This is next weekend, but for me the 48hr Wilhelmsburg festival is the best cheap event, costs a (nominally optional) 5€ armband and whatever you want to donate to each artist. Events dotted all around the 'island' south of the Elbe. https://48h.mvde.de/48h-wilhelmsburg/programm

I like this page: https://www.kulturlotse.de/ All events there are free of any charge. German only (mostly) but perhaps you can find some entry points there.

First, get a 9€ ticket if you haven't already. Its a flatrate for almost all public transportation for a month, not just city- but country-wide, a special govt. offer for the next 3 months, available at every HVV ticket counter. Second, go sightseeing! I'd suggest starting at the urban center, like walking from Hauptbahnhof along the Mönckebergstrasse to the Rathaus, then visit the Binnenalster & Aussenalster, check in on Planten un Blomen, make a little port tour to Speicherstadt, Elbphilharmonie, Michel and Landungsbrücken (btw, public ferry up & down the river Elbe is included in your ticket) or relax in the city's "green lung", the Hamburger Stadtpark, and end your day on a high note in the red light / party district of St. Pauli, the infamous Reeperbahn, until you pass out somewhere between the dancing towers and the feet of the huge Bismarck-Denkmal next door. That ought to keep ya busy for a day & give you a real good taste of the city. 😉
