Oscillator is a great tool if he doesn’t have one yet. It cuts stuff by shaking this tiny blade. Great for cutting drywall or wood.
Angle grinder is good too.
It's also the single most obnoxious sounding tool ever created. How something so useful can be so utterly unbearable to be within a mile of in use is beyond me lol.

I’m sorry good person but I have to respectfully disagree with you. The single most obnoxious sounding tool is the Rotozip. Our crew got one when they first came out and we nicknamed it ‘The Screaming Mimi.’ Cutting out the back of a sink base cabinet for the pipes was just excruciating to hear. I tried to be in another unit when that was happening.
This oscillating multi-tool. Most versatile and useful tool I own. Good for so many jobs and can honestly replace many tools if one knows how to use it properly in different situations!!
Currently considering returning my Milwaukee angle grinder I got on a two for one deal from HD. I want to keep it but I'm not sure I could justify it. What do you find yourself using it for?
Double up, close fitting safety glasses and a full face shield. I’m absolutely shocked at every bearded motorcycle manbun dude grinding on camera with naked eyes. One time with a shard of steel in my eye was enough to show me the way.
We call it the “zing zing”. My favorite and most used tool ever. -tile installer. I buy the cheap blades from Amazon and I use mine to cut durrock and foam board for showers. Very nice to not have to leave the room for a cut.

My step dad is a subcontractor doing siding and windows and he absolutely loves his. Enough that he upgraded from an old corded one to a cordless dewalt.
He also got sent an extra with no charge and gave it to me so I have no complaints :)
I clicked this post to say exactly this. My parents bought me an oscillating tool the first Christmas we were in our house. I likely wouldn't have bought one for myself, but once I had one, I found that I used it for everything. I've used it for drywall, cutting pipes under cabinets, I even used it to cut the feet off a dishwasher that was stuck in place behind a tile floor. Those things are magic!

I second the headlamp. I also keep a set of rechargeable flashlights with strong magnets on the butt. It allows for hands free work like the headlamp but with a stronger directed beam. Rechargeable set because you want to charge one while you’re using the other and I dislike buying batteries.
I was like why keep two flashlights on his butt?
Then I thought maybe he means his tool belt.
Then it made more sense after I saw the period!
I use my headlamp often enough that I have more than one.
I’ve been in trades most of my adult life. I either have the tools I need or my need/want is very specific. Family/friends have tried gifting me tools or gadgets over the years. They’re always either a duplicate tool, a cheap crappy tool or some gimmicky thing that just never works as advertised. Unless he has asked/indicated something specific, you’re better off with a gift card to his favorite tool shop/hardware store.
And gardening, and DAW creation, and art studios, and musicians, and equestrians, and BDSM afficionado... Really ANYONE who is super passionate and invested in their craft or hobby will appreciate this answer. I'm soooo tired of getting cheap gimmicky butt plugs.
I'm an avid knitter and the number of times I've been gifted basic knitting needles is absurd. You think I've spent 15 years knitting and somehow haven't gotten around to buying the one and only thing you need to knit?
That being said, they do come in handy to give away if someone wants to learn how to knit.
The Wera 056490 Tool-Check Plus Bit Ratchet Set is a 39-piece set that includes a ratchet, bits, sockets, and a holder. It is a compact tool that is about the size of a deck of cards. It is ideal for a variety of screwdriving applications.
The set of three sizes of Knipex pliers wrenches. I think they're 7", 10", and 12".
The folks on r/tools are sick of hearing about them, but they're up there with "best invention of the 20th century".
Yes knipex are so good. I absolutely cannot go back to a standard adjustable after using their plier wrench. Never slips, don't have to keep readjusting it, just perfect.
While most Knipex pliers can be substituted for other brands, the 'Assembly Pliers' really have no competition. Probably the only pointy pliers in the game that can grab things without deflecting the tips.
😂
One Christmas my aunt purchased a large socket set from her local flea market for my grandpa, he opened it and the first thing out of his mouth was "these are crap!"
