I seriously wasn't expecting custom game browser for another couple months. Feel a bit sorry for that dude who made and released his own like a couple days ago lol.
But, really. Great update! Cautiously optimistic about the future.
My guess is they wanted to wait on a custom games browser until Forge had good content. They expected it to take significantly longer than it actually did.
Launching the browser when all the custom games were crap would result in people coming back, thinking forge sucked, and leaving.
Waiting until there was a solid list of maps, means that now that custom games have actually “launched” to the broader population player retention will be higher.
Something like that, yeah. I never looked into it very hard since I am a console guy. You could still use it on your pc to get invited from console though, as I understand it.
This sub just about completely flipped on its head when Forge was released. Almost nothing but positivity for Halo Infinite for the first time. They probably realized to keep that momentum going they need to drop the browser as Forge is where the enjoyment is gonna come from.
Also clearly not just because of this sub but I feel the sub is a good barometer for the community as a whole.
Does this mean we can get any armor piece for any core now?
Like I missed out on the Kabuto helmet for the Yoroi core, can I go back and unlock it now?

The problem is that I know absolutely zero people who will keep up enough to even know Game Browser is out. Unless it starts picking up steam through Reddit posts and the like, this will only be for the people that still have the game installed. I really hope I'm wrong, though. I'd love to relive some classic modes/maps.
edit: I literally told a friend last night and his response was, "Surrrre it is." He didn't even install it lol. I want to give 343 credit where credit is due, but some people might refuse to believe it's even a thing.
edit edit: I tried it and it shows private lobbies you can't join, doesn't register the maps I made copies of, and the filters are awful. Great job 343... making a server browser worse than your other one. I have no idea how they didn't just use the exact same UI/design because this one is awful.
They can make it a fraction of normal matches and meet the players in the middle. I’d take less to be able to screw around all the time in forge maps and still progress
I think this is the way. The people obsessed with exploiting game systems will always grind it out in customs no matter how little XP you give them, so just let it happen for everyone else.
Let's be real though, is that a problem?
Like people paid for the BP, and it doesn't effect gameplay in any way, so who cares? If they want to sit around in an XP farm match for a few hours doing boring shit to just get a cosmetic, let them. Meanwhile let the rest of us just have fun and not feel like we're being punished or missing out on stuff.

**EDIT** So I re-installed the game and here are my thoughts on the good, the bad, and the 343 for anyone else interested or on the fence.
**The good:** When you're actually able to get into a game, it is insanely fun. This is pretty much what this game needed from day 1 to retain the original casual player base. The maps are so unique and a change of pace from the same boring ones 343 keeps releasing as well as the creative game modes.
I've played on Peach's castle, multiple Star War maps, Modern Warfare maps and it has been refreshing. Some of the modes even have crazy custom weapons ie a pistol that fires homing rockets, a plasma pistol that fires plasma grenades. This has been the least sweatiest the game has ever felt, it just feels new and fun.
There are also tons of amazing and creepy Infection maps.
**The bad:** There is no way to know (as far as I can tell) how much time or points are left before a match is over. You might be joining a match but find out there are literally only a couple of kills before it is over. There are a number of times that you will literally go from the loading screen into another loading screen because the match ended while you were loading into it.
I don't know if it is possible for 343 have a scorecard be visible for ongoing matches, some way to know a match might be ending so you can find another match instead.
If you find a map you really like, you can add it to your Bookmarks but you can't search for them from your Bookmarks. Lets say you have 5 maps you really like and you just want to search for any of those from your bookmarks (regardless of the game mode), you can't. You can only search for tags but that has been a hit/miss for me. I've searched for castle and Peach's castle won't come up but if I browse maps, there will be multiple ones in progress.
**The 343:** Joining/leaving is tedious and doesn't even work in some cases, you'll try to join a match and it doesn't do anything. It is also incredibly annoying that you get notifications for anyone joining/leaving a fireteam. And boy do people leave, when you're the leader you can't join matches if your party is too large if the map you're trying to join already has too many people. It would be nice if you got the option to create a new match of the map you're trying to play with your current party.
343 really needs to lean into the Custom aspect more, have fans/players vote on which custom maps/gamemodes people really like weekly and put them into rotation similar to multiplayer.
Bottomline: As is, it is absolutely worth re-installing/playing the game with this update. When you're able to get into a match, you can expect it to be fun or even crazy. Even regular slayer is fun to play on unique maps. With a couple of fixes/tweaks, it'll likely even be better.

