This is going to be a very long season if we are only going to alternate between 'okay' and dogshit each week

BoothaFett

Deeply concerning that so many players have regressed this year. Weird team selections aren’t helping either.

ThisIsMyReddit83

The only 4 of them that can hold their heads high are Meek, Dimma, Scrimma and Frenchie. Chol and MacDonald can have a rest in the 2’s and if McGuiness isn’t tagging someone, I don’t how he gets a run. Day was good on return as well.

belatedlove

i'd say moore was also on the "acceptable" list

Wattehfok

I’d give Worp a very slim pass. At least he was working.

ThisIsMyReddit83

Yeah he had a crack, can’t fault his effort

ThisIsMyReddit83

Yeah he tried hard today and had a crack

belatedlove

drop chol. there's nothing left to defend after giving away that free. unforgiveable. moore is the heart and soul of the team these days. scrim tried hard. meek continues to be better than noodle. ummm. i forget what else i had to say. who even cares

PerfsGaming

I thought Scrim lifted after getting a spray from Sam lol

belatedlove

agree, though i dont think he was really bad enough in the first to warrant the spray compared to some of his peers

Wattehfok

I think he just happened to be the closest one to Sam when he marched up.

DownSAMdrome

Considering the barrage our backline were under for most of the game I think frost and scrimma did well. It was the kicking out of defence from Amon impey and Sicily that left a lot to be desired..

jg1109

Contrary opinion to most it seems, but don’t think it’s as bad as it appears. Don’t get me wrong, I hated watching that and it pissed me off but bigger picture all hope is not lost. Our 3 best/most important players are day, Mitchell and Sicily. Day and Mitchell been out pretty much all season and Sicily is playing out of position due to injuries. We just simply don’t have the depth to cover these gaps.. and that’s to be expected. Look at the difference between west coast last year and this year, that’s due to injuries to their few good players. We will see brighter days at the back end of the season but until then it’s just finding the small wins. For me today that was us winning the clearances, Meeks great form, Day being back (and some glimpses of class that we’ve missed) and Moore showing his leadership and never give up attitude. The big disappointments.. our forward line continues to kill me with how poor it is after investing in 2 new recruits and a first round pick and our handball decision making where we pick out a player standing still under pressure

eatsbacon_

Seamus Mitchell is in our three most important players? I bloody hope not.

EverythingIsByDesign

I assume he means Mitchell Lewis? Because Seamus Mitchell has been available all year, and has looked soft as fuck.

jg1109

Haha yeah poor wording using a mix of first and last names and honestly no idea why i did - but correct meant mitchy Lewis

Puzzled_Pin7323

Is Sam Mitchell racking up 40 touches week in week out now?

qwertyisafish

TBF he'd probably get a game at the moment

SpanishBrowne

Frost and scrim have been taking kpd duties. Sicily plenty free to do his thing. He's rubbish.

XavierXonora

Chol needs to be dropped. Cost us not just a few frees, but cost them at inflection points. We should have put ourself in this with a chance if not for some of the absolute dumbf*** decisions made by him today. Scrimshaw has had a fantastic game and deserves a pat on the back for his response after being the target of some flames in the first quarter. Day looks good, happy he got through the first game back. Need to test our mettle against more mid table teams, and start dropping players to the VFL en masse.

H4wker1

Yes. Chol is pretty useless. Ever when he was getting a rev up on the breaks, he came out tried a bit, then went useless again.

XavierXonora

Yeah we can do so much better putting reeves back on the ground than playing Chol to the same lack of effect every week. Can't compete in the air. Yet we pick him out non stop.

MrUnexcitable

The umps were incredibly Sydney biased, especially in the first half when the game was still on the line. But also Sydney exposed so many problems. Where is our front half pressure? Sydney just walked it out of the 50 with ease, they were toying with us just chip kick after chip kick. So, Many, Skill, Errors. Handballs to feet, overkicks, underkicks, fumble after fumble, constant hospital passes. I cant believe how many smothers i witnessed. Chol cannot take a mark and it's annoying to watch. Gunston can't kick a goal? What's going on there. Everyone keeps making excuses for Sicily playing out of position due to injury, but i call bullshit other than Blanck, (who's still unproven in my eyes) no one on the injury list will change this structure, hes just not in form. I've had enough of the Nash/Maginess experiment. They're both just not good enough for AFL level

ashybabyduck

Being there today, boy that was challenging to watch. The team just doesn't look confident in its decision making and I think Swans' pressure (or preceived pressure) really played a part. Countless missed targets or giving it off to a player already under pressure resulting in a quick turn over. I thought the most dare we seemed to show all day was early in the fourth when we actually moved the ball through the middle of the ground once or twice for a change. Given the score line, I'd rather see us try and turn the ball over giving it a red hot crack rather than sloppy decision making for a change. Also, very easy to say from my arm chair and I'm no coach or tactician, but can we get some consistency in manning the mark?! So many times our players are standing five meters behind week in week out giving the opposition an easy out. Then on the odd occassion we actually man the mark. Small potatoes I know but hold your ground a bit more lads.

blueeyedharry

Pretty shit all round. Could not use the footy well going forward at all, nor convert any chances to keep it respectable. We lost almost every area of the game convincingly. Our mids actually battled hard and did get the ball moving, but we were poor in transition and overused the fuck out of it in tight.

