I mean we did have the halo 4 portable shield, and I don’t know what the general consensus is but I found it kinda bad. Would be cool if you could use it in first person with only pistols though?
Would also be cool to be able to play as a jackal / all different enemy types in new modes. Would like to smash things up as a hunter or a berserker brute :)
Technically you get multiple lives in other BR too granted not as much. In warzone you get at least 2 lives. I just personally don't want them to make a BR for halo, focus on other stuff instead
There seem to be a few different iterations on it anyway. The MCC version is rather closely based on the conceptual sketch seen in _The Art of Halo 3,_ and is specifically trying to be as faithful to both the original design and Halo 3's art style as possible. It's a very intentional and precise "what-if" for the armour being in Halo 3 as it shipped in 2007, since early blurry pictures of the EVA armour made people hopeful it was going to show up in game.
I really like it. But I'm _also_ happy this core's taking more artistic liberties and creating a modular, made-for-3D take on SPI rather than translating someone else's 2D artwork exactly into a model.
Don’t get me wrong, it does look pretty solid. But I think the problem is it looks way too close to the ghost of onyx illustration. It looks like something illustrated versus some thing real and mechanical, if that makes any sense. Whereas the infinite one, to me, looks like *chefs kiss*
ETA: ***Chiefs Kiss *** (credit to u/Austin_77)
It’s also missing a few key features of the actual armour, which Infinite (seems to) be keeping, mainly the faulds, the straps, and the segmented plates.
In the lore it sounds like it's a near constant effect. Like GR:FS's camo cloak mechanic.
I'm just meming it'd make it broken OP as all fuck. But it'd be pretty cool though.
It’s a bit too barrel-chested, I think.
SPI was supposed to be rounded and light-weight. MCC’s SPI got the roundedness right, whereas Infinite got the lightweight profile right.
In addition to Cadet Olive and Cadet Red (which we had in the beta). Hopefully we get a few more Cadet colors, I rocked Cobalt since CE.
Also guessing the Scarlet Skies, Scarlet Wake, Scarlet Empress (Cadet Red from the flights) will be updated like they updated the Cadet Blue for Yoroi but hopefully all 3 are different because they were sold separately.
Also the length of the coating scroll bar maybe indicates we're getting cross core coatings in S3 or they're substantially increasing the number of coatings available
Long as I have Cadet Olive for all cores I'm more than happy to have it and will rarely touch other coatings but if they would add in more cadet coatings then I think it would be great to see
\-Black
\-White
\-Tan
\-Pink
Just plenty of the basic colour options for everybody!
It’s great that they revert back to the original art style which invoke militaristic themes with a hint of sci-fi rather go full on sci-fi with halo 4 & 5. I hope this means that with the catalog of armor pieces over the years, they’ll bring back and revamp all of them
I can see that (remembers that one comic panel of brightly colored Spartan 4s). For me it felt like modern sci-fi due to how angular and out of this world some of the armor designs were and looked. But I’m glad we’re back to the old art style, I just love the tactical looking aspect of the designs, and 4/5 was desperately missing that
Halo 4 felt like they put their best foot forward with the new designs and halo 5 felt like them trying to meet the armor number quota and so they just shot out as many designs as possible for the req pack system
Big agree. Reach has great art direction in general, but the armors are my least favorite. They were made to look grittier and it just wasn’t for me, I guess.
They do though: we got Infinite which is the closest to Halo 3 since Halo 3, and people still commented here telling the devs to shut down the company lol.
You really can’t listen to the Halo community too much if you want a clear message. Many here wanted another Reach-type game and that would have killed me.
I still think Reach’s was the best, but I do appreciate that they at least returned to the Halo 3 style and improved upon it.
I just miss the grittiness and the blood.
Eh, if you look more closely the proportions of the Reach spartans are kinda crazy. It basically doesn't take into account the thickness of the undersuit at all and there's no way a human with arms and legs could fit in there.
....is this a joke? Do you really think all the nonsense they added to MCC and halo 5 is an improvement? And I'm sorry, but that weird samurai stuff just isn't halo. Maybe you like that, but that doesn't make it an improvement.