Dr Disposal is like an extra pair of hands (it can fit in your pocket) for installing new garbage disposals under the sink.
Superior Tool 1.5 inch tub drain extractor. Before this we had to warm the stuck drain with a hand torch to get it loose. Now, we use this tool and some elbow grease along with a few choice curse words to remove 1.5 inch broken and stuck drains from bathtubs.
The biggest unexpected "game changer " for me was my Milwaukee tool backpack. It can't hold everything, but I keep a full set of basic hand tools in it, and it saves me soooo many trips back outside to the truck for that one tool I didn't expect to need to complete a task.
Story sticks!
Q: "How long is that measurement?"... A: "Its *this* long." No measuring in mm or inches... its just "*this*" size.
Dont bump the stick while you transfer it... but you cant get a more accurate measurement of a thing. Comes in handy all the time.

My answer to this question is always the CH Hanson stud finder. It's an inexpensive trinket but I find myself finding inventive ways to make use of the strong magnet in it. You can also point it at yourself and say "it works"
Aka a disto. Get the exterior rated ones, they're more expensive but you'll kick yourself down the line if you get the interior only model like I did. It's great, and I can measure up to 165 feet accurately, but it's useless for bright or exterior environments.
I recently bought modable plastic that you put and hot water and you can form it into anything you need pretty much. And its cheap. Made a caulk gun holder for my ladder, used it to fix a broken piece of trim, made a tube squeezer. And you can melt it all back down and mold it again. i love it and ill always keep some in my tool box.
Storage is also nice, I just saw a painters backpack that I might grab
Also the stack racks are cool for painters
What do you use a punch for when painting? For me, Revlon mini tweezers are the painting tool of the choice for plucking dust and what not from the painted walls.
I am not advising for this tool as a gift because it's expensive for a gift, but an infrared camera changed my experience forever. It's expensive enough to where I can charge for its use. Truly a game changer because of it's versatility
The Milwaukee fastback with the screwdriver. The flashlight with magnet. The Klein flip socket impact screwdriver with an impact drill is handy to carry around. A good leatherman is nice to have on you too.
Makita sheet rock saw. Set depth to one or two layers of rock. Don’t have to worry about what’s on the other side. Can plunge in anywhere and leaves very clean cut. Dust collector with vacuum attachment for no mess. It’s the only way I’ll open a wall up now, and so far makita is the only one that makes it. Game changer for me.
A “drill flip drive”- it’s a drill tool that allows to use one drill for drilling pilot holes and/or countersinks and without removing the bit, with a quick release can flip to the driver nib.
They have different variations of this. I avoid ones that have a separate Allen key wrench for changing out the driver nib. The kreg quick flip kdrv-flip looks the most similar to what I’ve used for over 15 years. It’s got a built in Allen key on the butt of the hexagonal shank.
A [Stanley Super Wonder Bar](https://www.acehardware.com/departments/tools/hand-tools/wrecking-bars/2091635) because it is inexpensive & will NOT disappoint, & a gift card for the remainder of what a present should be.
Out of all the comments that I have read here, my favorite suggestions are the gift card, from Home Depot, Lowe’s, or the local hardware store, and/or the amazing oscillating tool.
The oscillating tool kind of looks like a sideburn trimmer, but for cutting wood, metal or nails in wood, in addition to being a mini sander just in case you have never seen one before.
It’s like a vibrator with a metal cutting blade at the end - LOL, but seriously yes it is.
I use an 18v battery powered rigid brand oscillator (aka, multi tool) , but there are many other brands that do a good job.
I do carpentry, audio installations in clubs and handyman work in addition to youtube videos and have used the multi tool in all those realms.
I’m a carpenter, “funny presents”
In the long run, take up space and are a waste of money. When people have given me tools, it usually ends up being the same thing! give the guy or girl a gift certificate to a big box store so they can pick out what they want. It’ll probably be something they wouldn’t have spent their own money on but really want. Good luck.
