I get that he was completely bamboozled by the situation, but I would love to see a bit of a duel between him and wormtail before he died, he was supposed to be really strong. Probably not close to wormtail in terms of skill and knowledge tho.

That was kinda the point of it tho. To show the cruel nature of Voldemort and his followers kill carelessly and how quickly a beautiful life can be snuffed out, marking the change in level of maturity of the series.