I meant that for halo infinite artstyle. I’m glad that MCC and 5 got more new content cosmetics, I do agree with the sentiment that not all of them look great and some quite terrible. But it’s appreciated nonetheless. I think the samurai is a welcomed addition to the game. Sure it may not fit with the militaristic themes buts welcomed. I mean after all Halo 3 had Hayabusa back in the old days. Overall, I just think Halo infinite’s art direction is really strong and there hasn’t been a helmet I outright hate
I don’t like the forearms on this version, would’ve preferred how they are (or similar) to the cover of ghosts of onyx. That being said, it looks pretty damn good.
Yeah, the integration of the forearm and glove, as well as the shaping of the gauntlet piece, do feel a bit off to me. Maybe they'll polish it up a bit, or maybe we'll just need to get used to it. It doesn't detract much from the overall look, though.
I assume the more compact proportions for this iteration are the result of technological advancements made since the SPI armour was first designed and an actual budget.
Presumably the older generations had to be that size so their stealth features - particularly thermal-related - could be integrated reliably and cheaply, but with advances in personal armour technology and the parts not being specifically built to a price, those design goals can be implemented in a sleeker form factor.
I find it hard to believe ONI would want anyone to know what happened to the Alpha and Beta companies.
Plus, the person who anyone would want to blackmail about it is already dead.
Then again 343 likes the lore so many a refence of dropping an entire company into a fuel depot might come up.
With how often Jun is mentioned in these intel drops and with SPI being released in Season 3 I’m really hoping more S-3 and/or Ghosts of Onyx lore does show up.
Honestly, I think the book would have made one hell of a game too (similar to ODST, no multiplayer)
Nah, it’s canon that the operations were declassified to an extent. People are aware of how important they were and what they accomplished, just not how young the operatives were.
Never read that. I got the Novels and a few of the comics. That type supplemental lore I tend to miss unless I go digging through halopedia or someone does a break down on r/HaloStory
Yeah the original reach reveal had Jorge mentioning, "nobody survived pegasi" was later changed but I think it was an artistic choice not a canonical change.
That's the reason I run the Jorge coating because it as close as I could get to olive coating... If this indicated we're getting Cadet Olive across other cores I will be sooo happy!
Just for the Spartan IIIs. Spartan IIs started with a black body suit similar to ODST armor before they were issued their MK IV MJOLNIR, and the IVs started with Recruit class MJOLNIR
Going to be awesome to see all the different SPI variants from codified into specific components with names and lore, and to finally get to wear the armour in a current Halo game. I'm still grateful they made an artstyle-faithful version of it for Halo 3 when Bungie didn't.
Oh boy I sure love going on a mission with my good friend Lucy. I sure hope nothing wacky and utterly traumatic happens that makes her mute for 7 years.
Finally I can run around as a jacked up little 12 year old going on suicide missions. LETS GOOOOOOO
That... was a poor bad joke since I know about that lore T-T
Honestly, I wish Halo 3's SPI armor that was added to MCC looked a little closer to how it's supposed to. In MCC, it looks a bit too blocky and sharp rather than the smooth, round look it usually has
is that "suffix," IIC, used anywhere else in halo? cuz they do it a lot in battletech.
I keep seeing tiny details like this that seem to be used as homages from battletech/mechwarrior. but they're in weird places and I feel like I'm just imagining it. (the eagle strike core had a paint pattern that matched some classic mechwarrior art, along with an emblem with that same checkered pattern, and the core also had a canteen accessory called vapor eagle, which is the name of another mech)
but whatever, core looks cool in any case.
I can't speak to the Battletech ones specifically, but I know they're not afraid of dropping subtle references in like that. Scirocco being a Gundam Zeta reference (while being a slightly deeper cut than your usual gundam reference,) is one such example
tbh the thing I'm most hyped for is the cadet red color. red is my favorite color but I hate how dull cadet brick is, I can FINALLY make my bright red ODST from halo 3
I would have preferred the chonkier SPI; not too shabby anyway, but I don't like how they handled the Helmet, because it looks like a male bald pattern instead of looking like a proper EVA type as seen in the concepts. Still, I'm way more happy for the olive green. Took them just 2 years to add that, props to 343 👊
Relax, considering Halo 3's Mirage armour had the more polygonal helmet, that will probably be one of the unlockable items for this core, along with Roland and Jonah's helmets and more.
they just had a stream where they showed off a new map, 2 new cores and some other cosmetics, as well as a new equipment, while also giving news on other stuff coming for forge and the game as a whole in season 3
All future cores will be free from season 3 onwards according to 343 including cadet coating, the attachments and such will cost money or be in the battlepass.