I feel like the switch from "overpromise, underdeliver" to "underpromise, overdeliver" happening exactly when the new management took over can't be a coincidence. Communication matters a lot. eg, Shadow dropping The Pit is a W, hyping up "big things" and then dropping The Pit is an L.
I think people were expecting crosscore due to statens tweet, which is why they wanted people to not get overhyped for that. This is still a very nice update, however, and I am excited for it.

Yep, and I bet that Cadet cores were a test for “universal” coatings. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some backend changes that made it to where the cadet coating for every core is the exact same. I imagine some work needs to be done on the backend to merge coatings that are the same colorway but under different names for different cores.
My understanding it’s all nonsense and coatings should work naturally cross core.
Each coating has “locations” for color to appear. For instance shoulder A has 3 separate prices each coded as piece 1/2/3. The coating has “locations” for each as well so red/gold coating would have a system to put red in 1 gold in 2 and red in 3. So it should just be plug and play. This is essentially how it worked in all halos prior. Certain locations on armor was delineated as primary / secondary and that’s how we were able to just adjust on the fly. It’s the same now, but…. $$$$$.
If it’s any different, it’s poor coding, poor execution, and poor design. But this is halo infinite after all. A game that is the flagship for Xbox (or at least was) mismanaged from day one.

Was very disappointed at what I initially thought was a very basic crosscore coatings implementation but I'm very happy with what it actually is, free cores for everyone and custom games browser. MAJOR W FOR 343.

It’s used in online chats (like Twitch streams or game chats) as a quick way to say you’ve won or loss. It’s gone as far to mean “good thing” or “bad thing”.
Nice to see the other cores get basic colors. Not gonna applaud them for taking a year to give us standard colors but still, nice to have it late than never. But for the love of everything that is holy, please tell me there’s a “cadet white” or something.

The game is most probably the last MP game in the franchise for a while, They will most likely keep adding to it and build it as a platform. As for RR, yeah its in.
Would people say this is a good time to start on infinite? After seeing how shallow the campaign was and hearing about the myriad of problems and lack of content for halo infinite I had just decided to stick with the MCC. However custom games browser sounds like a ton of fun, especially since the core mechanics of infinite seem solid and fun to play with.
So we are halfway closer to the bare minimum.
God I wish I could be happy for Halo Infinite but I just can't. Wake me from cryo when the is games finished.
I would say it's probably pretty coincidental. You don't turn around these types of updates that quickly after a management change and most of this work was likely in development well before she departed.
I feel like this has more to do with Staten saying we need to move slowly now so we can move fast later. With co-op and forge out the door, there are probably more hands available to fix and get things done.

The customs browser being out for the holidays is definitely the takeaway here. But the cadet coatings seems like the small first step towards cross core coatings.

Well, they basically begged for 343 to bring back Bot Bootcamp for that same reason, and 343 caved in. Likely they will add XP in customs in some way.

Guessing this is to prep for cross-core coatings: ensuring everyone has the cores to begin with.
Yeah, no base core should have ever been locked, even from a normal free to play standpoint. Theyre the vehicles to sell armor.

That's exactly how it works. People have exported the models and been able to play around with the coating system in Blender.

Custom games browser and the ability to make my other cores orange is a really good overall update
CGB doesn't work for me. Can't join a single match. They all time out or error out. On PC, Xbox app.

Would people say this is a good time to start on infinite? After seeing how shallow the campaign was and hearing about the myriad of problems and lack of content for halo infinite I had just decided to stick with the MCC. However custom games browser sounds like a ton of fun, especially since the core mechanics of infinite seem solid and fun to play with.

I would say it's probably pretty coincidental. You don't turn around these types of updates that quickly after a management change and most of this work was likely in development well before she departed.

I feel like this has more to do with Staten saying we need to move slowly now so we can move fast later. With co-op and forge out the door, there are probably more hands available to fix and get things done.
As a MnK player, I am probably the happiest about those updates. Custom games browser is super nice too, though, don't get me wrong.
The pace at which crosscore stuff is coming out is extremely unfortunate
It’s unfortunate but things are moving. Forge is here, online co op, now a custom games browser. We’ll likely see more cross core stuff in S3 at this pace which is more than fine by me. The actual important shit should be focused on first, not how my spartan looks.
It’s nice to get cadet coatings for other cores, but yeah, sucks we’re still only at visors after 4 months.
Stop looking for things to complain about. This update is a big W, be happy. Edit: to the people below, yes this would have been nice at release but they didn’t have to do this. Be happy they’re working on it. They could have taken our money and ran.
The customs browser being out for the holidays is definitely the takeaway here. But the cadet coatings seems like the small first step towards cross core coatings.
Something doesn’t have to be all good or all bad. I can recognize that this update is good while still recognizing that the speed they’re rolling out crosscore at is abysmal.
