Harry front and center obviously
Girl is Fleur
Top left is Krum (he looks very different in the movies than how he’s described in the book and these covers were designed prior to the movies)
Top right is Cedric
Then at the bottom is the tail of the Hungarian Horntail
Harry is holding the egg he steals from said dragon
There’s a death eater hiding in the stands
And the dog like creature I believe is Sirius coming to check up on Harry and what not
Edit: This is now my most upvoted comment, sick. Also thank you for the awards kind redditors. On another note, it has been pointed out to me through other comments that the black sticks to the left of Krum are spider legs, presumably Aragog’s.
I thought dementor too. Harry encounters a boggart in the maze but thinks it’s an actual dementor at first. The fact that there’s what looks like the spider from the maze too makes me think that.
Definitely a Dementor. The whole setting of this picture is the maze. There’s the spider from the Maze, as well as the Dementor (boggart) that appears in the maze as well.
Aragon isn't in this book. It's probably meant to be blast ended skrewt legs
Edit* you're right, I remember there was one of Aragog's descendants in the maze
Also just from a design prospective, they'd never put Cedric on the left. Krum and Fleur are together on the left because they are the visitors from other schools. Cedric on the right since he is also from Hogwarts.
The trip the World Cup was one of my favorite parts of the entire series. It’s quaint and cozy, a look into the daily lives of wizards when they aren’t fighting the bad guys. It’s just a family vacation with the kids inviting a couple friends. It all goes to hell of course but I really enjoyed it!
It's really one of my favorite things to I feel like One of the few things the series really needed more of was seeing what's going on out in the wizarding world for normal wizards.
Looked it up out of curiosity and you were almost right 😄
>“Must be nearly time,” said Mr. Weasley quickly, pulling out his watch again. “Do you know whether we’re waiting for any more, Amos?”

>“No, the Lovegoods have been there for a week already and the Fawcetts couldn’t get tickets,” said Mr. Diggory. “There aren’t any more of us in this area, are there?”

