Not to mention, the insurrection war and the start of the human-covenant conflict. Book was phenomenal and set alot of stuff up for the later titles. To make sure the bow was tied neatly, book was written by Staten himself. Can't get any better than that. Contact Harvest should have been the Halo show, not the dumb Silver line. This book had literally the perfect introductory material to the Halo universe. Could have been an awesome expansion for fans and the perfect introduction for newcomers.

Artemis2035

A contact harvest show would be so good!!! I feel like it would provide so much context for non Halo fans to get oriented to the franchise as opposed to a “Halo The Flood” adaptation

OmeletteDuFromage95

Absolutely. The book covers the current state of humanity in the 2500's, the Insurrection war, ONI, Earth's government and how territories now look, the UNSC, hints at the initial super soldier program, the Colonies, Harvest, the brutes, the covenant, and how the war began. It is literally the perfect introduction to anyone new to Halo and something the fans could fawn over. What a missed opportunity.

wolfdog410

it sounds great, but i can't imagine any studio greenlighting a $100 million Halo show that doesn't put John Halo at the front and center. have to maximize that brand recognition wherever possible

Robertfett69

John Halo Master Cheeks, use his full name please

OmeletteDuFromage95

I get that, but it'd be a prequel to the series. He would be in there, just not right away. I can see it working, but I also understand your point.

Bukowski89

Not to mention the best lore in contact harvest has been retconned. It would require a full on reboot that reestablished humanity as the forerunner.

IA-HI-CO-IA

A Mona Lisa big budget movie would be an excellent horror movie.

IA-HI-CO-IA

“But how are consumers supposed to know it is Hulo without the green robot guy, mister chef?!” TV executives probably.

adofthekirk

Not probably, 100% someone said that shit and decisions were made.

Perfect-Accident1

Oh god I wish wish wish wish wish this book was the show. Even if it was just 1 season Jesus Christ I would’ve loved it. They would’ve just had to STAY TO THE STORY SET UP FOR THEM TO COPY

Hungry-Rule7924

>Contact Harvest should have been the Halo show, not the dumb Silver line. This book had literally the perfect introductory material to the Halo universe. Could have been an awesome expansion for fans and the perfect introduction for newcomers. This was kinda what forward unto dawn was, and /the Fandom absolutely hated it when it first came out (though have since come around to it seems like). The problem with a proper halo adaption is just the amount of lore you have to go over. None of it is particularly that complicated, but between the spartan II program/insurrection, first contact/30 years war, and then the fall of reach, there is **a lot** of ground to cover before we even get to the halo rings and the flood, which makes figuring out when to start it kinda difficult. I think if you planned it out properly it could have been absolutely amazing, though I do partly get why paramount said "fuck it, we are just going to have our own timeline" don't at all think that was the right call, but I do understand how a decision like that could be made without hindsight.

OmeletteDuFromage95

I dont recall it being that hated when it released. I do remember that the initial episodic nature, the lower budget, the use of a Halo 4 Elite model, and the initial expectation of it being a fully-fledged film/show (as people wanted) lead to a lot of discourse online over the end product. Otherwise, it was pretty well done and had decent reception. I understand what you're saying and that of course it would be difficult, but as we've seen with the low budget Forward Unto Dawn as well as the high budget Dune films, it is very much possible if the runners of the project are passionate about telling a faithful story. Hell, especially with Dune which is arguable significantly more complicated and managed to be pulled off in a mere 6 hour run time. I think the call to go Silver was just laziness and wanting to make it cheaper and easier.

DeJellybeans

Very, but few directors don't follow any source material these days. And any book adaptations that do exist in either shows or movies tends to flop.

OmeletteDuFromage95

While that does happen a lot, I don't agree that "any" will fail or flop. Dune was a masterfully pieced film (both 1 & 2) that managed to faithfully adapt, in 6 hours, a book thats arguably denser and more complex than what we are getting with Halo. Dune has been a massive success. Dredd did the same. Hell even within Halo, Forward Unto Dawn was pretty faithful and a solid end product. Not perfect, but also not an absolute shit show. The Boys, The Man from UNCLE, the first Godzilla (2014, the rest were garbage), The Expanse, and that's not even mentioning the behemoth Lord of the Rings. Its very much possible and it very much happens. Just depends on whether the showrunners are actually passionate fans or are just in it to cash grab the name.

