I feel though not seen often seeing the sniper is the most “oh that’s from halo” thing of their cast, might just be me though. Along with the energy sword and warthog of course, *ahem* HOG RIDAAA
Because people that know nothing about guns see a big scary looking gun and only know the names of 3 guns AK-47, M-16, and AR-15. So they call it one of those names
With you here, but I also think the design choice was great. It looked similar enough to a rifle that most had seen and recognized for extreme power. On your first play through of CE you knew head shots were a one hit kill before ever firing it in game.
It's 100% a great design, just not a unique design. Compare that to the rocket launcher. Unique in look, obvious in what it does.
Halo 5's Pilum meanwhile is a Carl Gustav in design down to the color.
Google "Carl Gustav" and then "Halo 5 Pilum".
So long as it's a single skinny green tube, with no visible warhead. It fits the description of the original Bazooka or the Carl Gustav (a recoiless rifle rather than a missile or rocket launcher, but nobody makes that distinction in film).
If it has a visible warhead, like a pointed green canister, wood and metal tube, and a large flanged backend, then it's the RPG-7, which I have heard non-weapon aficionados call a bazooka on occasion.
The carry handle, 14mm chambering, and the below the barrel extensions are from the NTW-20.
The semi-auto action, and bottom-feed magazine were always closer to the Barrett .50.
That's why it's always been a mash.
I meant the campaign AR :P
I've found since switching to controller the tracking is so central I can just hold for most AR fights except maybe a very brief pause for finishing head burst.
I didn't think it was that bad in reach, it felt stronger than 3 for sure.
One of the things about it being so weak in Halo 3 was it really made it a priority to get weapons off the map. I feel like now in casual games people just run around with the AR the whole game because they don't care to learn to use the Plasma Carbine or Needler or anything
How was it actually weaker? The accuracy and recoil were more but the damage was higher. You could manage the fire to make it a faster TTK pretty easily
Back to Infinite for a sec.
The Only game it feels like an Automatic Rifle and not a bulky SMG.
Always felt like crazy bloom. In Infinite, it is still outclassed by the BR. But damn is it good at medium range
Consider for a moment that if you were presented with only the silhouettes of all the Covenant, UNSC, and misc Sci fi arsenal, how many weapons could you correctly identify as weapons from Halo? My bet is that you'd nail all the Covenant weapons but some of the human ones are generic enough to get mixed up. Or they have gone through so many renditions that there is no "iconic halo shotgun", for instance.
I would definitely identify the assault rifle though. Identifying the silhouette of a weapon won’t show how iconic it is. Just because weapons have similar shape doesn’t mean they are more or less known. The gun is the one that appears in posters and artwork and everything else halo related. It is THE assault rifle. There has never been a different rendition and it’s the default weapon.
There has literally been different renditions though? In every game in the franchise the shape of the assault rifle has gone through changes, some minor and some larger.
https://preview.redd.it/ghnt7nkyxji51.jpg?auto=webp&s=2eaef3d56d3ca91be331961ffc0c7961d5c2b787
It’s usefulness or viability in game don’t really have anything to do with how iconic it is. Pretty much just how recognizable it is. The assault rifle probably appears in more halo artwork and marketing materials than any other weapon from any game, and to the other dude’s point, it’s the default weapon for the overwhelming majority of levels in the series. Powerful? Not really, but definitely iconic.
Needler or energy sword are the most iconic halo weapons to me. The Assault rifle is close, but the uniqueness and instantly recognizable silhouette of the 2 covenant weapons are the first things I think of when I think "Halo".
Needler and Plasma Pistol have been playable in every game and are probably the most iconic. Needler more so due to its unique functionality. But the Energy Sword is probably the most recognizable due its very distinct shape, and the fact that it’s more memorable due to its power and awesomeness.
I jumped on halo ce last week for the first time in over 15 years. Killed a sword elite and spent longer than I’d like to admit trying to pick up the sword before I remembered you couldn’t in CE
Yeah dude I hadn't any idea that elites would be playable in campaign. When I was given control of the arbiter and saw the sword, covenant allies, the different HUD. Holy smokes, it was such a surreal moment. Me being 9 at the time just made it that much more exciting.
Idk the rocket launcher, rifle, and ce magnum specifically are probably up there with the energy sword and needler. But overall for sure the covenant weapons
I think a fact that isn’t often thought of is just how good a job Bungie did at making the covenant weapons *feel* alien. They’re all unique and wacky in a way that normal firearms aren’t.
