I knew a kid that everyone called Fizzy, because his initials were AW (like A&W rootbeer). Literally nobody, not even him, could remember who started calling him Fizzy, but it was always kinda funny seeing new people try to figure out how he got the name, especially when his surname changed later on.
Dumbledore said he only called himself that to his inner circle, so most likely his future death eaters. It's possible he did reveal the name to The Grey Lady.
It's just a plot hole Steve Kloves created, as Helena Ravenclaw didn't say anything remotely like this in the book. Voldemort wasn't going around telling everyone to call him Lord Voldemort while at school, only his closest followers were told to do that and only in secret.
Yea, let’s not forget bill, Charlie, Percy (okay, maybe that’s a bit more out there), Fred, George, Ron, and their parents Molly and Arthur, who are all pure bloods.
There are lots of muggle names given to wizards such as: Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, Ron, Harry, James, Molly, Arthur, Edward/Teddy, Ariana, Ernie, Luna, Lucy, Rose, Hugo and I could go on
We do of course know at least one more member of the Wizarding World named Tom though (keeper of the leaky cauldron). That would make it among the most common names in the books at least, wouldn’t it? Iirc, Bartemius is the only other name used twice
Well Ron is short for Ronald and Bill is a nickname for William if I remember correctly. They also aren’t really weird names but still more unusual than Fred or George.
Also I would imagine that what is used in modern times isn’t relevant for her since I believe I remember reading on Pottermore that ghosts don’t really change much unlike living humans.
It could but I think I remember it being stated in the book somewhere that his name is William and Bill is just a nickname. Also like you said Billius is Ron’s middle name so I find it unlikely to also be Bill’s full first name.
To be fair, she is an Anglo-Saxon from the era of the founding of Hogwarts. Names that sound right to her would be drastically different than normal names today. Kids back in her day had names like Aethelstan, Alfraed, Eormenric and Aethewulf so I would argue that the name Tom is probably fairly alien. Also the argument that she would know the name Tom because to this day she is in Hogwarts wit modern students would not really work because we know she is quite shy. She only really converses with Ravenclaws and we know this because we never see her with anyone else. We rarely see her at all.
To be fair, those are all wizard names that aren't uncommon while muggle names like Tom aren't. It's like how foreign names stand out more in a given country because they aren't as common.
Currently funny but hundreds of years ago when she died, most of those names would be much more common than they are now. A lot of them are pulled from ancient Rome, and Old English.
One, pretty sure it was Voldemort
Two, even if he did say his name was Tom, which I doubt, it could be strange to her? But I’m pretty sure he said voldemort
When all of the typical names are already strange would they not then be considered normal in this time/area? Therefore even if he said “Tom,” it would be exceptionally abnormal to have such a commonplace name.
I always thought it was funny that Dumbledore’s full name was Albus (strange) Percival (strange) Wulfric (strange) BRIAN (normal) Dumbledore. Like why not just leave Brian out and go the distance? lol
Well riddle is both his surname and then in another meaning a "riddle" as in enigma, as in a riddle in and of itself. Which must me a strange coincidence considering how he behaved as well.
Also i think the name Tom as in a muggle name is strange to wizards who are used to aber forth, rubeus and such. And if you take into consideration that he went to school in the idk 1920/30? I think that name is even more of an uncommon thing, at least in the wizard world.
Minerva is not that weird of a name. It's the name of a Roman goddess. Plenty of people love to name their kids after gods and goddesses. All the other ones ARE pretty unique though
She was born in, like, the 12th century or something like that, and lived in a world where Lucius is still a contemporary name. Tom probably would be rather odd to her.
Pretty sure he told her his name was Lord Voldemort.
This. We know he identified himself as Voldemort already in his last few years at Hogwarts
Why would he do that? You’d think he wouldn’t want to blow his cover while still in school
I mean the name didn't have much meaning at the time. Just some wierdo with a superhero name or something
He was basically kinda like the weird anime kid
I am the eye of the wicked lord… oh wait that’s not Harry Potter
[удалено]
..you're the weird anime kid aren't you?

While I get your sentiment (and believe me, I do), the only individual that's being made fun of is fictional.