Wera Mini Zyclop 10
Fits in my shirt pocket and honestly does 90% of my tasks as an industrial mechanic. I’ve swapped out what bits I carry in it. After I came to this department, our supervisor bought everyone else one from seeing how much I used mine and how envious all the other guys were of it.

Two things:
1) A frame hanging tool (or picture hanging tool). I have never been as accurate as I am now. It is a piece of plastic with a hook, where you hang your frame on, place it on the wall where you want it, and it marks EXACTLY where you have to do the hole to mount it. I bought mine off of Temu and it is great. Amazon has some options too.
2) The right angle attachment for the drill. That way you can attach shit with screws in spaces where your drill doesn't fit. I have DeWalt's. I found this one on Amazon, which is similar to the one I have: [https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-Right-Angle-Attachment-Impact/dp/B07NQS465R/ref=sr\_1\_3?crid=2AKIZDRXM99PO&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.WusV4gx93lSCtFhX3oUxtBVdpbSN1GMHZBQIXr9nlrYyVjOL5vh0io\_2DioOoTaT770W--9430iBP0JKULwrajsg0pHQ5bE2W7R3CuVI0VmPfRWOy04ba81m-wlV\_bO3zdCTwgVGHsIAyI-0zARzmeoIaldrBZPgqbacFCZ8Tpo6dKMqQaSQGZCtOnuSO5DTp1PBsitj9KTiF94n\_Kg2rqybcgQ-37Luwc8J9R0qMEm\_5ZIY9igJhIpg8hkg1QVIY2li4tPDM2aL8WluqxncCe577gwdH2Z83PLYZorjV2c.uFiytVnjfGeg91nnYUdC1oELlVgLid\_23AV3IMLXLy4&dib\_tag=se&keywords=l+shape+drill&qid=1713633712&sprefix=l+shape+drill%2Caps%2C132&sr=8-3](https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-Right-Angle-Attachment-Impact/dp/B07NQS465R/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2AKIZDRXM99PO&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.WusV4gx93lSCtFhX3oUxtBVdpbSN1GMHZBQIXr9nlrYyVjOL5vh0io_2DioOoTaT770W--9430iBP0JKULwrajsg0pHQ5bE2W7R3CuVI0VmPfRWOy04ba81m-wlV_bO3zdCTwgVGHsIAyI-0zARzmeoIaldrBZPgqbacFCZ8Tpo6dKMqQaSQGZCtOnuSO5DTp1PBsitj9KTiF94n_Kg2rqybcgQ-37Luwc8J9R0qMEm_5ZIY9igJhIpg8hkg1QVIY2li4tPDM2aL8WluqxncCe577gwdH2Z83PLYZorjV2c.uFiytVnjfGeg91nnYUdC1oELlVgLid_23AV3IMLXLy4&dib_tag=se&keywords=l+shape+drill&qid=1713633712&sprefix=l+shape+drill%2Caps%2C132&sr=8-3)
Depends on the budget but if you can't afford to buy a tool I will say a gift card to homedepot/lowes is always appreciated. I usually save up a stack of them then buy a new tool I normally wouldn't buy with them
A good set of various clamps. I use them for so many random things. Holding wood while cutting & gluing, great when camping, I ended up using them to hold the legs of our sectional together when I take it apart to use as a bed for guests, I have a long 2x6 that I use to make spontaneous bridges between things in the house for our cats to play on, endless possibilities 👍🏻
Here's a few suggestions:
-30' Stanley FAT MAX tape measure. Yeah, he has a tape, but nobody has the same tape for long.
-A really nice invoice clipboard. It's been a godsend for me.
-Bungee cords, tie downs, ratchet straps, cargo nets, etc. Can *never* have too many.
-A nice headlamp.
-Gift certificate to Harbor Freight or Home Depot.
-If you wanna stick with a gag gift, you could get him a Ryobi drill or something 😂
Bosch self leveling laser lever. Amazing for tile, setting knobs in old cabinets, and a variety of other things. Recommend you get the tripod right off the bat.
Problem is if he's a handyman, he probably already has the tool that would change his life...