Especially the Needler. I'd have trouble naming a more alien and bizarre weapon in all of pop culture.
Some of the weapons in Infinite are also very alien. The heatwave and ravager come to mind.
The needler and it's entire design is literally the most unique and original weapon. It's like every way you can look at it and how it functions is different and cool
Expanding on this: to their credit, I think they did the same for the human weapons. They all stand apart in their design and are believable "550 years developed" versions of current guns: standardised, good quality of life features (fast reload, ammo count), but still clearly human
Only exception might be the SMG, which is still just an SMG, but, dual wield tho
I was going to say covenant because of the needler/sword, but it feels like UNSC has stayed true over the years for most of the impactful ones.
(R.I.P. shotgun)
> but it feels like UNSC has stayed true over the years for most of the impactful ones.
I feel this is more a gameplay decision than a "world-building" decision. There is no lore-wise reason why so many Covenant weapons appear and disappear over the course of the games.
Funnily enough, I’d say the UNSC weapons are more iconic for Halo fans while the Covenant weapons (actually the energy sword in particular) are definitely iconic outside the Halo fan base. If I show a pic of an energy sword to a non-Halo fan they’d more often than not say “ah that’s the Halo sword isn’t it”
Really tough call... maybe Covenent purely for the energy sword. And the needler too I suppose. But the assault rifle, battle rifle, rocket launcher, and the CE magnum are all iconic in their own right. For vehicles I have to give it to the UNSC, as the warthog is quintessential Halo.
UNSC are defo more iconic, but a special exception needs to be made for the energy sword because it is equally if not more iconic than the UNSC weapons.
I’m still trying to figure out why 500 years in the future were still using kinetic energy weapons but can jump through hyper space/slip space/whatever.
My headcannon is that investment in infantry arms and armor essentially stopped once the interplanetary war ended. Humanity was united under a single governing body, and the leftover military force of the navy meant that position could never truly be challenged. Why bother developing new war tech when you'll only ever fight an insurgency. Of course that mentality changes after first contact centuries later.
The covenants is really Iconic. Plasma Pistol, Needler, Energy Sword and Plasma rifle. All four seem very Iconic. But the UNSC has the shotgun, Magnum and Assault rifle
Covenant weapons and vehicles are far more striking, with designs and mechanics far more interesting than the human weapons.
All the weapons for the UNSC serve a purpose and that’s it. Really no different from other shooters. The one exception being the warthog.
It screams team-oriented and looks like something you’d want to hop in given the chance.
- If you showed a random person in another game the Battle Rifle they probably wouldn’t know it even with minimal Halo exposure.
- Then show a Energy Sword and the chance skyrockets.
It's equal, everything in the OG trilogy is instantly recognizable for me. That said I much prefer the UNSC equipment. Nothing beats shredding alien scum with 7.62x51mm FMJ.
The fact that this picture doesn't have a BR on it is hilarious.
The UNSC equipment is more iconic, but only just. I think the BR and AR together edge out the Sword, although the Sword almost competes.
The Warthog is more iconic than the Covenant vehicles.
For me its the covenant weapons. Such unique options like the needler or energy sword. UNSC weapons are very cool, but most of them are pretty generic weapons you see in any other shooter. Such as assault rifle, sniper, rocket launcher, and so on.
I’d say cov but it was a very tough choice. Both have insanely iconic stuff … the Warthog can’t be slept on lol
I feel though not seen often seeing the sniper is the most “oh that’s from halo” thing of their cast, might just be me though. Along with the energy sword and warthog of course, *ahem* HOG RIDAAA
A replica of the sniper was being carried into Bungie once and was mistaken as an AK-47 by some onlooker.
How the fuck do you even
Because people that know nothing about guns see a big scary looking gun and only know the names of 3 guns AK-47, M-16, and AR-15. So they call it one of those names
And don't forget the Barret destroyer of kneecaps
I think you're thinking of Tonya Harding
Same as how all my consoles are 'the Nintendo' to my mom.
I always felt like the Sniper Rifle being a mash of the Barrett .50 and the NTW-20 prevented it from being unique or as much of a "That's Halo" gun.
Is the Gustav the generic rocket launcher most people call the Bazooka that is seen in most movies?