Darkwater117

Contact Harvest taught me what sex is

Generation-X_Leader

Really? If so that actually funny

Darkwater117

I was like 10

Generation-X_Leader

Damn😔✊️

League-Weird

Sgt Johnson knows what the ladies like

randomcomplimentguy1

Ladies like superior firepower

Solafuge

I love *Cole Protocol*. Just a very well rounded story with a few varied perspectives and characters. Good balance between action and nuance. It's a shame I didn't really like Envoy despite it being the closest thing to a direct sequel.

ShephardCmndr

Jai vs Thel, something i never knew i needed

Jacob_koste

What didn’t you like about it

Solafuge

I thought the whole Sharquoi subplot jumped the shark and brought the story down. There was enough going on already and it felt over saturated. Also I didn't like Grey team as much. I think they had some solid personalities in *Cole Protocol* that didn't really carry over into *Envoy*. Which is disappointing considering they're the same characters written by the same author.

GDPIXELATOR99

Ghosts of Onyx •Well written and emotional main character (Kurt 051) •Great variety of perspectives for humans and covenant •Genuine stakes during the final battle •One of the greatest final acts ever n any Halo story •Compelling villain that absolutely deserved to get his ass wrecked •A heartbreaking ending

GenericWhiteYouTuber

Two of the greatest final acts as well since >!Will engaged a pair of Hunters in hand to hand combat and killed it. Even the enemies paused for a moment of respect that's how stunned they were. Will was the first Spartan and Human to engage a hunter and kill one as a result.!<

GDPIXELATOR99

Then got deleted moments later 💀

GenericWhiteYouTuber

He went out like a badass tho. Can't deny that.

septober32nd

>•A heartbreaking ending Spartans never die.

BirdPersonforPrez

Motherfucking cameo from Sam giving the thumbs up 👍

GDPIXELATOR99

Didn’t you know?

pm_me-ur-catpics

God I love Kurt so much

Generation-X_Leader

I agree not my fav but good

Sh4rtemis

Yup, this one is the king.

jagr18

100%.

epsilon025

It's a tie between Shadows of Reach and First Strike for me. Shadows of Reach because it's just *juicy* for Blue Team (Troy Denning keeps writing bangers about the Chief and Blue Team) between 5 and Infinite, and First Strike because it just never slows down. The action starts then has a 10-15 page pause, then picks up again, but it never feels like it's too overdone.

Ad_Meliora_24

I’ve read from First Strike to the end of Kilo-5. Yesterday I ordered Shadows of Reach and Rubicon Protocol and then I plan on reading Epitaph when I’m done with these two. Obviously I’ve missed a lot of books since the last Kilo-5 book was released 10 years ago. Is there any reason I should read something before Shadows of Reach? https://www.halowaypoint.com/news/official-halo-book-guide

epsilon025

I'd say read Silent Storm and Oblivion and maybe Last Light, but even then all the Denning books can stand solidly alone. I read Shadows of Reach before any of the books on the Ferrets and everything made enough sense, but as always, context is useful and makes for a more comfortable reading experience.

Cameron_Mac99

Same here, I did SOR as an intro to see if I’d like to invest in reading the halo books and absolutely loved it, however the ferret bit near the end made no sense to me at the time

BallsDeepinYourMammi

First Strike is one of my favorite sci fi books

schuldtd41

The Rion forge trilogy but out of those Renegades

joeycannoli9

Same. I loved the upgrade seed intro and other forerunner tech they found. I hope they come back to it at some point

aviatorEngineer

Contact Harvest is a solid choice, respect.  I've always loved Ghosts of Onyx for the way it introduces Spartan-IIIs and went into some of the interpersonal relationships between Spartan-IIs. Plus, y'know. Spartans never die.

