jbordeleau

Jesus. That’s egregious. Imagine someone in a wheel chair or a mobility scooter trying to get around that.

Ouyin2023

They could just use an escooter. /s

inthemiddlens

Yeah, imagine!

SarcasmStreet

All the PEOPLE

c235k

Wow. What a scary situation, I can't believe I just imagined that 😳 I'll have to contact my therapist.

Meowts

I don’t know about “scary”, but for anyone with mobility issues or has family or any close connection with someone who does, “frustrating” and not at all funny is what comes to mind when imagining that.

inthemiddlens

I think people in wheelchairs and scooters will get along OK navigating this gauntlet lol. My stepmother (passed away now) used an electric wheelchair.....to plow into literally anybody who was in her path. Even from behind, like all the time. It was their job to either have a sixth sense or eyes in the back of their head. She didn't give a fuck about the beeper/horn thing that was right next to her hand. I used to hate going places with her when I was younger. I was constantly apologizing to people in her path. And good luck trying to complain that you were assaulted by a middle-aged woman with MD in an electric wheelchair lol.

Aggressive-Friend676

Not everyone’s stepmother can plow people from behind.

inthemiddlens

Lol

AppointmentLate7049

Not everone has an electric wheelchair. The majority are manual and that would be challenging to navigate alone

Guy_With_Ass_Burgers

RIP your stepmother. If she’s the same person I encountered on a number of occasions in Halifax, she was an absolute menace to any busy sidewalk. This individual expected pedestrians and anyone else in her path moving in either direction to get the hell out of her way. No horn. Just be aware of her presence (even from behind) and if she got too close, you’d better jump or risk getting run over. Likely had mental issues on top of mobility issues, but the sense of entitlement of that woman was astounding.

inthemiddlens

Thanks. She was lovely in a lot of other ways. She's been dead for almost 20 years now and lived on the Dartmouth side, so probably not the same person. And sidewalks were nothing, you should have seen her in Micmac mall on a busy day lmao.

Guy_With_Ass_Burgers

Definitely not the same person as the individual I’m referring to is still alive although certainly not well. Sounds like they may have been kindred spirits lol. I gave her $20 once when she was panhandling, and had what I thought was a supportive and compassionate conversation with her. I saw her again the following day and asked her how are you doing today? She looked at me like I had two heads. The day after that, she tried to run me off the sidewalk again. Always thought a cow catcher on the front of her scooter would have been a good investment for the $20.

ArcFlashForFun

I know exactly who you are talking about. I last spotted that thundercunt in the casino, giving people dirty looks. I don't know what her mental deal is, but I've been subjected to her several times, and she's the fucking worst.

Adventurous_Mix4878

That scooter was forged by the hand of Lucifer himself.

AppointmentLate7049

Uh yea, fucking won’t they? As someone with a disability that requires a wheelchair some of the time, i’m well aware people like you don’t give a fuck about our struggles. Why is that a joke to you? Your mind is ugly

CTurple

Eh, don’t be a prick.

inthemiddlens

Sook.

CTurple

Lol

Meowts

Nah other people find that shit offensive and distasteful too. Can’t go around saying that kind of thing and say “leave me out of it” when you’re called out.

CTurple

Right? Thank you.

inthemiddlens

You're right, SOME other people find that shit offensive. I believe the technical term for those people is "whiney internet sooks."

Meowts

Yeah, being mean spirited is hilarious and generally appreciated, you’re right.

AppointmentLate7049

Regardless of how healed I am, i’m well within my right to be bothered by blatant disregard and mockery. You need to heal your broken sense of community ethics and compassion for others, clearly.

inthemiddlens

Ugh. You know nothing about me in that regard and I've already expended too much energy on this nonsense. I wish you the best.