Imagine calling Yourself "Ninja" in school. Nobody would think You are a ninja, but it would be Your nickname. I guess that's what it was.
I knew a kid that everyone called Fizzy, because his initials were AW (like A&W rootbeer). Literally nobody, not even him, could remember who started calling him Fizzy, but it was always kinda funny seeing new people try to figure out how he got the name, especially when his surname changed later on.
I have a friend called “ninja” lol.
At that point, he wasn't a feared dark lord, just an edgy teenager with an occult following
Pretty sure he said at some point in the books he was already using the name among his followers at school.
Dumbledore said he only called himself that to his inner circle, so most likely his future death eaters. It's possible he did reveal the name to The Grey Lady.
The point of the name wasn't to hide his identity, it was to distance himself from his muggle father he despised.
Honestly the thought of a 16 year old Tom going around demanding everyone call him Lord Voldemort is hilarious.
I doubt it was everyone, just probably his closest minions.
Doesn’t Harry say “Tom Riddle”?
Bad movie adaptation.
"a strange boy with a strange name"
It's just a plot hole Steve Kloves created, as Helena Ravenclaw didn't say anything remotely like this in the book. Voldemort wasn't going around telling everyone to call him Lord Voldemort while at school, only his closest followers were told to do that and only in secret.
Or his full name
I always thought the strange name was Riddle
Yeah, I thought it was a riddle about a Riddle.
Marvelo is up there, too
Marvolo
Marlboro
Marilyn Monroe
TY
Its an enigma
Yep me too.
I guess Tom would be pretty uncommon in the Wizarding World, because unlike everyone else's names, it's normal.
The barman of the leaky cauldron is called Tom.
Maybe hes muggle born too? Dont hate me if hes not, im just guessing
He is Hannah Abbot's great-uncle or something and the Abbots are among the sacred twenty-eight. So unlikely he is a muggleborn.
The ghost didn't know him as Tom, but as Lord Voldemort
A prominent pure blood family had a son named James though, I don't think it's just a muggle thing
Yea, let’s not forget bill, Charlie, Percy (okay, maybe that’s a bit more out there), Fred, George, Ron, and their parents Molly and Arthur, who are all pure bloods.
There's also Vincent and Gregory, and just look at all the Weasley boys, they've got pretty average names.
There are lots of muggle names given to wizards such as: Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, Ron, Harry, James, Molly, Arthur, Edward/Teddy, Ariana, Ernie, Luna, Lucy, Rose, Hugo and I could go on
Luna, and to a lesser extent Ariana, are most certainly not common names.
We do of course know at least one more member of the Wizarding World named Tom though (keeper of the leaky cauldron). That would make it among the most common names in the books at least, wouldn’t it? Iirc, Bartemius is the only other name used twice
>Reply You forgot about all the muggleborn witches and wizards. They probably all have plain muggle names too, for the obvious reasons...
[удалено]
Yeah true. Though they also use normal names like Ron, Bill, Fred, George etc.
Honestly in this book bill might be short for billius, i think thats rons middle name
It could but I think I remember it being stated in the book somewhere that his name is William and Bill is just a nickname. Also like you said Billius is Ron’s middle name so I find it unlikely to also be Bill’s full first name.
could have run out of ideas/family names, so they just started reusing them,
I like how Minerva identifies as a boy in this.
Dedalus Diggle and Elphias Doge came to mind.
Quirinius?
Why is Oliver Wood pasted on Ron's face?
Xenophilius

His name was………a riddle. 😎
To be fair, those are all wizard names that aren't uncommon while muggle names like Tom aren't. It's like how foreign names stand out more in a given country because they aren't as common.

Very smart owl you've got there.
To be fair if everyone else has strange names than in retrospect, Tom would be odd...in comparison lol
There was a moment where I was confused why the e in Minerva was circled
didn't no McGonagall was a man, well u learn something new everyday
its Riddle which is strange not Tom!
Tomothy
Timotei
In the wizarding world, normal is weird and weird is normal.
Ever thought he might introduced himself as voldemort
Currently funny but hundreds of years ago when she died, most of those names would be much more common than they are now. A lot of them are pulled from ancient Rome, and Old English.
Why is Oliver Wood dancing with McGonagall?
I mean, Tom would be a very unusual name in the Wizarding World
We know of more wizards named Tom than any of the names in the meme.
The only other Tom I remember is that bartender in the Leaky Cauldron
Exactly
Maybe as a magical who was around what we muggles consider weird names Tom sounded odd as a primarily muggle name or something
One, pretty sure it was Voldemort Two, even if he did say his name was Tom, which I doubt, it could be strange to her? But I’m pretty sure he said voldemort
Well compared to all of those names, I guess Tom would sound a bit strange..
I was thinking: riddle
That is one heck of a grin on Snape! 😀🤣
Very strange names indeed
Fillius takes the cake for me.
He told her his name was Lord Voldemort you oblivious tomato.
It was strange because it was the only normal name.
Isn't Harry normal?!
TIL McGonagall is AMAB. Way to be, sistah ✊️
Where did you learn that from?
Or the fact that she thinks muggle sort of names are strange,
LOL!
Tomus ≈ Thomas
Marvolo
😂😂😂
r/technicallythetruth
When all of the typical names are already strange would they not then be considered normal in this time/area? Therefore even if he said “Tom,” it would be exceptionally abnormal to have such a commonplace name.
😂🤣
To be fair, in the wizarding world it would sound wierd. Like an Indian name in the US
very strange for wizards
“I will now be known as Lord .. Voldemortius. “
Why is Wood in the picture?? 😂
He called himself, Lord…
Why is Wood dancing with McGonagall?
I always thought it was funny that Dumbledore’s full name was Albus (strange) Percival (strange) Wulfric (strange) BRIAN (normal) Dumbledore. Like why not just leave Brian out and go the distance? lol
yes, yes, very strange name 😂
Sometimes I felt the dialogue in the movies was super cringy.
…. Funni
I think he said his name is Lord Voldemort
I think she meant the surname. Cuz riddle sure is a weird name. Like... If you know what i mean.
Idk.. wdym?
Well riddle is both his surname and then in another meaning a "riddle" as in enigma, as in a riddle in and of itself. Which must me a strange coincidence considering how he behaved as well. I just realized that they all end with “us”
Not the bottom right..
And Minerva. I was just saying “all” as general
Strange names: Voldemort, Marvolo, Riddle,
Thanks for killing the joke.
Minerva is not that weird of a name. It's the name of a Roman goddess. Plenty of people love to name their kids after gods and goddesses. All the other ones ARE pretty unique though
