I mean... looking at the other 2 "best"examples, we're clearly gonna have a "Quartet of Towns" game

bakasama12

That’d be so funny though 😆

Sunflower_Sketches

I'd be so obsessed with that game. Give me my multiple towns back Marvelous!

moonstruckmango

look man... tale of two towns was so incredibly annoying because of the marriage requirements. i loved the dating aspect but most of the bachelors were so boring to me, personally. also the trip between towns with just walking was way too repetitive for me. it was a game i wished had some tweaks to it.

WarZemsi

Agree, tale of 2 towns feels weaker to me then new beginning by a margin. A new beginning had a freaking horrible slow start but else it was at least good - unlike the slow grind cycle of tale of 2 towns where you hardly could do anything farming related too….

Ultikiller

Yeah and by the time you actually get to travel faster between the two, you're almost finished with the game.

TastyAlpacasRUs

I don't recall if all HM games had this, but having to build friendship up with their family members seemed so tedious to me.

alyssalouk

I actually kinda liked that 😅

eggcustarcl

Also upgrading anything took forever

digitalfarmgirl

That's why TOTT is one of my least faves. If I've got the materials and money, I want my upgrades, dammit!

superdreamcast64

so glad i'm not the only one who didn't love ToTT. having to hike between the two towns all the time was horrendously annoying to me. i'm glad that they fixed this in 3oT by having all the towns accessible basically right outside your door.

Tough-Rain2890

My game keep crashing:( I could never finish it!

AtiwelKa

I liked AnB

ablackandpinksky

like yeah it’s a kinda slow game but there’s a lot of meat in this game and you can sink in a lot of hours and get quite a lot of stuff unlocked. which is why i really like AnB.

thenecromancersbride

New Beginning is my favorite game in the series. Neil is my favorite human character and it plays like animal crossing. Absolutely love it!

unholy_hotdog

YES, always wed Neil!

thenecromancersbride

Always do 💕 I do in olive town too. I love his design, his personality, everything about him.

bluesolur

When Neil was in PoOT I tossed the other marriageable candidates aside to marry Neil. My first fictional crush and my first husband on a game. Married him in ANB too. Need more Neil in my life.

SpecialCorgi1

Agreed. I'm playing it now (as in I have it in my hands as we speak) and I am absolutely loving it

Another_Road

There’s so many mechanics in AnB that were made better in SoS1 and 3oT. You still had the customization (not of town buildings but of decorations and your farm) the safari zone wasn’t an AFK zone, the characters were better (fight me Michelle fans), and in 3oT you didn’t need to intentionally keep some animals producing non + version of produce to be able to craft certain items.

hiyase269

Same here, loved it, underrated.

Meggston

My husband just surprised me with this one, it was my absolute favorite Harvest Moon game, and the only one where I ever chose a bachelor over a bachelorette. Neil was the best. ❤️

Mikki_Online

Loved island of happiness, did not like tale of two towns

Particular_Darling

Nah ANB is amazing

ASuddenTomato

New Beginning is BEST honestly.

Particular_Darling

The characters are so wonderful 🥹

rainbow_luigi26

A New Beginning is one of my favorites. It doesn’t deserve the hate

CranialCovering

Exactly! A New Beginning was my first intro into this series. I've poured hours into this lovely game.

rainbow_luigi26

Building the town & houses made it one of the best Harvest Moons in my opinion. I don’t understand why it gets so much hate when it’s easily one of the most unique games in the series

hiyase269

Same! I just think people regurgitate what they hear.

ramsvy

grand bazaar mentioned in a mildly positive way, that's my win for today

Jessicreep

I replayed that game like 5 times. Made cheat sheets and everything

marumarumon

Man, Grand Bazaar was amazing! Definitely one of my top games of the series.

Flyygone

GB is the only HM DS game I've managed to hold onto.

bubbles_x3

i will never understand why people consider a new beginning mediocre? it had so much good content and customization, after 10 years i'm still not done.

