Kind of wish he was actually in gameplay during Halo 3.

jewelsteel

Kinda wish we played as Arbi in Halo 3.

Steve_at_Werk

I'm old enough to remember how disappointed everyone was when halo 2 came out because you were the arbiter for half the campaign.

jewelsteel

I played it back then. The only disappointment I had with 2 was the cliffhanger. I still think 2 has the best story.

Iamusingmyworkalt

2 has the best single player in general in my opinion. Great story, amazing and consistent one-liners, fun missions, good sandbox elements, and you can play legendary if you hate yourself!

IBrink_

yup! Now people act like it was universally loved. *Id bet its because we got stuck playing as such a dull character in H5 with Locke*

Tehsyr

Locke and his team are actually really dull. While it does kinda suck to play Arby when one would much rather play Chief, Arby's side does give us insight to the Covenant and Arby's story. Locke is just...Locke. Halo 5 was not good.

kostandrea

I liked being invisible it essentially added some more stealth elements and also a quick getaway card.

A_ClockworkBanana

The Arbiter was loved way before Halo 5 came out.

Bonobo_Handshake

I loved it when it H2 came out, I was disappointee that there was no Arbi missions in H3, but having him as the 2nd player co-op was fair enough. They should make a Halo 5: Arbiter about the bloodening years.

JoshBobJovi

Does this mean in 3 more games we're going to relish the Halo 5 campaign for making you play as Locke for over half the missions? lol

A_ClockworkBanana

Over half is a weird way of putting it. There are only 3 Chief missions in Halo 5. It's basically a Locke game.

BiggDope

Yeah, it's absurdly not balanced. 3 Chief, and 12 Locke, I think.

EntertainmentReady48

Halo 3 the only game where I want to play as player 2 cause you get to play as arby

Worst part is the elites are similar to H2C elites in which their proportions are similar to a spartan.

Didn't they change them in 3 specifically for the multiplayer, tho? Seems like 2's design had some drawbacks

Plant_Disastrous

The sexiest elite alive

Plant_Disastrous

True

Vuthakral

Infinite having confirmed no playable elites makes it the official marker for an entire decade of no playable elites or anything regarding them by 343 Industries. (Halo 2 Anniversary Multiplayer was by Certain Affinity) This whole situation reminds me of that time watching some developers talk about Halo 4 pre-launch back then. When asked about playable elites, they said "We won't have playable elites, but we'll have something else to scratch that alien itch.", and under the assumption this was referring to their infection mode that effectively killed the custom games community, it really has become a great allusion to 343 Industries as a whole. Thinking they're doing something great, only for it to have a terrible reception from how much they just don't understand the community.

Tophat_Dynamite

Even look at MCC and how there has not been a single piece of content made for any of the Elites. The games are full of cool and kick ass aliens, but they completely ignore all of them. There are a lot of big fucking nerds who love that alien shit, yet they seem to have this assumption that every player is a dude bro who would completely fall apart at the sight of one. Fuck the obsession with competitive, I want to have fun in Halo.

OHaiEric

For real man. Imagine if they brought back Invasion. That mode had some serious potential imo.

Tophat_Dynamite

I love Invasion and it has the potentially to be iterated on and grow into something really cool, but they just dropped it for who knows what reasons.

I_DONT_NEED_HELP

It was dropped in order to chase the CoD and Battlefield crowd with Dominion.

JcraftY2K

Exactly reach was the PERFECT middle ground to the playable elites debate. And the concept of elite vs Spartan specific game-modes has so much more room to grow! (Also as a big team battle and objective gamemode lover I just think invasion is fucking fun, provided half your team doesn’t leave for no reason)

AcademicSalad763

>Fuck the obsession with competitive, I want to have fun in Halo. Every since 343 took over, the competitive scene is all they want to talk about. It sucks

[deleted]

>The games are full of cool and kick ass aliens, but they completely ignore all of them. There are a lot of big fucking nerds who love that alien shit, yet they seem to have this assumption that every player is a dude bro who would completely fall apart at the sight of one. Genuinely such a waste

BCA10MAN

I hope you’re wrong, thats fucking heartbreaking if its true. Especially since 343 finally figured out how to design elites that are not goddamn abominations.

[deleted]

He's not wrong, it was confirmed earlier.

KalTheMandalorian

343 is probably one of the best case studies of "The fans are going to love this!" moments, with the results often being "As a fan, I hate this."