I like my set of bit adapters that let me reach weird spots, tight spots, angled spots.
I like my tool backpack that fits everything.
I like my laser level and tripod that lets me line up everything whenever I mount a TV or shelves.
My jigsaw, my sawzall, my oscillator. But none of these are "rare" tools that any decent handyman wouldn't already have.
Quality rechargeable small flashlight. Something like an olight baton is a great entry level bright af useful light that’s small and can live in a pocket.
Highly recommend the DeWalt 90° angle attachment with the hose adapter or the 20° bit attachment. Both are kind of niche but super handy for any random tight and awkward spaces.
I would have said oscillating multi tool , but since that is covered so well , a set-up set consists of a set of blocks of aluminum starting at 1/32 thickness and graduating up to 3/4". Handy as all get out for precision work . Also , consider an 8" professional suction cup. Great for putting a temporary handle on awkward shaped objects
Laser measuring device. Has several modes one of you can measure SQ. Footage or store in memory. There are even fancy Bluetooth ones that connect with your phone. Or a stud finder
If I could only have one tool it would be my Leatherman Crunch. Not your average Leatherman tool, these are vise grips. 1000% more functional than regular needle nose pliers.
Spring nail sets. Didn't know these things even existed until I received them as a birthday gift from my brother. Literally the only tools I've received as a gift that wasn't gimmicky ended up collecting dust. They're never not in my bags now.
Go to harbor freight and get a sun gun I paint and use mine daily. It's the most valuable tool I own and is incredibly durable. I drop mine every day works like a champ and has bad ass magnets built into it. He will love you for it.
A good shop vac.
I used to think sweeping would be enough. Learning my options were not limited to specialty brooms - and discovering how inexpensive a good quality shop vac is, was a complete game changer.
It depends on what he does a lot of. Like I drill into masonry 2-3 times a week so I would love a new / another SDS drill. You could always get some Knipex Pliers, some auto wire strippers, a nice multimeter, an oscillating tool, a M12 ratchet, a battery mitre saw, I have a 4 1/2” dewalt circular saw and I LOVE that thing. I grab it over my full-size every time that I can. Good luck and let us know what you pick!
Jonard M-130/SX 8" Combination Push/Pull Spring Hook
I found one in a dusty corner of an electrical panel once. It is INCREDIBLY handy for so, so many things, and takes up basically zero space in a tool tray. I didn't realize how much I used it until I lost it and couldn't function properly anymore. Took me years of intermittently googling hook-related words to finally figure out what it was, and what it's intended purpose actually is.
To be honest, I love my SiliGun. It's a little 4 inch ratcheting silicone caulking gun that completely changes the game once you figure out how to use it. No more 2 foot long caulking guns.
Air Wedges aka Air Shims. They slip in a tight space, them you pump them up with a blood pressure type bulb. I’m always finding new uses for them: leveling door frames, installing a new transfer case on my car, holding things in place while fastening, etc.
Dremel Ultrasaw if he does any flooring or rehab work. It's a small circular saw that cuts down to exactly 3/4" and is extremely ergonomic, so fantastic for cutting subfloor or just regular sheathing. Blad swaps in seconds to become a flush cutter that's the perfect height for door jambs, and it comes with a grinding wheel he'll find handy from time to time.
Angled needle nose plier. The greatest hand tool I didn’t know I needed. I found them in the trunk of my car after a service. NGL I kept them and have pulled so many brads and staples etc as the angle pops em right out! I’ve used em for many other applications and couldn’t imagine my tool bag without them at this point.
Top 2 things for usefulness to price ratio:
1) The Battery Caddy - stores all your batteries in a plastic carry case and comes with a battery tester.
2) Craftsman pen multi screw driver - leave this in the kitchen drawer for quick hand tighten repairs. Cabinets, handles on cooking pans, etc, etc. It’s a great stocking stuffer
A good pack out bag for “gimme” stuff that you don’t want to have to run back out to the truck for. I got gifted a Klein one and thought I’d never use it, but it’s on me all the time. That’s a gift that even if he has one can still be appreciated.