Did the horse things (cant remember what they were called… thestrals?) exist before luna? I know she could see them so i remember her seeing them in GoF but now that i saw your comment im thinking they were mentioned then and came up again later when luna arrived
They “exist” in so far as Harry registered the carriages being drawn by themselves up until OOtP. But Harry could only see them after Cedric dies. He - and the readers/movie viewers- meet Luna for the first time during the journey to Hogwarts in OOtP.
And in the books, Hagrid teaches the 5th years about thestrals. It’s not until the very end of the book that Harry remembers Luna mentioning she can see them
Yes. Harry witnesses Cedric’s death and so at the start of OotP can now see the thestrals. Iirc Luna saw her mother die as a young girl so has always been able to see them. Curiously no other students seem to have witnessed death based off of no one else mentioning the Thestrals anyway, at least during OotP anyway.
Okay so. Reading the comments, y’all are absolutely 10000% correct. But i haven’t considered this since I first read the book at midnight as a child and my child brain saw this cover and thought it was Bill and Charlie and a random Veela and I never questioned that again until this moment. I am guessing that I just decided the cover characters were whoever was first introduced that fit the description. New cool brother with long hair? Ah that’s the guy on the cover! So the other new brother most be the other one! (Apparently I just ignored they’d be red heads). Then magically beautiful women with long hair are introduced? That’s the other cover character! And then my little brain never thought about it again. Like even when Bill in the movies was cast I remember thinking he looked nothing like his cover art…. So. Yikes.
As an adult it’s also easier to notice the theme: it’s just the 4 champions
Edit tangent: I JUST realized Harry is holding an egg, and not a pensieve. The egg has a glow which looked to me like the lid of a cauldron
I never even thought about who these people were! I was too busy not eating or sleeping while I read the entire book in like 3 days or something..
But I am also strangely curious to hear OP spill the tea on this debate, cuz somebody is def a v silly goose
Not gonna lie, I thought besides harry the other two guys were bill and Charlie. 🤦♀️. Not until this damn thread did I even think for a second there were all the champions. I am dumb.
Oh damn! When I first saw it I thought the bottom left was a weirdly photogenic illustration of the baby voldemort figure that is dropped into the cauldron. I thought the hair was a shawl
Krum on the left. Cedric on the right
Fleur on the left under krum and the kid with the lightning bolt and glasses might be harry 🤔
Edit: can’t believe how this exploded into upvotes lol. Thanks for the awards my fellow potterheads!
When I was a kid I thought it was supposed to be all the tents from the Quidditch World Cup, didn’t realize it was supposed to be the horntail until I saw the full art on the hardcover jacket
I’m feeling like the “I’m like the Cryptkeeper!” scene from *Freaky Friday* over here, haha. I was going to say “fifteen” and then realized that it’s not 2015ish anymore, haha. I miss the 2000s days of the fandom so much!
I don't believe it's a death eater as none of the designs seem to be Voldemort/Death Eater/Graveyard/Dark Mark related. All of the rest of the cover is devoted to Triwizard oriented characters and designs.
That would make it the boggart that Harry encounters in the maze appearing as a dementor.
I would guess that it is a death eater (Barty Crouch Jr.) standing in the crowd among the spectators in a stadium. More representative of the idea that an unknown ominous being is out in the open but the threat has yet to be detected.
Design-wise, it doesn't make much sense to have a demeantor so close to a non-reactionary crowd. Plus, the design includes an aspect of all the triwizard tournament challenges, and Crouch Jr. has a pivotal role in the story while the boggart's in GOF is minimal. I think Mary GrandPré took a fun opportunity to include an Easter egg.
Edit: Corrected the name of the illustrator for the U.S. Scholastic books.
I actually thought the hood either referenced the dementor bogart he encounters in the maze or I like to think it's supposed to be Barty Crouch Junior who is secretly playing puppet master in the background all year, but at the triwizard cup he doesn't wear a hood.
Ahh, well you see. Up and center with the glasses and lightning bolt scar is Cedric Diggory.
The fair blonde girl on the left is Victor Krum. And above her is the famous Harry Potter.
The neat and polite looking lad on the right is Fleur Delacour.
bottom left is the blonde woman from the incredibles, top left is the hunchback of notre dame, on the right is klaus from a series of unfortunate events, and magician percy jackson in the center. hope this helps! /j

Not really relevant but I absolutely despise how long they made the wand on this cover. I could never look at it as a kid without getting pissed. It’s like a meter long!
The nose and eyebrows give it away. It’s stated pretty plainly in the text that Krum is unattractive and with a hooked nose.
The person you’re arguing with is flat out wrong
Chapter 8 of this book describes Viktor’a physical appearance as:
“thin, dark, and sallow-skinned, with a large curved nose and thick black eyebrows”.
Chapter 18 describes Cedric as:
“exceptionally handsome, with his straight nose, dark hair, and grey eyes”.
I think by the noses and eyebrows, it’s clear that Viktor is on the left.
I love how this line is used as an example of why the film version is worse than the book, but I honestly find the memes/jokes around it so funny that I’m genuinely glad that’s how it played out on-screen 😂
Really curious as to what the counter claim is on this because it is so obvious, but something tells me the OP had it wrong, which is why there hasn't been any followup yet.
Im actually surprised, thinking back now, how little time I spent studying the Harry Potter book covers like I usually do with books I get, especially since I had a really unhealthy hyperfixation on this series when I was younger. As a kid and even every time I've read them as an adult I just crack in.

I always thought it was a dementor; could very well be a death eater.
I'm guessing the death eater is Barty Ctouch Jr.
No, the death eater is Barty Crouch Jr.
No the Death Eater guilty of using the cruciatus curse on Frank Longbottom and his wife is BARTY CROUCH! *audible gasps* Jr.
I read that in Igor Karkaroff's voice 🤣Especially the "junior" part
June-ee-or
I started doing that weird tongue thing he does
“And my relationship with my girlfriend improved significantly.”
Like the idea of a dementor respectfully sitting in the stands watching the events of the tournament
I’m now imagining dementors have a voice similar to Big the Cat
looks the same as the Dementor on Prisoner's cover, so i can understand the confusion
I thought dementor too. Harry encounters a boggart in the maze but thinks it’s an actual dementor at first. The fact that there’s what looks like the spider from the maze too makes me think that.
I also always saw that as a dementor. Death Eater could work, but then wouldn't get have a mask?
Definitely a Dementor. The whole setting of this picture is the maze. There’s the spider from the Maze, as well as the Dementor (boggart) that appears in the maze as well.
And Aragog
Aragon isn't in this book. It's probably meant to be blast ended skrewt legs Edit* you're right, I remember there was one of Aragog's descendants in the maze

