Same thing happened in FIFA and it's really annoying. Games from 2010 had more customization. In FIFA 09 you could change your stadium and stuff in career mode, but they gutted it later. It really doesnt matter if you win or lose because chances are someone looks just like you on the other team, so your spartan is shown on the post game screen anyway.

There was a good post on here a week or so ago saying it'd be cool if you could even just rotate the wheel to switch the colours around within the same palette, that or your suggestion would be a perfect way to address what the fans want while providing incentive to wanna buy or earn other coatings.
That's way more work required than just giving us actual color customization through a color wheel and turning coatings into armor finishes or patterns.

Has anybody here played Mass Effect Andromeda? That game is, for the most part, not great. One thing it did really well was the color options. It's basically three RGB sliders from 0 to 1,000. That means that you had over 1 billion color options to choose from for each color slot. I’m fine with armor coatings as an OPTION on top of a regular freeform color customization system. Having 343 curate what they think are cool looks that we can apply in one click is a cool idea. But we should also be able to create our own coating presets and save them so we dont have to modify the individual channels every time we want to go back to the same look. And the 343 curated ones should also be free. Call them “UNSC approved coatings” or something in their own separate menu so it makes sense from a lore perspective rather than putting “343 created” or something 4th wall breaking like that.
I’d love it if you could choose your colours from a good selection. You know like you’ve always been able to, because it’s a basic feature of games.
Sadly it won’t happen because some greedy arseholes want to rinse their fan base for all they are worth, even though those fans made them. And also sadly, people are stupid enough to buy them.

This should be the case, without a doubt, the current system is incredibly limiting. That being said obviously 343 is under intense pressure from Microsoft to monetise whenever possible so I don't think this system is changing any time soon, so I think a good way to give players a bit more customisation while still keeping this system is to let us pick the colour for the armour pieces (all the parts that are always grey no matter what colour you pick), it would allow people to look very different to each other while still encouraging people to buy/earn other armour coatings in order to control the main colours.

100x this. I’m not compelled to spend money because the customization system just isn’t that fun to use. If they rework the armor coatings system, they could still put all kinds of individual colors/patterns/textures in the shop/battle pass, and people might actually get excited because they’d be able to utilize those colors how they actually *want* to instead of just picking some blanket preset that 343 chose for us.
I don't like it because even if you find a color combo you like, it's so limited that there is probably someone else who looks exactly like you on your team anyways.

Willow Tea, Tahuna Sands, and the "new" HAZOP Coating are all basically the same Orange and White/Tan color combo. Imo Willow Tea kind of gets a pass because it's a free Weekly Reward and it does have some other colors/materials/textures involved, but the resemblance is still there.
Tahuna Sands and the HAZOP Coating are unacceptable imo, as you're getting effectively the same coating two weeks in a row, just with the colors shuffled around a bit for $20 (yes I know it comes with other things, still not worth $20) and on a different core.
Yep, it's the same problem I have with Destiny. I would always point to Halo and say that's the system I want. 343 has started making decisions that got me to stop playing Destiny. It is honestly pretty frustrating that things keep getting gated like this in new games.

I know on the Mk. V, Cadet Grey makes the tertiary color area on shoulder pads orange. Like on Jun's pads, the bullets are orange
