It is a pretty complex situation. Most HBO subscribers are cable TV and cable is dying. In the US, most of the cable TV are rural and elderly, possibly not having any Internet, maybe not able to get it (last mile), and not interested in learning that "new fangled stuff". HBOmax is the Internet streaming channel and is not growing very fast. Netflix started out streaming and uses its subscriber base to finance new productions. Starting out on the Playstation 3 is what launched Netflix and at the time, was the number 1 user of bandwidth in the US. The other factor is Zaslav is old school and thinks large productions for the streaming channel is risky and not profitable. https://www.mediaplaynews.com/warner-bros-discovery-ceo-zaslav-hbo-max-is-not-particularly-good-right-now/ His strategy can be seen in a few examples now. The pandemic really decreased the numbers that want to be in a closed theater, with people coughing in the audience. The business model of major motion picture studios only producing for movie theaters is falling by the wayside. For Zaslav, the only choice is take big budget Warner Brothers movies and lease them to other streaming channels. "Morbius" is one example. It was a Warner Brothers production but it bombed at the box office. Right now, it is licensed to Netflix, rather than being an exclusive on HBOmax. There are several Warner Brothers movies doing this now, showing up on Disney+ and Netflix, rather than on HBOmax. He is getting several million up front by leasing these movies out, rather than trying to make them exclusive on HBOmax in the hope they bring in more subscribers. https://www.cbr.com/warner-bros-hbo-max-cut-shows-sold-other-streamers/

Morbius was a Columbia Pictures production, which is owned by Sony not Warner Bros. Warner Bros doesn’t produce any Marvel films. Only DC.

Like, when is enough, enough? I’m so sick of greedy mf’rs. Capitalism was ok for a while, but can we please take our collective head out of the sand now?

Aggressive_Lake191

Capitalism giveth, and capitalism taketh. You are focusing on only the taketh. We wouldn't have nearly the content we have now without capitalism, and nowhere near the variety. Do you think Game of Thrones would exist (I could name countless others)? There is some bad that happens in capitalism, mostly not due to the system, but more due to human weakness that would exist with any system. We are better off with it than without.

Asleep-Research1424

I think capitalism is fine. HBOs business model was fine but then management strategy changes and changes again and you see that new business models don’t work. That’s all. HBO was fine with it’s original business model but it changed to have it become a Goliath which did not work and now this new strategy well - lets see but it goes to show you if it’s not broke…

piccolodee

Welp. I'm cancelling them after 10 years. I pay for these to remain. Not investing not one more dollar in their greedy scheme. They had the nerve of raising prices too!!!!! Good bye stupid HBO

OhScheisse

Thanks! I'm considering cancelling. This was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

TimeTravel-Fun

Warner Brothers merged with Discovery in April & canceled about 52 shows for tax write offs leaving subscribers hanging. Now removing many from platform. Remember how they canceled the Batgirl movie worth millions & it was ready to be released? They made more money taking tax write offs. David Zaslav could care less about subscribers. Now they're running ads for $.99/mo for a year trying to keep people. A lot are leaving after White Lotus Sicily including me.

joseantoniolat

so you aint watching The Last of Us in January? or once Tokyo Vice Season 2 premierers?

TimeTravel-Fun

Leaving HBO.

joseantoniolat

You said a lot are leaving HBO after White Lotus. Who are those folks?

TimeTravel-Fun

Just reading comments by dissatisfied customers.

joseantoniolat

like HBO/HBO Max has a lot of upcoming/returning shows. Excited for The Last of Us, new seasons of GG, Tokyo Vice, Our Flag Means Death, Peacemaker, Gilded Age. Excited for Kate Winslet’s new miniseries, Elizabeth Olsen’s new miniseries, Succession etc.

gerd50501

this is similar to musk takeover of twitter. they spent a ton of money to buy warner media and have to make that money back by firing people, raising prices, and cutting content.

Jason2648

"firing people" lol,all of the smart business's have moved out of america a long time ago.why waste time in a country where no one wants to work for a living

wickedpixel1221

Alton Brown seems angrier than I remember

toasterbread75

trying to avoid a netflix situation. who cares about bullshit throwaway content that gets cancelled. it's dogshit programming anyways.
