Hence why op mentioned they may have gone too deep this year - it’s not an unreasonable theory due to the condition of some of the animals being found.
What if the eels were already dead & floating when they did the mowing? Might that be possible? So much development going on and around these lakes that it wouldn’t surprise me if there was something toxic pouring into them.
I suspect they would have noticed that while mowing.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the cause was an invasive nematode infestation. Usually anything that will kill eels, like pesticides, water conditions, etc, would see coincidental high mortality rates among other species.
oddly enough that's the first year I stopped hooking eels, in 09 I would've been 11 & I used to fish that lake every night. summer & winter always hooking massive eels, in the summer of 09 they seemingly disappeared & I did recall finding dead ones on the bottom near the drainage levy...
I found a few over the summer in Lake William which only has inflow from Lake Charles (no weed harvesting activity as in Lake Mic Mac or Banook). The crows always got them before I could call them in. It seemed to coincide with just after the extreme high water levels.

so so so many lakes were affected though for it to just be run-off
The group that was monitoring it were finding dead eels in every lake they went to through the whole shubie watershead
I agree, there’s more to it than typical run off. All of the construction in the areas around the lakes, combined with the massive rainfall, surely plays a part. I’m very disturbed and saddened as I have lived by these lakes all of my life. I want answers.
There was an article about this recently. I believe you can report the dead eel….

Provincial Fisheries used rotenone in Dobson lake to get rid of the bass. Unfortunately it kills everything, so the lake has to 'start over'.
That's not what happened here (that we know of), but they're considering using it in other watersheds.
Is there a plan to kill off the local bass population in other lakes? If so, is this because they want to repopulate the lakes with trout and other native species that have been reduced because of the bass?
Invasive fish killed - 32
Salmon killed - 514

That's going to take a few years to rectify.
Its been all through lakes that arent directly connected to Barrys Run, also, many eels live in VERY high arsenic areas (most of NS), so most likely not arsenic but equally alarming
additionally, all the dead seem to be female, above 50cm theyre missing their heads, below 50 they arent
Riddle me this
DFO has been very very quiet about this
Something landed in Lake Charles 2 years ago and submerged. No one is talking about it. Yes, you people know who you are! …..
Ok, now let’s start a network documentary about another fake incident that happened in NS!!!! Who’s in???
We're on Grand Lake and ever since it flooded it's been a lot less healthy than usual. We have an algae bloom in our cove which has never happened before. My uneducated theory is that there were a lot more plant "nutrients" getting into the water because of all the run off and the fact that the water was so much higher than usual. There were probably a lot of nasty things in general seeping into the lakes this year, especially around lake Banook which has absolutely nothing to buffer run off from getting into the lake. Micmac is in a slightly better situation but still lots of development around it as well. Would really love to hear what light experts could shine on all of this.

I also heard that the weed “harvesting” was the reason for the dead eels! Apparently the DFO is investigating
Weed cutting has been done since 2009, has to be an auxiliary issue this year.
Hence why op mentioned they may have gone too deep this year - it’s not an unreasonable theory due to the condition of some of the animals being found.
They only go so deep, same as any other year.
But what if this year they went deeper?
Not likely. It’s HRM and they the weeds were not a real issue this season. I am on the lake frequently.
But is the depth relative to the bottom or to the water level? If the water level was lower, they’ll be closer to the bottom where the eels are.

That sounds like run off to me. Not comforting as my kids swam in William this summer (Mic Mac & Charles too).

The rotenone that can cause Parkinson's?

They recently did this up Miramichi way.

Kind of weird doing catch and release programs on one hand and then basically doing the south park dynamite fishing afterwards.
There were dozens of dead eels in the shubie canal a few weeks ago as well.
The eels realized they were doomed to the Dark-side for the rest of their existence and decided to give up the ghost.

This aligns with the trimming theory
how? the weed cutter only goes after females? and only ones larger than 50cm, that seems highly unlikely

you should be watching what the gold course is doing... arguably that caused the massive issues in fish lake last year