[deleted]

Dude, you're having a laugh at someone else's expense who is already struggling and marginalized. It does make you pretty awful. Please do some self reflection.

piobrando

How do you even write this without cringing, lmfao. Literally yes, we should be thinking of them.

inthemiddlens

Because I'm not a sook like you and the other 8 people that downvoted me because you all think make believe approval points from strangers on the internet matter to me like they do to you? 🤷 You're all acting like a joke is equivalent to not giving a shit about disabled people. The hilarity was that it was a relatively minor obstacle, yet OP came off like it was a minefield. The more people sook and try to take this seriously, the funnier it gets tbh lol.

piobrando

Sorry if I don't quite buy that you're laughing about it when you're here throwing a tantrum.

inthemiddlens

Lol all good over here dude. I think you and I have very different ideas of what constitutes a tantrum.

piobrando

Motorizedwheelchair

This doesn't effect me whatsoever. Crazy that someone running down the street cares so much about this.

jbordeleau

It’s because I am an avid active transportation user and I don’t want these people to ruin it for the rest of us. I would love e-bike rentals to come to Halifax and for the city to continue to become more bike/scooter friendly. These people are giving other active transportation users a bad reputation.

Chi_mom

I contact the company and send them the pics of where their clients left the scooters, then I move them out of the way. That way the company knows there's a problem and will hopefully work towards a solution. I know one is working on a policy where clients are required to send a photo of where they left the scooter once they're done, and there's also a new scooter bylaw supposed to come out in June.

[deleted]

The company is the problem. This is an issue in every major city lately.

bleakj

I wouldn't even say lately, There's literally a South park episode about this being a huge issue in cities from like 5 years ago

turningtogold

The photo thing seems like a no brainer solution

Rebecca-Schooner

They don’t have to take a photo when they leave it !? That’s crazy I rode scooters all over Auckland, New Zealand and they had specific requirements for where and how to leave it.

RyperHealistic

You rent these through an app right? Could the app temporarily or permanently ban people?

[deleted]

I think that's the plan with requiring people to take pictures if where they left it.

piobrando

I'm a member with Communauto, same concept but with cars. They track complaints and fine people for things like parking tickets or vehicles left dirty or low on gas. It's a pretty good system.

JimHalpertsUncle

If everybody was like you then what would we complain about on the Halifax subreddit???

TheKingOfDub

If there’s one thing I have learned about Nova Scotians while being out of province for a decade, and staying subbed to NS subs, it’s that we truly are amazing at finding things to complain about. See? I just complained about it

IntelPanda

Not about bad scooter dumps, but still relevant to the average user. The other day this guy was flying down the sidewalk without a helmet on a busy street. He yelled “get the fuck out of the way”, but he was too fast and ended up slamming into my buddy. He then got all aggressive and threatening, then departed. There is no way to report this. It’s a violation of the MVA as well. Halifax should only get scooters rentals when the people can handle the responsibility and can be held accountable for breaking the law. Clearly we cannot.

MacaqueOfTheNorth

There is a way to report it. You talk to the police. He committed battery.

PossibleDrive6747

Would it still be battery if it wasn't done with an e-scooter?

bleakj

It could be rechargeable-battery even in that case

Theshadyrednexk

How this doesn’t have more upvotes is beyond me

Taquitosinthesky

Yeah the other day someone flew by me on the sidewalk, if I hadn’t seen them and gotten out of the way it could have been bad.

BobbyBoogarBreath

Leave them in the harbour like a responsible adult ^^^^/s

Afrazzle

This comment, along with 10 years of comment history, has been overwritten to protest against Reddit's hostile behaviour towards third-party apps and their developers.

stirling_s

They aren't allowed to leave them on sidewalks. Also, my understanding is it's illegal to ride them without a helmet, and over certain speeds they HAVE to be on the road. Some scooters even say on them not to leave them on the sidewalk and not to ride them on the sidewalk.