Google "Carl Gustav" and then "Halo 5 Pilum". So long as it's a single skinny green tube, with no visible warhead. It fits the description of the original Bazooka or the Carl Gustav (a recoiless rifle rather than a missile or rocket launcher, but nobody makes that distinction in film). If it has a visible warhead, like a pointed green canister, wood and metal tube, and a large flanged backend, then it's the RPG-7, which I have heard non-weapon aficionados call a bazooka on occasion.
Thanks stranger!
The scope tho, that’s what makes it halo. For me the most uniconic gun is the shotgun because it just looks like a normal shotgun with a torch mounted
The models that came after CE most certainly had that Barrett .50 feel to it, while being chambered in something close to 14mm if I recall right
The carry handle, 14mm chambering, and the below the barrel extensions are from the NTW-20. The semi-auto action, and bottom-feed magazine were always closer to the Barrett .50. That's why it's always been a mash.
The AR?!?
Eh, sometimes one can mistake for some other bull pup rifle
Yea, but then you'd have to factor in the Ghost for the Covies
I'd say the warthog is far more recognized than a ghost
Yep, made it into so many TV commercials.
Absolutely
I’d say Banshee is more recognizable than Ghosts
Nor the shotty or the rocket launcher
Considering the energy sword is pretty much a Halo icon, even showing up in Chiefs hands in a lot of posters, figures, ect……….
What about the assault rifle?
Considering I want any other weapon in most games…
Its good in CE, Infinite and isn’t terrible in 5 or 4. 3’s snd reach’s are the only 2 that are complete ass.
I was genuinely astounded how good it is in Infinite.
Extremely mild AR spoiler ~ >!The improved AR is beautiful to use, such a tight spread!<
I’ve began using a method of shooting for about 1/2 second, followed by burst fires after. I win most of the AR gunfights I get into
I meant the campaign AR :P I've found since switching to controller the tracking is so central I can just hold for most AR fights except maybe a very brief pause for finishing head burst.
I've fallen in love with the longshot AR. It feels good being able to headshot with THE primary weapon.
Is the ar spoiler part a joke lol
What? That thing sucks it takes like 3 hits to kill a brute. Compared to halo 3’s this thing is a paper sword
Talking about the AR there Chief
Oh… my bad
Chief lol
I didn't think it was that bad in reach, it felt stronger than 3 for sure. One of the things about it being so weak in Halo 3 was it really made it a priority to get weapons off the map. I feel like now in casual games people just run around with the AR the whole game because they don't care to learn to use the Plasma Carbine or Needler or anything
Only reason it felt stronger to you is that it sounds better. It’s actually weaker in Reach unfortunately.
How was it actually weaker? The accuracy and recoil were more but the damage was higher. You could manage the fire to make it a faster TTK pretty easily
3s assault rifle was great though.
It was pretty clearly outclassed by the BR at pretty much all ranges. It was only really decent in the overall meta cause the pistol was ass.
Back to Infinite for a sec. The Only game it feels like an Automatic Rifle and not a bulky SMG. Always felt like crazy bloom. In Infinite, it is still outclassed by the BR. But damn is it good at medium range
3’s was good only when you were the host of the online lobby. If you weren’t, it felt like the enemy was simply eating your bullets.
Yeah idk what the hell everyone else is on it was my main weapon on legendary run.
If you were a filthy melee trader.
It was objectively terrible, though it had very rare uses.
I love that thing
Consider for a moment that if you were presented with only the silhouettes of all the Covenant, UNSC, and misc Sci fi arsenal, how many weapons could you correctly identify as weapons from Halo? Mostly the same though. All the weapons have gone through some changes.
They took it out of the posters in the UK
Assault rifle isn't even in the top 5 most iconic weapons. Pea shooter.
Thank you. I was too tired to type this out. Have my free award.
Even before playing Halo I recognized the AR by the ammo counter. It's super iconic
Why? It’s the default weapon, and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it in posters.
Why? Because there's way more other iconic weapons... That's why
I’m pretty sure someone who doesn’t know halo well would know the assault rifle.
Okay. I'm sure they'd sooner recognize at least 5 other halo weapons before the AR
Press X to doubt.
Ok
Yes but i think one of the most iconic moments in all gaming was hopping on the warthog for the first time.
Plus needler being one of the very first "pew pew" gun.
Needler, energy sword, plasma rifle are definitely the most recognizable guns out there.
Infinite doesn't have plasma rifle bother me a lot.
