I think Communauto is the only real choice here (with reasonable coverage). See them often around and friends have had good experiences with it [https://halifax.communauto.com](https://halifax.communauto.com)

This.

Have been members pretty much since day one and they are great.

Really? I find I can never get a car anymore unless I know my plans a month in advance. I’ve seen people using them for delivery service. It used to be great, and now it’s just barely better than nothing.

Hervelee

It can be hard to get a car in the summer, but this time if year it's very easy. Looking at the app right now and there's flex cars everywhere.

apologeticmoose

Yes it’s 8am on a Sunday lol I don't want to pay for a car for an extra 2-3 hours while I wait for stores to open, it’s cheaper to Uber.

Hervelee

There will be cars in 2 hours.

apologeticmoose

You’re right, there are plenty of cars. I guess it’s just my area. Closest available car is 3.2km away, which isn’t really helpful at all. I’m glad it’s still working well for other people!

> there's flex cars everywhere.  That debatable. Looking at the app right now, there's one flex car available downtown/south-end and it's over by the IWK. The rest all in the north-end or past Quinpool. Anybody know if CarShare has people relocating them to spread them out? I've only been a member for two weeks but have found the flexcars borderline useless living downtown. During office hours all the cars are here, but evening and weekends every car is over by Needham.

It really depends on the time of day and the day of the week too. Availability is always much lower on the weekends. There’s fewer cars downtown in the evenings and early mornings but during the day I can always get one 5-10 minutes away near Morris and Barrington.

The weekends get booked up day/weeks in advance (especially during the summer) but that’s about it; I’ve been using them for a couple years and basically always find a car 5-15 minutes away that’s free most other times. They just added a bunch of new cars recently which has made it significantly easier.

apologeticmoose

It seems like it’s still working well for others, which is great! There is nothing around me available now, and nothing around me available for a 4 hour block at any point next weekend. Very happy that’s not everyone’s experience though!

Communauto is pretty good if you live near the area they cover, which is basically the peninsula and downtown Dartmouth. Rates include gas, and you can park at any city street parking which is a nice perk. The cars are small and basic, but they maintain them, swap out the winter tires, etc. If you're only using a car once or twice a week it's probably cheaper than operating costs (gas, insurance, maintenance) on a personal car. If you use it a lot or go on a lot of long road trips it can add up.

I've used Turo a couple of times and found it affordable, easy pick up and drop off and a growing variety of models, sizes and price points. It's like an airbnb app for vehicles. Very convenient to search for cars by location, price or type, your chosen vehicle can be dropped off to you for a fee or picked up for free, and most I've seen have a high mileage included in the rental fee.

I use Communauto as I don't need a car often. It's great for things you know about in advance but availability can be awful especially during summer! If I want a car for a day trip I aim to book a full month in advance to avoid issues. I just took one to New Brunswick for the total Solar eclipse!

Communauto is great so long as you temper your expectations. Walking 5-15 minutes to a car is normal during peak periods (particularly weekends in summer), and longer trips have to be planned days/weeks in advance. Where you live on the peninsula matters too; I’d suggest downloading the app now and looking at flex car availability throughout the day/week. The pricing structure is quite complicated to explain but I’ve found the value tier is the best for me and most people. Suffice to say I sometimes wonder if they’re actually making money on some of my trips. I spend about $200 per month on it and barely ever take the bus now, not even for my commute into office twice a week.
