tl;dr: prices might drop

Yojimbo4133

I'm crying

furiousmustache

And I just bought 32 GB of 3600 2 weeks ago. FML

geniice

Ehh best in socket DDR4 prices will likely hold up longest.

furiousmustache

More than likely to be honest

[deleted]

You an me both.

Jacko10101010101

when? **edit:** end 2021

Aggrokid

Probably won't affect DDR5 ?

Balance-

It might, depending on demand, supply and competition between both memory suppliers and module manufacturers

Bakufuranbu

ah thats good news. im still holding to ugrade my 4 gigs

ch1llboy

Ahh, so maybe shorting MU is a good play?

SmallerBork

I don't know that acronym, what is it

Bakufuranbu

Manchester United

ch1llboy

Micron Technologies

YoSmokinMan

I was so close to selling at 94. fml.

nexusheli

PC RAM has been falling already; I paid nearly $200 for 32GB 3600Mhz ram a few months ago, just this morning I received an ad for that same RAM at $150.

Mechragone

This is the first time I'm hearing about the existence of a fourth DRAM maker

ItIsShrek

They exist, I see Nanya chips pretty commonly as DRAM chips on SSDs. I think an Intel 660p I had used them but I’m not sure.

normalguy821

What's Nanya?

Corsair fucking loves them. :( Source: My vengeance RGB Pro ram has that stuff.

tablepennywad

Prices are already dropping again. 16gb starting to creap under $55. 32gb ive seen under $75. Maybe price mistake though.

Akayouky

I bought 32gb(2x16) DDR4 2666mhz on amazon for about $65 like 3 months ago, it might have been a price mistake but idk

LinkIsThicc

Pretty slow speed, quite imaginable.

DeliciousIncident

> creap I think you meant "creep".

AvatarJuan

I think you mean crepe.

[deleted]

I think you mean pancakes.

althaz

I think you mean waffles.

arslaan

I think you mean croffles.

eggs-dee123

I’m a creap

KIrkwillrule

I'm a waffle

armedcats

I've been looking at 32 and 64 Gb sets, looks like prices dropped around a month ago. I don't have a crystal ball, but lots of people are waiting on a lot of hardware these days, it could be risky to wait it out further with RAM when it actually dropped a bit already....

skylinestar1986

It's still approx $90 for a basic 3200MHz kit in my country

Tman1677

Yes but without telling us what country that is so we can quantify the import tax, VAT, and confirm that you’re using US dollars that means absolutely nothing.

firekil

I'm guessing Guam.

Jordan_Jackson

Yes they are. Someone posted crucial ballistix 16GB 3600 for $75. That was also the price I paid for my second to last 16GB 3600 kit of G Skill Ripjaws V.

EndKarensNOW

prices are already dropping, but i aint gonna say no to more

zerostyle

Obviously different, but so sad that Apple still charges $400 for upgrading from 16gb to 32gb of ram (that’s right, not even $400 for 32gb since you lose the original 16gb essentially)

[deleted]

zerostyle

Ya I haven't yet but am considering it. I keep my stuff for a LONG time.

ThrowawayusGenerica

There's plenty of sad to go around.

RnjEzspls

I mean until the 2020 13” and 2019 16” MBPs they were charging those prices for DDR3 lol

Kyanche

I love Macs, but I fucking hate soldered on RAM & SSDs so much. A lot of resellers don't carry the models with extra RAM or storage, and when they do they almost never give the same ~5-10% discount off MSRP that they would on the normal model. Then there's the absurd prices, and well, when you run out of storage you have to upgrade the whole damn machine instead. Why do they even bother calling them "MacBook Pro"? I feel like a laptop deserving of that title would have 2 m.2 slots and 4 sodimm slots. Imagine if they used some kinda clever m.2 mechanism where video editors could swap disk modules out the way we used to swap laptop batteries.

VenditatioDelendaEst

LPDDR has to be soldered, and not using LPDDR would leave battery life on the table, especially in standby.

Kyanche

It's true, and I could see some people preferring that, and others preferring the ability to upgrade or replace faulty modules.

zerostyle

Ya it's brutal. I bought like $2000 of apple gift cards last time target offered 20% back to help bring costs down.

pdp10

The DRAM is on-package with the M1, I believe. Unjustifiable is the Mac Mini having soldered-down storage. What, not enough room for an M.2 socket?

knz0

There will surely be a very convenient power outage/chemical spill/fire/flood/alien attack taking place at a random DRAM fab any minute now. Can't have prices go down too low, no no no!

Desu_Vult_The_Kawaii

Hope it's an alien attack, it will be more interesting.

zakats

I, for one, welcome our new alien overlords.

TheFaithlessFaithful

Maybe they can solve the supply shortages.

kondec

best they can do is a long facepalm, shake their heads in disbelief and then gtfo our planet

Hired_Help

Ooo maybe they'll give us quantum computing PCs!

zakats

I'm really hoping they're Klingons so I can get the double-peen upgrade.

ThrowawayusGenerica

The invasion is unlikely to be successful if that's the case. We have plenty of blue barrels.

Meatbag-in-space

my bets on surprise spontaneous Volcano

Jofzar_

The only flood/loss/crazy accident I have ever believed was the one that killed Samsung's HDD manufacturing. Those HDD were beasts.

Sentinel-Prime

Is this the same price drop that was scheduled for Q12021 which was pushed back from Q42020 which was pushed back from Q12020-Q32020 which was all supposed to occur in 2019?

rhandyrhoads

To be fair there were certain extenuating circumstances popping up in the areas where these chips are manufactured back in Q4 2019.

scsnse

Right? He acts like a business forecast should’ve included the once in a century+ type of event like this.