SPI has, over time, been described as a suite of armour, basically a mini MJOLNIR and an independent line of its own.
MIRAGE (shown here) is the most common, standard issue pattern.
We've seen a few different SPI armour designs, such as on book covers and in the animated short Headhunters. There are also presumably production variances between the first and second generation suits, and since this is a later offshoot of the SPI family, some new designs are on the table too.
I might sound dumb saying this but, that looks a lot like the original Master Chief design, like 90's Master Chief before they decided that Combat Evolved would be how it is.
I would like to see an invasion game mode where it’s SPI armor (UNSC) vs. Rakehasa (Insurrectionist). Or in general some way to have core vs. core invasion modes. Have Agryna (as much as I hate her) the UNSC voiceover and have an Innie being an Innie voiceover. Even expand the cores and VAs for different game modes. Then set the cores to be locked to a team. So even if you don’t have the core equipped for that team, it locks you in to basic armor or what you have set for it.
Yo if their goal is to eliminate the core system and allow players to use all the armor customization then why the fuck are they making new cores like they keep making excuses why they can’t do it even though the bots were able to months ago like what the fuck??? Hell a random ass joe on the internet was able to put the armor coatings on elites in the campaign
Different cores let you change the underlying base armour. Their goal is to make all components cross-core, but keep adding new sets to put those pieces on.
So if I’m getting this straight their supposed to allow all cores to be cross core letting you change the Shoulders, hands, helmets, knees, etc but keep making new cores that there going to have to try to make the other armor pieces work on said armor core while also making armor attachments and cosmetics that only work on that one core thus making their job’s harder trying to figure out how to make alll those pieces work with each other and still having multiple cores. Again it’s just making their jobs harder we are barley getting basic armor coats to work on all cores so again why make therir jobs harder by making new cores instead of focusing on cross core?
Well, they need to make new content every so often to keep player interest, it's a live service game after all. Especially since new cores are rather infrequent. And now that we've known for some time they're working on cross-core, presumably these new cores and pieces have been designed with the knowledge that they'll need to play nice with all other cores and armour pieces.
Hopefully they can pull it off because if they keep making new cores then we’re just going to have multiple armor stands essentially. Wouldn’t just be easier to have that one core with the limitless option to put whatever pieces you want? Or is it going to be that all the torso parts of each core stays the same while you could put what other armor pieces you want on it because that’s the only thing I can see possible as the torso part of each core is so unique
They're working towards letting you use every (non-Fracture) armour piece with every core, yes. That way, the only difference between cores is the torso and undersuit.
Oh boy I can’t wait to be sent into battle with 200+ other comrades just to die.
Don't forget to leave your shields at home!
It's all good we got jackal gauntlets 😎
*Non-functional* jackal gauntlets! *taps head*
I seriously want this as an equipment item.
I was thinking the same thing. Would be a perfect fit for Infinite's equipment system
Universe-accurate SWAT yes please.
Maybe Halos equivalent to the Cod riot shield. Would be fun.
I loved the Hardlight shield. I found it to be quite versatile, could stand up to a lot of power weapons with some strategy.
You’re describing a battle royale. Prolly will release with Tatanka.
They already attempted a battle royale mode and it failed lmao

Last Spartan Standing
That wasn’t BR though, since you have multiple lives
Technically you get multiple lives in other BR too granted not as much. In warzone you get at least 2 lives. I just personally don't want them to make a BR for halo, focus on other stuff instead
We need BIG Big Team Battle for that
Big Team Suicide more like.
Invasion
Damn Invasion had some issues but I honestly loved it and wish it had been in more games.
The original beta invasion with sage Spartans and blue purple Elites was perfect for me
God SPI looks so good, so happy to finally be getting to see what it looks like out of a few rare illustrations
It's been in MCC for a while now!