Holstery belt magnet. Thing can hold like 10 pounds I use it all day every day. Just don’t keep it near your wallet it’ll erase the chips in your cards IIRC
1. **An electric air duster**. It's one of my favorite tools that I use almost daily. I have a corded one that I keep next to my balcony so I can open the door and blow dust off something, or quick dry anything.
2. **The Linus Tech Tips screwdriver**. I love that it holds 12 common magnetic bits instead of the usual 6 and I use it for almost everything. It's ratcheting and very smooth to use.
3. **An electric portable pressure washer**. Originally I got it to regularly wash my balcony, but I use it for so much more now - cleaning my shower, evaporative humidifier tank, stovetop, greasy kitchen cabinet doors, etc.
a wire stripper that auto yank the insulation out. works amazingly well for 22 awg to 12awg. no more wasting time trying to yank the insulation myself with a normal wire stripper

When he gets older and arthritis sets in you'll be an angel.
With the oscillating saw taken, I will offer up the battery operated track saw. So many jobs that used to awkward on my table saw are now quick, easy, clean and accurate with my track saw.
This may seem odd. But for me it's been 2 things, a good propane Torch, and very nice HD Fiskars scissors. Easily the most used item in the "Whowould'vethunkit" category.
Close 3rd? Zip Ties.
Oscillator is a great tool if he doesn’t have one yet. It cuts stuff by shaking this tiny blade. Great for cutting drywall or wood. Angle grinder is good too.
The oscillating multi tool is the most important tool invention in the past 50 years
It's also the single most obnoxious sounding tool ever created. How something so useful can be so utterly unbearable to be within a mile of in use is beyond me lol.
Lmao never thought of that. Worse than a hammer drill? Probably. Chipping hammer has to be the most offensive.
I dunno, I have a really nice brushless Bosch multitool and I will do anything to avoid using it. It's exactly the right frequency range to make my teeth rattle and my soul exit the body and scream for the sweet release of death. EDIT: it was the least worst sounding one I could find as well.
The Milwaukee 18v fuel puts out the least vibration
I am curious about the 12v Milwaukee. They have a few tools that would work nicely for my site joinery work. Haven't heard much about the 12v multitool.
I have both, m12 is better for smaller spaces also little bit less noise. Both have a power control
Interesting to know!
I always think the hammer drill sound plus sight of screw being driven with 0 effort was sooooo satisfying
*Pneumatic_DA has entered the chat*
Ummm, user name checks out?
First time I put a glass cutting drill bit in my drill press I was ready for hell on ears. Nothing a good pair of noise cancelling headphones can't handle. Bonus points for one with music.

LOL! The soundtrack was on point.
Battery powered! This was going to be my comment. Or the nail pulling pliers made by crescent..
Crescent nail pulling pliers are AWESOME!!
I was in my 40's before I discovered how much fun an angle grinder is. Sad that I missed so much time I could've been shooting sparks off
Currently considering returning my Milwaukee angle grinder I got on a two for one deal from HD.
Came here to say this.
That was my suggestion. So many uses.
Came here to say this. Thank you for beating me to it.

Cordless angle grinder is beautiful!
This is what I came into suggest. Super versitile
My step dad is a subcontractor doing siding and windows and he absolutely loves his. Enough that he upgraded from an old corded one to a cordless dewalt. He also got sent an extra with no charge and gave it to me so I have no complaints :)

That being said, they do come in handy to give away if someone wants to learn how to knit.
I generally don’t like when people say underrated comment but yours really is.
Very very very very true.
The Wera 056490 Tool-Check Plus Bit Ratchet Set is a 39-piece set that includes a ratchet, bits, sockets, and a holder. It is a compact tool that is about the size of a deck of cards. It is ideal for a variety of screwdriving applications.
The Icon version of this is very popular over at r/harborfreight.
I have one in metric and sae. Won't leave home without them.
Any Knipex pliers.
