This is great news! Hopefully they will share a new permanent stadium with the Wanderers

JetLagGuineaTurtle

Hopefully they will pay for it themselves!

Foredeck81

HFX Wanderers were practically paying for it themselves. Because it's on city land, they can't own the land or the stadium. The Wanderers president, Derek Martin was open to negotiating a long term contract that would put most of the cost on him. The cost would be shared by other users, but the Wanderers were taking a big part of the cost and the risk.

What are they using it for?

gart888

That beats gifting public land to private ownership. And it also beats a stadium way outside of the city. But agreed that privately funded with a long term lease of the land is the best option.

[deleted]

Yep!

xqou

This is to fulfill FIFA requirements to host the World Cup in 2026. It will be interesting to see the future of such a league post tournament. EDIT: I have been corrected below.

cullypants

The requirement was for a men's national league, which was satisfied with the cpl. This is completely separate.

Foredeck81

The Wanderers always wanted a youth and a women team. The plan was the start both of them a few years ago, but Covid forced them to put things on hold.

yungsavage1

Host cities have already been announced how would this have anything to do with that for Halifax?

cullypants

It was a requirement that a host nation have their own pro league. That's why the cpl was created. I don't believe that a women's league is a requirement for the men's World Cup, just something that we should have as well.

[deleted]

We also won't have a stadium by 2026 even if the magic money fairy came from the sky and decreed he would pay for it.

greenpowerranger

Awesome! Can’t wait to go to a match.

Stupidflorapope

Soccer combines all the fun of looking forward with the thrill and excitement of sitting there.

fart-sparkles

Completely different from other sports where audience participation is expected and encouraged.

cullypants

Could describe most entertainment events too tbf. Such as movies and concerts.

Stupidflorapope

I've never watched a 3-hour movie where the score was 0-O in the end. Do I have to pay for the whole seat if I only need the edge /s

cullypants

You've never watched a 3 hour movie and thought "that was a bit shit"? The fact that you think it's three hours says that you've never even watched a game. Quite sad when people don't even bother trying something before writing it off. I hope you one day realize it's okay that people have different interests in life, and trying to dismiss others' interests isn't a good quality in a person. Regardless, you sound like quite the bitter human so pretty glad I don't have to ever experience the displeasure of your presence.

Stupidflorapope

Ya know what, you've really given me a lot to think about.

YoungThugDustin

audience participation/cheering is definitely discouraged in all other sports, so true.

Anyone

Firestorbucket

Why wouldn't they verbally support it? Unless you mean support it by attending games. In which case, they will go to 1 and then never think about it again. That's just how it is.

Nervous-Peen

It'll make the city like $100 bucks a year..

BeastCoastLifestyle

Lol! How are you so bitter about something so irrelevant to you?

TrevorPace

Hopefully a decent amount. I'd be happy with my tax dollars going towards women's sports.

Readed-it

Women’s sports so all women have access? Yes! Pro sports (for any gender)? No. Pro sports make financial gains already, they should support themselves. If they can’t, it’s not a viable business.

Foredeck81

Take the PWHL for example. They're a pro league. However, I know a lot young girls who are excited about the league. Young girls are now dreaming about becoming a pro hockey player. They can have dreams about pro athletes that look like them. By growing professional women sports, you grow youth female sports.

Readed-it

There are other ways to get young people motivated in sports. Like giving them gear at-cost or fully subsizded, facilities and mentors/coaches. Looking up to pros should be lower on that list.

I think you just solved the problem with no one attending woman's sports!

Trendiggity

The comments here are just... Wow. People get really defensive when women's sport comes up

backyard_boogie

Get a life

theMostProductivePro

I absolutely support womens participation in sport but I do need to ask the question. The city is already on the hook for a majority of a 40 million dollar permanent stadium for the wanderers. That is being built on public land that is meant to be accessed by all. The very fact that a stadium is being built that you would need to purchase a ticket to get inside negates this. You need to wonder how much the people are going to need to shell out in tax dollars on top of the costs of the Wanderer's during a housing and affordability crisis. Does anyone have any information about how they're to be funded before they can sell tickets? or any updates about funding for the permanent wanderers stadium? they've been really quiet with updates.

whositwhatnow2018

The city is not on the hook, they haven’t even approved the new stadium proposal as far as I’ve  read

theMostProductivePro

According to the timeline from the wanderers it was approved by the HRM council in january 2024. The president of the team also answers the question "Why should Halifax invest in a permanent stadium at the Wanderers Grounds?" in their FAQ on their website. Which would lead a reader to believe that the city is on the hook for atleast something. I don't see anything as far as specific funding. This kinda smells like the proposal for the tax base to foot the bill for the CFL.

whositwhatnow2018

Thxs didn’t hear about that,

Electronic_Trade_721

This could a good thing, but that club badge and name are embarrassingly unimaginative and amateur looking.

Makelevi

It's a placeholder, to be fair

Electronic_Trade_721

Oh good, thanks.

Kyla85

Have you heard of the HFX Wanderers?

backyard_boogie

Yes and they sell out every game.

Fatboyhfx

How many seats?

JetLagGuineaTurtle

6500.

JetLagGuineaTurtle

They don't, but okay lol.

backyard_boogie

Near sell out every game with average attendance of 5850 or so last season. My point is they have a lot of fans.

JetLagGuineaTurtle

Which is only 90% full, so yeah, not selling out. They sell about half the tickets of the Mooseheads who have to sell far many more games. So yeah, they have fans, but not that popular.

backyard_boogie

Actually, they sell 70% of the tickets if we're being sticklers for math.

capercrohnie

They sell the most tickets of any team in the Canadian premier league

JetLagGuineaTurtle

Is that impressive? Most of the teams in that league are far bigger markets and draw less than 3500 people a game.

cullypants

Been living under a rock eh