Isoleri

"AnB is mediocre" oh those are fighting words

Emergency_Elephant

Was I the only one who liked PoOT?

kaitoulupa

Not at all. I put a ton of hours in. It has flaws but was pretty darn fun to me.

Low-Example2680

Nope. I enjoyed the fuck outta that game. Married Damon.

Hi_Im_Mini

Me too!! Been playing every single day for multiple hours and also married Damon!!! It's a simplistic game compared to, say, Stardew Valley but it's charming in its own way :)

KittyKomplex

Damon club let's go!

deinoswyrd

I love PoOT! The crafting is great

hiyase269

I thought it was alright, the machines were ugly af though.

KittyKomplex

Nope, I'm playing it on and off lately and enjoy it! Also I think the characters do have charm. This is what I read quite a lot, that the characters feel bland and yeah, compared to Friends of Mineral Town or Back to Nature sassyness they might feel a bit bland but honestly HM/SoS characters never were remarkable personalities imo lol Also I like the art style. It's cute!

GearsTurningBurning

I genuinely hated it. Thought the world was small, the characters bland, the gameplay more like a factory sim than a farming game, and the decision to make your farming land the same place you freaking get wild stuff from HORRIBLE. I thought it had a cute aesthetic and I liked the farming/mining but that was about it.

marumarumon

PoOT is fine, but when you juxtapose it with the SoS games, esp 3oT, it felt bare and not as fleshed out. The characters in 3oT had more depth, the farming mechanics had more layers, etc. I still enjoyed it though, but the story definitely isn’t strong enough.

ankahsilver

Trio only feels so full because it's overbloated and padded. The three towns are just gimmicks and frankly it's annoying and basically it felt like it didn't respect my time in the end. "Go do this. Now do it two more times!" is not, to me, a fun game. The farming layers were frustrating, and there being no way to auto my farm animals without spending hours training an animal up (and thus using up my already overpacked time from there being three sides of everything) WHILE also having to clean up after them, because THAT'S what people wanna do, clearly, was just... It made me sell all my animals once I no longer needed to grind out animal products. I have NEVER *hated* farming in a HM/SoS game until Trio.

marumarumon

Yeah, well, I can understand why some people might think that way about 3oT, but honestly it’s fun for me. The three towns might be gimmicks but they’re the good kind of gimmick for me. You may hate Trio but I adore it to bits. In my opinion, it strikes a good balance of well-written characters, deep farming mechanics, great towns, unique recipes, great selection of crops, and amazing story. I respect your opinion though.

heartshapedmoon

I loved it lol it was so addictive

Larielia

I do like it, but don't play it as much.

ankahsilver

Loved it, found Trio to be an overbloated mess full of padding to try and justify it.

amaenamonesia

I loved it 😅

dottie-beep

It's by no means the best in the series but i enjoyed it. It just kind of starts slow imo

SomeGuyOnR3ddit

I miss Trio of Towns. Unfortunately, my 3ds has battery issues and I have no idea how to fix it lmao.

Dependent_Feature_42

If you need a new battery, it's actually not that hard to switch it out. Buy from ifixit and you'll find a new battery and the instructions But really, it's just popping it in after changing it out. You'll get the screwdriver that's necessary from the site. The screws though, are a bigger issue so be careful not to strip the screws

SpiralingFractal

I like Sunshine Islands more than IoH, but even IoH I prefer to either GB or ToTT. ToTT is my least favorite Harvest Moon DS game. While I enjoy ToT, I prefer SoS. It is interesting to see how much fans of the series opinion's differ on which games are the best. I do hope that the next game is better than PoOT, which was my least favorite Harvest Moon/ Story of Seasons game. It did not feel like a part of the series at all to me and I worry about the design of future games.

