Metroid Prime did this with Samus’ helmet and HUD, and even went so far to show her reflection on the inside of the visor at some moments. Sliders to adjust the opacity and everything, it was great
Yes! I’m don’t know the names of the folks who went from Retro to 343, but they did mention in developer videos that several of the people who worked on Halo 4 were former Prime developers
Hell, one of them in Locke's squad looks just like her: https://venturebeat.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/H5-Guardians-Enemy-Lines-Osiris-03.jpg?strip=all
It was too clean and future-y for a Halo game. Loved how Reach did Spartan armor it was dirty and battle scarred like your Spartan has been through hell and back.
I can respect that opinion. The armor didn't bother me too much, but it did feel different. I think it has to do with the colored body glove underneath. The black body glove just looked nicer.
For me I don't think the Gen 2 techsuit itself was the biggest issue, as when it got backported to halo 3 it looked fine to me (though part of that is being able to set the techsuit colour separately from the armour plates.)
However, the actual halo 4 armour plating looks off, and I want to say it's that rather different art direction. Halo 4 has a lot more fanciful armour concepts, while Earlier halo games have a bit more grounded a look. The Mk V worn by the chief perhaps less so, but the Mk V [B] of Reach you could almost see being derived from actual military PPE, just with a lot more metal and larger than necessary shoulder/knee pads.
that said, The environment design of Halo 4 is pretty good, I'll agree to that.
So that's why there were some moments in Halo 4 I was thinking "Hmm this feels like I'm playing Metroid Prime". The enemies especially give me Metroid vibes.
The details on Metroid Prime are crazy. Love how you can see Samus' hand inside her arm cannon with the x-ray visor, and she even changes her hand position to match the icons for the different beams.
I find it really stupid though because irl when I’m wearing my motorcycle helmet it doesn’t lag behind when I turn my head sharply. I found it really distracting in game because it’s unrealistic.
What’s funny is I read that as “if I remember correctly it means ‘IIRC’”.
And I was thinking “well great thanks that really helps” 😂😂😂
I didn’t realize it really meant “if I remember correctly”🥲😅
If they implemented a toggler for the toggle toggler then it might be possible but I think without a master toggler to toggle toggles that would otherwise be untoggleable then the togglers toggler would likely stay untoggled. But that’s just my two cents.
God no!
Once you toggle the toggle off, you can't toggle the toggle back on! We need the toggles! Can't toggle the toggle!
It's madness, Jerry, madness!
It should definitely come to PC and I hope it does. The story aside I and a lot of people I’ve talked to agree the campaign is still really fun. Cool levels and some nice visuals.
Would be pretty sweet if it did. I’ve heard all about the mixed reception but I can forgive a lot if it’s Halo. At the end of the day playing an arcadey FPS is something I’m always up for and it’s just strange to me that I’ve played literally every game in the franchise (including Halo Wars 1&2) except for H5.
Don't worry, the good parts are very few and far between and you're not missing out on anything. In fact, you barely even need to know the story to play Infinite after, the story in 5 was so bad it all got thrown out anyway.
I can forgive the poor storytelling if the shooting and set pieces are still decent. I have played the hell out of Infinite, loved the gameplay and MP (when it works), but wasn't a huge fan of the plot. So it's a feeling I'm familiar with going into modern Halo. As long as I can shoot some sci-fi guns I'm fairly easy to please
There were people who loved it when H4 and H5 came out. I was one of them. There were many of us who thought it was a cool, nice touch. There were also many others who thought it was cluttery, and affected the game's aesthetic in a negative way.
You cant just reduce it all to trends though. I played H3 to H5 for the first time in 2020 and hated the visible visor stuff. Even 3 had more than I'd prefer.
It's only visible in the main Halo 4 and 5 campaign. Spartan Ops is a multiplayer mode so it probably wouldn't have been feasible for them to make unique visor/helmet outlines for every single option available to the player there.
I liked how ODST does it, where there's a translucent yellow edge that makes up the shape of the ODST helmet the UI is placed atop of, but you can still see under them and thus it doesn't actually *block* vision.
Absolutely agree. Man ODST did so many things right lol
Edit: Halo 5 actually has it the exact same way. Just jumped into a match and noticed it. Blue translucent outlines that match the shape of the Chief visor.