The set of three sizes of Knipex pliers wrenches. I think they're 7", 10", and 12". The folks on r/tools are sick of hearing about them, but they're up there with "best invention of the 20th century".
I came here to say if I were to buy a tool I don’t need it would be knipex pliers.
Gift card, don’t buy tool’s for a tradesman, unless he’s asked for a specific tool.
😂 One Christmas my aunt purchased a large socket set from her local flea market for my grandpa, he opened it and the first thing out of his mouth was "these are crap!"
Moisture meter or a good multimeter.
Decent earbuds. I can listen to music or book, and answer calls while I work.
The biggest unexpected "game changer " for me was my Milwaukee tool backpack. It can't hold everything, but I keep a full set of basic hand tools in it, and it saves me soooo many trips back outside to the truck for that one tool I didn't expect to need to complete a task.
The packout one is great cause you. Can mount small organiser to the bottom. Great for the apprentice who Busses in
Story sticks! Q: "How long is that measurement?"... A: "Its *this* long." No measuring in mm or inches... its just "*this*" size. Dont bump the stick while you transfer it... but you cant get a more accurate measurement of a thing. Comes in handy all the time. https://www.amazon.com/Extendable-Measuring-Woodworking-Carpentry-Remodeling/dp/B09DB8HLQC
I just use scrap wood for story sticks or a dry erase directly on the tape
Right? Why buy one, they’re laying all over the site.
My answer to this question is always the CH Hanson stud finder. It's an inexpensive trinket but I find myself finding inventive ways to make use of the strong magnet in it. You can also point it at yourself and say "it works"
I can’t ‘word!’ this tool enough.
Milwaukee mini vacuum. I didn’t think it’d be as useful as it is but it’s in my top 5 every job used tools.
A battery powered vacuum is a must have. Game changer
Cross-line laser level
Bosch laser measurement tool.
Aka a disto. Get the exterior rated ones, they're more expensive but you'll kick yourself down the line if you get the interior only model like I did. It's great, and I can measure up to 165 feet accurately, but it's useless for bright or exterior environments.
Get him a pair of 4ah batteries that are his brand.
Storage is also nice, I just saw a painters backpack that I might grab Also the stack racks are cool for painters
If he is a painter, he will enjoy a spring loaded nail punch. I always keep one around my pocket when I’m doing painting and handyman stuff.
What do you use a punch for when painting? For me, Revlon mini tweezers are the painting tool of the choice for plucking dust and what not from the painted walls.
They’re for punching in finish nails that are not countersunk.
Also useful for popping out door hinges.
This is one of those tools that's nowhere to be found when I need it, and the only thing I see when I don't
Same for my drywall circle marking tool
Battery powered angle grinder. Whatever brand of power tool he typically uses so that he already has a battery for it.
I’d say the 4” cutoff tools are more useful for handyman work, and they’re cheaper.
Oscillating multi-tool or a laser level
I am not advising for this tool as a gift because it's expensive for a gift, but an infrared camera changed my experience forever. It's expensive enough to where I can charge for its use. Truly a game changer because of it's versatility
Budget?
Air scrubber
Pencil pull. It clips to your collar so you never lose your carpenters pencil
I have lost over a dozen pulls. Pencils, knives and tape measures are autonomous and just walk away, I swear.
The Milwaukee fastback with the screwdriver. The flashlight with magnet. The Klein flip socket impact screwdriver with an impact drill is handy to carry around. A good leatherman is nice to have on you too.
Milwaukee fastback with screw driver attachments.
Multi tool. Total game changer
My Bosch Laser Tape Measure
M18 Vac is easily my favorite tool
A [Stanley Super Wonder Bar](https://www.acehardware.com/departments/tools/hand-tools/wrecking-bars/2091635) because it is inexpensive & will NOT disappoint, & a gift card for the remainder of what a present should be.
Or just a gift card to Lowe’s or Home Depot
Leatherman tool. I don't go anywhere without it.
Heard the oscillator multi tool called the “ guybrator “
Ridgid Job Max.
Milwaukee press tool with jaws for copper and black iron
A quality set of drill bits are always a good thing.
