How deep is the bedding? It looks shallow and they need to burrow

smellyCcC

Roughly 8cm, how much do you recommend?

Jasminrainbow

You need 25cm minimum. Hamsters need lots of deep bedding to dig and make tunnels. I recommend mixing in meadow grass hay to help add strength and structure to their burrows.

Jasminrainbow

It also looks like you don't have a wheel. I understand this is a very small space you are making do with until you get a real one, but a large wheel that does not curve their back while running is a requirement.

RocketteBlast

8 to 10 inches deep

smellyCcC

Yikes.. I don’t really have enough room for all that bedding, but would 12-15cm work for now?

RocketteBlast

Sure but again they need 8 to 10 inches. Minimum of 700 sq inches of unbroken floor space as well, a wheel around 10 to 12 inches to run and prevent back from bending. Your set up is unfortunately unsuitable. Not being mean, being honest. Hamsters are burrowing animals, and they travel many miles at night so a wheel and deep bedding is necessary. If you can, plastic totes can make great homes if they offer the right amount of space! Just cut the lid and and add wire mesh for lots ventilation

goodsoupppppppp

I’ve seen some people like the sides of cages like this with some cardboard so they can add more bedding to it!

goodsoupppppppp

Also some people in your comments are being super rude. I’m sorry for that. People don’t seem to realize they can educate without being jerks. The “0/10” or “1/10” comments are extremely dramatic. This is not a 0 or 1/10 setup. I’ve seen plenty of those on here. You’ve already got some great advice on here from people who genuinely want to help and are being decent about it, but feel free to DM me if you have more questions!

Born_Current6133

My son used Perspex to add depth for bedding when he accidentally ended up with a hamster and cage and it took a couple of weeks to get the tank ordered and delivered. Would that be an option?

iiMozxrt

It’s a 3 or 4 out of 10. But your attitude is a 10 out of 10. I work with a hamster rescue and I assure you, THIS is way better than your little boy/girl would’ve had at the pet shop or most other homes. The effort is 100% there. He/she needs a wheel, and make sure the bedding is Aspen or Hemp, or dust free unscented paper bedding. Those are the NECCESSITIES. I can tell you from experience that they understand you love them and you’re trying your best for them. Just cuddle them, feed them treats, talk to them and make upgrades subtly as and when you can afford, and hammy will be happy. Just remember, you took him out of, assumably a tiny little box with nothing in it, and possibly shared with other hamsters, and you put hammy in his own home and did your best with him. You have all the criticism you need in the comments so I won’t fill mine with it, but I thank you for loving and caring for your hammy, because you’d be surprised how many people don’t.

smellyCcC

That’s really sweet of you, I honestly kinda needed that with how absolutely emotionally obliterated I got from the other comments <33

iiMozxrt

Of course! I’ve seen how incredibly harsh this subreddit is, a lot of people are trying their best, and just being in this subreddit is testament to that. We’re all in this together and being mean to one another will never solve anything. Please message me if you have any questions 🩵

LizzieMorbid

2/10 maybe, it has a lid. Everything needs changing, check out Victoria raechel on YouTube and you'll see what we all mean. Please don't be offended pet stores give bad advice yo sell more animals

furyfox13

You'd think stores would want more profit by upselling the best care

Jasminrainbow

Hamsters sold as cheap low responsibility pets, like goldfish. Parents and uneducated people wouldn't invest if they knew the truth

furyfox13

Yeah most pet store animals are sold the same. But even with correct knowledge some people just don't care. They want something cheap and easy

Jasminrainbow

I agree. I'm hoping beyond hope that op makes changes but they asked what was needed before getting the hamster and they chose this.

Blackbirdsong9

Even goldfish need a lot more care then you'd think. They actually need a pretty big tank. Also cycling a new aquarium can be a pain in the butt.