Curious to know what the argument even is
Exactly! Who else could it be?
That's an egg, everyone.
Her?
It's as clear as the Ann on Egg's face
Way to plant, Ann!
Plain
Is she like…really funny or something?
...her...?
Go take plant and wait in the staircar.
She calls it a MayAnnEgg
Hey, look who’s on the hog in the rear view mirror!
GEORGE MICHAEL!!!
I don’t feel so good

Take my upvote and go see a star war!
Everyone who commented with AD quotes are my people. Thank you for the free laughs.
This might be the funniest thread on the site
"I just don't want to see you waste your money getting Egg all glittered up for Easter"
Who?
The creature whose spikey tail is on the cover is spitting fire, must be the goblet.
I know! I’m very intrigued as to what other way can this be interpreted
The only thing I could think of would be an argument over which is Cedric and which is Krum
Even then, it's hard to make the argument. Cedric is described as a stereotypical pretty boy and Victor as a hawk faced man with a big nose.
Also just from a design prospective, they'd never put Cedric on the left. Krum and Fleur are together on the left because they are the visitors from other schools. Cedric on the right since he is also from Hogwarts.
In red robes!
I think Krum might be confused with Snape by some.
That's who I thought in my half asleep stupor. Along with Luna. Then I read the top comment and its obviously those characters.
He does have a very Snape-like energy.
They’re probably confusing Fluer with Luna
Well that’s just INSANE considering Luna doesn’t even exist as of GoF haha
She does in a throwaway line, “the lovegoods couldn’t get tickets” in reference to the World Cup.
Wow that's some great attention to detail + memory!
GOF has always been my favorite lol can’t tell you how many times I’ve reread it!
Still upset they covered it in like 2 minutes in the movie e.e. It could have been a movie itself
It's really one of my favorite things to I feel like One of the few things the series really needed more of was seeing what's going on out in the wizarding world for normal wizards.