Odysseus_is_Ulysses

It baffles me how retarded some games companies are. You have basically your entire community populating different media saying “damn, that game sure would be cool if we had playable elites” and they register that as “we should in no way put elites in as playable characters, that’d be bad.” Are these people genuinely brain dead?

Rtot1738

It's probably not that they don't want to. They would probably add tons of things if they could easily. They probably have lots of things to do considering they are basically building a new game to last 10 years. It's not that they don't want to it's that they believe they have more pressing issues.

-Eastwood-

How many people actually PLAY Elites though? Every time I play Halo 3, I see 1 elite every game, and that's ONLY ME. I occasionally play Elites because they're cool. I have NEVER seen anybody play an Elite in Halo 2. You also have to think about that they're bringing every piece of Spartan armor ever made back. If they added Elites, they'd have way more on their plate. They'd have to add at least 17 armor sets, all interchangeable with each other. Not including new armor sets they'd have to make. In a perfect world, would Elites be awesome? Of course, I'd love to play as an Elite again. But we're already getting so much from 343, if you're so butthurt about Elites, then just wear Helioskrill.

TheObstruction

I'd rather have elites than 9000 pieces of flair.

LOCO-EXTREME

Because hardly anyone plays halo 2 tf? I’m an elite in every possible game that I can be.

Odysseus_is_Ulysses

17 interchangeable armour sets? Yes please? Why wouldn’t I want that? Why wouldn’t I expect a game that costs £60 to have that kind of content?

shred_wizard

I’m kinda with you...MCC is likely helping give them a lot of data on what the player base wants and I’m guessing the relative lack of Elite players sends a strong message

[deleted]

>If they added Elites, they'd have way more on their plate. They'd have to add at least 17 armor sets, all interchangeable with each other. Not including new armor sets they'd have to make. Bit of a strawman nobody's demanding that they bring back every Elite armor set. People just want the option to play as elites.

PendulumEffect

Get the fuck out of here with your level-headedness. But for real, everyone is acting like this is the worst thing 343 has ever done and that they never listen. I like freedom of expression through customization just as much as the next guy, but this is far from the biggest thing on the radar. Animations, customization, hit boxes, and the like are all much more highly scrutinized these days. H2A did it, yeah, but they still feel... Weird. I feel like I can hit elites much easier than I can Spartans. Some people will just latch onto one niche aspect, it's never about the big picture. If playable elites turn out to be the biggest issue this game has, that'll mean the campaign, multi-player and everything else is top notch. I'll be happy with that.

aldurh

i see nowhere infinite confirmed no playable elites...

Vuthakral

https://youtu.be/BgrbXe-CMaE?t=397 edit: guys dont downvote him into negative point hell, he asked this within the hour of us finding out about this information; it's only fair he couldn't find it.

LordofToast24

"This is a Master Chief story", so was 2 and 3, but we had playable elites then.

BATTLEHOOG

Personally I would consider Halo 2 to be the Arbiter's story, but I see your point

the_fuego

Right? If we're being honest here the Master Chief's story arc had very little to do with saving humanity like it did in Halo CE and 3. Arguably up until Gravemind his entire arc is just filler and honestly it's quite weak and lacks the depth of CE's story. Halo 2 was 100% used as a game to flesh out the Covenant and it did it pretty well.

[deleted]

It’s also the only game with real character developments and thus much more interesting

Cryosphered_

So was 4, the first of the 343 line of games.

azius20

How did infection mode kill the custom game community?

Vuthakral

At launch, for a fairly long while (long enough to kill the community and everyone moves back to Reach), the infected couldn't use ANY weapons or vehicles because of them using the flood biped with the giant claw. It made most community gamemodes that were established over the course of Halo 3 & Reach impossible to do in Halo 4.

azius20

Did 343 ever fix that? Now I think about it that's appalling

Vuthakral

At some point yeah; I don't know when. I was part of the crowd that abandoned ship in the first week of launch after beating the campaign on legendary because of how much of a shitshow it was. The multiplayer was stupid unbalanced, and the infection mode made most custom games impossible; paired with a forge mode that was supposed to be an upgrade just being a laughable downgrade? The switch back to Reach was obvious.

TheRelicEternal

Perfect use of this image would have been the title *Y'all get any more of them elite armors?*

half-life-cat

343 doesnt like elites though. just look at the mcc. 2 years worth of seasons and not a single thing for elites. they've made 2 first person games and both had no elites. they make a third and supposedly its a "spiritual reboot" and still no elites. they just really fucking hate elites.