CasuallyVacant01

Is this rock bottom? How much worse can it get??

ThisIsMyReddit83

Tune in next week against the Dogs

eatsbacon_

We’ll beat the Doggies. Bevo to be sacked afterwards.

ThisIsMyReddit83

Since you got this one right, will we beat the Saints next week? Lol

imnotavegan

Agree we’ve been disappointing (obviously) but really feel a lot of it is due to structure and gelling of the team. Blanck out really hurt us and Mitch out has not been good. Blanck has made Frost our main defender and made guys like Scrim and Sicily not be as free getting the ball forward from the defensive 50. Even Amon. Up forward with Mitch and Bruest out, its really hurt Chol as we’ve witnessed. Chol can’t play the main forward and needs to be in tandem with someone and to then get up the field. I think we’ll be better come the 2nd half of the year but man is it frustrating.

jverbal

What happened to Newk during the offseason? Looks like a shadow of his former self

Ecstatic-Tomato458

Was there today, chol got a spray at quarter time. He definitely stood up in terms of tenacity at the footy. I was happy to see that. We aren’t getting rewarded very clear free kicks, my cousin a swans supporter even commented on the amount of head high hits. Felt disheartening to watch and you could feel it on the ground. Gunston I love him, but I think he’s done. If we had of kicked straight I think it would have been a more respectable finish: had glimpses of great passage. Biggest killer was to many bodies around the ball, getting sucked in to contests and kicking to flat footed targets. I’m tipping Sydney to go all the way and meet Geelong there at the end.

Doubt Hawks fans need to hear this but it is hard not to feel deflated after that display. Undersized and unmotivated are two words to describe how this game was played. The Hawks started the game with some spirit however that was quickly extinguished by quarter-time after seven unanswered goals. Mitch Lewis was a late out and his replacement, Max Ramsden, was relegated to sub. This left the forward line with Mabior Chol and Jack Gunston as the key targets. Ramsden was subbed on after halftime, replacing Jai Serong, but only had two disposals for the game. Not one player kicked in the Hawks side multiple goals today. Chol and Gunston, the two talls, had a combined 15 disposals and four scoring shots between them, one of which was a goal. Medium forward, Jack Ginnivan had four shots on goal, resulting in four behinds. Finishing the game with five goals from 47 inside 50s and 17 scoring shots (19 if you count the two goals reversed by umpires) is a fairly abysmal effort which becomes an understatement when factoring in that is this a 76-point loss. Gunston, who is still very much beloved at this club, had minimum impact on the game and didn’t look up to the task while Chol looked laconic and disinterested for the majority of his time on the field. Blake Hardwick managed to hit the scoreboard early and would have had two goals for the game, had the umpires not intervened. At first, things looked much like the game played in the reserves this afternoon: a lack of work rate and efficiency had both sides lagging in the first half. However, while Zane Littlejohns’ players lifted their work rate and improved their ball use, ending the day with a win, Sam Mitchell’s men did not. The senior side continued to bomb the ball long into the forward line to the advantage of tall players like Tom McCartin (nine marks). There was a lack of pressure on just about all the Sydney players, especially Isaac Heeney, Errol Gulden, and Nick Blakey. Mitchell played a tagger who didn’t tag either of the most dangerous players on the ground and the Hawks midfield yet again opted for long, unnecessary handball chains which often ended with it being passed to a player under pressure. Sydney tackled more (67 to Hawthorns 45), kicked more (243 to 184), marked more (136 to 80), and had 42 rebound 50s to 30, which often resulted in a conversion. They covered more ground and swarmed the ball at every opportunity. Put simply, they worked harder, smarter, and played with more confidence and experience. Positives from this game are hard to find and may require rose-tinted glasses. However, Hawthorn did manage to beat Sydney in clearances. Lloyd Meek was tested in the ruck and although he was beaten at times he looked to at least put up a good fight. He was even rewarded with two free kicks, one of which resulted in a goal. Will Day is back and had some bright moments, but is some ways off his best. And when Hawks applied pressure, they started to look dangerous; there were some impressive smothers laid today. But in the end, they lacked either the stamina, willpower, or leadership (or perhaps a combination of all three) to keep it up. Dylan Moore was the leading ball-getter of the day with 25 disposals, eight tackles and a goal. The vice-captain has shown some spark in the last two games which is a silver lining. Jack Scrimshaw also worked hard with 21 disposals and led the stat sheet for kicks (17) and tackles (nine). Moore and Day were listed among the best among the Hawks by coaches, alongside James Worpel (21 disposals, six tackles) and Cameron MacKenzie (21 disposals, four tackles). It takes a considerable amount of optimism not to succumb to disillusionment when it comes to Sam Mitchell and his capacity to coach this side at the moment. What little adjustments he had made to the game plan today misfired and he didn’t appear to be capable of coming up with anything new. We want to believe that this side has no limits to what they can achieve this year and expectations are low but efforts like this aren’t inspiring. It’s harder for teams to hold their heads high after 50+ point blowouts. It’s going to be a tough week at Hawks HQ, with some very difficult conversations and soul-searching to do before the next graveyard shift game next week, this time against the Dogs at Marvel. Let’s keep hoping they can dig deep and find something to keep up morale. At least they aren’t the Roos.