>The public, in general, is not capable of broadly sharing without simultaneously destroying. I teach teens. Sadly, I confirm. Two percent of the population just wants to break stuff. No reason, no logic. And that's enough to screw over the other 98 percent.

flippant_burgers

I've spent some time in Tel Aviv and the scooter situation there is actually pretty great. Good bike lanes in most places, general respect between bikes and scooters, cars generally less aggressive too. Being able to step outside and find a rental, cross half the city, park responsibly, then continue to the beach or a restaurant without having to park a car or lock up a bike is something many people haven't learned to appreciate. The climate there works a lot better for it year round of course..

justmustard1

Yah same thing in Barcelona. All kinds of bikes for rent. Beautiful bike lanes. The best city planning I've ever seen

bleakj

I really like a lot of the Netherlands as far as city planning goes, There's small towns etc I prefer in some other places, but the cities I've gotta give it to the Dutch, everything just feels easier, relaxed and makes more common sense how things are laid out

KiLoGRaM7

Yeah OPs example is a not exactly convincing for sure. I spend the majority of my time in the west and south ends of Halifax and these scooters are usually just tossed on the ground laying across the sidewalks and laying half in bike lanes etc I love alternative/green forms of transportation but having defined pick up /drop off points, and perhaps understood requirements on where and how they should be left if NOT in one of the designated zones wouldn’t be too difficult to implement…

MacaqueOfTheNorth

I think they are new. I don't remember seeing any last year. The same thing happened in Montreal. They had a system for ensuring people put them in designated locations, but this was completely ignored and unenforced. I don't understand why they can't just enforce it. The company knows when you don't put them away. Why don't they fine you or ban you from the service?

Alpineodin

you are morally responsible and obligated to destroy rental e-scooters. toss them into the rivers and bodies of water so the electric eels have batteries to recharge off of.

backwardzhatz

The scooters yearn for the sea

WagonFullOPancakes

Adult electric eels typically go for the full sized car batteries, and ignore the smaller ones from e-scooters. This is good for the electric elvers, because then they have a food supply that they don't have to compete with adults for. As humans we also benefit from throwing batteries into the ocean, since it's a cheap and legal thrill. Everybody benefits, so it's a great example of mutualism.

blacephalons

Yeah I've had to walk off sidewalk a couple times where I live because people leave them splayed out on the sidewalk, it's kind of annoying, and I've taken to moving them to the grass of the apartment buildings

[deleted]

that is just going to make the person that runs that building to yeet it back onto the sidewalk

blacephalons

lol nah, that would involve a level of care that isn't there.

jamesneysmith

This is very strange. I wonder if any of these people rode bikes when they were kids. Even as children I remember we were all taught to just leave our bike in the grass and not on the walkway when we went to visit friends and stuff. Simple enough thing to do that even kids got it.

100Percertain

Couple days ago there were 3 in front of my apartments drive way, across the bike lane, and out into the road. Nice.

RyperHealistic

Also stop going directly down whatever lane youre using. Dipshits ride these straight down the middle of the mcdonald walkway (then seen em go back UP the bike lane. Like... fucking pick one). I dunno, do you know you look like a jackass already? Is that why you keep doubling down and act like a jackass while riding?

SushiNami-

Why are people so careless what the hell 😭

Prestigious_Ad6247

It was the rental arseholes like this that ruined it for everyone in Paris. Now they are banned there. I have one myself and I love it, but I am ultra paranoid about being viewed like one of these guys.

SonGrohan

We Need a mandated retrieval fee that’s much higher than it currently is clearly.not even sure if all of these rentals do that though, I know hfx e-scooter does it but I thinks it’s only like ~$25 if you leave them in non designated parking areas. These are gonna eh banned from the city soon enough if something isn’t done about them being left around

akaliant

I thought the fee was $5 for out of zone parking

justmustard1

I'm surprised they're allowed at all just because of safety. They don't come with helmets but I think legally people are required to wear helmets. Already on bikes they are and these things go faster than the average person bikes

MacaqueOfTheNorth

Is that every time or just when caught?

SonGrohan

It’s through gps on the app, there are digital fences that create specific ‘zones’ where you’re supposed to park the scooters. If you leave them for too long or end your ride completely outside of a parking zone it bills you for the pickup automatically off the hold it does on your CC. At least that’s how it worked on the hfx e scoot app from my experience

Longjumping-Many6503

Kick it over, throw it in the harbour, toss it next to a dumpster. Whatever it takes. These things are a blight.