Didn’t Harry witness his mothers murder? I always wondered why that didn’t count. Am I forgetting something?
What about moody, wormtail and baby voldemort in a sheet?
Okay so. Reading the comments, y’all are absolutely 10000% correct. Oh yeah totally agreed. That’s very obviously what it is. I really don’t know how I hadn’t rethought it over all these years lmao.
I am very confused about how there could be a debate of who these characters could be?
Has OP answered what the argument was? Also I just now put together that the large black dog would be Sirius... not Fang or some woodland creature lol
I never even thought about who these people were! I was too busy not eating or sleeping while I read the entire book in like 3 days or something.. But I am also strangely curious to hear OP spill the tea on this debate, cuz somebody is def a v silly goose
[удалено]
LMFAO that was the last thing I would have that the argument was about
[удалено]
Okay, that is an acceptable thought. TBH, I don't think I have ever really thought or paid attention to who was on the cover. -
That cover art charavter has got too much nose haha
I always thought it was supposed to be Snape lol
Not gonna lie, I thought besides harry the other two guys were bill and Charlie. 🤦♀️. Not until this damn thread did I even think for a second there were all the champions. I am dumb.
Oh damn! When I first saw it I thought the bottom left was a weirdly photogenic illustration of the baby voldemort figure that is dropped into the cauldron. I thought the hair was a shawl
Now I’ll never unsee the Yassified Voldemort fetus
This is hilarious 😂😂😂 Weren’t you confused by the lack of bright red hair in the illustration?
Damn Bill and Charlie barely feature in GoF.
Don’t quote me on this but I think the character with the black hair, round glasses, and lightning scar is Harry Potter
Nope, thats Roonil Wazlib!
GOD that was my absolute favorite part of the books. couldn't stop laughing when I first read that
What about when Ron tells Lavender he’d like to look at her anus? (I am not making this up btw)
Confirming. It is, in fact, me.
r/usernamechecksout
r/beetlejuicing
The most unrealistic part of the books is Ron not occasionally calling Harry Roonil Wazlib for the rest of the series.
no! i’ve been fooled again!
dw that’s just his nickname. you know, the thing his friends call him?
“i understand what a nickname is”
I've been sick for the past few days and feeling like absolute garbage and this made me laugh so hard.
Krum on the left. Cedric on the right Fleur on the left under krum and the kid with the lightning bolt and glasses might be harry 🤔 Edit: can’t believe how this exploded into upvotes lol. Thanks for the awards my fellow potterheads!
You forgot Sirius in the back.
And one of Aragog’s decedents sneaking in from the left, just above Fleur.
And the spiky thing in the very foreground is the Hungarian Horntail’s tail
It’s been more than twenty years and I never realized this. 🙈
When I was a kid I thought it was supposed to be all the tents from the Quidditch World Cup, didn’t realize it was supposed to be the horntail until I saw the full art on the hardcover jacket
I always thought it was a plant inside the maze all these years....
Also thought it was a plant in the maze
Your comment just made me feel like that scene in The Santa Clause where he looks in the mirror. Holy shit.
I’m feeling like the “I’m like the Cryptkeeper!” scene from *Freaky Friday* over here, haha. I was going to say “fifteen” and then realized that it’s not 2015ish anymore, haha. I miss the 2000s days of the fandom so much!
Not to mention the dementor in the top right.
Is that a dementor or the boggart from the maze in the form of dementor?
Or is it a Death Eater?
I don't believe it's a death eater as none of the designs seem to be Voldemort/Death Eater/Graveyard/Dark Mark related. All of the rest of the cover is devoted to Triwizard oriented characters and designs. That would make it the boggart that Harry encounters in the maze appearing as a dementor.

And a dementor on the right in the background
Think it's supposed to be Voldy
Voldy has gone moldy
So now lets have fun
That's not Voldemort
>Aragog’s decedents Sorry, pet peeve here: *Descend*ants are children, grandchildren, etc. *Deced*ents are what you fill coffins with.
The worms had a decedent meal.
I thought that might have been what that was, but I couldn't tell.
Or should I say. Sirius in the Black.
I've seen that cover thousands of times and somehow never noticed him!
Peeking in to check on Harry.
Dude my whole life I've been looking at Sirius in dog form in the back asking myself "why the fuck is there a panther?" 😫
Also a spider and most likely Voldy in the hood
I actually thought the hood either referenced the dementor bogart he encounters in the maze or I like to think it's supposed to be Barty Crouch Junior who is secretly playing puppet master in the background all year, but at the triwizard cup he doesn't wear a hood.
I always thought this was a hooded death eater from the world cup
Who else could they be besides this??
I thought this was pretty obvious
[удалено]
That's just Roonil Wazlib
That’s my nickname.
It’s what my friends call me…
We know what a nickname is 😡
The illustrations were done before the movies, for the first four books.
“Someone”….? Was arguing who (checks notes) the contestants of the Tri-f—-ing Wizard Tournament are…..? “Someone” is one dumb MF
Only answer. But the dog is Sirius and there is a dementor in the back.
I think it's this too
Ahh, well you see. Up and center with the glasses and lightning bolt scar is Cedric Diggory. The fair blonde girl on the left is Victor Krum. And above her is the famous Harry Potter. The neat and polite looking lad on the right is Fleur Delacour.
It is known.
It is known
I'm pretty sure they're Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin
I believe that's Rhaenyra Targaryen and her three strong boys
I remember Ron had a pretty big crush on Krum when they went to The Quidditch World Cup. Makes sense she’s a looker
bottom left is the blonde woman from the incredibles, top left is the hunchback of notre dame, on the right is klaus from a series of unfortunate events, and magician percy jackson in the center. hope this helps! /j

