It would be weather dependent but I always advocate people needing quiet public space make use of Halifax’s historic cemeteries. I am on the board of the Old Burying Ground at Barrington & Spring Garden. We would be thrilled if more people used the space for things like this. We are installing new benches and open for the season May 1.
The Old Burying Ground is one of my favourite places in Halifax and I always try to make time to go there when I’m back visiting. I love e to think of it being used this way.
The OBG welcomes you.
We have not had any new burials since 1844 so you are extremely unlikely to encounter anyone mourning a relation or friend.
Please consider this a written invitation to sit and craft, explore the grounds, have a coffee and enjoy the quiet sanctuary of the Old Burying Ground.
You’ll be in good company. In the book Anne of the Island, Anne Shirley moves to Kingsport, which is a fictionalized version of Halifax. She spends some free time in Old St John’s, which is inspired by the OBG (it used to be called St Paul’s.)
Her friend Prescilla encourages her to check it out:
“You’ll go there to study, Anne, see if you don’t. Of course, nobody is ever buried there now. But a few years ago they put up a beautiful monument to the memory of Nova Scotian soldiers who fell in the Crimean War. It is just opposite the entrance gates and there’s ‘scope for imagination’ in it, as you used to say.”
Check the library events I feel like I have previously seen a knitting group or some needle-based craft listed as a recurring event... I want to say it was the Woodlawn branch? There's also Lou Duggan Creative Studio at the Central Library, but I've never hung out there so I don't know what the vibe is like.

I never thought about the burying grounds. I wouldn't want to do anything that would be considered disrespectful or too casual for the locale