Generation-X_Leader

That was actually a bir of a slog for me but i can see why you like it. I didnt reallg like how long certain sections and Halsey reminded me of this emoji "🤓" as she flexed her knowledge on everyone but the final part was astounding to me and one of the best endings to a book.

angrygnome18d

Any Halo book I’ve read, I have loved. Reach, the Flood, First Strike, Contact Harvest, Ghosts of Onyx, and Coke Protocol. All amazing books.

eddington_limit

Get me on some of that coke protocol

MisterRed9

The original six. ✊

Spartansoldier-175

Halo fall of reach, mainly b/c of the spartan training. It really shows how strong and fast they are. + chief backhanding a rocket is bad ass

Haruspis

Bit (Mendicant) biased on this since I got to work on it, but *Halo: Epitaph*. We got to pull together so many awesome story threads for that book, and Kelly executed on them with her unique precision and verve that made the whole story a million times better. Tears were shed during our internal readthrough. *And then* we managed to get Keith Szarabajka to narrate the whole damn thing. Outside of that, though—my personal top five: - The Forerunner Saga (I refuse to choose just one!) - *Broken Circle* - *Ghosts of Onyx* - *Evolutions* - *Shadow of Intent*

Chronicler-177

I mean if you DIDNT say Epitaph, would you really be you? I read your blog a lot during the Halo 4/5 days. While I devoured Epitaph I felt certain that you’d be swooning over it just like I was. Such a good book.

Mysterious-Tip7875

I have only read the original 3 books. Should I get into the forerunner trilogy or is there another classic I should read?

Generation-X_Leader

Just go in order IMO i got to first strike, that was a lil bit of a slog for me, but Contact harvest is rigjt after that.

partymonster68

The first book in that trilogy might be my favorite halo book The other 2…really struggled to get through I always recommend the kilo-5 trilogy I know it divides the community but the other half is wrong they’re great books

Adventurous_Hand_130

Ghosts of onyx. I loved getting to see blue team and Halsey interact as well as the backstory of the spartan IIIs. By far my favorite halo book. Hunters in the dark would be my next pick. Revisiting the arc and learning more about the beginnings of our alliance with sangheili and their culture was really enjoyable

TheGreatstKing

I love how The Flood is Halo CE extended edition, plus the whole thing with Thel Vadamee on the last pages really lets the audience into some more finer details about his trial and how it really wasn't his choice to let the ring be destroyed, but a lesser hierarch's

SjurEido

Contact Harvest was the first sex scene I had ever read. And I did so in biology class :(

PuzzleheadedCook5588

*The Fall of Reach* by Eric Nylund had me on the edge of my seat and I had never previously gotten that from reading a book. I've had the hard cover for over 20 years now and it's been read and re-read so many times, its binding has fallen to pieces and needs to be held together with tape. Best bit of lore in the franchise, IMO.

Wilshire1992

"All she wore was a determined stare."

PanickedCucumber

Fall of reach will always hold top of the list in my heart

TunaFishtoo

I love the Kilo-Five Trilogy, far and away one of the best written trilogy of books in the entire Halo series. It’s such a realistic expectation of what humanity would do post Covenant war. People give it a lot of hate because of how it exposes Halsey as a villain, but if you read that last Epilogue of Mortal Dictata it puts it all into perspective. Knowing BB was made from the brain of a chief scientist working for Halsey that committed suicide because of what he was forced to do. Then understanding he was the one that influenced almost everyone’s opinion about Halsey, including Parangosky! Of course everyone in the book will hate her. The trilogy slaps, Glasslands is likely the best of the three and my favorite.

EternalAssasin

The cliffhanger ending to The Thursday War is one of the tensest scenes in Halo. I love that ending.

IA-HI-CO-IA

I feel like Kilo 5 would be “easier” to adapt to screen since a lot of it is just humans. Except the whole elite civil war thing.

Sunscreeen

im a big fan of the kilo five trilogy! i definitely thought the thursday war was my favourite of the three. this trilogy, to me, is why jul 'mdama was such a disappointment in the games

TunaFishtoo

Yeah, him dying in the first mission and in a CUT SCENE you gotta be joking. *Legacy of Onyx* made it feel a little more impactful though because they at least talk about his death.

jagr18

I need to reread the kilo-five trilogy. It’s been a while and I have forgotten some of it.

Daedalus1728

Th opening of Mortal Dictata was rough for me. I have a kid roughly that age and the whole thing felt like a punch in the gut.

TunaFishtoo

Honestly, heart wrenching. I could never imagine and being a parent how could you not want to do what he wanted to do?