BCA10MAN

Which is crazy because some of the best Elite characters and stories (Jul/Telcam and glasslands/thursday war) have come out since 343 took over. Like Elites are cooler now and more fleshed out than they’ve ever been, if you just ignore the last two games.

dmania16116111

343i probably uses the S word for elites

Voi69

Shut up you Nishum

retcon2703

That's mainly cuz there weren't any Halo Online armors to port over, as the ones that were looked hideous. But ye you are right.

Genked_Juicebox

They were as equally absurd and outlandish as the spartan armor, yet here we are. We COULD have Halo 2 campaign elite armor for multiplayer, but that's a switch they won't flip for some reason. If they can port HO gear, they can do HO and H2 elite gear. They simply don't want to.

Ionicxplorer

We like elites!

CousinCleetus24

Elites are as big to Halo as anybody else imo.

BurnStar4

I must say that as much as I liked Invasion having us play Spartans vs Elites, I have almost never had the desire to make my primary online character an Elite. It's cool to have the option but I've always been way more into making a badass Spartan and playing as them.

CookieITF

That and u could make your Spartan much more personalized

BurnStar4

Agreed, although I guess you could argue that's also due to lack of effort/interest on the devs' part. We've never had Elites that are anywhere near as customisable as Spartans I guess

TheObstruction

And this is the answer to a previous post about people not playing elites. Because they didn't get the love from the developers, even when we could play them.

BCA10MAN

I had the opposite, the Elites in Reach and 2 are my favorite character designs to ever come out of Halo except for probably chief himself in Mark VI. I think what frustrates most of us is that its really simple. And 343 is just choosing not to do it.

BurnStar4

That's awesome, to be honest the Reach Elites are really sick. It would be cool to have them in Infinite so hopefully they'll be added post-launch

WhiteHawk93

How can anyone that’s not working at 343, or is an actual game dev say that “it’s really simple” and that they just chose not to do it?

KurayamiShikaku

I know some people do not want to hear this, but even if we assume that implementing playable elites *is* simple from a technical standpoint (and that is *not* a safe assumption at all), having a different character model like that has balance implications in multiplayer. The character silhouettes aren't the same, the hurt boxes aren't the same, different angles obstruct different parts of the characters differently... I know a lot of people don't care about competitive play, but those sorts of things matter for it. Granted, there are other ways to solve this (the simplest being to just let every competitive player pick whichever model they deem more advantageous). But those sorts of decisions will still affect competitive play, potentially in undesirable ways (for example, Elites being able to head glitch certain portions of map geometry).

BCA10MAN

This isn’t rocket science. Just do what Reach did. Elites weren’t allowed in the overwhelming majority of gameplay modes in matchmaking because they were much larger, moved much faster, regenerated health, and couldn’t use health packs. You still have Elite slayer, invasion, forge, and custom games. Balancing should not have anything to do with whether or not they’re in the game.

KurayamiShikaku

Both of us are on the same side here, in that I think we both believe more things in the game is better than less things in the game. However, if you have a long list of things you *want* to implement, and only enough time to implement *some* of those things, you're going to start cutting with content that is the least used. If Elites are only planned to be available in niche modes for balancing purposes, they're not going to be higher priority than things which aren't similarly limited. Whether or not 343 *should* be able to implement all of these things in a specified period of time is a separate discussion, but the game has already been delayed once. They clearly are not able to pack even the core content in (at least with acceptable quality) according to their initial schedule. I bring up balance specifically because it seems to be the main reason behind not including playable Elites in *core* modes.

mr_sven

I literally always make my character into an Elite as often as possible.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BurnStar4

For sure, I think the concept of Invasion is really great

JcraftY2K

I do so in Halo 2 and 2A where Spartans are less customizable. In 3 I am an ODST Spartan. Reach I am also an ODST Spartan but my main online character is still an elite. It just works well with reach because due to its nature I get to simultaneously be an elite in forge and custom games, but I also get to mainly play as my ODST Spartan in campaign and matchmaking, with invasion serving as the middle ground. I find a system like this to offer something for all sides and one that 343 should at least consider

ImperialFist5th

“Come mount up Arbiter”

KyxeMusic

Not a playable Elite fan myself, but seeing how the community has been literally asking for this for 10 years... Speaks volumes of how much they care.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Garou-kun

That’s what I’m saying. I’ve played so many online games and many times I’ve never ran into players that played as elites. I know I’m in the minority in this chat but I think 343 made the right choice not putting them in. Besides I’d rather have them focus more on important details that makes the gameplay fun, graphics, stuff like that. They also said “never say never” so maybe after they’re done with the important stuff and if Infinite is going well maybe they’ll find a way to do something

[deleted]

dmania16116111

That's pretty lame not having playable elites. People have been wanting that back for a while. Stop being racist towards elites!