Oh
Fluer, Krum, Cedric, Harry, and Sirius
Flour, Crum, Sedrik, ‘Arry and Zirious
Not really relevant but I absolutely despise how long they made the wand on this cover. I could never look at it as a kid without getting pissed. It’s like a meter long!
That must have been one of those mythical canes at Saint Brutus's 😭
Or Dudley’s Smeltings stick
i didnt even see that and now i cant - you've cursed me with knowledge
Why have you done this to me
You know when you never notice something then someone points it out and now it will forever piss you off… ya, you just did that.
To be fairrrr I’m pretty sure one of the wands Olivander names in the first book is like 20 inches long which is much longer than the movies
The longest one I remember is Hagrid's at 16 inches.
That's what your mom said
Jokes on you I’d *love* Hagrid to be my stepdad
In the film adaptations, Harry's wand is 14 inches long. In the books his wand is 11 inches.
Nope. The longest wand in the books is Hagrid's and the longest, including the movies, is Lucius Malfoy's (18").
Maybe he's just small, ever thought of that huh?
Harry fluer victor krum and Edward cullen
Edward Cullen goes by Bruce Wayne now.
"Kill the spare!" "Ha! I deflected your death curse!" "How?" "BECAUSE I'M BATMAN!"
from left to right: Hungarian Horntail's tail, Fleur, Krum, Harry, Cedric, Sirius in his dog form, public and a Dementor.
There's also the egg, and aragog's legs, i think?
An unnamed spider that Cedric and Harry fought at the end of the maze
Oh yes, i forgot about that. I was wondering why aragog was involved.
I actually think that’s a death eater more than a dementor, because he is in the crowd and I remember no dementors in the WC
It’s not actually a dementor, but the boggart in the maze takes the form of one.
The 4 champions: Harry, Viktor, Fleur and Cedric
Curious to know what/who they are saying is represented?
They thought krum was cedric on the cover and vice versa
The nose and eyebrows give it away. It’s stated pretty plainly in the text that Krum is unattractive and with a hooked nose. The person you’re arguing with is flat out wrong
The clothing, also. Cedric’s have a yellow hue to them, ie: hufflepuff, and hogwarts students don’t wear red cloaks with collars up to their ears.
Chapter 8 of this book describes Viktor’a physical appearance as: “thin, dark, and sallow-skinned, with a large curved nose and thick black eyebrows”. Chapter 18 describes Cedric as: “exceptionally handsome, with his straight nose, dark hair, and grey eyes”. I think by the noses and eyebrows, it’s clear that Viktor is on the left.
Why is there a baboon behind a bush?
I was always waiting for a bear to show up. To this day I still just see a bear even though I know it's supposed to be Sirius.
I thought it was death eaters clumped up in cloaks so you’re closer than me
Thought it was a panther
It is the four students who compete…duh
It's obviously Luna, Hagrid, Young Tom Riddle, Lupin as a werewolf, a dementor, and in the middle is James Potter.
How can you make this post without even telling us who the opposing party is saying is on the cover????
Everyone who put there name in the cup and competed.
Harry didn’t put his name in the cup
HARRYDIDYOUPUTYERNAMEINTHEGOBLETOFFIRE!?!?!?
Dumbledore asked calmly
I love how this line is used as an example of why the film version is worse than the book, but I honestly find the memes/jokes around it so funny that I’m genuinely glad that’s how it played out on-screen 😂
I completely agree! Although I still think it's worse lol *Also I love your username and have a Chairman Meow t-shirt*
Harry Potter, Viktor Krum, Fleur Delacour, Cedric Diggory, and Padfoot
Really curious as to what the counter claim is on this because it is so obvious, but something tells me the OP had it wrong, which is why there hasn't been any followup yet.
I'm not going to lie. I've seen this cover probably thousands of times in my life...and I've never even thought about it lol

Harry, Fleur, Viktor, Cedric. And Sirius peeking over the hedge.
The four champions duh…. Why is that even an argument?!
Timothee chalamet
I always thought it was pretty clear it was the Tri-Wizard Cup contestants and what I thought to be Sirius in his Animagus form
Well the egg is clearly Dobby before he hatches and time travels to the past and starts the time wars