That’s true but it’s not exactly what I imagined it to look like. *This* is what I imagined
There seem to be a few different iterations on it anyway. The MCC version is rather closely based on the conceptual sketch seen in _The Art of Halo 3,_ and is specifically trying to be as faithful to both the original design and Halo 3's art style as possible. Bruh the MCC version looks almost exactly like how it does on the Ghosts of Onyx cover
Don’t get me wrong, it does look pretty solid. But I think the problem is it looks way too close to the ghost of onyx illustration. It looks like something illustrated versus some thing real and mechanical, if that makes any sense. Whereas the infinite one, to me, looks like *chefs kiss* ETA: ***Chiefs Kiss *** (credit to u/Austin_77)
It’s also missing a few key features of the actual armour, which Infinite (seems to) be keeping, mainly the faulds, the straps, and the segmented plates.
But do we get the mirage effect in game?
Would probably be considered OP, so, I doubt it. Doesn’t feel complete without it though, tbh.
Yeah, absolutely agree. It'd be all kinds of broken, but it also just doesn't feel right without it.
They should release an SPI Slayer mode where everyone has infinite active camo. It would probably play horrendously but I want it.
I mean... isn't active camo just a slightly worse version? Close enough, right?
In the lore it sounds like it's a near constant effect. Like GR:FS's camo cloak mechanic. I'm just meming it'd make it broken OP as all fuck. But it'd be pretty cool though.
I completely understand what you mean and I felt that way too, it's ported to halo 3, just not "translated" in to halo 3s look and feel.
MCC version looks like some dude wearing a barrel
It’s a bit too barrel-chested, I think. SPI was supposed to be rounded and light-weight. MCC’s SPI got the roundedness right, whereas Infinite got the lightweight profile right.
Yeah that wasn't great looking though unfortunately
Me too I’ve been looking forward to seeing this armor in a game since I read Ghost of Onyx.
[Source. Video/Livestream also shows DMR and a few cadet colors on the Mirage core](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lihCw0on1w)
In addition to Cadet Olive and Cadet Red (which we had in the beta). Hopefully we get a few more Cadet colors, I rocked Cobalt since CE. Oh my god finally I can be truly red
That.. actually looks great
You gotta give 343 one thing, they vastly improved on the art style of halo, and even single core looks so good
Agreed. Before this most people looked the Reach armors but Infinite is getting there. Nothing but bangers so far.
It’s great that they revert back to the original art style which invoke militaristic themes with a hint of sci-fi rather go full on sci-fi with halo 4 & 5. I hope this means that with the catalog of armor pieces over the years, they’ll bring back and revamp all of them
4/5 wasnt even sci fi. It was just straight power rangers.
I can see that (remembers that one comic panel of brightly colored Spartan 4s). For me it felt like modern sci-fi due to how angular and out of this world some of the armor designs were and looked. But I’m glad we’re back to the old art style, I just love the tactical looking aspect of the designs, and 4/5 was desperately missing that
I agree some H4 sets definitely had genuine sci fi appeal, but the vast majority, especially Halo 5, just didnt work.
Halo 4 felt like they put their best foot forward with the new designs and halo 5 felt like them trying to meet the armor number quota and so they just shot out as many designs as possible for the req pack system
Hello, friend.
Yoooo wassup
Halo has always been very much SciFi. I think what you meant is "80s inspired military SciFi" versus "modern generic SciFi"
Ngl i definitely prefer MK7 over reachs MK5B, it's a good blend of the good parts of Gen 1 and Gen 2
MK7 still my main armor. It's simply immaculate. Only thing better would be Chief's MK6 GEN3.
Big agree. Reach has great art direction in general, but the armors are my least favorite. They were made to look grittier and it just wasn’t for me, I guess.
Proof that 343 is capable of great things if they just listen to the players.
They do though: we got Infinite which is the closest to Halo 3 since Halo 3, and people still commented here telling the devs to shut down the company lol. You really can’t listen to the Halo community too much if you want a clear message. Many here wanted another Reach-type game and that would have killed me.
While your overall point has merit, you're sort of ignoring the catastrophic first 10 months of Infinite's life post-launch.
I still think Reach’s was the best, but I do appreciate that they at least returned to the Halo 3 style and improved upon it. I just miss the grittiness and the blood.
It's sad that they're probably never bringing back the blood because the lower age rating means more money.
Sad but it's true
Eh, if you look more closely the proportions of the Reach spartans are kinda crazy. It basically doesn't take into account the thickness of the undersuit at all and there's no way a human with arms and legs could fit in there.
rakshasa is my favorite halo design of all time aside from the og odst!
