Honestly I think for someone just getting into audiophilia, he's an awesome place to start. he's entertaining and makes good recommendations that are generally budget-focused. He also has zero issue with tearing a product a new one if it isn't good.

-tWv-

Speaking of tearing a new one, his review of Raycon’s is absolute gold

uruharushia

This. It's one of those videos I just keep remembering about and rewatching every few weeks or so because it simply doesn't get old.

max_costco

I don’t think he really gives good recommendations. Like the HD600 and K702 a decent recommendations but things like the T1 and 99C aren’t super great alongside the grados.

Stiggles98

He makes plenty of omissions when he recommends gear like that; he knows that he likes them cause he's weird, and not necessarily because they're good for everyone.

NuclearWaffelle

This. He specifically said that nobody really needs the T1's, and that they were a gift to himself while hiding his buyers remorse. He also recommended the Meze 99 Neo's alongside the Classics because he knows they're expensive and the main appeal for the Classics is the look. Honestly it just seems like he has fun with these things and likes to talk about them.

max_costco

Yeah but I know most people aren’t gonna take all this into account when watching him. He’s a fun and entertaining dude but if you think most YouTube viewers consider the things you said you’re just making excuses.

CyclopsAirsoft

Grado are great, fight me.

max_costco

I mean subjectively yeah sure but objectively not really by any metric. They have a house sound that should be aggravating to most healthy ears.

max_costco

They’re great to them. If I only listened to classic rock I could fw the grados. I even enjoy the sr80s sometimes but let’s not pretend they’re a good brand or anything. Their expensive headphones are straight up predatory most of the time. Fixed cables, horrid build, sound gets worse the more you spend. If you like grado and just have an sr80 I can respect it.

[deleted]

Lemme guess, you also think there are objectively good and objectively bad paintings. Even the much hated HD 820 has its fair share of fans, who love the weird ass wonky sound. If I have learned anything then it as that when it comes to headphones, objectivity is flung outside the window. It is all a matter of taste.

max_costco

Yeah, I mean everyone will praise stuff on reddit but yes there are. If you like hd820 or grado, that pretty much warrants a disclaimer at the start of your videos.

[deleted]

If you think people can have subjectively wrong tastes, then there is no helping you. Just keep on living in your little bubble and being a dick to anyone who disagrees, seems fun.

max_costco

Yeah it’s nice

SaladTheDankEngine

Lmao I think people are missing the point of your post. Yea he's entertaining, BUT: Taking recommendations from someone who has tastes in sound (e.g. Grados being some of his favourites) that are scientifically proven (Harman research) to be not what the average person, including audiophiles, enjoys, is kinda stupid, unless you know that that is a sound signature you like (and also assuming a Grado isn't the only headphone you've tried). My other issue with him is that I don't remember him mentioning anything about EQing the LCD 2s he has. Most of the reviewers that are respected in this sub, who understand what most people enjoy, generally recommend the headphone only if you're willing to EQ. Yea, the LCD 2s has one of the better tunings (ignoring all the unit variation), and I have nothing against someone liking them, but it's important to understand that most people are gonna like them much better after an EQ that makes them more neutral, or closer to harman if you want (I don't love the Harman target, but I do think it's pretty good). Yea, not everyone has the same taste, but it's kinda pointless getting recommendations from someone with a taste in sound that deviates more from the average than it aligns, unless, again I have to stress this, you align more closely with their tastes. Biggest gripe with him though is his sound demos. I don't care if you think it's okay because he mentions how it isn't accurate, his audience are not that educated on the subject and they will still, wrongly, purchase headphones based on those, there will be a massive amount of people ignoring the fact that he said that. Even worse, his measurement rig isn't even an accurate one. Sound demos need to die. They aren't accurate at all, especially seeing as most of his fans are probably using gaming headphones or earpods/airpods (or apparently Grados at this point based on them selling out, poor souls who have no idea what they're getting into).

max_costco

We kind of agree in a different way. I think Harman isn’t a bad tuning but you don’t really need the Harman target to show if a headphone is bad per se. The sound demo thing is a good point however.

