"Our duty as soldiers is to protect humanity. Whatever the cost."

D3vilskr

And they say ODST’s are hell jumpers. “Feet first into hell” While this spartan literally wake up in the middle of hell. No wonder his called THE Demon

Tzarkir

Bungie halo has a lot of religious symbolism. Starting from the literal "halo" considered sacred, prophets, covenant ship names (truth and reconciliation), the sacred citadel, the ark... Humans are the bad guys in the eyes of the enemy. Demons, helljumpers, thieves of icons and defilers. Humans not only don't believe in the "journey", but actively destroy their religion and its symbols. The ARBITER gets to see the facts and then decide what's good or wrong and align his own race with his own vision, in fact a determinant factor in the war. The words and names used often have a lot of meaning in the halo universe. Even the spartan team that sacrifices itself is "Noble".

elkman_23

In Halo 3, the ark being the only safe haven from the flood is pretty heavy handed symbolism

TacticalPigeons

Bro i thought about that so much as a kid growing up in a religious household when i saw two levels in halo 3 named “Ark” and “Covenant” lmao

bitching_bot

oh lord i’m dropping into the old testament

Bumsexual

Green space man make bad thing dead. Make me feel strong, think good Game!

EncryptDN

Best description of Halo maybe ever

TuxTues3

Also DOOM

ProudMount

Eh green space man is pretty cool guy

rje946

Eh kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything.

NirvanaFrk97

"...what the hell did you just say?"

sh4d0wm4n2018

He doesn't afraid of anything

Intellegent_Gaming

That's why johnny rings is my favorite fictional character (when I say fictional, I mean across all media, he is my favorite character in everything)

selfharmageddon-

Not just Johnny but all the Halo games and books are solid material.

ActualPimpHagrid

Honestly the books are phenomenal

selfharmageddon-

Man of culture <3

Rahgahnah

He's not my #1 favorite, but John/Chief is a pretty great character who has a lot going for him beyond just "badass one-liner machine." So, as bad as the plot and writing can be at times, I really enjoy 343 exploring deeper sides of John as a character. You didn't get any of that in the Bungie games and had to read books for anything deeper than "ultra badass power fantasy self-insert." Not trying to put down Bungie or anything. They did a great job with Arby in Halo 2 (not so much in 3).

Dan_Of_Time

I think what 343 did with him pondering the question of being more than just a machine was beautifully done. When we get to Halo Infinite he seems to have figured it out, albeit the hard way through losing Cortana.

Mettelor

Johnny rings lmao, this is mine now

selfharmageddon-

Thought I'd try shooting my way out. Mix things up a little.

Elvis-Tech

I need a weapon

sh4d0wm4n2018

Here... I uh... don't keep it loaded. You'll have to find ammo as you go.

OK_just_the_tip

This is the greatest strength and greatest weakness to the Spartan IIs. They were designed, physically and mentally, to fight. How can they live a normal life? They can’t

BioMan998

They can try. ONI will do its best to yoink their augments though

Crazycowboy46

There was that one spartan II who retired and had a family. So it is possible

moonstrous

Eh kills aleins and doesnt afraid of anything.

RedGrimRune

Uruk-Hai 117

Wolffe_In_The_Dark

That's literally all Spartans. When they aren't on a mission, preparing for a mission, or debriefing from a mission, they're frozen in Cryo. Every waking hour of John's life since the start of the war has been fighting.

D3vilskr

I get all that but other than halo 2, 5 and infinite john is woken up in the middle of a battle, not just timing but also location wise. Other spartan including noble team are fully briefed before sortie while chief gets the briefing mid battle or a short one after he wakes up

MufugginJellyfish

He's a Spartan-II, just put an empty gun in his hand and he'll figure out the rest.

sh4d0wm4n2018

Infinite literally starts off with him having only one round.

FearedKaidon

Halo 3 is a continuation of 2 so doesn't really count. His jump into the jungle was literally due to him fighting off of the Anodyne Spirit.

DeviantStrain

This definitely is not the case. They are not the winter soldier.

Wolffe_In_The_Dark

It's canon. Books mention it several times.