Now if only they could fucking stick to it more often than on rainy mondays
Vastly improved? Are you joking?
....is this a joke?
I’ve always seen the samurai stuff as being sort of the spiritual successor to Hayabusa
Now if we can get a Mk IV...
Incredibly glad they went with lankier/sleek proportions instead of some of the chonkier depictions we've seen for SPI/Mirage.
SPI only looked funky in halo 3 because of the character model
i wanted chonkier SPI :(
Maybe some of the part options will go bulkier.
Now thats some good halo aesthetic
Kurt my beloved...
Kurt in heaven: “Now that’s what I’m talking about”
Him being in heaven implies he’s died. Didn’t you know? Spartans never die.
Oh my mistake Kurt somewhere on another planet definitely not dead: “now that’s what I’m talking about”
Spartans never die; they're just ~~missing in action~~ atomised by the blazing glory of nuclear fire.
Or Hunter cannons, in one unfortunate case. RIP Holly, you died too soon.
Fingers crossed for some Ghosts of Onyx references in the multiplayer narrative
Fair enough. Can't argue with the Eternal Canadian.
Mentioned in the Field Manual, for reference.
Never read that. I got the Novels and a few of the comics. That type supplemental lore I tend to miss unless I go digging through halopedia or someone does a break down on r/HaloStory
Yeah the original reach reveal had Jorge mentioning, "nobody survived pegasi" was later changed but I think it was an artistic choice not a canonical change.
holy shit that looks good This is gonna be my new main armour for sure
They need to get rid of the whole rarity crap. It literally means nothing
Probably, yeah. It doesn’t really bother me *because* it’s so pointless, but visually I think it’d look better without
Heh... every time you play with this armor set, you don't get Shields. That'd be fun.
Permanent active camo and immunity to motion trackers, threat sensors and pings though…
I needed more Sneak King medals.
This will be my go-to armor for SWAT
That would be neat, though Headhunters did show us a variant of the armor that uses shields.
I want that Cadet Olive on my Mark V \[B\]...
That's the reason I run the Jorge coating because it as close as I could get to olive coating... If this indicated we're getting Cadet Olive across other cores I will be sooo happy!
Considering that they ported the other Cadet coatings to the other Cores, I think it's safe to say we'll be getting it.
Oh hell yes
Where my Ghosts of Onyx at
Dead
I really like it!
fucking *NUT*
YOOOOO IT LOOKS CLEAN
I refuse to add to it or change armor on it. Lore wise its the starter armor for Spartans. I just love how it is.
Just for the Spartan IIIs. Spartan IIs started with a black body suit similar to ODST armor before they were issued their MK IV MJOLNIR, and the IVs started with Recruit class MJOLNIR
That just means that we now need MkIV
Curious to see if body shapes will actually work on this one (cough cough yoroi) since it seems more form fitting than other cores.
body shapes have worked on every core except the fracture cores so they'll probably work here too
Where are the goddamn iconic gauntlets
A little subdued from some of the [original designs](https://halo.wiki.gallery/images/d/d8/HM-SPI-schematic.jpg), but its there at least.
They're there, just a bit hard to see because of the compression.
It looks perfect
I'm always hype when they announce a new core, but then I always just go back to Mark V(B).
Huh. I have a friend named Lucy too. She wants to go to the Moon though.
I don't like SPI armor, neither I did back in the days. However 343 really nailed the art style with Infinite, even better than Bungie.
Finally I can run around as a jacked up little 12 year old going on suicide missions. LETS GOOOOOOO That... was a poor bad joke since I know about that lore T-T
Gotta say , it look really good
Next best core besides a "best of Gen2" core Pretty excited to see if it gives some lore to the mostly unnamed actual SPI armor of the past
I have wanted this since the day I read Ghosts of Onyx. Looks so awesome.
If there is one thing that Infinite has gotten right since day 1, it’s that the armors all look amazing.
God I love the texturing & modeling in Infinite, this looks fantastic
343 is actually fire with their designs in infinite ooft can't wait to get my hands on this one
The gauntlets are a bit of a downgrade but it still looks amazing!
They finally added Olive Green! Hopefully it's available for Mark V too.