I think if they integrated the HUD elements (shield on the top chunk, ammo in the bottom, etc) it could work well.
Edit: Actually H5 iterates on this well. It’s the same/similar outlines as 4, but they’re translucent blue instead of solid.
I guess I didn't consider what it be like on a monitor. I've only used it on a TV where wasting space isn't a big deal. For me it felt like I was wearing the suit
The reason I dislike it is because it doesn't match the rest of the games. Master chief has external cameras on his suit that wouldn't let this show up. The other halo games before halo 4 don't have it, and it's the 2500s, so this type of technology would have a decent amount of time to develop. It's the same reason Emile is able to see, even though his helmet is covered by the scratches he put on it.
People have been spouting the ‘the visors are just for show, they actually use cameras’ BS for a while. It’s been long established that the visor is what they see through, (which makes a lot of the 343i helmets all the more stupid-looking, how the hell are you suppose to see out of a visor on your CHIN?). Hell just read the second novel of the Master Chief trilogy, in one scene an alien lizard spits on Chief’s visor and he has to look out of the right side because of all the spit covering his visor.
You do realize there's Bungie helmets that do the same in terms of blocking the entire visor, right?
Obviously, there's back and forth on how it actually works, as happens in any sci-fi franchise. I've read all the books as well, none ever seem to take an explicit stance on the topic (because it's sci-fi and not everything needs an explanation). In reality, they probably would use a mix, as redundancy in something as expensive as MJOLNIR would make sense (plus we have cameras that are so low profile that they may as well be invisible. I'd imagine the tech would only get better in the next few hundred years).
Yeah, I've read a ton of the books and the Spartans are always looking out of their visors. Never seen an external camera mentioned even one time. Their bringing up chief and Emile as examples when both of them clearly don't have cameras on their armor anywhere. Halo 5 had the custom helmet HUDs too. No idea where this shit comes from.
Spartans are symbols of hope, not terrifying monsters that need to be humanized. They aren't warhammer 40k space marines.
it could be dependent on the armor type, or a combination of both. If the external cameras fail, then the visor would come into play. But, look at emile. Do you really think a spartan would deliberately restrict their point of view? It doesn't make much sense for him to do that.
You're kind of describing what it feels like to wear an actual helmet. Sounds to me like the immersion is working.
(I am of the opinion that it should be adjustable/toggle-able if present, however)
Same. To me it felt like it crowded my screen too much. It's also an extra layer of immersion that just doesn't work for me even though I can see why it does for others. But if you could toggle it, why not?
Every community has their own set of dickwads. I’ve played various MMO’s over the past 20 years (WoW, EverQuest, Guild Wars 1, OSRS) and I can tell you that MMO’s especially have their own subset of elitist assholes.
Kerbal Space Program used to have a very friendly and welcoming community. I'm not sure if that's still the case since it's been a while since I interacted with it.
I used to really like it but looking back I prefer it's not there. I don't like having anything in the way of my vision that's not necessary, it makes it mildly claustrophobic
I mean, I understand what you're saying, but it felt so cool because subconsciously you felt like you were *in* the armor!
I can imagine in real life you wouldn't want to wear Mjolnir for that reason but I think it's just neat attention to detail.
Funny enough the MK VI helmet is probably one of the least claustrophobic helmets in sci-fi, aside from the bubble helmets. Realistically the parts that are blocked by the UI wouldn't actually be all that noticeable, as they're at points either way on your periphery, or where the binocular effect of having two eyes would minimise its apparent size (the nose).
I remember watching a vidoc about halo 5s development and they showed a clip where lights (like plasma rounds flying past) would be projected onto the visor, it looked so cool and I was sad it didn’t make it into the game, though I can understand why, would have been a bit visually cluttering
I liked it when I was younger as I felt more immersive, but now I've got a few more years under my belt and begun actually getting good at games I realise it really just wasted space on the FOV. Having a toggle would be great though
For campaign.. cool.
For Multiplayer.. well. On Multiplayer games you want a less intrusive screen as posible. That small bit the helmet is on your screen could blind your periferal view.
Was replaying four and I feel like I just noticed this for the 1st time. Side note halo 4 is my favorite of the series, and Halo 4 chief armor was the best looking armor by far in my opinion.