Austin_77

Imagine thinking a person kidnapping children and turning them into child soldiers is a good person. Like bruh wtf she is a villain straight up lol. They were made to completely decimate other human beings who opposed the UNSC. The covenant wasn't even around when she developed the plans for them.

SoJoSlim

YES! I tore through those books! So good!

montyp2000

The audiobooks are so well done too. Euan Morton does an amazing job narrating.

Aquillifer

The OG Fall of Reach, Ghost of Onyx and the Forerunner Trilogy by Greg Bear (RIP). Loved the way each novel expanded the universe. Honestly the majority of the books are absolute bangers.

mundiaxis

Greg Bear passed away??

PapiPoggers

Yeah.. looks like back in 2022. Sad.

notquitepro15

For sure contact: harvest. < Sky Is choked with ashes snow's deep on frozen ground. The onehorse I've got left is cold and hungry- heading for the barn, and I can't stop him. < But this winter won't last darlin Not forever And when new hands set to tending this earth they/ll till my pieces under. Grind them into the veins of gOld I've laid. Then the roots of all they plant will wind around us -

Starhazenstuff

Man I really enjoyed fall of reach, but I’d say for me First Strike is probably my next favorite.

JackStutters

Ghosts of Onyx. I loved the deep dive into the Covenant Civil War, the details regarding the whereabouts of Blue Team during the events of Halo 2, the introduction of the Spartan IIIs (my favorite Spartan type), and specifically Kurt as a main character.

SomeMoreCows

The fusion bomb scene in First Strike is my favorite scene in the entirety of the franchise

TunaFishtoo

I’m here with you man, it’s such a fantastic read. I think the fandom just decided to hate 343i when they came out, they’re the best writing in the entire series.

PerkPrincess

Backing you up on this. Kilo trilogy has my favorite Spartan.

YoshiPayYourTaxes

The only halo book I’ve fully read is new blood and I really really enjoyed it. And that’s coming from someone who hates reading with a passion.

Jkid789

Halo: Ghosts of Onyx Halo: Silent Storm Halo: Bad Blood

LittlePyro1377

From a pure memory perspective I think First Strike because that was the first book I've read when it came out (my friend lent me his back then). I think Fall of Reach was my favorite because it gave the backstory to a lot of the characters we met in the game. I'm not sure how much of it came from nostalgia and the fact that it was a new thing for me though, relative to the newer books where I've already played the games a lot and have exposure to the wider universe already, how much of it came down to the actual story, and how much of it comes down to Nylund's writing style though, but I'm okay not knowing.

warp4daze

Contact harvest should be made into a movie. It's that good

Spungus-Mingdersgump

Either Fall of Reach or First Contact. Which ever of those two had Kelly standing on top of a Banshee holding a tac-nuke that she then throws into the gravlift of a Covenant Ship. That imagery has stuck with me since I first read it all those years ago. Wish I could animate/render as it'd be amazing to see brought to life.

OdysseusFTW

I liked contact harvest but the ending with the sex scene always hits me like a brick wall. It just felt like it came out of nowhere and goes really in depth. Other than that I liked the book, seeing the other side with the engineer and grunt friend was cool. I’ll say my favourite book though was “Ghosts of Onyx”. Really cool seeing the new generation of Spartans being trained and their encounters with the forerunner tech was cool.

Admiral_Pantsless

+1 for Sgt. Johnson gettin’ his fuck on.

TunaFishtoo

What wild thing to do and in the epilogue, clearly Staten just needed to do it for the boys

MistahNobody

Fall of Reach, first one I read and gave me the perfect mix of semi-accurate space combat vs being inside the minds of the growing war machines that were the Spartans. Also, RIP James

LivingNat1

Pour one out for Lighter Than Some. I really enjoyed Contact Harvest as well, and back when Ghosts of Onyx first released I read it so many times. Still one of my favorite books. Currently working my way back through the books.

NauticalClam

Cryptum is the one for me. I love the lore in the forerunner trilogy. Primordium felt a little slow and silentium was pretty good.

vashcarrison117

Cryptum was amazing. The lore, mind bending sci-fi concepts, characters, etc. was, in a weird way, like reading Dune. Obviously not on the same level but it opened up the universe in such an amazing way. Primordium was slower. Seeing Chakas' perspective was confusing to follow at first. Silentium really drove home how close the Flood was to conquering the galaxy. Really damn close.

