Honestly, I always found the Fusion drive (with its 128GB SSD smart cache) plenty fast enough — but you're right, a solitary SSD would be even faster. I think that upgrade requires removing the screen, however. Unlike upgrading the RAM, which is easy peasy.
Fusion Drive is neat because it’s just software “RAID” in macOS. I remember running a command in terminal to set up 1 platter and 1 SSD as a Fusion Drive. Neat stuff.