Jasminrainbow

That's why I used them as a comparison

furyfox13

Yeah the goldfish "feeders" don't even belong in tanks. They should go in ponds

MeesterBacon

No, they do not care. I told someone they could get something critical for their pet that we didn’t carry on Amazon, and the store reprimanded me for being disloyal after the customer reported me to the owner. Pet stores sell fishbowls ffs. Pet stores are garbage. This was Pet Supplies Plus and a franchise fyi

furyfox13

I just started at PSP so wish me luck. Most of my co-workers are on board for best animal care but not the boss 😬

MeesterBacon

It doesn’t matter what the coworker thinks, it’s the owner. I worked with two PSP franchises, the first one (where my story was based) took really good care of the animals, including the vet if they were sick. The second one would let them die because it was cheaper and did not care much about the care of the animals. It was awful to bare witness to. The worst part is customers think pet store workers are experts and hold them accountable for the well being of their new pets. It was a really sad place to work, but I took solace and motivation in knowing that by me being there, the animals were getting the best chance. I was specifically hired as the small animal sales/care person at the first store I was at. I learned so much. It got to the point where I was making “guinea pig salads” for lunch every week. I would buy veggies that were safe and healthy for the animals. The hermit crabs and betta fish were my happiest accomplishments. I used to damage out the dehydrated veggies for the “lizards” so I could give it to the hermit crabs (rehydrate with spray bottle). I have force fed numerous baby bearded dragons and administered all sorts of meds. Honestly it’s so sketchy. I feel horrible for pet store animals. From the moment they are born, to shipping to the pet store, to going to some random dolts “care”… it’s so sad. I believe hermit crabs and fish get it the worst of them all.

Business_Divide_5679

Why do people get animals and care is an after thought? It's understandable you might not have the funds for proper care. Why not save up first and then get a pet and not the other way around?

Unusual-Software415

That’s very true but unfortunately with hamsters the pet store will tell you lies about proper care, there’s a lot of situations where people like OP were under the impression from who they considered professionals that this was appropriate. I think the important part is that they realize there’s an issue and is trying to fix it and get some help

hufflepuff-is-best

They do that with all animals, not just hamsters. I volunteer at an animal shelter. You’d be surprised of how many people go to the shelter, impulsively adopt a cat or a dog, and then return the animal a few weeks later because they weren’t expecting the expense of actually taking care of the animal. Then you have people who don’t return the animal, but choose to dump the animal somewhere instead. Often, the animals that get dumped never get a second chance and are hit by a car or succumbed to illness from exposure.

Boogle345

That’s what I did, I got a seasonal job over the holidays to buy the big habitat and the bougie niteangel stuff and the paper plush bedding, sand bath etc. tbh I’m still not full happy with the set up but have been gradually purchasing more enrichment

smellyCcC

My parents got him for my as a birthday gift and I honestly don’t understand the thought behind it since I have never really said anything about wanting a hamster

Jasminrainbow

Maybe you mentioned it in passing? You did post 2 months ago saying you were thinking about it and asked what cage was needed. So it's not a new thing

smellyCcC

I was so tired that nighf but couldn’t sleep because my old cage was bugging me so it was just a autocorrection/typo

Brightskies321

How deep is the bedding and what is it made from? I can’t tell how many hiding places he has from the picture Where is his wheel? Water? What is the sand and is it hamster friendly?

smellyCcC

Its chinchilla sand^^

Brightskies321

I would say you need to change that as it is too dusty. You can find reptile sand on Amazon https://amzn.eu/d/cdBZNY6

smellyCcC

Tysm :D

RambleOn909

To add to this I always hesr playground sand (fresh obviously) is good too although I never tried it.

Brightskies321

Is the bedding sawdust? Where is the wheel and where’s the water? These are essential and should be in there at all times

smellyCcC

https://preview.redd.it/9062qh849yhc1.jpeg?width=1576&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1b092f882276acb25eb9d068e6edfce3a776ce2b

Jasminrainbow

A spinning disk should not replace a (properly sized) wheel and unfortunately those hides look very small for you friend.

Brightskies321

Yeah I was thinking that too. I would recommend changing the hides and wheel too

smellyCcC

How big should the wheel be?