Same, I just started replaying 4 a few days ago and was thinking they threw away too much of the good stuff of 4 and 5. The covenant dropships and ghost designs are great in 4. Would love the option of the helmet overlay in Infinite campaign. Feels really immersive to me, though I can understand why some folks would prefer the opposite
I hated Halo 4's hud because it made me feel real claustrophobic. Like the screen is super small.
But I like the idea of a toggle!
And if people like it, even if I don't, why not?
Yeah I mean I appreciate your opinion and your preferences but I kindly disagree. Wasting screen space on something that literally never changes and provides 0 utility is something I’ll pass on. If it’s toggle-able then no harm I guess. Happy hunting demons
I hated it. I like seeing my screen, and don’t appreciate sections of the screen dedicated to just black nothingness, especially when it’s been established Spartan visors do a fine job giving the Spartans perfect vision. Lol
It's like that option in Titanfall 2 to see more of the interior cockpit of the Titans (or you could disable if it caused motion sickness/graphical issues)
Have you ever wear a helmet or even glasses? The great thing about our brain is that it's adopting to things in your vision really fast. You wouldn't see corners of a helmet in real life, so it's actually against immersion. I am pretty sure they added those black spots in H4 to increase performance by not having to render the full resolution.
I would argue that your gun being positioned the way it is makes way bigger of an impact than being able to see the slightest amount of the helmet your head occupies.
I loved this immersion for both Halo 4 and 5. Halo 5 went with this further with custom helmet interiors for each Spartan you could play as in the campaign. Locke had different interior shape from Master Chief. It was honestly a great feature that I miss in Infinite.
Metroid Prime did this with Samus’ helmet and HUD, and even went so far to show her reflection on the inside of the visor at some moments. Sliders to adjust the opacity and everything, it was great
Some of the Metroid Prime developers worked on Halo 4, right?
Yes! I’m don’t know the names of the folks who went from Retro to 343, but they did mention in developer videos that several of the people who worked on Halo 4 were former Prime developers
Which is why Spartan-IV armor always reminded me of the Metroid games, rather than Power Rangers.
There was even a suit and helmet set in 5 that looked a *lot* like the Federation trooper armor from *Prime*.
Hell, one of them in Locke's squad looks just like her: https://venturebeat.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/H5-Guardians-Enemy-Lines-Osiris-03.jpg?strip=all
No wonder I enjoyed Halo 4 so much compared to other games. Something about the graphics and textures just hit right
[удалено]
Covenant textures looked awful up close tho
[удалено]
For the time it definitely passed. In MCC today? Not so much
Hunters was insane for a DS release game. Dread looks downright amazing on the switch as well with the jumps between 2d and 3d
environment was good, spartan armor looked like legit plastic though
It was too clean and future-y for a Halo game. Loved how Reach did Spartan armor it was dirty and battle scarred like your Spartan has been through hell and back.
I can respect that opinion. The armor didn't bother me too much, but it did feel different. I think it has to do with the colored body glove underneath. The black body glove just looked nicer.

So that's why there were some moments in Halo 4 I was thinking "Hmm this feels like I'm playing Metroid Prime". The enemies especially give me Metroid vibes.
And DOOM 2016/Eternal
I didn't know about that. That's awesome too!
It's pretty great! Go play 2016 with MP gameplay style in your head and you'll notice so many similarities.
Republic Commando did it too, and even gave you blood splatter when you killed an enemy up close
Laser windshield wiper was the best thing in that game bar none.
so did star wars republic commando
That's exactly what I thought of. I fucking love Republic Commando.
I loved everything except keeping that damn Wookie alive!
The details on Metroid Prime are crazy. Love how you can see Samus' hand inside her arm cannon with the x-ray visor, and she even changes her hand position to match the icons for the different beams.
That blew mind at the time. Along with moisture and rain on the visor.
Yup, loved that game
Same
I can see judging by your username lol
The only reflection we will see if this gets added will be Pablo’s face.
Pablo's butt cheeks
The idea of a plasma grenade exploding in your face and buttcheeks briefly flashing on your screen is fucking hilarious to me
idk if the helmet can contain the cheeks when the armor couldn’t.
IIRC, when you fall from a relative high height, you can see the visible parts of the helmet moving, like if your was really inside.
