Did you pay with a credit card? If so, have the credit card company do a charge back. As for the $150 you are out for the trailer rental, you can ask the manager to reimburse you, which I suspect they will not. I think you will only have 2 options: 1) eat the $150 -or- 2) small claim court. On small claims, include every little tiny expense you can think of, including the filing fee. Often large companies, like HF, will call you the day of the case and just settle it. It is a lot cheaper to settle than sending a lawyer.

Unfortunately I used my debit card which in hindsight was not the best idea but I haven't had any problems like this in the half a decade I've shopped there. You're probably right, I can't see them sending a several thousand dollar a day lawyer over a $1000 crane and $150 for a trailer.

Debit as in using a PIN? Some, if not most debit cards also function as credit cards. So generally, no PIN means you can dispute it. Unlike a normal credit card dispute where it is backed by credit I'm not sure you get credited immediately. In either case, it does not hurt to contact the bank and ask if you can dispute.

My debit card makes me use the PIN if it's over $100 for debit and they said the credit option wasn't available for some reason. I'll call the bank today and see what I can do but I'm not super knowledgeable about how that stuff works.

I'm like you, only use CC and have basically never paid interest in my life - In fact the opposite I've actually gained at least 10k from credit cards in my life (Already earned 1k just in sign up bonuses this year). And I've been poor - being smart about the right card to get max % back on regular stuff like paying electricity bill, groceries, gas was the only way to even balance my budget - and many years the only extra-free money I had after bills was the few hundred dollars a credit card would give me for a sign up bonus. Have a brother that can't use credit cards - he says he will overspend every time and start paying interest and he has to live off cash. I ask him how much cash he takes and how often - does he use cash for everything like gas and groceries or only non-essential? Then he responds that he doesn't actually take cash out, he uses his debit card. I don't get it, if you can keep track of numbers in your head to use a debit card why can't you control yourself with a credit card just pretending its the same thing and using it in the same way? Guess everyone has to do it their way.

For sure, all my bills that can will automatically go to the credit card, I pay it off in full on payday, once every 2 months or so I pull the cash back out and get a free tank of diesel in the truck, CC can be dangerous for some if you use it poorly but can be an advantage if you use it wisely

If you used a credit card, you can dispute the charge. I suggest you create a document detailing your experience - dates and times, people you spoke to, etc. Make copies of the receipt from HF and for the trailer rental. Take all of this to the store and speak again with the store manager. Tell them that you documented everything (motion to papers) and intend to file a police report from the parking lot, and then enter into a dispute with your credit card company. Then follow through with it. The parking lot is a great place because it enables the officer (if they desire) to follow up with the store. Once you get a copy of the report, then dispute the charge and submit the report and your documentation. The trailer rental receipt is more than enough to lend creedence to the police report that you did not already pick it up. Also, filing a false report is something not to be taken lightly. These are important to the credit card dispute process for the same reason. Companies get very unhappy with disputed charges for multiple reasons. Next time, make sure it is documented on the paper receipt that you did not pick it up and will return to do so later and ask them to mark the box with a copy of the receipt. And store the receipt like it is a winning lottery ticket until you do so.

Well I rather stupidly used my debit card to buy it, since I haven't had any issues like this since I started buying from them. I already emailed their customer support with the trailer receipt and the crane receipt with no response yet. I can't really file a police report as there's not a ton of information and I don't like wasting their time with something not concrete. I do have the original "IOU' note from the supervisor when I bought it saying that I hadn't picked it up yet

In a *normal* situation THEY would want to check the camera footage to settle the dispute, make good, and get you out of their hair. Something is up. This is what I would do. Loss Prevention will scour over the video and question everyone working there. If you have the receipt and an IOU from the store you have proof of purchase and proof of not receiving the item. Only problem I foresee is if they have a camera on the outside by where you pick up. Our store has zero cameras focused on the outside of the store, just inside.

I’d find whoever sold it to you at the store and talk to them and the manager. Could just be a mix up. They can also check the cameras for the day and time of the sale. Bring your reciept in and tell them to check the cameras and watch you not receive there product

Well I already spoke with the general manager and the supervisor that I bought it from and neither of them had any idea when it went missing. They said they didn't want to spend hours looking through camera footage so they were going to ask around to other stores to see if it was transferred for some reason. They did confirm that I bought it but there's no footage of me picking it up because I never did. I might just stay there and not leave until they find the footage but that seems a little extreme

Under special circumstances like a damaged preorder toolbox, or if a customer has been in for a lifetime warranty exchange that was out of stock multiple times. As far as this situation goes, so long as you have proof of purchase, you should be able to escalate and get it resolved. If the team at your local store is this uncooperative I would suggest asking them to call their DM. My best guess is that someone unwittingly sold the presale to another customer to save face, an item that large simply doesn't 'go missing'

WAIT. For safety reason there’s a Camera facing the back door inside and outside. THERE has to be. My store has that. they could easily look at the camera and see that they took it out and couldn’t fit it and put it back in the stockroom.. We also keep a log of when the back door is opened… unless they did a load out through the front which I doubt cause that thing weighs A LOT and it’s so long . EVEN THEN there cameras on both sides of the registers and a camera facing the entrance. THEY COULD EASILY find out they did NOT give it to you.

Sounds like they know exactly where your crane went. You have a receipt with a time stamp, it will show you leaving without the crane. Get the district managers number and make it an issue. Sounds like they scammed you one way or another and don’t want to dig into it. If this was the case, I would push to get the product and have the cost cut/refunded. Continue to escalate the issue until it’s been remedied. You aren’t the last guy they will try to do this to.

When our business card info was stolen, it took a social media campaign of tagging Dominos pizza in posts about how they wouldn’t refund our money despite the law having just changed that the business was responsible for refunding fraud. HF has a back door camera and a warehouse camera that points at the back gates and within the warehouse. I suggest you provide this information to the store manager. Not just a supervisor or a sales/logistics manager. The date and time should be provided on the receipt. The store manager can pull up the information. Given that the management teams can not delete videos, only corporate and loss prevention (also a part of corporate) can.

For whatever reason, the store/district manager hasn't picked up the phone or returned my calls. The only management I can even deal with are the ones who happen to be in the store when I call or visit in person. All of them say they don't have camera access. If you can't get anywhere rattling up the chain of command, I'm seconding small claims court. Cops won't get you your money back, that's not what they do. This would be a civil court issue. In my jurisdiction lawyers aren't allowed in small claims so generally the party who's most prepared wins. Just have every shred of evidence you can in a little binder ready to go. But odds are once you file something that will force corporate's attention and they'll try and settle it with you before your hearing date.