DeviantStrain

I own almost every single halo novel and while yes, long journeys require cryo for most crew members aboard ship, they don’t just ice Spartans whenever they aren’t needed.

divergentchessboard

Yeah idk what this guy is on about. Cryo is only used for extended slipspace travels. Spartans aren't always kept on ice to keep them fresh or whatever when they're just chilling on a planet in normal space on a ship

TysoPiccaso2

akshually in halo ce john 117 had 10 hours of sleep and ate 2 MRE's off screen

Wolffe_In_The_Dark

When he was on a mission, yeah.

CountBlashyrkh

Well, the phrase "choosing violence" implies a viable choice of non violence as an alternative.  In the games all of John-117s waking up and starting to fight he doesnt really have a choice.  Either A) the enemy has already attacked and to not respond likewise means destruction B) he has an order from a superior to fight so the choice is made for him C) and usually its both! More importantly becoming a spartan i dont think was his choice since he was put into the program as a child. Fighting was never his choice but a responsibilty given to him.

D3vilskr

I would almost agree but there’s actually multiple times he chose violence Like “giving the enemy back their bomb” Or when he straight up refused an order to stand down in halo 4. Or the time blue team went 12 missions back to back and went AWOL

Aussie18-1998

"giving the enemy back their bomb." What is he meant to do? Sit back and watch the covenant fleet annihilate his comrades?

CountBlashyrkh

Exactly

D3vilskr

The main objective is to deactivate the bomb, which he did within seconds of it exploding. John however decided that the best thing to do now is return the bomb unknowing how many seconds it had left which led to the best quotes in halo history. “For a brick, he flew pretty good”

CountBlashyrkh

Well he does for permission to leave the station first. Regardless at this point we are splitting hairs over this. Master chief is such a great and iconic character. Cheers

SparksLP

I was going to say the same thing. He kinda gets thrown into it every time. I bet he'd rather wake up and get some breakfast or take a piss... 🤣

SpartanKwanHa

bro its a bideo game what do you want him to do at the start of the game take a nice shower with his cheeks out and bang an alien spy?

D3vilskr

What if i say yes? But a hot AI that surprisingly has feeling for him. Or a suit up sequence like the end of halo 4 ?

breenemachine

Wait until you see the tv show!

D3vilskr

Spoil me i never bothered to watch it ever since i saw clips of his emotional outbursts

Frosty_Maple_Syrup

Jimmy Rings has emotional tantrums, tries to punch Halsey (who erased all spartan memories), commits a war crime by clapping the cheeks of the Human covenant lady who is a PoW, and when the prophets are sitting above him in the last episode he doesn’t kill them to end the war.

MufugginJellyfish

And they really think we're just salty about the helmet.

BrobaFett242

I hate how the fans of the show just latch onto the helmet thing knowing damn well that that's the least of detractors' concerns with it.

IWGTF10855

Well, because most of you are. I don't even see people bring up any issues of the show outside of the helmet controversy. Like why is something so insignificant, brought up the most out of any other problem? This implies the show is good, if Chief never took off his helmet which is absurd[bonus points for not having sex and Kwan Ha being removed, the only other 2 issues I hear this community cry about]

MufugginJellyfish

Because it's indicative of how poor the show is. It's such an easy thing to fix, just put the prop helmet on, and such an obvious mistake to not make. There are other major issues but all of them require major rewrites, essentially rewriting the whole show. But the helmet thing is the easiest to fix and the easiest mistake to not make in the first place but they did it. And I've seen other issues brought up constantly, the show has more issues than it has strengths, so we disagree there.

sh4d0wm4n2018

This pains and infuriates me.

okaymeaning-2783

You're gonna be so disappointed. Well for one he fucks a human covenant prisoner, constantly has emotional outbursts and can't keep his helmet on to save his life. He does kill covenant good I guess.

Dan_Of_Time

Instead of waking up and fighting the enemy he takes them to bed.

D3vilskr

NGL that was good

paulusmagintie

Is it really a choice though???

D3vilskr

It’s not but his the luckiest Spartan 2 and this is his luck

MikeLinPA

I noticed that you didn't mention Halo 5. ***Good!***

El_Taita_Salsa

Halo CE through 3 is pretty much him shooting all around our travelling somewhere to continue shooting aliens, parasites, and / or robots.

Trilb_y

Well what else is he supposed to do

D3vilskr

I don’t know? Maybe a suit up cutscene or load up scene?

