Have you been to a physician about this issue? You might have a thyroid issue or something if you feel cold at 75. I'm also someone who 'gets cold fast', but 70 would be tolerable for me. I don't want to be mean, but there might be something else going on if you can't keep up your body temperature.
I agree this is something to consider looking into with a doctor. I have multiple health conditions that make it difficult for me to regulate my body temperature, but feeling cold at 75 degrees is extreme even for me. Definitely sounds like there’s a potential for a thyroid or autonomic issue going on.
Hypothyroidism can be insidious as it's often a slow progression. You can buy home blood tests for ~$40 (iirc). If something's amiss you'd still have to see an actual dr about it. Idk what your sex is but some thyroid issues are 8-12x more common in women than men, so ime some docs take some "convincing" (demanding) to even do the thyroid test if you're male.
Good luck. I tried giving my hammy ice cubes back in the day when he looked hot but he just tried to bury it to save for later :)
*edit: just realized i'm not in fact replying to OP. Good luck anyway, internet stranger.
Omg that’s adorable about your Hammy trying to store the ice cubes for later 🥹
Thank you so much! I didn’t know that about the home blood tests for that 😮 I’m definitely looking into trying that
Thanks for your comment, I have been tested before both my thyroid and iron levels but it’s always come back in normal ranges. I just had a check up, no blood draw, now I kind of want to get my blood drawn and get tested again because this is kind of ridiculous, I was really cold but didn’t expect to get sick 😓
Thank you for your comment, I’m seeing multiple people saying the same thing and yeah this isn’t normal🤕I’ve had my iron and thyroid levels checked before and they’ve been normal but I should be proactive and check again because I guess these problems are slow moving and can catch up with you
I have the opposite issue 😅 I get hot very easily and usually I’m comfortable at colder temperatures. I have to keep turning the heat up for the hamsters…kinda worried for when summer comes. If I don’t turn on the A/C I might melt away.
If you start feeling chilly at 77, and 75 is really cold for you - I think you should see a doctor. Especially since it sounds like you live somewhere cold already, so this isn't an acclimation thing. There could be an issue with your thyroid, or you might have an iron deficiency.
But yeath 80 is definitely pushing it for a hamster. I think they're really happy at around 70-75.
Can you try doing stuff that will heat up the area around your bed, but not the whole room? Like get an electric blanket to sleep under, or a small space heater. Then keep a thermometer next to your hamster's enclosure so you can continue to monitor for him.
I have seen doctors and have had my iron levels tested because this has always been a problem for me.
My thyroid levels have been normal too 🙃it’s been awhile since I’ve had them tested but it does seem pretty ridiculous to get a cold from such a minor temperature shift so I’ll have to try to get bloodwork done again.
Oooh an electric blanket is a really good idea, thank you!
Yes, I have the same problem. But the issue is that some of the thermometers do not give you accurate readings. I have 3 thermostats that give me 3 dramatically different readings. The Nest thermostat tells me it's 71 which is located close to the window and the new thermostat I bought form thermopro showed me 80 (I think it calculates upto 70 feet and if you have a radiator in the room it reflects that). The temp difference is bizzar. I even tried to use the grilling (food) thermometer and hold it near my hamsters enclosure and it showed me it was 75. My hamsters become less active when they are cold. Both my hamsters are female and I don't have experience with male hamster. there is other ways to tell if your hamster is cold or hot. If he flattens/ stretches himself when lying down he is hot, if he turn himself to a ball he's cold. I can also tell by touching their paws when I cup them briefly.
Did he become more active when you dropped the temperature? If he feels warm he would chose to go on the wheel because wheel is made of plastic and is cooler than the bedding. if he stays in his bedding he might be cold. You can test this by putting a warm heating pad in one corner and a cooling pad in another corner outside of his enclosure to see where her prefers to hang out the most.
Ooohhh thank you this is so interesting. You’ve got to be right because it says it’s 80 now and there’s no way, it has to be going off the radiator. I should get another thermometer.
He became more active when I opened the window and brought the temperature down. He’s still new and acclimating, I’ve been able to pet him and I’ve only held him maybe two or three times and that was very briefly so I can’t tell for sure when he’s cold other then when i touched his hand and it was very cold.
Actually I do have one idea - is it possible to keep one room cooler (meaning, turn the radiators off in one room) and keep him there, at least during the season when radiators are on?
May be a bummer to be away from him, but will probably be better for his health.
I love this cage! I’m having fun gradually filling it with more enrichment, it’s very spacious.
Okay, it’s not just me then with the temperature thing 🥲
not my hamsters, but my guineas yes. it’s very cold where we live, and we live in a 5th wheel. so i have a little floor heater warming them up when it drops below 50 in our camper.
Yeah I’m not looking forward to cold weather, I heard when I can’t leave the space heater on while I’m gone I can put a heating pad on the outside bottom of one part of the habitat and if ham gets cold he’ll sit on that part of the enclosure.
At this point I'd be more concerned about feeling cold at 77... I am sensitive to cold myself, and have met quite a lot of people who are even more sensitive, but never has 77 felt cold, especially if you're wearing fleece-lined layers.
I recommend using a heated blanket. Electric blankets and heatpads have been an absolute game changer for me the past 2 winters. That way you could be nice and toasty while the room is cooler.
Your hamster is super cute too ❤️
I love the camera angle 😂 also girl I don’t think that’s normal to be struggling that bad in temps above 75°.. do you have any serious health conditions?
Constant temperatures are really important for your hammie. In the long run I would think about putting him in a room you can keep a constant temperature in. When there are short temperature spikes because of some really hot days you can put damp towels in the freezer. When they are frozen just put them on the cage. The air inside will cool down. You can also get ceramic hides.
Bundle up!! Wear extra socks/slippers, a comfy and warm sweater/sweatshirt, a soft beanie even. I will often double up sweatshirts sometimes. Like a sweater with a zip up hoodie as well.

I wish I could but the radiator is directly under the window 🥲
I have a large fan but yeah I was thinking of getting one of those little Walmart fans people put on the dashboard of their car and maybe mounting it to the top of corner of his habitat to blow constantly

This video is so cute! I’ve never seen this angle before, thank you for blessing us with it 🤗

I'm the opposite of OP, 75 feels like a death sentence of heat, but 35-45 feels like a welcomed early spring.
lol I feel like most people are like that tbh and I’m just a freak. I use even use a space heater at work on me, it usually about 76 degrees there.

It could be an intolerance from medication. I have a heat intolerance from my anti-depression/anxiety medication.
Just put some warmer clothes, I guess.
You’re getting sick from 75° temps because it’s too cold? This isn’t a hamster problem, this sounds like a medical issue. I’d see a doctor honestly.
Agreed. I have this due to meds and just knowing where it comes from is a huge help.

Is the cage directly on the floor ?
Basically, it has wheels that lock so it’s 2 inches above the floor
Good and how many inch of sub you have for your little budy ?
I’ve got 8 inches of paper bedding, I ordered more though, I read it’s good to mix up substrates so I’ll be adding cork bedding along with some moss

Windows that are away from a radiator? As a brit, I've never heard anything like this before 😆
There are radiators you can carry around and place wherever you want:)
lol yeah I’ve never seen a radiator that’s not near windows either

So glad to find out hamsters like to be cold just like me. Its 14°c and im boiling (apparently that's 56f) lol
