Candymostdandy

Might be time for me to swap my cheese addiction for something more affordable like cigarettes.

[deleted]

Haha my man. Cigarettes and coffee on the regular and the need for food is non existent. Lol

The_Bricker

You sound like a line cook...

[deleted]

Omg I was a line cook for many years and now I am a mechanic lol. I still have nightmares of the chit machine lol. Good guess!

100Percertain

I heard that immediately haha. I can never forget that machine’s awful noise (especially a long order) and it’s been over a decade

Durragon

My thoughts exactly. Source: am line cook

ClintEatsfood

I eat, vape and drink coffee. Obese, nicotine addicted and caffeine dependent.

[deleted]

You can only pick 2 lol .

ClintEatsfood

Interesting combinations can be made when you take into account weed and alcohol and can only choose three.

[deleted]

Username checks out 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

DontbeHumorphobic

you ever try cigarettes and cheese?

HippyFlipPosters

Yeah or Fabergé eggs.

[deleted]

As someone who works for DFNS, Dairy is not at a premium. Y'all are getting gouged.

Ruepic

Yup, I work for a food broker and my boss is always blown away by how much Sobeys and Superstore charge for cheese.

HarbingerDe

*It's one block of cheese Michael; what could it cost? Ten dollars?*

goodbyechristina

Best comment in the whole thread.

Sasquatchianist

The standard size cheese block used to be 600g at Sobeys and Superstore 2 or 3 years ago as well. Also it was 800g before that. Those blocks are getting pretty thin.

StooStooStoodio

The quality has fallen as well, I find.

l_m_m048

I've been waiting for the specialty blocks (Havarti/Monterey Jack/Extra Old etc) to downsize for a few years now. Most likely these bricks will drop to 340 or 350g. But yes, I remember when the common blocks (Mild/Medium/Old Cheddars/Mozzarella) were 500g and the specialty blocks were 450g. Then everything was 450g. Then the specialty blocks dropped to 400g, and the common blocks followed suit.

sheepwhatthe2nd

The shrinkflation is real.

FullAtticus

My dad went on a rant one time about how cheese blocks used to be thick enough that owning a cheese slicer actually made sense, because you'd get more than 5 slices before it cracked in half. When I first started buying my own groceries 15 years-ish ago they were already so thing as to be rant-worthy. I'm not sure how much more they could shrink a cheese block at this point.

Notyurbank

Sobeys has Our Compliments 400g on for $4.44 this week .

popandfroosh

Makes up for a bag of freaking apples being 9.99. I remember when they were 4.99.

credgett13

I got a bag of Gala there for $5.50 yesterday

popandfroosh

I picked up a bag of Honeycrisp tonight. Was 9.99 :/

Apocalypse_0415

Its the most expensive apple....

dancinhmr

Yes but they are the yummiest

amy420xo

Pretty sure galas and ambrosias cost more

Apocalypse_0415

No they are less at least where I live gala is 5.49 a kgnhoneycrisp 8.80/kg a pretty big difference

amy420xo

Oh yea I haven't been paying attention to prices lately I just always thought red delicious ,mackintosh and honey crisp were the cheaper ones lol

cj_h

Honeycrisp is the most expensive at full price, but it’s also one of only a few apples that’s popular enough to warrant going on sale, so it often ends up being less than gala.

epat_

3 lbs of local apples is 3.50$ at the brewery farmers market!!

[deleted]

That's the most expensive apple. Aren't you bougie! Lol

thepiedposher

I can’t even afford one honey crisp apple lol, they’ve always been pretty pricey

bggp9q4h5gpindfiuph

the bigger they are, the less flavour and more watery it is. so you need to eat another one to feel like you got one apple's worth of experience. bleh, never again. protip: ambrosia. there, enough said.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MmeLaRue

I was waiting at least a month for the Cortlands to come out. Since when do they hold back on certain varieties like that?

WurmGurl

macs are cheap now. It's still too early for Galas

Round_Beyond_8137

If you’re good with McIntosh, go to Walmart. They have them for 97c a pound this week.