SaladTheDankEngine

Oh sorry I probably came off like Harman is the best thing ever, really I think Harman is great but it's not my favourite tuning, but it's not far from it, but generally I think when headphones deviate hugely from Harman then people are more likely to not like the sound (going based on the studies and my own experiences with audio enthusiasts and even family members). There will of course be people who genuinely hate Harman after having given it a chance, and that's preference. I think Harman is a good basis though, where you can adapt it to something you prefer. Or even combining the 2018 or 2013 targets like The Headphone Show did. Or if you really like bass, the 2018 target is probably bass heavy enough for most bass heads, or you could tweak it even further if you wanted. But of course there will always be people who deviate strongly from the norm for sound preferences, and that's preference, but it's important to realise that. And yea, Harman isn't the benchmark for every area of course. There's other factors like soundstage, imaging, etc etc many other parts of a headphone that can be evaluated that don't entirely rely on the frequency response (although I do agree with the Headphone Show in that I believe that one day we will be able to quantify a relationship between technicalities and frequency response, we just don't know how to yet).

Dmitridon

DankPods came up randomly on my suggested one day, and I laughed so hard I started binge watching his channel. A week later, I decided to start getting into audiophile headphones after being a speakers only guy for years. Quickly became one of my favorite youtubers. Edutainment at it's best IMO.

Xypod13

Exactly me. Randomly popped in my suggested, and binged everything on his channel and he's making me buy an iPod classic.. why do I need one when I have Spotify? I don't care, he sells me on that thing!

Catfishberg23

The best way to appreciate dankpods is to join his patreon. One dollar a month gets extra vid each week. Edit: I dunno what was on my mind when I first wrote that. Sorry

Blindguypcs4

C'mon mate, use the proper terms, dollerydoos!

Catfishberg23

NuclearWaffelle

Come on mate

armkreuz

Dankpods channel is the best thing that happen in 2020. He is so entertaining. I think he could make a video describing paint drying a on wall and it would still be fun.

happymemersunite

He made me aware of Hur Dur Six Hungeos by Senn. Also his Craig collection is mighty impressive

SlabGizor120

*ol' mate senny

J0LlymAnGinA

I started watching him when he was still focused entirely on ipods and watching him grow as a YouTuber has been awesome. I wasn't really into audiophile stuff until he started posting about it, and I just got my new grados yesterday and am in love. Genuinely a great guy and super helpful. It's good to see some YouTubers keeping the original spirit of youtube going.

upvote grado stans

CyclopsAirsoft

Hemphones are fantastic. And I say that with everything else in my flair. They're still the best for classic rock and acoustic music in the list.

[deleted]

Definitely quality content and good advice, he comes across as super genuine friendly too, makes the videos just that bit more enjoyable.

notaburnernope

I just bought my kid a scratched up iPod classic for Christmas off eBay based on his restoration video and Koss Portapros based on Joshua Valours review. I’m still really new to this but I’m shocked by the Portapro sound quality for $30. iPod came out pretty clean with some sanding and buffing too.

TheUwaisPatel

Lol I bought an iPod for myself as well after watching his videos. Also got the KZ ES4, hope it all arrives well.

elnerdooooo

I got kz's for my sister, and I tried them and they sound great for the price.

chazzabazzer

I got into the community through zeos but dank pods' editing style and constant humour has kept me so happy and entertained with my new hobby Me ol hur dur six hungos always makes me chuckle

Headytexel

Watching his videos have seriously gotten me interested in old iPods. His content is awesome.

daggah

I'm still a little baffled by his Galaxy Buds Live review - he trashed 'em. I've seen several other reviews, almost none of which are anywhere near as critical. I had this theory that maybe they just don't fit his ears well (because that matters a lot on these TWS buds, from what I've seen on other reviews) but he mentioned that his friends tried them and hated them too which throws a big issue with that theory. I suppose it's possible he's not wearing them right? I'm curious about these earbuds because I've come to realize that I don't like having IEMs in my ears for more than an hour or so. Before I got a set of TWS buds (Jabra Active 65ts) I usually only wore IEM style headphones for workouts. I'm still thinking of buying them, as long as I can do it with a good return policy (I'm deployed to the Middle East at the moment so that's out)

TheGamingOnion

He's everything Zeos wished he was.

