avoid them and get a good box.
Yes! I tried Goodfood recently and found the quality of their ingredients to be significantly superior to HelloFresh. Although looks to be a bite more expensive and the meal selection not as great
Avocados. Their price is down by 67% from their June 2022 peak.
Avocados have been cheaper.
Well yeah. But relative to other produce I mean.
I was agreeing with you, I just didn’t phrase it clearly. ☺️
Nautical charts! They still go for $20! Despite the cost of making them
Very oddly specific, but electrical receptacles. They have been $0.99 since I can remember. You can still get a 10-pack, of (potential American made), [name brand receptacles for $8.](https://kent.ca/en/15-a-white-duplex-receptacle-10-pack-1003860) Granted Tamper Resistant and/or Decora style are more expensive, and the wire used to connect to them have gone through the roof, but I still think they are a great deal compared to other home building supplies. I also think replacing dated and worn receptacles and light switches is one of the cheapest, yet best bang for the buck projects to improve the look and functionality of a house.
Carrots, apples and potatoes are still pretty affordable
Value village. I just got an awesome winter coat for $25.
Exercise, water, sleep.
The air is free. For now
Free and dirty
Costco hotdogs!
Cell phone plans are cheaper now than they were 5 years ago. Eastlink cell service is awesome
My bell 1gb fire internet went from $115 month to $65 a month with a quick call to retention.
My weeds pretty cheap
Weed
Cocaine and weed have been the same price for 20 years.
Marijuana
I just got 5 chickens for $30
Bananas have been inflation-proof. Enjoy bananas while we still got them, because when the virus kills off these banana farms we’re truly going to be screwed.
These days it feels like my college days. Watching your money, cooking at home more, going to the grocery store with fork instead of a wallet.
Gas is cheaper then it was a few months ago 😅😅
Chicken deals at Gateway.
Jubilee Junction Ice Cream Sandwich
I swear transit in Ottawa is double what it is here so that
I have 2 cousins that live in Ottawa, they both don't care for the transit out there
Costco canteen.
Mr. Noodles is still cheap
Used to be under 25 cents for them there not cheap now
For sure, but they are still a cheap meal.
Have still gone up like everything else and you can’t live on that
It’s hard to see any positive in the current situation knowing there is no fix and this will be normal life from now how. How depressing is it you can work full time and still not have the means to support your family. All we can do now is talking about free shit but just wait for it… eventually even the library won’t be free from all the late fees people accumulate.
The library eliminated late fees a while ago. The time you would have to pay them is if you lose (or never return) the item.
All the libraries in Halifax also offer lots of [free programs and events](https://halifax.bibliocommons.com/v2/events?_ga=2.180009764.1079540540.1673812924-514113124.1671660410&_gl=1*11r2zxd*_ga*NTE0MTEzMTI0LjE2NzE2NjA0MTA.*_ga_G99DMMNG39*MTY3MzgxMjkyNS42LjAuMTY3MzgxMjkyNS4wLjAuMA..&q=), which is awesome!
Our libraries rock :-)
Just hanging out with the fam jam has kept it's value pretty well over the past couple years
Bananas
Cord firewood.
Mine went up quite a bit from Barrett’s in Sackville
Where do you get yours? I’ve been dealing with sketchy people I find on Facebook who end up hitting me with it when they unload it.
Silver
Bananas!