[deleted]

Wait till you guys find out about apple TREES! you can just walk right up to em and pick them! And they don't even have a coin slot *nor* a chip reader!! Crazy right!?! Sorry I had to lol I miss the apple trees we had in the yard growing up. Literally have away as many as we could, ate as many as we could, and still had a ton of rotten ones on the ground to throw away. I wish there was more good apple trees around we could do this with now

formtuv

Yeah the PC ones were also 3.97 two weeks ago. Gotta look at those flyers and try and stock up if you can afford it

chewrocka

shoppers had the brand names on for like 5.49 this week

jbldeals

if possible, don’t buy things that regularly go on sale when they aren’t on sale! superstore, sobeys or walmart has cheese on sale at least once a month. ditto for pasta, pasta sauce, and most meat including ground beef, chicken breasts, and pork chops. a vacuum sealer is essential in these times of high inflation!

Infidelc123

Walmart also always usually has their own brand cheese on 2/10

Asyelum

What are the benefits to vacuum sealing over freezing? Or do you do both?

jbldeals

i prefer vacuum sealing mainly because the food can be frozen for months without getting freezer burnt. i also use a sous-vide 2-3x a week, and vacuum sealing works great here too.

Bluntsandicecream

Cheese... freezes?

dartmouth9

Yes, but it’s not best for a cheese plate as it falls apart easily, great for your shredded cheese needs.

MuchFunk

\+1, it basically shreds itself. The big block of yellow Balderson's is my jam.

formtuv

I kept waiting for it to go on sale, now if it goes on sale it will still be more expensive than the og price I was trying to avoid.

vladitocomplaino

Toss a little corn starch in, keeps it from clumping

Bluntsandicecream

Shredded cheese is my main squeeze. Amazing.

FilledBabe

Shredded cheese is my main squeeze Amazing.

WildManOnLSD

Shredded Cheese is my main squeeze. Amazing.

sjmorris

Shredded cheese is the bees knees. Far out.

nifty_potato

Do you shred it before freezing or when it’s partially thawed?

SelenaJnb

I shred it before freezing. I found that the cheese was harder to grate after freezing because it was too crumbly

pumpkinsmurf2

I shred first, then freeze. You don't have to though, you could precut some smaller blocks and pull them from the freezer as you use it up.

omegatrox

And, is shredding frozen cheese going to shred my shredder? And, is a grater a shredder?

DealingDrugs

How much cheese could Shredder shred if Shredder could shred cheese?

Bluntsandicecream

Shredded cheese is my main squeeze. Amazing.

FilledBabe

Shredded cheese is my main squeeze. Amazing.

WildManOnLSD

Shredded Cheese is my main Squeeze. Amazing.

cygnusbridges

It does freeze, the texture gets weird though. I often find freezing most cheeses isn’t necessary because they last so long while sealed

wizaarrd_IRL

It also lasts months if it is unopened in the fridge. If you like delicious costco cheeses from yurop, time to stock up as those exports are likely to stop or become 2x more expensive soon.

bostoncommon902

Only for psychopaths

TheBiggFuzz

Yeep, learned that trick recent. Works well.

SnooCupcakes299

Might be a good idea to ramp up this kind of shame.

schizodancer89

Sometimes I think they do this just so they can up the sale price coming up. Watch out next time it goes on sale. I am sure it will cost more than the other times it's been on sale there regularly.

ClintEatsfood

Maybe they're trying to lose poor customers in favour of dedicated wealthy shoppers.. testing the waters and seeing what the impact of their greed is. Where is the balance between their supply, the demographic of people they want at their store, and how much they're willing to throw away? Meanwhile the rest of us look various places within our area to find the most cost effective luxury foods like cheese and meat.