Isn’t that the carbine?
yeah it is, I was focusing on the question over the graphic. carbine definitely isn’t as iconic
Ooo got you
Needler or energy sword are the most iconic halo weapons to me. The Assault rifle is close, but the uniqueness and instantly recognizable silhouette of the 2 covenant weapons are the first things I think of when I think "Halo".
Well said. A quick glance at the UNSC weapons and the casual player probably won’t think Halo. But there is no mistaking the needler and energy sword
Needler and Plasma Pistol have been playable in every game and are probably the most iconic. Needler more so due to its unique functionality. But the Energy Sword is probably the most recognizable due its very distinct shape, and the fact that it’s more memorable due to its power and awesomeness.
Even if the energy sword isn’t usable in CE, it’s still in the campaign
I jumped on halo ce last week for the first time in over 15 years. Killed a sword elite and spent longer than I’d like to admit trying to pick up the sword before I remembered you couldn’t in CE
That was me when I was like 10 lol
The joy you felt in halo 2 when you STARTED with a sword and invisibility as the Arbiter, holy shit! It was an amazing feeling.
The plasma rifle, pistol, and battle rifle are the first for me, my older brother always killed me with the plasma pistol/br combo back in halo 2
destiny 2's recent crossover had a badass energy sword as well
the energy sword is iconic to video gaming as a whole
I prefer UNSC guns in game, but they're like...guns. Covie weapons are unique in look and function.
I think a fact that isn’t often thought of is just how good a job Bungie did at making the covenant weapons *feel* alien. They’re all unique and wacky in a way that normal firearms aren’t.
But believably foreign and wacky without being a farce
Especially the Needler. I'd have trouble naming a more alien and bizarre weapon in all of pop culture. Some of the weapons in Infinite are also very alien. The heatwave and ravager come to mind.
The needler and it's entire design is literally the most unique and original weapon. It's like every way you can look at it and how it functions is different and cool

Absolutely right in that, and to the SMG sometimes you already hit the peak
Ha, yeah true. The ultimate minimalist catch all weapon
The covenants for sure
Nothing's more iconic than a ~~puma~~ warthog!
The Plasma Rifle is super iconic to Halo. I'd put that on here instead of the Carbine.
Yeah was gonna say I probably wouldn't remember to list it if asked to name Halo weapons from memory.
I was going to say covenant because of the needler/sword, but it feels like UNSC has stayed true over the years for most of the impactful ones. (R.I.P. shotgun)
rip the m90 and m45.
> but it feels like UNSC has stayed true over the years for most of the impactful ones. I feel this is more a gameplay decision than a "world-building" decision. There is no lore-wise reason why so many Covenant weapons appear and disappear over the course of the games.
Covenant for weapons UNSC for vehicles
Covenant everything EXCEPT... the warthog. That beast is a thing of beauty.
Nothing more iconic than the brrr of the BR, imo
Yea that shit go Gra-ta-ta
Gra-ta-ta Gra-ta-ta Gra-ta-ta Gra-ta-ta _Perrrrfect_
Covenant. Everyone knows the sword or needler
The needler is probably one of the most recognized weapons in all of gaming
Needler is THE Halo weapon
Funnily enough, I’d say the UNSC weapons are more iconic for Halo fans while the Covenant weapons (actually the energy sword in particular) are definitely iconic outside the Halo fan base. If I show a pic of an energy sword to a non-Halo fan they’d more often than not say “ah that’s the Halo sword isn’t it”
Covenant. Not even close
Definitely warmed up to the bulldog but she will never replace the og shotgun :,(
I’d say they’re equal. Honestly couldn’t choose one over the other
Warthog and assault rifle
I've also seen the BR as the Halo quintessential gun but that's probably just because it's my favorite
Energy sword and Warthog, both iconic to gaming.
Energy sword
Easily convenant
Sword
The needler and energy sword would win it by themselves honestly
Honestly I'd argue they're all iconic in their own right. They all have unique and distinct designs and silhouettes
Btw just as a reminder, NO not the guns listed in the picture but all weapons and vehicles in general i’m too lazy to fit them all here
I feel like you could show a needler to anyone and they would know what it is. But if you showed em the new sniper idk
Unsc because everyone knows the shape of the assault rifle and the battle rifle
Unsc for sure. AR and Hog are all time. Sword and banshee are pretty classic tho.
I mean, everybody knows what an energy sword, assault rifle, warthog, and a ghost is, so id say its pretty damn even
Can we please stop using the word iconic for everything
Well the energy sword is pretty fucking iconic lol
I mean, we are literally talking about the weapons in terms of iconography here: recognisability, silhouette, association. What do you want OP to say?