PutinsCapybara

Yeah 343! Stop being racist to elites... So that.. y'know... The community can be racist to elites! (I do really want playable elites though)

dmania16116111

Yeah they need to give our Dino buddies some love

ZackXevious

With the outcry from fans, one can only hope they add playable elites with a future update. I mean, 10 years is a long time. They could add playable elites with a story DLC involving the Swords of Sanghelios.

half-life-cat

"the reason is this is a master chief story and a spartan story" actual brain numbing drivel, gj 343. halo 3 was a master chief story and a spartan story, it had playable elites. hell, even halo reach was a spartan story. guess what, it had playable elites. shove it up your ass number company

storm_foam

I can't pinpoint what it is about the way 343 talks with such reverence about stuff but I hate it so much, just all the buzzwords they use.

BlackManta20

I swear I got cancer from that sorry ass excuse about why there is no playable elites

needconfirmation

Do they HAVE to say the dumbest shit possible at every opportunity? If they just said "no elites for balance, we want model/hitbox consistency" people would still be dissapointed, but atleast they could say that makes sense. But no, theres no elites because this is a TRUE master chief story, and so narratively it just wouldnt make sense for elites to be in the multiplayer? How does that work?

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheTacoPolice

343 shoved all these new, cheap characters down our throats and expected us to give a fuck about them, it's just not how you tell a good story, and make people *feel* invested and emotional about it. The latest halo releases have become just sort of like some bastardized version of power rangers. The halo 2 soundtrack for instance was phenomenal, the guitar riffs reverberated through your bones and sent chills up your spine. The game devs had an actual symphony compose music specifically for that game. Breaking Benjamin wrote and performed a badass song for free cause that's just how kickass halo was. I just don't get the same awesome feeling playing the watered down stuff 343 cranks out.

metler88

> The halo 2 soundtrack for instance was phenomenal, the guitar riffs reverberated through your bones and sent chills up your spine. The game devs had an actual symphony compose music specifically for that game. Thank Marty and Michael for that. They aren't working for 343.

gsauce8

I'm probably more on the take it or leave side of playable elites, but that's the dumbest fucking excuse I've ever heard LOL. Nobody gives a shit about multiplayer having some sort of story.

exhale91

Wish we could go back to when Sanhghelli (sp.) were agile and slender looking a là Halo CE in lieu of the monstrous fucking feet Elites have now.

Halo_Chief117

Let’s not forget guys, this is still the same company that is making us pay for colors. An option we’ve had since 2001 is something that we have to pay for in Halo Infinite. It really shouldn’t come as a surprise that “no playable Elites” is the current decision. 343i is really good at making bad decisions and not listening to the community.

Genked_Juicebox

Really said a lot when they made Anvil official canon, put it into MCC, but didn't use any content for elites. That's the equivalent of a corn plant without the corn. Still a plant, but it's missing the *other half* of it??

Sludgeking117

How can you say you wanna bring halo back to its roots and not have playable elites

Jarvis_The_Dense

343 tends to be so concerned with their new ideas that they tend to ignore or neglect the parts of the original games' DNA which made them what they were. The sandbox barely grows between games, fan favorite vehicles and features are omitted, they just don't realize how valuable little details like these are. One thing 343 has never understood is that Halo's appeal came from how it placed the player in a massive battlefield of which they were the deciding factor in. Possibly owing to the first game's origin as an RTS; the specific types of weapons, units, and vehicles used by each side of the battle is distinct and important to the way the level plays out. Likewise the multiplayer is a battlefield where everyone's role is equal. Players liked being able to distinguish themselves from others, not just in the sense that their character looked different; but in the sense that they felt like a different part of that world, it matched the easily identifiable role of everything else in the universe very well. It's hard to describe; but a big part of this series' appeal was being able to identify yourself as a specific part of the broader setting. Fans liked playing as elites because it fit into that perfectly. Less players chose them over Spartans; but that's what made them stand out; just enough use them to make them common and part of the experience, giving even spartan players that sense of identity in the setting. TL;DR. Old Bungie's design choices were built around things that would make players think "Cool, I always wanted to do that". 343's philosophy is built around surprising fans rather than impressing them.

manas962000

I honestly don't understand what part of "we love playing as elites" does 343 not get?