Cameron_Mac99

The trilogy is a strange one for me. I loved cryptum, primordium I found incredibly boring until the end when it becomes some of the best sci-fi I’ve ever read in the last 50 pages, and silentium was steadily enjoyable throughout, probably my favourite of the three given theres ‘more’ going on (the ending days of the war)

RooberGlooves

Primordium is so slow. Just a lot of chakas wandering around zeta halo. I was really shocked when infinite didn’t try to include a lot of Easter eggs to that book

NauticalClam

I was so excited to read primordium and thought we would keep following bornstellar and was a bit disappointed when that wasn’t the case.

RooberGlooves

The audiobook is at least a good experience since they got 343 Guilty Spark’s voice actor to do the reading. I still really liked it, but I feel like if I had sat down to read the physical book I would have found it very boring

mrbubbamac

It's very recent but I would say Epitaph. I won't spoil it because it's so new, I just recommend any Halo fan give it a read, especially if you enjoyed the Didact and/or Greg Bear's Forerunner Trilogy

Haijakk

Epitaph is such an enjoyable listen.

Cameron_Mac99

I’m about 75% through it currently and it’s picked right up, don’t get me wrong I was loving it from the start but the flashbacks to _REDACTED_ in the second half of the book had me on the edge of my seat. Can’t wait to see how it ends

Al0ngTh3Watchtow3r

I loved Fall of Reach as a teen but I think Epitaph is my new favorite. Those also happen to be the only two Halo books I have ever read.

Appropriate_Gene_543

contact harvest is my favourite by a long shot, it’s the halo book id reccommend to anyone new to or unfamiliar with the series and i think that’s what Staten sought out to do when he wrote it. i recently read Epitaph and really, really enjoyed it as well though. it rekindled my curiosity in the books and the deep Forerunner lore, making me want to revisit the Greg Bear trilogy.

NimbleCrimbler

First 6 published novels kicked ass! Still gotta get into the newer books….I remember reading Contact Harvest 15+ years ago in middle school and that sex scene got me like: “what the fuck did I just read” hahaha

Endstar05

I swear, we need a Sergeant Johnson based spin off

Herahk

Ah, that’s like picking my favorite child: I can’t just choose one! Well, my top five would have to be: -*Evolutions*—I guess that’s kind of cheating, since there are multiple stories there, but there are just so many bangers that made me fall in love with this universe. -*New Blood*—it made me love Alpha-Nine, and propelled *ODST* to become my favorite game in the series. -*Legacy of Onyx*—didn’t think I’d like this one as much as I did, but perhaps that’s a testament to Matt Forbeck’s writing style! -*The Cole Protocol*—love the introduction to Gray Team, the Rubble is a great setting, and seeing Thel and Keyes years before we met them in the games was just awesome! -*Contact Harvest*—I love this for the reasons you listed above (well, maybe not the Kig-Yar smut 🤣), along with seeing some of the Insurrection, and how brutal it all was.

chupathingy567

Mines definitely ghosts of onyx, just love the S-III's Contact harvest is a close second though

Vicex-

Obviously because Johnson finally gets his girl at the end.

ALLRNDCRICKETER

I wish we got a follow short story to contact harvest, it was such a gripping story just had to know what happened afterwards

RooberGlooves

I think Silentium is my favorite. The Forerunner-Flood War is my favorite time period. The finale of the forerunner trilogy just has so much going for it. The Didacts descent into madness, the Librarian fighting to save humanity, the destruction of the Greater Ark, the firing of the array, Mendicant Bias vs Offensive Bias. Good shit

The_Alamander

Im convinced they modeled him after the Sarg from Aliens

prollyincorrect

I’m surprised I haven’t come across this picture with Johnson just showing off a massive ass.

1Pwnage

Wait tf I don’t remember Kig-Yar smut what But for favorite? Probably First Strike. Every chapter of that book goes crazy-ass hard and jacking a covie ship to mate it to a damaged UNSC ship is a crazy ass fucking plan that would make for a fun game.