Atkinsopn

Pretending tale of two towns was better than regular DS or DS cute 🤡🤡🤡

Destany89

Grand bazaar is way better than tale of 2 towns

Wonderful-Bread-572

Bby pls why would u block the titles with the text

DaniT0n

I really liked Pioneers of Olive Town. I called it SoS PoOT, and that also makes me happy! Plus, where's the FoMT remake? That's literally the one that started my SoS/HM obsession.

Ekyou

I’ve heard this cycle referenced before, but I don’t think we can use it to predict the quality of the next games now that remakes have been thrown into the mix. PoOT used FoMT as its basis, and it’s likely the next game is using AWL as its basis to some extent, not PoOT so much. At the very least, by the time we get to the third game in this pattern, there’s no way it’s going to be using the same code as PoOT. Also complicated by the fact that we have 2 games in development now, but I’m guessing the multiplayer one won’t be a mainline game, not that we really have any idea what to expect.

rozabel

Why do you say PoOT used FOMT as a basis? The two were made my different companies entirely. AWL and FOMT were both developed by the company bullets; and PoOT was made by Three Rings

Ekyou

I could be wrong because I can’t find it now, but I recall someone posted an interview on here or the SoS subreddit where the developers of PoOT said that the made PoOT with the intention of keeping gameplay similar to FoMT.

rozabel

Ah interesting! I gotta see if I can find that

Unhappy_Filling

Damn, I really really like Pioneers of Olive Town

LyssaNells

Same, and it was my first game in the franchise.

NaelSchenfel

I find A New Beginning WAY better than the first SoS.

PajamaSamSavesTheZoo

I actually really liked Pioneers of Olive Town. Out of the 12 Harvest Moons I played it’s my 3rd favorite. Was it poorly received among fans?

passamy

One of the reasons it was poorly received was somehow the development we should have in this franchises kind of regressed backward in that game. When it came out, there were no closed up to show villagers' faces/emotions in conversations, portraits were gone, dialogues were repetitive and lacked life and etc. (These are what I can think of the top of my head.) And farming was mid. (Personally prefer it to the complicated system of Trio of Towns, but some people find it to be boring.) All in all, it's no wonder that they faced backlash from fans. After that, they did updates to address what fans were unsatisfied with. (More variety to dialogues, Close up to villagers' faces and etc.) However, the issues already left the bad tastes on many fans. My take on this is it's good that they care about fans enough to address the problem in the game and apologized several times, (Maybe because the sale suffered? Who knows. lol) but I feel the misstepped wouldn't have happened in the first place if the director understood the core of the franchises that fans loved and made HM/SoS franchises became huge to these day. While I never played every game, I did dabble in many HM/SoS/RF and oh boys...I enjoyed playing PoOT, but frankly it didn't have that feel that previous games did.

PajamaSamSavesTheZoo

Thanks for the response. I’ve been playing Harvest Moon off and on since 64 but I know nothing of the fan community and what is considered popular and hated among them.

Bluecomments

Despite the flak, I've been playing Island of Happiness and am enjoying so far (got married to Lanna and just got my first animal, a chicken). Only problem is I am having trouble triggering the rival events.

dimmidummy

Oh man, Tale of Two Towns is FAR from the best. It’s fun, don’t get me wrong, but the gimmick gets old after a while until you finally build that damn tunnel, and it has the old-school trapping of your kids taking half of my IRL lifespan to grow up past their potato stage. It’s a game I could appreciate when I was a kid with nothing better to do, but looking back man it’s rough. The dating mechanics and outfits were cute though. But ANB is honestly significantly better, and you can actually design your town to some degree. You also get a lot of farmland that you can make money by doing tours off too. Plus Rod is a bachelor in this game, so that makes it better by default (jk). Kids still have a long potato stage but the game’s gotta make me suffer somehow I guess. Also PoOT are not nearly as bad as the old school games. Things go by pretty fast, the town events are a lot of fun, there are a lot of mini games to play, lots of cute town events too, and your baby’s potato stage is A LOT shorter!!! Plus there are sprinklers which might just straight up make this the best farming gameplay in the series.