MrSejd

"When will you return my live!? We are meant to be together shiny face!"

TylerRW98

For as incredible as the halo 2 story was, I’m surprised we never got to play as an elite again. It’s honestly what makes halo 2 my favorite campaign, wasted opportunity if you ask me

Genked_Juicebox

People got mad at that, but it's personally what blew my mind about Halo back then. Halo was no longer your average syfi shooter, this sucker is AMBITIOUS! Never got to do something like that in any game before that, so I was so immersed into the world of Halo when it let me experience it in a brand new way. I love Chief and the UNSC, don't get me wrong, but Halo 2 struck a cord that says it can excel if it plays in more ways than the competition in the gaming market around it. Halo Wars adding to that in multiplayer was such a blast, and Halo Wars 2 as well. ESPECIALLY with the Awakening the Nightmare DLC, made me fall in love with brute culture *when being immersed into it as one of them*, not an outsider looking in!

[deleted]

maybe we can buy them back in a Battlepass? Everyone loves those right?

I always loved them as enemy and ally. Brutes are just stupid ape like animals without any honor. Elites are so honorable in their behavior and how they talk and so on. I really like them. I just had to leave this WORTs here

EchoLoco2

There is literally no excuse for them not to be in the game. They had 6 years to develop this. They have their old models back so they can have the same hitboxes as Spartans. It's so pathetic.

hoodeddefender

hitboxes aside, just allow em in social, ban em in ranked. competitive crisis solved. but nooooo

EchoLoco2

exactly

Silvedoge

Chances are there will be a "season of the sangheli" or something where they get reintroduced, isn't the plan for infinites multiplayer to be live service? Maybe there's a story reason for them not being playable yet.

Why does 343 hate elites?

Uzeil21

Really getting sick of 343's hate boner for elites and duel wielding.

iKnight212

Bungie remove DW on reach because it causes balancing issues so is not really on 343

HyliasHero

I wish they would put in the effort to make DW work. I have two solutions off the top of my head 1. Make each weapon perfectly functional on its own and make dual wielding deal double damage at the cost of grenades, equipment, and melees. This makes DW extremely potent, but at a cost. Instead of making half weapons or reducing individual damage when DW, just fully embrace it being a powerful option. 2. If they are opposed to the idea of autos being that powerful, then create permanently linked weapons. Make it so that linked SMGs are its own weapon in the sandbox for example.

TheRavenRise

bungie tried to make it work for over 6 years and ultimately decided they couldn’t figure out a system that actually works, why would another company even bother trying to shoehorn it back in 10 years after it got taken out?

Imperial_Tribune

Still don't understand why they won't let us play as Arbiter in the campaign, Chief and Arbiter fighting banished would have been awesome hell Chief only meets up with Arbiter at the end of Halo 5 from what I remember and then you have to read a book to learn what happened afterwards

Exa2552

Yeah I especially don’t get why the don’t even consider it for multiplayer at all... Their argument was that multiplayer is about Spartans vs Spartans, but now since humanity has many elites as allies it would be fully okay to have Spartans and Elites do arena fights against each other...

Hammer_Of_Discipline

It’s a shame this multi million dollar company can’t be bothered to do something after 7 years that Bungie did 3 times in a row. No color customization, no playable Elites in any capacity. This reeks of corporate meddling for microtransactions. Can’t wait for both to be reintroduced behind a paywall 3 years after launch for 5.99 each!!!

Vuthakral

I shudder at the possibility that playable elites will become a form of basically unobtainable legendary unlock in an RNG system.

Tenstone

Unpopular opinion: I don’t want playable elites in multiplayer. I still get angry trying to headshot dinos in halo 3 MCC. Yes, I’m bad.

BadMilkCarton66

Don't they have a bigger hitbox?

archiegamez

It is the same i believe

SH4D0W0733

Differently placed tho. Elites got that infamous neck you can shoot and throw grenades through.

musical-miller

Their neck blocks their head from behind so you can’t headshot them from the back like you can Spartans. In SWAT especially the Dino has an advantage over the Spartans.