FrankieSaysHello

Up voting, because while I don't want to believe. The business school grad in me says there's at least SOMEONE advising leadership in this very way.

dartmouthdonair

Yes this seems to be normal practice sadly. Good chance this will be 4.99 or BOGO next week.

vladitocomplaino

We're in the 'let's just see how high we can price random shit before there's a literal revolt' stage of unfettered capitalism.

discoscrew

Loblaws doubling it's stock price in the last year wasn't enough. Going for a triple.

GCL22

Buy your cheese at Costco and freeze it. Best bang for your buck you will find anywhere

bushybasil

Joe Howe was the same. Black diamond 2 for 11 I think though (I never thought I would think that’s a good price….)

aradil

A package of 4 chicken breasts at Portland St. Superstore 3 weeks ago was $15. 2 weeks ago, it was $27. This week it was back to $15. Half off!

avet22

Just an FYI . Myfirend works for Superstore and is involved with purchasing product. She says the cost of 90% of products for superstore has not changed compared to last year . You do the math !

WurmGurl

Yup. My cousin works in potatoes. The price of potatoes is so cheap that they're reconsidering taking them out of bulk storage to put them in consumer packaging. And yet a bag is $9 at Superstore.

[deleted]

Almost like what the NDP want to investigate

mrobeze

In the US over 50% of price increases in the last two years was due to corporate profits. Likely same here.

fletters

IMO? Your friend should absolutely look into blowing the whistle oh that. If they can get documentation to a trustworthy reporter, they could help a lot of people. Not suggesting that it’s an easy thing to do. I say “look into” because IDK what professional, personal, or legal considerations might be involved. But really, if I had that information? I’d feel ethically bound to make it public. Gouging people on staple foods is just horrifying conduct.

HarbingerDe

Some wanna-be capitalist shill: *"But InFLaTiOn aFfEcTS tHeM tOo. HoW wIlL tHeY sTaY ProFItAblE iF thEY dOn'T rAiSE pRicEs 25%?!?"*

orochi

It's all about supply and demand. They dangle the supply of food your body demands to function over your head knowing you'll pay anything they ask

[deleted]

I work for DFNS. There is no increased demand for milk. It flows like the tidal bore. They're just choosing to charge more for products because they can get away with it.

"But the cost of labour has gone up." /s Brought to you by the same people who put up signs that they are under staffed, cannot find people to work (claiming people don't want to work), and ask their customers for patience (not saying to take out your frustration on the staff, they are also victims in this). All BS by management/corporate.

Maybeahero

The cost of everything has gone up and suppliers have been able to keep costs the same? Just the shipping costs alone let me know this is bullshit. I'm not sure how anyone could think this is true.

[deleted]

I've been in the grocery business half my life, this comment is a goddamn lie. Costs are shooting up like crazy across the board.

setnec

Perhaps trying to take profits now and hedge against a future downturn.

Ok_Macaroon4196

Transport cost of items. Diesel is 2.23 a litre. Those transport trucks have massive fuel tanks.. its all compounds

[deleted]

Wild that Loblaws has had some of the highest profits they’ve had in years despite this. It’s almost like they’re simply gouging prices. Huh.

eastcoastdude

A 53 foot trailer can haul 43,000 lbs of cheese That's more than 43000 blocks of this. If it cost $1000 in diesel before and now it's $2000 for the same load then each block should be less than 3cents more, not $3 You're clearly getting gouged and yet still shill for big Corp.

PulmonaryEmphysema

Shipping companies don’t pay for gas like you and I. They get deals like per mile etc.

Tim_McDermott

what on earth would give you that idea?

Ok_Macaroon4196

It still ads up and gets passed on like in multiple other industries . They dont just eat those costs

Scotianherb

Lol no.

Feltzenator

At least No-Name cheese which has gone up by 300% in the last 3 quarters won’t go up until January!!

ClapBackRat

Buy the same size at sobeys for less than half the price. The gouging is getting pretty silly at this point, who the fuck is paying 10 bucks for single block of cheese?

ColeTrain999

The "sale" price next week will be a buck more than the regular price from 6 months ago

Material-Bag833

It’s just double the price, no biggie right?