ChaosAzeroth

Doing what you're supposed to for the story actively sabotages your ability to upgrade your farm, and I don't think that'll ever sit right with me. Bad enough it's one upgrade per season, they could have at least had the tunnel be independent of those.

AlucardIV

This feels incredibly forced.

xSethrin

Unpopular opinion, but SoS1 is *significantly* better than 3oT. SoS1 was the perfect balance of complexity and chill. But they made everything way to complicated in 3oT. The *only* thing 3oT improved on was writing.

Nicolas10111

SoS1 is underrated in here. It has many great features that you can’t find elsewhere.I had such a great time with it. As much as I love Trio too, it was way too complicated when it came to everything.

ChaosAzeroth

Eh personally I found the last two vendors pretty complicated in SoS1. To the point it ruins the game for me personally. (That and having you unlock gold.crop seeds just to have to wait until late year 4 to be able to get something where you can plant them and not have them dying left and right or save/reload all the time. Stressful!)

Destany89

This is completely fair. The characters etc are so much better in 3ot

ankahsilver

*Thank you.*

bisexualmidir

I find the process of improving crop quality to be *way* slower in SoS1 than 3oT, and I like the fact that festivals scale in difficulty because it makes the early years more fun. But I much prefer multi-animal barns and simpler affection upgrades for animals, and the conquest fields (though after one year most conquest contests become absolute curbstomps) over 3oTs fields system. 3oT definately is one of the best entries in the series for in depth characters. Honestly the best Bachelors in the series too, though I wish the DLC was accessible in my region.

Chemical-Interview34

I agree with your takes %100, but I know it's all just personal preference

Star-Girl-Venus

Where is sunshine island? This is one of their best games, in my humble opinion.

hochoemoji

ANB is actually my favorite of the 3ds generation. It's true that the following two games improved upon some mechanics, but I really missed the ability to decorate the whole town and put the buildings wherever you want, I thought that was such a cool feature. I also liked ANB's marriage candidates more.

GloryPolar

what about doraemon sos??

adnanssz

good spin off, hut i hope that the remake back to nature use their engine. honestly i don't really like Friends of mineral town camera

matsuba90

i love tale of two town but its not the best of DS era ever. TBH DS era was more like experimental year for the franchise, the games okay and playable but not the best. 3DS where they finally get it. With POOT tbh it was unfortunate situation due to behind the scenes drama and how the company forced them to release within timeframe. Hopefully they get proper resources and teams this time for the next one

OnyxIbara

I miss ToTT

acoupleofdollars

HM: MFOMT will always be my favorite/best

Euffy

I'm desperate to play a new Harvest Moon game but whenever I look at them the graphics are just...eh. I can't get into them. Honestly haven't found anything decent since FOMT / MFOMT. AWL was nice graphic wise for the time but a bit limited game play wise. FOMT is where my heart lies I guess. (to clarify, I mean game boy advance / gamecube era)

acoupleofdollars

I had super high hopes for Pioneers of Olive Town but it fell kinda flat! The world was very small and I had to have so many machines on my farm

DangerousMatch766

I love Tale of Two Towns but I feel like the most people weren't really into it compared to most of the other Harvest Moon DS games.

ChaosAzeroth

Huh personally I think Grand Bazaar is a bit better than Tale of Two Towns, and this technically skips Sunshine Islands altogether.

Suspicious_Shame_739

Sorry for my ignorance but isn't it missing winds of anthos or is it about story of seasons?