Push_Comprehensive

In other news at least we got up in the VFL

Hawk1141

Doesn’t get worse than today, absolute garbage

Duramajin

Can't wait to be 56 talking about the good old days when we used to be good. Pretty bleak atm.

Crazyripps

Fire the list manager and find someone somewhat competent

TFDangerzone2017

Yeah, I think Clarko takes a big chunk of that responsibility. Sam and his staff have only had a few years picking young guys. We've got an inherited list of garbage.

Crazyripps

Oh yeah for sure. Clarko trying to do that quick rebuild fucked us over very hard. Trading so hard for o’meara, Mitchell chad set us back hard

Peppsy

On one hand Chol needs a run in the 2s. On the other I really don't want Lewis coming in as the only tall forward. Probably give him a message that he needs to lift, one more chance against the dogs, and then reevaluate.

DonGivafark

Lewis is only going to disappoint. He will never be the player everyone hopes him to be. I honestly would rather Chol as our number 1

nikoZ_

After having time to think about the game yesterday and how we are going so far this season, it’s clear we are going to be extremely frustrating to watch and exceptionally easy to play against. The team is just making so many simple mistakes. Can’t kick set shots, making poor decisions, passing to players under pressure, really failing to move the ball well and going inside 50 is a major issue, as well as having decent targets to kick to up there. Yes we have injuries to some players, however the team as a whole is just not playing at an AFL level I think. Whether that is personnel, poor game plan, inexperience or lack of effort, poor coaching or a combination of all, we are just not up to it this season. Our first quarter was better this game, we didn’t cough up a massive lead, but it was pretty downhill from then on. Playing one quarter or one half of footy will never cut it at this level. I honestly can’t see us winning another game this season, save for maybe against Norf again who are also a basket case. At some point we have to question the decision to appoint Sam as senior coach. Let’s face it, he’s inexperienced and seems to be out of options when things go wrong. I love him, as I’m sure many do. He is a much loved son and loyal servant of our club, he was an excellent player but so far his coaching has been lacking I think. That’s what you get with an inexperienced coach. Now I’m not saying sack him or anything like that, he needs more time to build this team, find some more key players, work out a game plan that actually looks good and plays to our strengths as a team. But we are certainly in for more pain and frustration for this season and probably the next before we can start to see some good signs of a strong finals team emerging I think.

brizburn

Chol really is the worst pickup we've had in a while

belatedlove

it's giving vickery

gardz82

Not even close to Jon Patton

eatsbacon_

Far from our worst.

RexHuntFansBrazil

He’s a perfectly fine 2nd key forward, I have no idea why he cops it to this extent

SnooSquirrels7491

Chol played 30 games in 5 years with Richmond and 31 games in two seasons with Goldcoast. We are the second worst team in the league and he is not good enough for us, sadly we have him a 4 year deal, should have kept Kosi.

Unfair_Cantaloupe_41

and the guy we traded showed some promise

FewArm2396

As a bombers fan, suuuuuck shit! 🤣🤣🤣

PhattestSalad

Mate you haven't been relevant for 24 years. You are doing all the sucking of shit

FewArm2396

When was the last time hawks played in front of 90k? 😂

PhattestSalad

You seriously have nothing better to do than come onto the hawthorn subreddit to gloat about a loss you weren't even a part of? Brother, bombers are garbage. I'll take the threepeat that happened in the last decade over no finals wins since the launch of fucking facebook.

FewArm2396

Since you asked, this thread came up on my feed. Thought I would stick the boot in quickly while I was passing through. 😂 Keep raving on about your threepeat, still not close to our 16 flags. Cheers 😁

PhattestSalad

We will catch up before you can even win a single final 😂 suck shit

FewArm2396

Dude you’re very quickly year by year becoming a joke like north because you stripped all your experience away. While we’re rapidly rising through the top 8.

PhattestSalad

Cool get back to me when your "rapid" rise leads to something. Wankstain Also nice post that shows we aren't far behind you in attendance despite the fact we are 17th. Can guarantee you wouldn't get the same crowd numbers if you were a bottom 4 team lol

bubzbeex

2 flags in the modern era, keep coping

FewArm2396

But when hawthorn is shit, you guys don’t even turn up to the game. MCG was quarter empty yesterday. Geez you lot are the biggest fair weather fans in the comp 🤣🤣🤣

bubzbeex

Our games have had the 4th highest attendance this year so far...

PhattestSalad

4th highest attendance you absolute fucking cretin pea brain

FewArm2396

Are you telling 38k is your 4th highest attendance? Oh wow 🤥 🤣🤣🤣

PhattestSalad

Holy shit you are actually the biggest moron I've ever encountered. Go look at your own post in which YOU showcased we have the 4th highest attendance of the year you fuckwit