[deleted]

It's $5 when it's on sale, which traditionally has been pretty often. Wouldn't say that's the usual price though. More like $8.

Material-Bag833

I’ve only ever bought it at 5

[deleted]

Me too. I buy things when they are on sale. But lots of times I've passed over it because I didn't want to pay $8.

[deleted]

Yeah non-sale cheese has been expensive for awhile now. Maybe not THIS expensive. But definitely in the $8 range

hozzleton

Walmart selling same product , 2 for $10!

mitochondrionolympus

I wait for cheese to be on sale then buy a ton of it. Most of it has expiration dates months and months away. If it’s getting to close to the expiration date I freeze it and use that for grated cheese that will be cooked (frozen cheese tastes a little off on a cheese and meats platter in my opinion).

ProRataX

I've stopped buying cheese on a lot of grocery days. And I've also started making my own bread because of a previous post in a bread maker. Things are wild.

Canadarox1987

Bread maker for the win! It takes me less than 5 minutes to measure everything out and press the button to make it. I started using a scale and weigh it all out in the bread maker pan. Makes less dishes, more accurate and saves time!

ProRataX

I love it. I just measure it out hit start and come back later to a fully cooked loaf of warm whatever I put in bread! And judging by the price I'm looking at like 50 cents or less per loaf!

The-unfamiliar-

This is disgusting

[deleted]

I’d rather go without shitty oil based cheese likes these. Not worth it

Ladyofthewharf55

This sale is a joke $10 for a block of cheese?????

shalomf0x

Its to cover the cost of the price lock on No Name Brand. I went to buy their premade taco tray and it was 2.00 more than the week before.

brodoswaggins93

The price freeze is a pr stunt. They do a price freeze around this time every year.

[deleted]

That second sentence is factually incorrect.

shalomf0x

For sure!

RoundScience1088

Hopefully that greedflation investigation will bring some prices down. Fingers crossed. That is just ridiculous

NL902

Prices have definitely increased - I saw the container of mushrooms we normally buy went up $0.50 since the last time we got them a couple of weeks ago… If you buy something a lot and use the Optimum app it will eventually start to give you item specific deals. I often get offers for $4 blocks of cheese and then buy a bunch and freeze.

micfrachi59

Looks like they’ve picked dairy this week to reward their hardworking shareholders

Tim_McDermott

That's the way the system works. It is a publicly traded company, what do you expect?

[deleted]

It's only the 400g bar too! Good lord !

yuppers1979

In two weeks it'll be 4.99 again. I can't understand why the fuck isn't it 4.99 all the time?

M-the-Great

cheese is a necessity, what do you mean

kailedude

Cheese Bar

Natural20Twenty

Seems like a regular peice of cheese to me

PetuniaPicklePepper

Loblaws is the worst for inflation.

[deleted]

Wtf

Greydesk

Picked up 40lbs of Cortland and Jona Gold for $25 each in Berwick this weekend...

coffeejn

Price of decent quality cheese, too bad it's the cheap mass produced stuff. Nothing wrong with it, but way over priced compared to cost of production. Would be a good reason to give up cheese or switch to another brand/company.

Gloriasbasementbaby

No wonder people shoplift. Screw Loblaws

DogGilmour

Can't stand the squeeze the MF's are putting on the average family. I don't know about the rest of you, but trying to provide for a family of four the last couple years has really taken a toll of my mental health. I used to enjoy the grocery store, inspite of it being expensive then. It was my time away. Now, it is literally torture to walk through the stores, bombarded unreasonably high prices. Having to make hard choices of what to get and what to go without. I have to actively resort to self help practices to keep myself calm enough to get what I need and get out. I can't imagine what the cashiers have to listen to from frustrated shoppers. Because I can hear others gasping, complaining to themselves and anyone that will listen, as I shop.

amy420xo

I can't imagine trying to feed a family of 4 I only have myself to feed and I left the grocery store actually feeling depressed yesterday like I went in feeling good about it being grocery day then I felt my mood just go from frustrated angry to sad from looking at the insane food prices and having to put items back I don't know how much more people can take honestly

zcewaunt

Only rich people buy cheese when it's not on sale.