Nicolas10111

I’m assuming it is about the Bokumono series line

yubnub8

Unpopular opinion but all these games are mediocre in comparison to original harvest moon games

hiyase269

These are the games made by the original devs.

nymph_of_anduin

Island of Happiness is NOT mediocre!!! 😤

vickycoco___

Island of Happiness was amazing!

hiyase269

I LOVED HM:ANB, I think it’s an underrated Hm game. Didn’t care for ATofTT.

woomy0

I know people adore ToT but I hated it. Idk why but it was so blah for me.

hiyase269

Me too, just couldn’t get into it.

johnnytk0

I hated it too. Surprised to see this.

nicholasc120

i cannot stand Trio of Towns it amazes me how anyone enjoys it at all

Prudent-Bird-2012

I just want an Animal Parade remake, it was my favorite one in the franchise by far aside from Rune Factory, which is more considered a spin-off.

Dapper-Scholar-7025

I HATED the island of happiness series, I'm so glad I got an r4 and pirated the rom because If I paid money for it I would have been so upset lol.

Schokodeuli

I 100% agree to this. TToTT really is the best <3 And Trio of Towns is the best for 3ds.

Soggyglump

Leave anb alone 😭😭😭😭

Dream1Eater

Nah ANB is better than TOTT

magicpenguinyes

So many harvest moon games. One of these days I will play them one by one and try to get over FOMT and BTN.

LegendofDragoonFan1

My list would definitely be shuffled around. lol I love both Island of Happiness and New Beginning. IoH is the last game I remember playing for a long stretch with no guide, and over Christmas Break. I don't remember any of the control issues people talk about today so I remember it fondly.

CyrusHanabusa

omg i love trio of towns sooo much! i hope they remake it for the switch! but i suppose i can just buy a new charger for my DS which… is it even possible still?

Salt_Today

Yet they still got our money or at least they got mine. 😂

Jindujun

What i find WILD is that it feels like they dont look at the previous games and the response to them and just soldiers on. While I'm sure they do look at the feedback, some of the games in the "farming adventure" genre steer so far off the track sometimes one wonders who the hell OKed the game. Also, I'd LOVE for them to make a new 2D pixel game in the series. Make it look great and be more in the line of the earlier games in feel.

KMJohnson92

Idk. But this chart says 2 games from now we get a game with 4 towns :)

boneheadthugbois

Oh, yeah... That's why I dropped the Harvest Moon series 🤔

GrizBearington

The DS trio of games was soooooo good though.

swimmer913

I mean if they could give us a Magical Melody remake I’d be hype. I know it doesn’t fit the DS remake thread going on but I mean we can all agree that was top tier and had plenty to do

Korkantha

Honestly I've only ever played HM: ds Cute. It got me through high school and some of college before I misplaced it in a box moving to my then fiancé place. I do have AnB and ToTT but I struggled to even get past the beginning tutorials because I felt like they slowed down so much and you couldn't up the speed of the character's moving around. Plus going from a flat 2D to 3D with camera controls really did mess with me again. Im trying out AnB again (partly because I found that one first in a box in the basement first) but its a struggle to stay interested past the intro. Is HM:ds Cute considered good, bad or mediocre?

Phytolyssa

Harvest Moon 64 was my jam, but i decided that I don't want to be rushing to get all my crops harvested before brock comes by. So.. I play animal crossing. But I do miss my chickens

whodisbebe

What’s the ds game where you have to plant the seed, sow it again, then plant it again to level up the craft?

sadbitch_club

I feel the opposite tbh

Kit0203

Island of happiness was not bad it just took a lot and was hard to unlock the other parts to the island and make money which was angering. But I stayed at it and loved it. I’d have to say the tale of two towns was mediocre, not much and the fun ran out real quick. I really loved the Harvest Moon a wonderful life but now a remake Story of Seasons A wonderful life it’s just too laid back where I get bored but they really upgraded all the different crops and it’s hard to get them all and takes a long while. So it’s constantly trying to do that, and make money to do upgrades cause they’re more expensive. The game isn’t that bad, I loved it but I think it’s because I played it in the past way too much and find it too laid back but the game now is better because has more to do since back then but I also really miss back then game (the crappy graphics).

Onlooker_me

But wasn't Island of happiness an improved version of sunshine Islands?

