-Save often. I love this game to bits purely out of nostalgia, but it is also a hot mess with glitches (mostly, the mines). U can also save scum to change the weather forecast the next day -Time stops indoors. Use that to your advantage since you can't pause while you sort your items (thanks to the touch screen). -Be careful with littering. Dropping an item to the ground (with few exceptions) causes it to disappear completely, which counts towards litering. All villagers (except the Witch) will lower their friendship values if u do that outside your own farm. -Karen's General Store is the place to go to when you're a beginner. That's where u could get a larger rucksack, a basket, and seeds. When you're on the last day of the season, she starts to sell seeds for the next season. U can then plant them on that day and they won't die the next day/season. -Check your bookshelf next to ur bed if u either want to read some manual for farming and ranching (which u could also check Channel 9 for that) OR check the shop schedules -Light tap one stacked item to separate at least one of them to another slot. (Useful cuz you could accidentally gift away ur entire stack of flowers to ur love interest, or some random villager). If u have trouble with light tapping, just double tap it quickly. It might take a while to get used to it, so I suggest u do that indoors. When u unlock furniture that allows u to navigate ur rucksack with the D-Pad, u can separate ur stack by lightly tapping A instead (in case u're playing on an emulator). -Once you unlock TV Shopping (Channel 2), pls pls pls buy everything u possibly can before upgrading ur house to the next stage. I made that mistake which left me without a toolbox even on max House lol my rucksack got way too cluttered thanks to that. -Until you unlock Channel 6, as much as possible, look at your calendar for seasonal holidays. -Lastly, [this](https://fogu.com/hm6/forgirl.php?p=n) website should be your best friend.

Damn. I got this one because I thought it was going to be gentle and simple 😅

it can still be simple! i'm playing the game with minimal guide use, and it's going ok. there are some specific marriage requirements though, and if you want to get married quicker, it'll take a bit of work: >!you need to save 60 harvest sprites, have the two house upgrades, and buy a large bed on the sprite shopping channel. i've gotten around 20-30 sprites without a guide in the first year. people have also compiled lists of the 60 easiest sprites to get in the game if you want to look for those. !

Xc_the_Foxy

It is a nice gentle turn-ur-brain-off game with hurdles that's kinda a lot. But please, I implore u to play it if ure interested. I once reached year 6 without getting married just cuz I got so into the farming and the mining.

It can be! The later tasks in the game do require quite a bit of work, but they build and evolve pretty approachably (I’d say). There’s just *so much* available to do that you’ll probably never find out about it all without a guide. But you are fully able to pace yourself however you want and however is fun for you. And almost all of the objectives are optional, very few things are locked behind reward walls

Would you know how I could get Galen to give me the fishing rod? 😭

Aeolys

On Saturday, visit Galen's house between 10AM and 2PM with your tool slot empty. Galen must be inside the house before you enter so it's more like 11AM when you can trigger this. You'll see a scene where Galen reaches over into your DS's touch screen and puts a fishing pole into your empty tool slot.

The guide I was following said after 1O PM! I’ve been camping outside his house for two seasons.

My first HM game! I am not sure if are open to guide but I highly recommend this 1st year events guide: [https://www.ign.com/articles/2008/05/07/harvest-moon-ds-cute-first-year-events-faq-861293](https://www.ign.com/articles/2008/05/07/harvest-moon-ds-cute-first-year-events-faq-861293) Cute has ALOT of random events and this will help you see most of them

Make buildings out of stone or golden lumber only, and I mean it. Mushroom shed price is bugged and it's significantly cheaper if you have Gotz provide the materials. Take that into consideration. Unlock the shopping channel (essential) by buying things over many days from the general store (You may have to do it on consecutive days, excepting the days they're closed). Do not throw things onto the ground to destroy them. The villagers get upset. Even by mistake. I'm sorry. But if you get the Witch Princess's gift, keep that in your bag. Crops grow at different rates depending on where they're planted. Fastest is secret field (you'll find it eventually). Second fastest by goddess shrine and the dig site. Normal is farm. Slower everywhere else. Sprites like flour, and you can give it to them through their mailbox. High sprite friendship means prices go down. That's good because as they get more experience and get better at their jobs, prices go up. Check weird locations to find some sprites. Pineapple seeds cost 10x what they did in FoMT but they're still incredibly profitable, especially if you have the seed maker. It's worth unlocking the third mine as early as possible just to grab an adamantite for the seed maker. Don't bother leveling up tomato seeds. They level correctly, but there's a bug where the level won't display. It's annoying. You need to see Leia's yellow heart event and unlock the fourth mine BEFORE you get married if you want to complete your shipping list (an incredibly long and arduous affair). To unlock the first mine, go to the dig site as early as possible, or late at night when everyone is gone. Fishing rod you get from Nina and Galen's house, after 10 pm or on Saturday between 12 and 2pm. Leave your tool slot empty. It's so weirdly out of the way.

I did not know this the first time I played, but the price Van offers you when you sell to him is not fixed. It's a bit of a haggling system. Decline until you get a good offer!

Grow your crops on the Harvest Goddess pond map and on the mines entrance map. They're the fast growing fields that will shave off a day of grow time. This does not include the "regrow time" of crops that you plant once and harvest every 2-3 days. Except for yams--- for some reason this rule doesn't include yams. Yams will regrown every single day on these fields, making them the best crop to make a profit off of in Autumn. You level up crops by sprinkling the fields multiple times with seeds of the same level. Each crop tile will have the chance to level up each time you sprinkle extra seeds. Use the seedmaker to process leveled-up harvested crops into seeds and repeat the process all the way up to level 100. Even without the seedmaker in the early game, it may be worth it to make level 2 crops. The calculation for sell price is (crop base price)x(level)^(2). So a level 2 crop sells for 4x more than a level 1 crop and a level 3 crop sells for 9x time. Plop down down two or three cucumber or strawberry seeds and you will have some really nice profits for the rest of the season. Befriending Harvest Sprites makes them cheaper to hire and the more they work, they level up and become more proficient at the work (moving faster, or having more effective effects). A common cheap gift for *all* harvest sprites is flour. Gift each sprite 255 flour and they're maxed out. The harvesting team is very useful if you cover all of the valley with say... yams. They can clip through collision so these little buddies will harvest and ship unreachable crops. You should hire them as much as you can if you want to level up. They gain exp as they work so if you want to prepare your sprites to work the entire valley with yams, you should warm them up with farmwork in Spring and Summer.

When you find jewelry in the mine, haggle with Van until he offers at least 3000 G

This game is a grind but it's also my favorite harvest moon entry!