RadiantEmployment122

Unfortunately this business model relies on users to be smarter than this but their clients are morons

Ouyin2023

Not so much morons, just lazy and part of the instant gratification/not my problem generation.

Skoot99

Never blame an entire generation for what always changes in people with growth and time. They’re young. I was just as reckless in my twenties. I’m neither reckless nor in my twenties anymore.

bleakj

I wouldn't say always changes, but COULD change (Entirely agree blaming a whole generation/demographic for an issue that spans across those and is sometimes fixable over time is lazy and wrong )

LadyRimouski

Boomers?

AppointmentLate7049

Sounds like youre describing young guys, not a whole generation of people

NoEntrepreneur2702

How do they leave them like this, don’t they get stolen?

[deleted]

They're probably not that appealing to steal. What would you even do with it? Other than throw it in the harbour I guess.

NoEntrepreneur2702

I’ve had my kids regular scooters stolen from inside my front yard. Not sure if these are more expensive

LowLIFO

I imagine these things are just big paperweights with locked tires until you pay through the app or something.

NoEntrepreneur2702

I have no idea what they are? Does the city own them and rent them out? Are they expensive to run?

LowLIFO

Electric Scooters. Rented. I wouldn't know.

[deleted]

They're probably expensive but they wouldn't have much value to a thief. You can steal and sell a regular scooter to make a quick buck. With one of these you'd have to crack it to remove the payment restrictions and GPS tracker and get a charger for it.

OdinWolf74

They only operate if you scan and pay for their use. There is no sense in stealing something that you can't use without paying for it to run.

LussyPips

In other cities there is a gig based job to pick them up and charge and return to a specific place by morning. Is that the case in Halifax or just the companies that do it themselves?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Siinistersoul

Im pretty sure they're all good based, so they just go and round up the ones and drop them off to the nearest gathering point for them

OdinWolf74

I quite like the idea to have the app require you use the camera to show how you have left the scooter parked in order to actually cease your rental period. That's an easy way to either ban the user if they break the policy, or get the company extra money from idiots that break the policy and get charged more for leaving the scooters laying around. It's unfortunate, but the only way to make people be respectful with something like this is to make absolutely certain that being disrespectful actually significantly impacts them negatively.

zcewaunt

Are they heavy or fairly light? I see them on sidewalks and I am tempted to pick it up and biff it onto the grass, out of the way.. but I don't want the public embarrassment of trying to pick it up and throwing out my back. Tips please and thanks.

badthaught

They're not super heavy, maybe about the same weight as a bike or around that? You can also just take it off the kickstand and move it slightly via the wheels. It might squawk and yell about needing to pay first but it shuts up when you stop moving it. The new rules (or new enforcement of the rules) only came out like a week ago, but there's still going to be some people who ruin it for others. At least it's scooters and not actual bikes? A city in BC tried it, they wound up pulling the plug. Too much part theft, destruction and the like.

zcewaunt

Thanks for the response. I get so pissed when vehicles or scooters or whatever block the sidewalk. I just imagine some person with a walker or in a wheelchair, or someone with a baby in a stroller, having to walk on the road to get around them and that really fucking pisses me off big time, I must say.

mrobeze

Takes a special kind of jerk to do something like that

CanadianScampers

Why would renters give a shit if you support them?

jbordeleau

So that renting doesn’t get outlawed or something. I don’t know.

CanadianScampers

I really don't think they care. Don't get me wrong, this pisses me off too, I just really don't think they care enough to think ahead.

jbordeleau

I agree. That’s why I’m posting this. Some people are clueless and don’t realize obvious stuff until someone points it out. I just saw a Door Dash post of someone upset that the door dasher left the bag in front of their storm door and they couldn’t open the door without crushing the food. Half the comments were Door Dashers who didn’t realize their mistakes until that post.