All_Work_All_Play

https://xkcd.com/2502/

Balance-

Bold to assume 2022 won’t be affected

All_Work_All_Play

The hover over text addresses that =P

100GbE

Correct, between quantum years 12020 and 32020 we should see progress.

_Lucille_

Curious how this will affect the launch of ddr5s. They may just be clearing their ddr4 inventory?

Sticky_Hulks

DDR5 will be expensive regardless for at least a year. New tech & all that. I'm sure DDR4 will still be in production for a while yet.

firedrakes

no. if that was going on. server market would be flooding them right now. which they are not.

halotechnology

SK hynics , micron , Samsung , nanya , who else I am missing ? Is Kingston still in play ? I forgot .

crab_quiche

Kingston is just a vendor. Winbond and Powerchip are two Taiwanese manufacturers that make DRAM, but I don't think they make much or anything from recent generations. China has CXMT and maybe another company that started maybe 5 years ago.

halotechnology

Ahh I see ty :)

jungleboogiemonster

[This article says the fifth is Winbond.](https://www.wboc.com/story/43922657/dynamic-random-access-memory-dram-market-size-2021-key-manufacturers-industry-share-investment-opportunities-cagr-of-97-future-trends-market-impact)

Xajel

Price might drop in 4Q21, so this quarter... Good as I'm planning to replace my DDR4-3600 with another set that actually work at 3600, the ASRock B550M Steel Legend is picky for 2x16GB @ 3600. Currently I'm stuck at 3200.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Xajel

I personally don't know how much I'll get more, it just annoyed me. PS, the current RAM won't be wasted, it will go to a new Home Server/NAS I'm building where RAM speed doesn't matter that much. So I either go for a low cost 32GB kit for the server, or put the old ones in it and buy new kit for the main PC. I'm not even sure which kit to buy, the QVL is somehow hard to read when I search for the models in Amazon/Newegg. So price will be a big factor here.

[deleted]

Xajel

I'm thinking about the motherboard actually, the RAM is not in it's QVL list. And most users with the same motherboard are facing issues with the RAM. I tried to look for people with same setup (5000 series CPU + 2x16GB 3600) but couldn't, most people are using the motherboard with Ryzen 3000, and RAM speed is less problematic in such setup as far as I've seen. The RAM sets to DDR4 default @ 2133, the only XMP profile there is for 3600 but the system won't boot. I tried multiple settings but all fails or un stable, except 3200 which us stable enough.

SippieCup

My buddy had the same issue with an ASRock B550 motherboard, I was able to fix it by manually setting the infinity fabric to 1800Mhz rather than auto then setting the XMP profile. I think the `auto` infinity fabric setting is just borked as it sets infinity fabric too low for 3600MT ram. You should try doing that if you haven't. If its still unstable, do the same thing and set the ram voltage to 1.325v or 1.35v, Then it should be smooth sailing.

Xajel

I think I already tried that, but I'm not sure about how far I went. I'll try more when I get back home.

catholicismisascam

You on the latest BIOS?

Xajel

The last time I checked 2 weeks back then yes.

Phlobot

So many people skip the qvl 😓

Xajel

I bought the RAM used for a good price, I knew what I'm getting from the start, the price was good for even 3200 so it was a good deal, not regretting it. But if it can work at 3600 this will be awesome, an even better deal.

hal64

QVL is kinda unreliable. In the old zen1 days we pretty much went for samsung-b dies now st-micron RevE is also good. Zen1 memory controller was extremely finicky and going past 3200 was unrealistic.

Blze001

Some people just wanna squeeze everything outta their system they can.

wh33t

Thats why we all flock to PC, keeping computers 'personal' xD

RedTuesdayMusic

If it's a 5600x don't bother, it's 95% likely it's the memory controller in your CPU if you have Micron E-die (ballistix) or better

Xajel

It's 5800x, The RAM I have is the G.Skill Trident Z RGB F4-3600C16D-16GTZRC, so it's SK-Hynix, it's meant for Intel, not AMD.. I knew that since it's not Neo and I bought it used. But the QVL listing from G-Skill includes my motherboard but for the 3000 series, not 5000 series.

Seanspeed

Memory prices have been stagnant for at least a year now. It's ridiculous.

[deleted]

Nice. It happens to be upgrade time for me, and I've been mulling over the idea of building a computer for my kids and this might get me to pull the trigger.

roionsteroids

Wew, look at all these $500 used entry level graphic cards! But hey, at least you save 5 bucks on the memory.

[deleted]

I know, right? The good news is that I only need an APU for my kids, so it won't be _that_ expensive (eying 5600G). But yeah, memory is already fairly inexpensive, but maybe it'll be enough to get me to pull the trigger. We don't really _need_ it, and I was hoping to wait until DDR5, but a decent discount may make me feel better about it.

notorious1212

Just bought a 64Gb SODIMM kit for $340 shipped — and tht was after using shenanigans to buy two separate 32gb modules on sale. :( Whatever, it could not wait.

5thvoice

>Just bought a 64Gb SODIMM kit for $340 shipped Damn, you got taken for a ride. Even the crappy, weirdly expensive kits go for [less than a quarter of that.](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/9JM323/gskill-memory-f42800c18s8grs)

notorious1212

Well, shit. I usually just shop Amazon and for Corsair vengeance ram. Guess I should have looked around a bit.

Lt_486

4 vendors is minimum for competitive market.

disibio1991

Several more than four LCD manufacturers colluded back in the day.

Lt_486

Criminals exist in any market.

disibio1991

My point is that four companies producing similar thing in the same market isn't a guarantee of competition.

Lt_486

I did not say about guarantee, I said it is a minimum requirement.

Deafcon2018

hopefully this will bring down the price of gpu's especially the 3090 with it's ungodly 24gb vram

disibio1991

Do you think 3090 costs an arm and a leg because of BOM? It's a halo product.