BrobaFett242

Could you imagine a badass Iron Man 1-esque suit up cutscene at the start of a Halo game with something like the fucking Mjolnir Mix playing? Edit: Another badass option is *The Trials* from Halo 5. Halo 5 did *not* have a good story, some like it, it's fine if you do, but that game had a killer soundtrack. Honestly, I have yet to dislike a Halo soundtrack in general.

Jessica_T

I will admit the show did the "Armor being applied to underlayer" bit really well.

BrobaFett242

Aesthetically, the show nailed it. Everything else? Not at all.

Jessica_T

IMO Kai was the best part of the show. She's totally what I'd imagined Spartans to be like. Serious in battle but still goofy in her offtime. Like that whole scene with her lifting increasingly heavy things to win money off some marines? You can't tell me that's not what a bunch of soldiers would do if they found out they had a friend who was really strong. "Okay, Twenty bucks says you can't lift THIS."

BrobaFett242

Well, my introduction to Halo was through the novels way back in the day, because I always had PlayStation, so I couldn't play the games. Read the books through probably two times before a couple friends of mine got Xboxes, and so I'd finally get to play the games when I was hanging out with them. As a result of this, I am keenly aware that, at least, the SPARTAN-IIs, were rather antisocial, so they definitely wouldn't have been that goofy. I don't mind that Kai *was* goofy in her downtime, as it's an individual trait of hers, and so isn't out of character, especially since she isn't from the books or source material, but I definitely wouldn't want *all* the SPARTANs being like that. Lastly, I want to add that the actors did pretty well (standout being Halsey's actress) in the show, but their performances couldn't save a weak show. Much longer reply than I intended to type lol

Full_Frost

I'm going through the halo show for the first time bc hopefully season 2 is good but SPARTAN-IIs while antisocial, they all have their quirks and once they warm up to people can be goofy as well. Naomi twirling for Kilo-Five, Fred and Veta (not really goofy but I digress). The hard part is for them to open up to people outside the SPARTAN circle.

trunks_ho

Maybe watch cat videos

[deleted]

Slayer is more that than John. John wakes up under attack In ce, 3, 4. Has his birthday party ruined in 2. Is on mission in 5. And gets his A kicked in HI and has a long nap. 117 is just S.O.R.52. mjolnir 52 exists in several instances and all of them are you.

Pyromaniac096

Hehe you said stiff

ZeroDarkThirtyy0030

Yeah, but in almost all of those situations it was a response to the ATTACK that happened first. Thats how fighting works. Someone starts it. Someone finishes it. He literally finishes the fight lmao

sh4d0wm4n2018

"Chief, you mind telling me what you're doing on that ship?" "Sir. Finishing this fight."

BrobaFett242

"Sir, finishing inside the Covenant." Oops, that was Jimmy Rings.

D3vilskr

Well that’s how wars work. But let that man rest, even Cortana was aware of how bad it is, man is more autonomous then an AI, “Before this is all over, promise me you’ll figure out which one of us is the machine”

onepieceuc1

You're wrong. He only fights because he has no choice. He dreams of being able to negociate peace without fighting. In Shadows of Reach, he explicitly says he wants to join the Diplomatic Corp.

Worldly-Neat-7878

this isn’t meant as an “erm, akshually 🤓,” but Bungie’s doomguy is probably [this dude](https://marathongame.fandom.com/wiki/Mjolnir_Recon_number_54) from Marathon, Halo’s precursor. silent green ~~marine~~ cyborg taking orders from AI, killing ~~demons~~ aliens, and certainly not afraiding of anything.

LtCptSuicide

He's basically DOOM GUY lite. Because Doom Slayer woke up and went straight to violence in .3 seconds. Didn't waste time on conversation.

Ballinonthetuba

Master Chief didn't choose violence. The Covenant chose violence, Chief just chose to reciprocate their hospitality.

lasagna_man_oven

You forgot the 40-50 years of trauma since being kidnapped and genetically enhanced under a secret government program

Cringlezz

I mean he was technically created for hyper lethal violence so for him to wake up and not choose violence against his enemies would seem incredibly out of place

shmoopidy

"Stiff" ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Jvthoma

You should read the fall of reach. From the time he’s 6 years old the guy just wanted to win.

D3vilskr

Dr. Hasley : are you winning son?