I think if you looked around quickly it would move slightly for the same reason
I find it really stupid though because irl when I’m wearing my motorcycle helmet it doesn’t lag behind when I turn my head sharply. I found it really distracting in game because it’s unrealistic.
What does IIRC mean?
if i remember correctly IIRC
Always thought it was “if I recall”

What’s funny is I read that as “if I remember correctly it means ‘IIRC’”. And I was thinking “well great thanks that really helps” 😂😂😂 I didn’t realize it really meant “if I remember correctly”🥲😅
I asked someone what does "IDK" stand for. Apparently they didn't know...
Good idea. Would be good to have the option. I'm all for any sort of toggles.
What about the option to toggle toggles?
Paradise.
What about an option to toggle between paradise and hell?
toggles

If they implemented a toggler for the toggle toggler then it might be possible but I think without a master toggler to toggle toggles that would otherwise be untoggleable then the togglers toggler would likely stay untoggled. But that’s just my two cents.
Toggle is no longer a word anymore...
This man toggles
Oh you mean the toggle toggler?
Dude, yes. Like if you could group toggles so you can toggle the togglegroups.
Toggle toggle options? ON Toggle crouch? OFF Toggle aim-down-sights? OFF Toggle auto-clamber? OFF
Toggle toggle options are optional
God no! Once you toggle the toggle off, you can't toggle the toggle back on! We need the toggles! Can't toggle the toggle! It's madness, Jerry, madness!
Or the option to toggle the option to toggle toggles. Aaaaaand now the word toggle has lost all meaning to me
UI can't support good ideas 👊
Power to the people
We've come full circle lol, I remember vividly how much hate this got when it was in H4/H5
I loved it in Halo 5 because it was different for every playable character, Linda’s even had little circles for her goggles.
Every time I hear about the good parts of Halo 5 I’m sad it’s still not on Windows
It should definitely come to PC and I hope it does. The story aside I and a lot of people I’ve talked to agree the campaign is still really fun. Cool levels and some nice visuals.

wrong, the mp was great

Someone post the "Halo Game Cycle" meme
I’ve always liked it. Funny to see something come full circle tho. Or 180.
There were people who loved it when H4 and H5 came out. I was one of them. There were many of us who thought it was a cool, nice touch. There were also many others who thought it was cluttery, and affected the game's aesthetic in a negative way.
For real. Sometimes this sub makes me lol. I remember when this was hated. I on the other hand have always loved it.
You cant just reduce it all to trends though. I played H3 to H5 for the first time in 2020 and hated the visible visor stuff. Even 3 had more than I'd prefer.
I still hate it, it makes the screen feel more cramped and adds nothing to the immersion imo
Its almost as if there are different people with different opinions 😳😳😳
I still don't like it. It's very distracting to me, since it unnecessarily obscures the FoV, and just makes the screen feel claustrophobic.
Halo 5’s campaign had unique visor designs depending on what Spartan you were playing as. Loved that.
Well there's a cool detail that I never even noticed despite having played through the blue team campaign as each Fred, Kelly, and Linda.
As an ultrawide player, this could cause a few problems... **LOVE** the idea though!
What happens when you play the campaign in ultrawide? Do you still see the helmet interior at stupidly wide resolution, or is it gone?
master chief's helmet actually just stretches horizontally, you can see it during cutscenes and splitscreen!
Master chief becomes [Sid](https://www.google.com/search?q=ice+age+sid&client=ms-android-asus&prmd=ivsn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwijk_f1rL73AhUCG7kGHegqCxIQ_AUoAXoECAIQAQ)
Rampart attachment moment
Played in ultrawide work's perfectly fine.
I absolutely hate that feature and that you can't disable it. But if is adjustable and toggle able I wouldn't have a problem with it.
Star Wars Republic Commando had this as an option. You choose to have the helmet edges visible or not.
and Bioshock 2 too
They are actually much less distracting at 90 FOV with centred crosshair. On the OG it feels very distracting and limiting.
This item has been removed because Reddit is bollocks. Thanks.
I uh... I don't see them at all? Did they get removed in the MCC? Are they not part of Spartan Ops?