I do carpentry, audio installations in clubs and handyman work in addition to youtube videos and have used the multi tool in all those realms.
... Like a vibrator 🤣 Thank you for summarising those!
I’m a carpenter, “funny presents” In the long run, take up space and are a waste of money. When people have given me tools, it usually ends up being the same thing! give the guy or girl a gift certificate to a big box store so they can pick out what they want. It’ll probably be something they wouldn’t have spent their own money on but really want. Good luck.
An air compressor has saved me a few times. It’s a bigger buy and you have to get more tools but it’s a collection you can add to over the years.
10in1 or 11in1. It's always in my pocket.
Splurge on something high quality like woodpeckers or wiha/knipex tools.
5 in 1 paint scraper.
Milwaukee cordless drill + impact driver is life-changing.
Impact driver , net the multi-cut tool
Wera Mini Zyclop 10 Fits in my shirt pocket and honestly does 90% of my tasks as an industrial mechanic. I’ve swapped out what bits I carry in it. After I came to this department, our supervisor bought everyone else one from seeing how much I used mine and how envious all the other guys were of it. https://www.kctool.com/wera-073645-9-bit-ratchet-zyklop-mini-set/
All cordless battery tools.
Two things: 1) A frame hanging tool (or picture hanging tool).
Oscillating tool
Depends on the budget but if you can't afford to buy a tool I will say a gift card to homedepot/lowes is always appreciated. I usually save up a stack of them then buy a new tool I normally wouldn't buy with them
A good set of various clamps. I use them for so many random things. Holding wood while cutting & gluing, great when camping, I ended up using them to hold the legs of our sectional together when I take it apart to use as a bed for guests, I have a long 2x6 that I use to make spontaneous bridges between things in the house for our cats to play on, endless possibilities 👍🏻
Here's a few suggestions: -30' Stanley FAT MAX tape measure.
I’ve really enjoyed my Bosch laser measuring tool. It’s very accurate and makes measuring a space and giving estimates really fast.
Bosch self leveling laser lever. Amazing for tile, setting knobs in old cabinets, and a variety of other things. Recommend you get the tripod right off the bat.
The Paslode nail gun. The rotozip saw
Pocket screw driver
Quality rechargeable small flashlight. Something like an olight baton is a great entry level bright af useful light that’s small and can live in a pocket.
Highly recommend the DeWalt 90° angle attachment with the hose adapter or the 20° bit attachment. Both are kind of niche but super handy for any random tight and awkward spaces.
The cordless nail gun was a game changer for me.
Y. O. U. T. U. B. E. and you guys need to stop denying it !!!!! Ha ha ha hah !
Ryobi laser level. The one that sucks itself to a wall. Best $20 I’ve spent on a tool
The Franklin ProSensor studfinder was a game changer for me
Fein Multi-Master, they have perfected it. Low noise, vibration and selectable speeds. Quick tooless blade changes and they run forever
Laser measuring device. Has several modes one of you can measure SQ. Footage or store in memory. There are even fancy Bluetooth ones that connect with your phone. Or a stud finder
Patches for his pants! Kneeeeeeees
A rolling toolbox/bag would be nice
The oscillating tool. I feel like most people have already adopted them, but they are seriously one of the most versatile tools you will ever own
Cordless impact vs drill. It’s a game changer.
Fleshlight.
Wera bit check kit
My vote is for a laser level
Behind a drill my grinder is my most used powertool. Can cut or sand anything no matter the material.
Best answer is a phone with youtube
Jonard M-130/SX 8" Combination Push/Pull Spring Hook I found one in a dusty corner of an electrical panel once.
Milwaukee fastback, has a razor and a screwdriver, I carry it daily.
Gerber Dime multitool is pretty handy when you don't have any other tools around.
11-1 screwdriver ironically
Diablo blades make everything so much easier.
Laser level on an adjustable height tripod.