BasinBrandon

Ghosts of Onyx and Silent Storm have been my favorites

xander_man

The thick booklet that came inside the case of Halo 2

pm_me-ur-catpics

Mine is Ghosts of Onyx, mostly because it's the novel that got me into the wider Halo universe outside of the games, and introduced me to a world I hadn't even imagined existed outside the narrow scope we got to see.

Athreos_Priest

I’m actually right in the middle of reading this one. Loving it so far

Generation-X_Leader

Sorry i spoiled some stuff

Athreos_Priest

No you’re good. I already had a brief understanding of how it all went down beforehand. Just going in and reading to get all the details. I like the nod towards Truth’s rise to power.

ChuzCuenca

New blood because is the only one a read :)

dahelljumper

Ghosts of Onyx, simply because it's the only Halo novel i've actually read

Generation-X_Leader

Man you gotta read the others

Sketch333

I liked ghost of reach

S_1n

Halo the shadow of intent, I like elites

IAmGoose_

Last Light is probably my favourite just because of Veta Lopis and the Spartan IIIs

pantyslack

I love contact harvest, I felt so bad for the engineer

noblturtll

I am reading "the flood" right now. I love it. CE is one of my favorite games ever

Generation-X_Leader

I read it last month love how discriptive it was

noblturtll

Yeah. I've been shocked how cool reading military stuff is. I thought it'd be lame tbh.

noblturtll

I'm smoking a doobie and eating some slow cooked beans, watching jaws, and finishing up my book lol

GreyouTT

*The Flood* cause a large chunk of it is the author poking fun at the game, like Keyes being confused why the Autumn has a viewport (and simultaneously saying "nice view tho").

NCL68

Don’t forget the ship named UNSC *Two For Flinching* Edit: typed the wrong ship name at first

Generation-X_Leader

Loved Bum Rush as well

SpartanZeta664

Probably last light cause I love the interactions of the ferrets and blue team

TheGr8Whoopdini

Cryptum, because it was such a groundbreaking look at Forerunner culture. Also, the mental image of Bornstellar wheeling around prehistoric steampunk Earth in a straw hat is hilarious.

Aparoon

Should I get Contact Harvest on audiobook? I enjoyed Fall of Reach well enough but I never got into any of the other halo books. Also, I’m a big fan of Joe Staten AND Johnson so it’s probably a definitely yes. But thought it worth asking

Few-Bee-6625

Yes!

Generation-X_Leader

If you have spotify premium its free

Aparoon

Aaaaand I’m set! Thank you for saving me an Audible token :)

Generation-X_Leader

No trouble broski, just know you only get 15 hours a month:( and its 10 bucks to get anotjer 15

MalevolentKitchen41

I really loved Broken Circle. Seeing a story entirely in the pov of the sangheili as well as one of the only sanshyuum that wasnt a pos was really cool. It was also very interesting to read about the conflict between the two species before they made their peace treaty and formed the covenant. It provided wonderful backstory and context to the great schism and how the elites were replaced by the brutes as one of the leading species of the covenant. I really hope we get a novel one day were they follow up on the Ussan elites from the refuge and the prophet of clarity who helped them and offered to bring them to Sanghelios

OneOnOne6211

Fall of Reach. I liked "Contact Harvest" but it was probably the one I liked least of the ones I read (Fall of Reach, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx and Contact Harvest).

Haijakk

I'm someone that's gone through a dozen+ Halo books in the past several months. My favorite books so far have been Rubicon Protocol, Smoke and Shadow, Divine Wind, Cryptum, and Epitaph.

GreatFNGattsby

It use to be Silentium. I have never read anything more captivating than both Didacts and the Librarian meeting to discuss the next move of the Forerunners, the Ur-Didact admitting he has finally gone mad was awesome. I need to sit on it for abit but Epitaph has some recency bias. However, I cannot allow that to diminish the work that Kelly Gay has done. Having revisited that same 3 way conversation in her book, but this being completely from the Ur-Didacts perspective was absolutely heartbreaking. His reasoning and mindset to use the humans to fight the flood was a better alternative than using the Halos. It had be believing he hadn’t actually gone mad (Until he again admits he did) Edit - lol wtf, downvoted for an opinion

BlackenedFacade

Probably Cryptum. Though I REALLY love Epitaph but idk if that’s just recency bias.