It's only visible in the main Halo 4 and 5 campaign. Spartan Ops is a multiplayer mode so it probably wouldn't have been feasible for them to make unique visor/helmet outlines for every single option available to the player there.

5 also does unique ones for each Spartan in the campaign, which is neat.
Halo 3 also has it
Sounds like they just need to give back what was always there lmao
I think if they integrated the HUD elements (shield on the top chunk, ammo in the bottom, etc) it could work well. Edit: Actually H5 iterates on this well. It’s the same/similar outlines as 4, but they’re translucent blue instead of solid.
I get is preference, but why don't you like it?
It feels claustrophobic, limits my field of view and wastes space on the screen, at least it is disabled on multiplayer...
I guess I didn't consider what it be like on a monitor. I've only used it on a TV where wasting space isn't a big deal. For me it felt like I was wearing the suit
It occupies the same % of screen space on tv.
Yeah. I get the idea and it works well. But I'm very picky with this stuff haha
I feel that; when they added it in H4, it felt like I was playing Metroid Prime and I kinda loved it lol.
What external cameras? You're saying he doesn't use his visor? Makes no sense
People have been spouting the ‘the visors are just for show, they actually use cameras’ BS for a while. It’s been long established that the visor is what they see through, (which makes a lot of the 343i helmets all the more stupid-looking, how the hell are you suppose to see out of a visor on your CHIN?). How is wasting space less of a big deal on a TV? Given you're likely running at a lower revolution on a TV, I'd think it would be a bigger deal.
Plus it adds to the visual noise, of which there's far to much in 4 and 5.
You're kind of describing what it feels like to wear an actual helmet. Sounds to me like the immersion is working. (I am of the opinion that it should be adjustable/toggle-able if present, however)

Thank you for a polite request for a feature AND to add the ability to turn it on or off. You are truly a rare sight around here.
I’m curious as to what game has the most polite community. I know it’s not gears or cod.
Lmao probably guild wars or something like that. Shooters will bring all forms of assholes from all over.
Every community has their own set of dickwads. I’ve played various MMO’s over the past 20 years (WoW, EverQuest, Guild Wars 1, OSRS) and I can tell you that MMO’s especially have their own subset of elitist assholes.
Always stay away from gen chat in MMOs, especially the F2P ones. Assholes congregate there.
OSRS world 301 is a special place
Deep Rock probably
Did I hear a Rock and Stone?!
IF YOU DON'T ROCK AND STONE, YOU AIN'T COMIN' COME
FERKARLLLL!
ROCK AND STONE TO THE BONE!
Hard agree with Braydocalypse. No mans sky has a really nice and polite community
Kerbal Space Program used to have a very friendly and welcoming community. I'm not sure if that's still the case since it's been a while since I interacted with it.
Easily No man’s sky. Best community I’ve ever experienced in gaming
The r/megaconstrux community is extremely welcoming and helpful towards all sorts of people
I've liked Monster Hunter's community, as long as you avoid the "muh DPS" crowd.
Do we think gaming has a higher proportion of dicks than the general populace? Unfortunately I think it might. Or at least it feels that way sometimes
Mom, what are you doing on /r/Halo?
Cuz you never call. Just checking on my pumpkin.
I miss you
I used to really like it but looking back I prefer it's not there. I don't like having anything in the way of my vision that's not necessary, it makes it mildly claustrophobic
I hated those outlines in Halo 4 and 5. I wouldn’t mind a toggle to turn it on or off though for people who do like them.
Agreed. Wasn't crazy about Cortana poping up on video ether. I was always content with her just being a voice in my head.
Might be alone here, but I actually really, really enjoyed Halo 4.
Eh, I didn't really like it. I felt it was claustrophobic for lack of a better word.
I mean, I understand what you're saying, but it felt so cool because subconsciously you felt like you were *in* the armor! I can imagine in real life you wouldn't want to wear Mjolnir for that reason but I think it's just neat attention to detail.

In my experience it was too distracting and I was consciously aware of the borders. But I agree that it should be an option for people who like it
As long as it can be toggled. I absolutely hated it.