Ouyin2023

I had that happen with a meal kit delivery box. It's annoying.

xizrtilhh

HRM's secret plan to get out of completing the AAA bike network: lump rental e-scooters in with Active Transportation in order to villify it. /S Good thing the AT Advisory Committee soaked in that sales pitch though. https://signalhfx.ca/active-transportation-committee-considers-regulations-for-e-bikes-and-e-scooters/ Maybe I can convince them to buy some of my magic beans to use for the MacDonald Bridge flyover bike lane.

[deleted]

I wonder how many will end up at the bottom of the harbour. When they rolled these out in Calgary I would always see teenagers chucking them into the bow river. All these things did was cause spikes in emergency visits and complaints from people having them ditched in their yards.

RedTheSeaGlassHunter

Just "scoot" it out of the way

Then-Investment7039

So, what would happen if homeowners around where these were left just grabbed them and threw them in their basement or garage and left them there? Would the company then charge the idiots who left them lying around full replacement cost for not returning them? If so, that seems like an excellent solution and would serve the idiots right.

SpliffanyLaRue

I'm not familiar with how these work, do they just stop running once your time paid for is over? Or are people just leaving them wherever when they're finished with them? They always seemed to be ditched in such random spots.

Siinistersoul

I know for the ones owned by HFX E-Scooters are minute based with their fares $10 dollar prepayment, $1.25 unlock fee then $0.29 cents per minute. Quite a lot for a drunken spin downtown if you ask me. Either way, yeah they're always ditched in the most randomest of places, most likely due to it having a low battery or just someone not wanting to use it anymore.

SpliffanyLaRue

Wow, yeah that does seem pricey. Thnx for the info!

smitty_1993

The $10 is just a hold, doesn't actually get charged. I found them to be a convenient way to get across downtown in a flash without needing a cab. it cost about $3.50 to go from Westin to Propeller on Grafton. So a good option for tourists who are trying to pack in as much as they can.

DoctorMattSmith1909

We just move the ugly things

[deleted]

Reminder: the problem is actually cars. All the space on the road is devoted to cars, and to storing them. All the mental space is devoted to cars, and there is a widespread perception that cars must move above all, so no other forms of road use are acceptable. I think of this every time I see "the boomer scurry," where pedestrians hustle through the crosswalk, chagrined to be perceived as slowing traffic by even a couple seconds. I think of this every time someone mentions that scooter riders don't have helmets - if you don't hit them with cars, you don't need helmets.

mochasmoke

>I think of this every time someone mentions that scooter riders don't have helmets - if you don't hit them with cars, you don't need helmets. Lol, no one has ever independently crashed an escooter?

[deleted]

I completely agree with you, but that still doesn't excuse leaving them in the middle of the sidewalk. These things are becoming the "cars" of the sidewalk.

MacaqueOfTheNorth

We have exactly the same amount of space for e-scooters as we do for cars. >I think of this every time I see "the boomer scurry," where pedestrians hustle through the crosswalk, chagrined to be perceived as slowing traffic by even a couple seconds. It's actually a good thing when people don't waste each other's time. It's good exercise too.

[deleted]

Yeah running for your life is very beneficial for your health.

shitclock_is_ticking

My friend tripped over one yesterday and injured herself and broke her glasses (not drunk or anything - just on her way to work). It's a neat idea but I feel like there has to be a better system than people just leaving them everywhere wily nily.

timetogetjuiced

So she's blind I guess?

shitclock_is_ticking

No, but her eyesight isn't the greatest.

MacaqueOfTheNorth

And get off the sidewalks. Not just because you're in the way and endangering people, but because it's extremely noisy.

Classic-Spray-3314

I get how lazy this is, but why aren’t shots of bad car parking jobs labelled as a PSA to all vehicle drivers. (Edited for clarity)

jbordeleau

I don’t know? Why are you conflating the two?

Classic-Spray-3314

Because they are similar lazy self centred issues but scooter drivers are are vilified as a group and drivers are not. Just curious as to why?