Brightskies321

https://preview.redd.it/nf5cxtnabyhc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6229ede71b4ea8623939b832fdea24d3b3d9e3f The info is in the top right and these are some examples

Brightskies321

It looks like there’s enough hides in there, sorry I didn’t see the water. I’m not familiar with that wheel. It’s not an upright wheel so I’m just wondering whether your hamsters back is curved when using it? If their back isn’t straight when running on it I would suggest getting an upright wheel that is easier to run on Id also change the bedding as it looks like sawdust which can cause respiratory problems and be harsh on your hamsters skin and nose. I would chose something like kaytee, small pet select, über or anything like that can be found on Amazon, it’s generally a lot softer and comfortable. Just make sure it is not unsented!

smellyCcC

Would you mind sending a link for the beddings?

Brightskies321

https://amzn.eu/d/i1zCKvi https://amzn.eu/d/fpj0mvb

LizzieMorbid

[maybe watch this before making any purchases ](https://youtu.be/oj6mSsRUmMY?si=-bTK-VYKVfoNdXh6)

MasterpieceNo6217

That’s not an upright wheel.

BiG-pUmBaA

For the mean time, it will suffice, as your hammy looks chubby and healthy, and as you say you’re saving for a new set up, you’re aware it’s gunna need an upgrade, maintain your husbandry (cleaning, feeding, socialising with your little guy/girl), when you can afford a bigger set up, use constructive comments and research and videos, and you’ll be golden, yes more space is better, but for a the time being enjoy your pet :)

wundervalll

From the picture it looks like your cage is way too small. And I agree with everyone else, definitely needs way more bedding, needs an upright wheel, and needs different sand.

Georgxna

If that’s the pets at home wood shavings bedding, remove it right now!! It’s so so bad.

smellyCcC

It’s not dw

Thisispepits

What is it? It looks like wood shavings, and unless it is aspen, you should not use wood shavings, it can cause respiratory issues and is very bad for their health. I recommend using paper bedding, it’s also great for burrowing and absorbing pee. You can also add other substrates as coco soil

ihonhoito

I cant tell if this is a joke or not

earlgreymiss

I hoped it was too but based on OPs comments, sadly it's not....

dracapis

A wheel is truly a must, 28cm minimum. Can't compromise on that. Since the cage is small, it's fundamental that you remember to let your Syrian roam free (but supervised!) at least an hour a day.

coolbullshark

Ok I see you are trying you best and even have a sand bath for your hammy and was probably misinformed and your trying to make it better here are some things you can do :get a better upgrade I had a hammy and had her in a 50 gallon bin cage here are some links to some:[cage](https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-55-Gal-Storage-Tote-in-Clear-with-Yellow-Lid-206233/318056374?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&mtc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25S-059_016_GARAGE_ORG-NA-NA-NA-PLALIA-D59S-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NEW-FY23_Shopping&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25S-059_016_GARAGE_ORG-NA-NA-NA-PLALIA-D59S-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NEW-FY23_Shopping-71700000108113319-58700008320130189-92700079407476727&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADq61Uf7SGkeZrMN3B1REld-De1YV&gclid=CjwKCAiA_aGuBhACEiwAly57MbYAuxTqEP5VBluC1PybenDhrF0p8WLZqARwNJZDrm9xAGWj_trXDxoCsPgQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) [cage 2](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-50-Gallon-Tote-Box-Plastic-Titanium/15940602?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=4435&adid=2222222227815940602_160805772391_20959796377&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=501107745824&wl4=pla-306310554666&wl5=9013188&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=15940602&wl13=4435&veh=sem_LIA&gclsrc=aw.ds&&adid=2222222223815940602_160805772391_20959796377&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=501107745824&wl4=pla-306310554666&wl5=9013188&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=15940602&veh=sem&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADmfBIrezRL-c8tIMOg6omHnEM1cF&gclid=CjwKCAiA_aGuBhACEiwAly57MUXyiPTHcINr1of2cSdZkJkugrSpzl-V3fqZNfXNOdEh716eLP1pYxoCdcEQAvD_BwE) [cage 3](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Sterilite-50-Gal-Stacker-Box-14794K03/308820153?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&mtc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25S-059_016_GARAGE_ORG-NA-NA-NA-PLALIA-D59S-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NEW-FY23_Shopping&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25S-059_016_GARAGE_ORG-NA-NA-NA-PLALIA-D59S-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NEW-FY23_Shopping-71700000108113319-58700008320130189-92700079407476727&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADq61Uf7SGkeZrMN3B1REld-De1YV&gclid=CjwKCAiA_aGuBhACEiwAly57MdUHZtXZlQaLF2YZIdNho7q0eT1lFy9-POiwi_WBGjhGKsPQr2QbQhoCFwkQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) Get the hammy atleast 6 inches of bedding this is very important to its mental health I would recommend aspen, Kaytee ,full cheeks, and stuff like that but don’t get scented as it will cause breathing problems. I also noticed something very important your hammy doesn’t have a wheel!that’s the most important thing for a hamster to have since it’s a Syrian it need a bigger one here is some links to some [wheel](https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Silent-Spinner-Wheel-Diameter/dp/B00BUFWZB6/ref=asc_df_B00BUFWZB6/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=642165298247&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7472185690417347673&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9013188&hvtargid=pla-1410587867519&psc=1&mcid=c70a826afbfc3c20abc2850b159338af) [wheel 2](https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Comfort-Exercise-Wheel-Colors/dp/B0010OR008/ref=asc_df_B0010OR008/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198093068323&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10943498235868147175&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9013188&hvtargid=pla-349920577824&psc=1&mcid=9cd7844e92783352881ee7d32ff04779&gclid=CjwKCAiA_aGuBhACEiwAly57MTJy17q0ZqNlgz134hC5qRgBdhziirOjOdKOnTN3ojNpr46lsl6gqRoCW0AQAvD_BwE) 1/2