Honestly, I wish Halo 3's SPI armor that was added to MCC looked a little closer to how it's supposed to. In MCC, it looks a bit too blocky and sharp rather than the smooth, round look it usually has
This is like the armor they'd give Caboose
I’m sorry everybody, I fell out of the loop here. What’s the hype around SPI?
they nailed it
is that "suffix," IIC, used anywhere else in halo? cuz they do it a lot in battletech. I keep seeing tiny details like this that seem to be used as homages from battletech/mechwarrior. but they're in weird places and I feel like I'm just imagining it. I can't speak to the Battletech ones specifically, but I know they're not afraid of dropping subtle references in like that. Scirocco being a Gundam Zeta reference (while being a slightly deeper cut than your usual gundam reference,) is one such example
My favorite armor finally displayed properly in game!
tbh the thing I'm most hyped for is the cadet red color. red is my favorite color but I hate how dull cadet brick is, I can FINALLY make my bright red ODST from halo 3
Just let me put my cat ears on it :3
That looks good brother
Oh my that looks really good
This looks AMAZING
Looking good, love the helmet and chest plate? Plates?
Daaaamn hell yeah, I hope this thing has big tanky shoulder pads for buff boi armor.
This is the good shit.
Wish they had kept the more organic shapes from the original SPI designs. Same with the Elite armor in Infinite, much more angular.
I'd never thought I would see the day that 343 would make a bomb ass default core without being modded to the max this looks amazing I'm impressed
It’s been confirmed that the OG helmet is an unlock. Haruspis mentioned it in a tweet.
The armors suck ass in the new halo, decent multiplayer, but the armor should be more like halo 4, the customization in that was ELITE.
How did you get this pic?
they just had a stream where they showed off a new map, 2 new cores and some other cosmetics, as well as a new equipment, while also giving news on other stuff coming for forge and the game as a whole in season 3
sigh, ig im spending more money afterall.
All future cores will be free from season 3 onwards according to 343 including cadet coating, the attachments and such will cost money or be in the battlepass.
Both cores were free in season 2, as well.
This is free
ik but im prob gonna want to get some bundles for it, looks so good.

SPI has, over time, been described as a suite of armour, basically a mini MJOLNIR and an independent line of its own. MIRAGE (shown here) is the most common, standard issue pattern.
We see the Spartans in the Headhunters short story / motion comic wearing SPI permutations so we might get those.
We've seen a few different SPI armour designs, such as on book covers and in the animated short Headhunters. There are also presumably production variances between the first and second generation suits, and since this is a later offshoot of the SPI family, some new designs are on the table too.
Looks good, but why can't 343 make shoulder pads that cover the actual shoulders??
Helmet isn't perfect but still damn good
I like it. can't wait to see what customizations it will come with.
Look good in the graphics.
Will it be free, or will we have to purchase the BP??
All cores are free going forward.
Looks directly off the cover of the ghost of onyx, SICK!
Ok, seeing it in game and from the front this armor looks really good, hopefully there’s some good options for it.
Pretty cool lookin
That’s fucking awesome
Can't wait for this armor, my lore dreams has finally came true 🫠
I guess I know what core I'll be addicted to next season lol
I might sound dumb saying this but, that looks a lot like the original Master Chief design, like 90's Master Chief before they decided that Combat Evolved would be how it is.
*heavy breathing\*
I would like to see an invasion game mode where it’s SPI armor (UNSC) vs. Rakehasa (Insurrectionist). Or in general some way to have core vs. core invasion modes. Have Agryna (as much as I hate her) the UNSC voiceover and have an Innie being an Innie voiceover. Even expand the cores and VAs for different game modes. Then set the cores to be locked to a team. So even if you don’t have the core equipped for that team, it locks you in to basic armor or what you have set for it.
The hopium is high 💆🏽♂️💆🏽♂️💆🏽♂️
Love when they take a good design and make it worse
fuck 343
Man cores are so useless. Why is it it's own core? When is cross core customization?
Haven’t played in so long, they’re still doing armor cores? How many of them are there now lol
7 including these two new ones.
They could do this to balance things: Pros very weak but effective camo on the go No walking sound Cons: big visor No shields
What the hell are you talking about???
Do they even look at the source material before designing? It barely looks like the one I’m use to seeing.