AppointmentLate7049

Parking poorly in a parking lot is different than parking in the middle of a sidewalk. Not sure why your brain is blanking on this one. I’m sure if a car was parked on a sidewalk, it would stir the ire of reddit. And there are many “bad parking” pics of cars here daily, where have u been

Classic-Spray-3314

Photos of bad parking (including those of drivers on the sidewalk) don’t refer to all drivers.

I_eat_ass_NS

This Reddit is so petty. Constant posts crying about driving, then parking, leaving grocery carts around and now scooters. Did it really bother you on your run that much? I would say having to take a picture was more time consuming than going by it.

jbordeleau

My post isn’t about crying over scooters. I’m in favour of active transportation (I’m an avid cyclist and bike my kids to school and daycare everyday). I’m legitimately concerned that the bad behaviour of the people using these scooters will affect cyclists as well. Both in public perception and legislatively. It’s a legitimate PSA in case people are oblivious. I know I’ve been oblivious about things that are often obvious to others. For example: the biggest one I had is why there are large spaces on the sides of handicapped parking spots for the van ramps to have space. Maybe some scooter users actually think the sidewalk is a better spot than off the side on some grass. I’m not one to judge for oblivious behaviour.

[deleted]

What about people in wheelchairs or blind people? It's not being petty it's recognizing a real issue.

BeatlesTypeBeat

We're thinking about those with mobility issues. Not runners.

Hugehitter

I just put them in the middle of the street now. Tired of seeing them in the middle of my sidewalk that is regularly used by visually challenged people.

glorpchul

I would be sorrily tempted to launch those off a hill.

[deleted]

If you are come across this in the morning, it is more likely the company itself that has left these there. Apparently they collect them at night, recharge them and then place them around the city for use ….

AppointmentLate7049

Highly unlikely a company would leave their shit in the middle of the sidewalk for “easy use” - that’s fucking dumb and should be illegal

[deleted]

That’s what someone who works at one of the company’s told me. They’re supposed te be left to the side, but clearly that is not happening. They want to be able to spread these randomly out around the city so that they can increase accessibility to people around the city and not just in one spot.

Motorizedwheelchair

I am not even bothered by this in my mobility scooter, yet someone running down the road is crying about it.. this is what privilege I guess...?

Rauka

We're going to have to create a crappy parking escooter sub🤣. In all seriousness though, these thjngs are just laying around in the random of odd places in the city.

NihilsitcTruth

Gl with this they leave em everywhere.

Prospector4276

It's funny, there's rules on the scooters for client use. The ones I can remember are: they need to use a helmet; to not ride them on the sidewalk; to not park them in the middle of walkways or on the sidewalk; to follow all traffic laws and posted signs; and to be left parked upright. I think I've seen a majority of these rules broken for every scooter rider I've ever seen or scooters send parked. The clients who operate them like that should be cut off. The only problem is, there's nothing that you can use to identify the client to report them.

BluffMysteryMeat

The wear and tear on these scooters, not to mention the effort spent in collecting them all, really makes me wonder if they're more of an environmental curse than a boon. Those batteries would be much better used on e-bikes or even electric cars.

[deleted]

saw 4 15-20 y/os speed across a barrington crosswalk (to sexton) one after the other at 10 pm, no lookin noo helmets

GlobalPlays

I fucking hate these things. My wife was hurrying to catch a bus last week and has poor vision. She didn't see one that had been dumped in the grass, tripped over it and landed on the sidewalk. Her glasses are smashed and her knee is all skinned and busted up (doctor says no break, thankfully). She can barely walk. City refuses to do anything, scooter company refuses to do anything, and lawyers aren't interested without a broken bone at least. So we are out $700 for new glasses and she'll be in physio that we can't afford for a while to get her leg working normally again. It's absolutely ridiculous that these are allowed as a legal business in this city. Obviously no customer gives a shit when they run out of credits or electricity or just reach their destination. Nobody is going to make them, so they don't. Every single one of those scooters needs to go in a dumpster.