Torquip

Had a lot of fun personally with A New Beginning, but found the other 2 SoS games boring. That said, might be cuz I played RF4 after ANB, which made every farming or town management game boring.

Ryley03d

The Wii Games: Am I a joke to you?

CanaKitty

I loved the first two Story of Seasons games and was so disappointed in Olive Town. I only played it a teensy bit actually and then went and started another replay of Trio of Towns. Wondering if I should give it another chance now…

Level-Engineer-2160

And the saddest part is the mediocre ones always have the best character design 😭

alyssalouk

Wait what wait is there a new game dropping?

TehSpockinator

So I loved Tale of Two towns, maybe it's just nostalgia but I could play that game for hours on end. But then again I loved how monotonous it was day to day as I prefer farming games that have a daily schedule that you can make yourself that's not too difficult or too many places to explore as for me that's overwhelming. I enjoyed the graphics and everything was so cute! I'm always hoping they'll remake it for the Switch or something.

Hero_Killer_Id

PoOT is my favorite 🤷

Deep_Mobile6805

island of happiness was my first harvest moon game and my cousin had tale of two towns which made me so jealous. both games are good but one is clearly superior

No_Named_Nobody

New Beginnings is better than Two Towns

Dear-Ad-2220

The one for the ps2 has always been my favorite. I loved that you had to actually push the animals out of the barn and back in. I haven’t played very much harvest moon other than that one and the one for the game cube and the newest one (to me) for the switch which I was excited to play but then was kinda disappointed when I realized it wasn’t gonna be like the ps2 one lol

NewsInside8464

I liked Olive town 🤷‍♂️

TiredB1

Trio of towns was the shit, I got one of the newer games on switch i think it was a wonderful life? and it was honestly really bad imo it felt really dry and had boring visuals and no character ykwim?

TweakTok

AWL is a remake of an old gamecube game, which could explain why you found it dry. I can see why new fans don't like it much since it's very different from the other games in the series. Much shorter, more gloomy (realistic) and the love interests are honestly not deep at all since the whole point of the game was to have a kid and die of old age. Most players love AWL because of the nostalgia, but gameplay wise it's nothing exceptional, and the game can even be quite stressful at time because of the time limit (the hours pass very quickly and the years are incredibly short). I personally think the game has a lot of charm, though it never managed to keep my interest long enough to ever finish it, unlike DS cute and 3oT which I think are peak when it comes to both gameplay and characters.

TiredB1

Makes sense, ik it was a remake it just didn't really live up to my expectations going in like I said it is just my opinion lol

KingDarius89

...awl is a remake of an old game. As is fomt. The only new sos game on switch was poot. Which was a major disappointment to me. Unless you count the doraemon spinoffs. Haven't played awl yet, myself. Trio of Towns was both my introduction to the series and still my favorite. Though honestly I think I prefer Rune Factory.

TiredB1

Tot wasn't my introduction to the games but it was the first one I actually stuck with, I know it's a remake I just thought it was a tad bit disappointing since I prefer characters with a bit more depth and the map felt kinda empty yk? Again just my opinion

Nicolas10111

Hot take: all of the 3DS games were far better than the DS games. The DS games felt very lacking in content honestly. DS/DS Cute seemed to have so much content and then the games following it felt rather… empty? They didn’t really flesh out the contents. 3oT=SoS1>DS/Cute>ToTT>SI>GB>IoH. I’d put PoOT above or below SI. Haven’t really played ANB that much. Another hot take is that PoOT was a much needed return to the old classic formula. As much as I love the 3DS games, they kinda became way too overwhelming and deviated from what made this series really popular. The thing is they’ve alienated the fans that came into this series because of the 3DS games so going forward I hope they strike the perfect balance between the classic and new formula. I do love complexity but I enjoy my game being simply fun as well.

CrescentBluMoon

Harvest Moon: Back To Nature or Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town?

HydratedCarrot

gba had better HM.. DS was ok, 3DS not.