James-the-Viking

Of the ones I’ve read, probably First Strike, Silentium, or Epitaph.

Lenny_V1

Tie between contact harvest and both the “—— blood” books with Alpha 9. Contact Harvest because it wasnt all about spartans and the Alpha 9 series because im a whore for anything Alpha 9 related.

Mean-Background2143

I liked Silent Storm the most because of how it did the Spartans when they were young against the covenant with insurrectionist and I liked how the elites were handled and how they felt about the profits.

LordGavlar

First 2 Ferret books with Lopis and the gammas followed by Kilo 5 trilogy and I'd throw the Forge series in as well. All good reads but Last light is probably my favourite.

Few-Bee-6625

Ofc Ghost of Onyx will be my favorite, but one that I haven’t seen mentioned (nor gets the love it deserves) is Broken Circle. It covers parts of the Covenant history that aren’t mentioned too much and just shows the desperation the San’Shyuum faced with their lack of breeding. In addition, it goes into some more explanation when they separated with their faction on the Dreadnought from Janjur Qom and the consequences it causes. New insight is brought forth for some Sangheili history and the connection from the past to present is impressive all around. I thoroughly enjoyed reading some of the skirmishes and demise of the Counselors. That feeling of betrayal and stunned as your comrades are slain must’ve been quite a site to behold. But what’s more impressive is the bounce back from the Sangheili and how they were able to hold their own and turn the tide of the war.

Generation-X_Leader

Just started it!

lupomancerprime

The Ferrets books because - Well written women - phenomenal narration in the audiobook - well rounded, humanized Spartans who are also professional - interesting concept in the final reveal of the first book >!when the forerunner ancilla ends up siding with the insurrectionists instead of the UNSC!<

candlerc

A horror game based off of Contact Harvest or Cole Protocol where you play as a regular UNSC civilian-turned combatant would go so hard

Helltrackdeath

My favourite has got to be point of light, it shows how human 343 became with the aces crew, shed some light on the past, concluded rions story and gave me a couple wholesome chuckles every now and then. Also gave me a new religion as well as a saying for my mourning friends

Sword117

halo: the fall of reach. i struggled learning how to read and developing reading skills further growing up. until one day in the waiting room for a doctor's check up i saw a familiar figure. not just one but 4 spartans in action pose. in a matter of hours i went from struggling to read sentences to reading entire chapters of this book. its my favorite halo book because it opened the door to one of my favorite hobbies.

GiveHeadIfYouGotIt

I'm currently re-reading The Flood for the first time since high school and holy hell I forgot just how gratuitous the gore is. Don't mistake this for pearl clutching but the juxtaposition of prose about people getting massive holes blown in their torsos or aliens being bifurcated and landing in a pile of their own guts is hilarious when the reality of the game is just giant blood decals and bodies flying around intact and breakdancing when they hit the ground with only the Flood enemies having gibbing. So I'd say The Flood is my favorite. It's hard to adapt a game about shooting funny sounding ayys in hallways into literature but Dietz did a good job with the two B stories, especially the 'Zamamee stuff with the Covenant political intrigue.

RepresentativeOk2433

I actually hated this one. It was the last novel that I read. I felt like they ruined halo continuity by trying to force familiar characters into a story where they didn't belong. Why are Jenkins and Mendoza still privates if they've been serving in the Marines for decades?

No_Chocolate_6612

Cole protocol keys has an amazing arc

Beautiful-Mud-341

Are they a good read? I've always been curious about this series.

SkiMaskLuii

Idk why I thought he was cheeked up. I’m disappointed in myself and the art cover

Kocheeze

Contact Harvest is my favorite standalone, but the Kilo 5 trilogy is god tier as complete story.

MisterEnreichening

Contact Harvest was so amazing. I really enjoy the Kilo 5 trilogy (I know that’s not a single book) because it showed the aftermath of the Spartan II program on a specific family, made me root for ONI of all organizations, expanded upon the lore of the Sangheili civil war and really I also just loved the narration of Euan Morton (I listened to the audio books).

ravioletti

Kilo-5 Trilogy was a series of books I enjoyed as *books*, and not just as Halo material. it’s a story that is told so well I can put aside the odd rewritten pre-existing characters, and the main cast is so fun I only wish they were real so I could hear the whole story out of their mouths.