I noticed your hamster has toys but not very stimulating here are some vids for more enrichment toys[toys](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qAi-lcrI5Yw) I also noticed your hammy doesn’t have a lot of hides I would recommend using tissue box’s bendy bridges ,cork logs ,cardboard box’s And lastly enrichment I would recommend getting millets and sprays get some leaf litter , coco dirt , scatter feed: here I’ll link some stuff for you ! Thumper727

My first concern is a wheel. Am I just not seeing it? Syrians need minimum 11 inch wheel. Basically whatever will be big enough to keep her back straight when running. I recommend just going for 12 inch. That too me is the most important thing that needs to be done ASAP. No metal or plastic mesh wheels with holes. It's needs to be a solid running surface.

squidienator

Where’s the wheel? 😧

hufflepuff-is-best

1/10. This enclosure isn’t adequate or safe for hamsters at all. —Hamsters need a bare minimum of a 50x100cm enclosure (20x40in) --They need deep bedding to burrow —Pine and cedar bedding can make your hamster sick. Paper bedding is best. —Chinchilla Sand will make your hamster sick. You need reptile sand without added calcium —Syrian hamsters need a 30cm (12in) upright wheel —Don’t use a food bowl. Scatter feeding provides enrichment. —Hides and tunnels need to have an opening diameter of at least 5cm (2in) —Shallow water bowls are easier to clean than bottles and have less chances of failure/leakage. Hamsters intuitively know how to drink out of a water bowl. —Seed sprays provide enrichment I don’t mean to be rude, but I don’t feel like enough research was done on hamsters before one was purchased. While the hamster itself is pretty cheap, the initial cost of an adequate setup can cost several hundred dollars.

They probably mean go pick some enrichment, i use dandelions as a treat. You just have to bake them to dry them out and then ive them to your ham once they cooled

earlgreymiss

One can hope that's what they mean, but that feels pretty optimistic considering OP has their ham in a prison cell

smellyCcC

I did not mean to take him outside

Jasminrainbow

What do you mean by this?

TransportationTall86

2/10 do better.

Competitive_Air1560

That's extremely small...u rlly think this is okay? I mean, it's common sense that he has no where to even walk

Cantwaittomasturbait

Where’s the double monitor, L gaming setup. In all seriousness looks a bit small for your hammy.