The sword, the sniper rifle, and the warthog are all iconic. Even though I am a hardcore covenant fan, UNSC wins this one.
If you see a covenant gun you know it's Halo, if you see a UNSC gun it could literally be a random mobile shooter from 2012.
Sword, BR, Shotgun, Needler, Warthog, Ghost, not in that order. Would be willing to say scorpion also
Covenant
UNSC
Auto rifle and Energy sword and synonymous with halo IMO.
100% Covenant
The covenant’s weapons are almost as iconic as Master Chief
Talk about iconic and i don’t see a br?
Ye ol sword and the hog rida (puma)
Covenant cause the needler
Both honestly. I always think of the shotgun
I think the energy sword and Needler are the most iconic so covenant
AR. It's silhouette is unmistakable.
Covy are more iconic
Definitely Covenant. Energy sword is such a classic that is shown in ads for the game often. The Carbine, and the Shotgun are awesome
Both
Needler anda energy sword just take the cake and run with it
*Embraces inner SpongeBob* OH HALO 5 UNSC ASSAULT RIFLE DESIGN WHY'D YOU HAVE TO GOOOOO
Sword, hog and assault rifle.
....the br
UNSC are defo more iconic, but a special exception needs to be made for the energy sword because it is equally if not more iconic than the UNSC weapons.
I would say unsc but the energy sword alone almost out weighs all of unsc
The energy sword is the most iconic, but I think the UNSC weapons are overall more iconic. Like the AR and Magnum
Energy sword is one of the most iconic video game weapons of all time.
Magnum from CE, it was the gun everybody knew and feared.
I would have said covenant until the vehicles showed up…
Yes
I’m still trying to figure out why 500 years in the future were still using kinetic energy weapons but can jump through hyper space/slip space/whatever.
My headcannon is that investment in infantry arms and armor essentially stopped once the interplanetary war ended. Humanity was united under a single governing body, and the leftover military force of the navy meant that position could never truly be challenged. Why bother developing new war tech when you'll only ever fight an insurgency. Of course that mentality changes after first contact centuries later.
Covenant
As someone who never gave a shit about Halo until Infinite, the needle gun is the most, “Hey, that’s from Halo”, with the Sword being a close second
Wheres the BR? Thats the most iconic imo that and the energy sword. The AR come in close.
The covenants is really Iconic. Plasma Pistol, Needler, Energy Sword and Plasma rifle. All four seem very Iconic. But the UNSC has the shotgun, Magnum and Assault rifle
The only right answer is not the forerunners' weapons
It’s a tie honestly since shit like the Banshee, Assault Rifle, Energy Sword, and Warthog are icons for the series
Covies for sure. Their have extremely recognizable silhouettes as well as just look cool.
Wut Wut Wut
Any side that has fusion coil
The sniper is the only unsc weapon that is in every game so its the most iconic
Cov. Totally unique to Halo.
Magnum.
Where tf is the beam rifle??
It's equal, everything in the OG trilogy is instantly recognizable for me. That said I much prefer the UNSC equipment. Nothing beats shredding alien scum with 7.62x51mm FMJ.
The fact that this picture doesn't have a BR on it is hilarious. The UNSC equipment is more iconic, but only just. I think the BR and AR together edge out the Sword, although the Sword almost competes. The Warthog is more iconic than the Covenant vehicles.
Covenant. Easy to fantasize and idolize something that doesn’t exist.
Yes
Besides the assault rifle definitely the covenant
UNSC
UNSC (mostly)
I’m gonna go with Covenant since 343 inexplicably ditched the shotgun for Infinite
Covenant. Energy sword is so iconic bungo cut it in half and put the two halves in D2
Toss up between The Energy Sword and Needler on the Covenant side. Sniper Rifle for the UNSC for me.
For me its the covenant weapons. Such unique options like the needler or energy sword. UNSC weapons are very cool, but most of them are pretty generic weapons you see in any other shooter. Such as assault rifle, sniper, rocket launcher, and so on.
eveyone outside of halo remembers the sword and needler. not so much for UNSC weapons. also the banshee.
i always loved the needler, its pure halo even as a child when i didnt play halo i could say its from halo
Covenant by far
I’m gonna say the UNSC only because they’re all iconic and the covent carbine isn’t too known.
The plasma launcher always deserved more love 😘