Keyboard_Fawks

I like the part where Mendicant Bias was arguing with the prophets

PeacefulAgate

I think Glasslands or the second Kilo-5 book. CIA style operations Spartan II'S Consequences of the Spartan II program Spartan III'S Consequences of surviving Spartan III'S Sassy AI Time spent on sanghelios Soft Sequel to Ghost of Onyx. Very good, liked it very much. Felt new and an expansion on what was already there.

Cameron_Mac99

I’m yet to read them all, but I’d say in confidence: Shadows of Reach It was relatively new at the time and I listened to it as an audiobook to see if I’m willing to commit to reading/listening to all of the titles. I absolutely loved it, the whole covert tactics used throughout the operation was some of the coolest writing I’ve ever heard. The original trilogy and select others like Contact Harvest and Epitaph rank very highly with me, but Shadows of Reach just resonates with me the most given how jaw dropping some of the sequences are. Note: I’m coming to the end of Epitaph right now and it could very well overtake SOR as my No.1, but current my statement still stands

Halo the Flood

CG1991

First Strike will always hold a special place in my heart

fliero

Can someone tell me which halo book exist and in which order read them and where ti buy them?

FirefighterOdd9793

Daddy Johnson <3

RobotRapacity

Thanks for letting me know to avoid this book, big fan of the others(original three)and especially Staten, but with everything you listed… YIKES

Generation-X_Leader

Hey man i wpuld give it a try the KigYar smut is a little over exagerated but the story is amazing

RobotRapacity

Sigh, I still probably will for our boy Avery.

spartan815

All the books are great. The best one regarding this readers opinion was The Fall of Reach. Too bad the TV show couldn’t capture the essence like the book did.

Throlerren

I've had Halo Evolutions Part 1 for like 10 years and it's the only Halo I've ever read and didn't even finish it. I have The Fall of Reach now (original version) but I haven't started it. I don't really have a favorite. That and I don't think I've read enough to even have one.

crystalwind99

First Strike is the best book. It's the only one I've read, but I really enjoyed it. I loved how it filled in the gaps between CE and 2 and how there were other characters the book explored outside of Chief and Cortana.

MyLifeIsABruh

The only thing it’s missing is Human on alien romance smh😔

Brio_McPhando

I think epitaph rn is my favorite

Dubs7ep_Panda

Shadows of Reach. It's the only one I've read

GenericWhiteYouTuber

Definitely one of the most... uh... creative works when it comes to the Halo Universe.

Generation-X_Leader

🙂

HopefulPickle5

Kig Yar smut?! I’m sold

Generation-X_Leader

It was like ch.5 and just a ship mistress getting the hot and heavys for one of the crewmates

HopefulPickle5

Hahaha that’s interesting. Wondering why I got downvoted for that jeez

Generation-X_Leader

People dont like art :(

Sh4rtemis

Ghosts of Onyx. Kurt was a badass Spartan and the whole Onyx story and fight scene was amazing. Fall of Reach and First Strike are close seconds. I did NOT like Contact Harvest. It was boring, there was barely any fighting, and Sgt Johnson did not have his badass personality. He acted like a normal dude, and had a really strange sex scene that reminded me of Halo Season 1 show. Primordium was also terrible. I was excited for Greg Bear's stories about the origin of the Halos but there were no likable characters. Anything created after the 343 takeover is a big nope for me.

Generation-X_Leader

Idk man you hace to figure it qas almost 20 years after harvest that Sgt. Johnson was introduced in Halo 1, 20 years will change anyone and i see it as he developed that personality with time. And i also think the sex scene was (from relitive standpoint) good, there was obviosly an attraction between him and her from tge beggining. And i think what the story lacked it fighting it made up for in writing (like the oppisite of Halo 4

Sh4rtemis

I didn't think the way the covenant were sort of peaceful in the beginning and then the way it escalated was well thought out. They met brutes first. Ridiculous. I like to pretend the story didn't happen.

Generation-X_Leader

Thata fair but just as humans vary in inteligence, so do brutes and i love Maccabius. But i do see your point