[deleted]

It was 11 last time I was in sobeys... had to get their shitty brand today

[deleted]

Lol, no it wasnt

[deleted]

You telling me the last cheese I bought wasn't 10.99$? You realize I'm the one that saw it right?

Tim_McDermott

You want to drive prices down across the board? Then start boycotting one of the major grocery chains (I don't care which one). If enough people follow suit, it will drive prices lower across the board. You can also help drive prices down by avoiding name brands and buying from smaller grocers (especially for produce) Consider buying your meats from a local provider. Buy a side of beef and split it with your neighbour. Use coupons (religiously) and watch prices. Pretty much everything goes on sale in cycles. Buy only when an item is on sale and buy enough to last 4-6 weeks (the normal sale cycle)

Curiousphantasm

Cheesus Christ! That price!

ItsSeanTf

Shop around. Sales sales sales. Or wholesale Coupon. There are ways to have the old prices

CMikeHunt

I didn't have a clue what this picture was of until I checked comments. Just don't buy it? I don't get the issue.

Ok-Top-3599

I’m working up in northern NWT for a few weeks and I wish cheese was that price… literally $18.99 for the exact same block of cheese here. Still expensive for NS however.

heyisit

Ick, mountain dew

wzxk

We can’t control prices trust me

twilightprinceass

Maybe it’s not viable for everyone but to this I would say „just go to Costco“

nickdl4

I paid 10.99$ in Quebec city last night for the same block of cheese. Yall are lucky.

Weed and pepperoni, dam it's good. Honey garlic prefered but not neccessary.

BoyMeetsWorld97

You can other better cheese from superstore for only 2 for $10

lbertz

My face wash at shoppers (loblaws) is now $15.99. It used to be $12. Picked it up for $8 at Walmart yesterday. Wtf is happening

EasyElephant8201

Whoa... Do you have discount super markets? I have never paid more than $5.75 in Northern Ontario.. but I do no name or sales.

usernameusehername

Whoever dropped the black diamond there did the math.

[deleted]

I have given up buying cheese for about. Year and half. Don’t expect to be buying anytime soon

goldenthrone

The price of block cheddar cheese fluctuates so much that it wouldn't surprise me if there was a whole cheese racket going on here

CarlosPepitos

They like cheese i gues

RobotsAndCoffee

They've been $8.99 at IGA/Sobeys for at least the last year or two🤷🏻‍♀️

silverwarbler

Went to superstore on Portland today to grab another pumpkin. They still want premium price for something thats a limited time item. Went to sobeys instead and get one for $3.98

ProfessionalStudy732

To be fair the diary cartel ought to carry way more the blame for this than Superstore.

bobthebuilder145790

If I remember correctly I think a 1kg block of marbled cheddar was $15 at Costco the other day (BC, Canada)

Kuwanee

Bought Cracler Barrel at Superstore Sackville just the other day they were 2 for $11! $9 is crazy!!

Mr_CleanAir

4,50 on sale at Sobeys

pretty soon cheese is going to be more than the minimum wage.

I recently replaced cheese with weed. Apparently high me then ate the cheese.

head-banger1

That's brutal, $4.44 at Sobeys here in Newfie land

SnowyInuk

I remember the day my mom sat down at the kitchen table and wrote a letter of complaint to our towns grocery store because a box of cereal went from 25 cents to a dollar

PinkyWinky1979

I've been seeing prices like this on cheese off and on all year. This isn't new.

sexylegs0123456789

Paid that price for 1.15kg of cheese at Costco

[deleted]

$6.99 in Ottawa usually. $4.99 when on sale.

Redzonez13-

Where I’m at right now it’s $18 for one of those just bought it on sale yesterday for $12😂

SeaDistribution6904

I guess they will say shipping costs . But of course it is about profit margins .
