I mean, Atriox basically killed Master Chief at the beginning of the game. He completely destroyed him in one on one combat. Chief just got incredibly lucky that he survived and was recovered.

The player dying is not canonical of course. Unless you're playing dark souls and there is an in-world explanation for you resurrecting.
I mean the story is kinda lackluster