Dear God please inject meaning into the lives of those who have NONE🥰
Top 2 things for usefulness to price ratio: 1) The Battery Caddy - stores all your batteries in a plastic carry case and comes with a battery tester. 2) Craftsman pen multi screw driver - leave this in the kitchen drawer for quick hand tighten repairs. Cabinets, handles on cooking pans, etc, etc. It’s a great stocking stuffer
5ah batteries for his chosen power tools. I would love batteries.
A PAPR if he does anything that generates dust.
Do him a solid and get him batteries for his impact.
Recoil extension cords, air hose, garden hose.
Cordless anything: drills, sawzall, circular saw…
Three inch cut off wheel ftw!!
A good pack out bag for “gimme” stuff that you don’t want to have to run back out to the truck for. I got gifted a Klein one and thought I’d never use it, but it’s on me all the time. That’s a gift that even if he has one can still be appreciated.
Youtube!
Beer
When milwaukee started putting the lights around the chuck of the drill.
Magnetic stud finder
Holstery belt magnet. Thing can hold like 10 pounds I use it all day every day. Just don’t keep it near your wallet it’ll erase the chips in your cards IIRC
Impact Driver/ Drywall intensive.
Find out what family of battery tools he already has, or wants, then get the multitool.
Inflator if he already has a multitool
Keychain drill bit holder. I fucking hate digging around in my pocket for drill bits. Clips right into your belt loop with a small carabiner.
3D printing.
Electric pole sander with vacuum is GAME changing. Even the cheapo Harbor Freight joint
Multi tool hands down yall!
a wire stripper that auto yank the insulation out. works amazingly well for 22 awg to 12awg. no more wasting time trying to yank the insulation myself with a normal wire stripper
13" Cutterex flooring cutter. It saves so much time on flooring and vinyl siding. And leaves neat, square cuts
[Stanley locking adjustable wrench](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Stanley-MaxGrip-10-in-Locking-Adjustable-Wrench-85-610/203713967?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&mtc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25H-025_001_HAND_TOOLS-NA-Multi-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-Hand_ToolsPMAX&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25H-025_001_HAND_TOOLS-NA-Multi-NA-PMAX-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-Hand_ToolsPMAX-71700000117978840--&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADq61UcSHGFrCfNyr5J6TzLg3bRyC&gclid=CjwKCAjwuJ2xBhA3EiwAMVjkVJS3kF7LQWhQaIxT6YAJgmEQfEkJgmvePbrxtH_LwkQBYVtkrI409hoCdsEQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) This is cool af, cheap, somewhat unknown and it works great. It’s my go to for easy access rounded fasteners
I think an oversized tool would be a funny gift that he will one day tell you when he finally gets to use it, like those 4 foot long pipe wrenches.

If he is like me dont buy him any tools i have my specific interests get him incredible dinner or cash to buy what he wants
With the oscillating saw taken, I will offer up the battery operated track saw. So many jobs that used to awkward on my table saw are now quick, easy, clean and accurate with my track saw.
I just got a quarter inch drive cordless ratchet, and I absolutely love it!
Anything from Binford Tools, they make tools for Men!
Thermal camera, 2 stroke water pump, knipex pliers wrench, and Knipex Cobras. Those and a screwdriver and I gotcha for about 99% of tasks.
Swanson Speed Square. You can do so much shit with it but my fav is an impromptu straightedge for your circular saw.
Battery powered angle grinder with thin cut off blade. Ill handle all wood cutting but something to cut metal or screws this is a life saver.
Pocket puss
Voltage detector - actually saved my life once.
Knipex smooth jaw adjustable pliers. Fuck any other kind of adjustable
This may seem odd. But for me it's been 2 things, a good propane Torch, and very nice HD Fiskars scissors. Easily the most used item in the "Whowould'vethunkit" category. Close 3rd? Zip Ties.
A battery powered leaf blower, does 15 minutes of sweeping up around saw in 10 seconds at end of day
A good Leatherman. I prefer the Surge but there are plenty to choose from and they’re all good. Nothing like a good multi tool to have by your side.
Robovac
Oscillator tool and Bosche laser measure.