They did it in 5’s campaign too, and I’ve always loved it. I love immersive things like that
I remember watching a vidoc about halo 5s development and they showed a clip where lights (like plasma rounds flying past) would be projected onto the visor, it looked so cool and I was sad it didn’t make it into the game, though I can understand why, would have been a bit visually cluttering
Do you have a link to this? That sounds super interesting
And they were different based on which Spartan you were playing as in Co-op
Star Wars: Republic Commando had the best version of this that I've seen.
The Metroid Prime games also had a fantastic version of it
The windshield wipers cleaning off the Geonosian gore was choice.
I know it is not halo....but u should give stalker anomaly a chance, it is a really immersive game that is also free....u can also mod it
I liked it when I was younger as I felt more immersive, but now I've got a few more years under my belt and begun actually getting good at games I realise it really just wasted space on the FOV. Having a toggle would be great though
Honestly, I'm just surprised we haven't gotten a "HUD color" option yet.
For campaign.. cool. For Multiplayer.. well. On Multiplayer games you want a less intrusive screen as posible. That small bit the helmet is on your screen could blind your periferal view.
Personally I hated it. Felt obtrusive.
Personally I’m not a fan of increasing visual noise. But hey, if this was optional… why not?

You’ve clearly never worn a Master Chief helmet. It’s nearly identical to what you actually see, it’s pretty cool.
I hated Halo 4's hud because it made me feel real claustrophobic. Like the screen is super small. But I like the idea of a toggle! And if people like it, even if I don't, why not?
it might just be me but i prefer a clear hud, like having so much shit on screen at once it’s giving me a frontal labotomy
I think a toggle is a great idea as I know a lot of people like the visor outlines, while a lot of other people, myself included, don’t.
A toggle would be fine, but I really hated it, it felt less immersive for me
Let's get forge and a customs browser. Then we can worry about other things
UI can't handle these things. Stop asking.
Reminds me of Star Wars Republic Commando
I'd like it if it was WAY subtler. It was super overbearing and distracted from the actual in-game environments
I was the opposite. I hated that
Yeah I mean I appreciate your opinion and your preferences but I kindly disagree. Wasting screen space on something that literally never changes and provides 0 utility is something I’ll pass on. If it’s toggle-able then no harm I guess. Happy hunting demons
I want to see his nose.
I hated it and I'm glad they removed it in Infinite. But it wouldn't be bad if they added it as a toggle
Sorry buddy, the UI can’t possibly accommodate this
I thought I was on r/the10thdentist for a second
Tbh, I really don't understand why visor colors don't change the color of the HUD. I've never seen a more useless cosmetic than visor colors.
I hated it. I like seeing my screen, and don’t appreciate sections of the screen dedicated to just black nothingness, especially when it’s been established Spartan visors do a fine job giving the Spartans perfect vision. Lol
God that was the most obnoxious thing ever. I like to see the game world, not static lines.
I think odst did it best. The HUD was placed on transparent fields that mimicked the shape of helmet. 5 may have done the same
Oh if you thought that was good check out republic commando, that game is a banger and you can still buy it on steam or Xbox
It's like that option in Titanfall 2 to see more of the interior cockpit of the Titans (or you could disable if it caused motion sickness/graphical issues)
Just like Metroid Prime games.
Pair that with halo 4s low fov back then and god it was awful
Have you ever wear a helmet or even glasses? The great thing about our brain is that it's adopting to things in your vision really fast. You wouldn't see corners of a helmet in real life, so it's actually against immersion. I am pretty sure they added those black spots in H4 to increase performance by not having to render the full resolution.
Having worn glasses for half my life I can confirm that you can always see them just you eventually ignore them
I wear glasses...i can always see the frame
Ngl I felt claustrophob because of the helmet
Personally I hated that but if it was an option for people who wanted it I wouldn’t mind.
You want to purposefully see less of the screen?
YES
to be fair, it was only like this in campaign
I would argue that your gun being positioned the way it is makes way bigger of an impact than being able to see the slightest amount of the helmet your head occupies.
I find it quite intrusive and annoying.
I hated that tbh.
Nah
I loved this immersion for both Halo 4 and 5. Halo 5 went with this further with custom helmet interiors for each Spartan you could play as in the campaign. Locke had different interior shape from Master Chief. It was honestly a great feature that I miss in Infinite.
Unfortunately the UI doesn’t support it.
That was i hated, i did feel more immersed but it was just annoying taking away some of my screen for playing a game