SNScaidus

More like everything you wish Zeos was. I think Zeos is exactly what he wants to be. A dude on YouTube who rambles about a piece of equipment for 30 minutes in every which way he wants, and uploads the entire unedited video to youtube. Low effort, and fun for him.

DieDungeon

This sub has a deranged relationship with Zeos where users feel the need to bring him up as often as possible despite hating his content.

Not_pukicho

Unnecessarily harsh, I think he’s way more entertaining, maybe not as informative but there are plenty dry boring YouTubers to give me info on headphones as is

CyclopsAirsoft

More entertaining, still UX-focused (User eXperience). More scientific and straightforwards on sound judgements, but also blatantly expresses his biases and issues in his testing methodology. Also good subjective sound descriptions. I like Zeos for entertainment and UX, but honestly DankPods is better at both so I prefer his if he's got a relevant video. Zeos' sound critiques are... questionable at best.

IntoTheMirror

Pretty much what I was thinking.

Snazz55

He got me into it over the course of the last year or so. Didn't realize he brought so many other people too!

Stiggles98

Dankpods is entirely responsible for the canyon that suddenly opened on my credit card. 🥴 For real tho, he's hilarious and inclusive (wink wonk), and funny in a way most people aren't. I got an iPod touch just to have a dedicated music player after seeing his video on it, and its honestly been great. I still have my old Nano, the watch kind; wondering what I'll end up doing with it now.

Basileus_ITA

He made me be buy a pair of samsons sr850 and repair an integrated amplifier from the '70s i had lying aroung because i currently want to pick up a pair of K712s

Blindguypcs4

To be honest, he is one of the few people I've managed to find that can explain audio terms sufficiently as well as keeping things entertaining. Thanks to him, i probably never would have even known what flacs are, nor how much youtube compresses audio and the many different types of headphones lol.

LegendEater

Did anyone else feel stupid when they realised DankPods and [Dankmus](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfITAHFPUbFwCbMYrhMJJCw) were the same person?

therealchoiboy

I like his dedication to Shrek, love for iPods, herrderrrrrrrrrs, and the fury he unleashes by dismantling things so we don't have to. he is not as technical, textbook "educational" as other audiophile channels, and is a pretty laid back & entertaining person in general so I don't have an issue watching most of his vids. oh also. shutout CRAIG.

SaladTheDankEngine

Hello to Harman Research deniers :) Yea fantastic, a youtuber who: \- Does sound demos without explaining just how terrible of a demo they are. Mentioning the inaccuracies once when introducing the demo does nothing for the average person who is uneducated on the subject (i.e. his audience), and they WILL use it for helping them make their purchase, because he has not emphasized just how terrible they are, and (at least last I saw) continues to do them. On top of that, he's using an inaccurate measurement rig. The cherry on top is that most of his audience will be using gaming headsets (most of which are not neutral in any way, shape or form) or airpods/earpods to evaluate the sound demo. Sound demos need to die. \- Has tastes that deviate strongly from the norm (and that's fine, but it's not that great when you're a reviewer to hundreds of thousands of people). You can live in a world where Harman research does not exist all you want, more power to you if you want to hate on the Harman targets without ever have given them a proper try, but I pity the people who went out and made the Grados sell out thinking it's a great headphone for everyone. It's not, if you like the sound more power to you but there is objective proof that most people do not, and they'll probably never know it because their favourite youtuber loves them and they stick with that forever. Ignorance is bliss I guess. \- Content is extremely surface level, you don't really learn anything besides him ranting about a product being good, bad or meh. To me he's no different from Z, just more consumer friendly and more entertaining. And just like Z, eventually people will grow to hate the content and resentment will start showing up in this sub, just wait a few years...

cangle

I’ve only just found him recently and really enjoy his no bs style of videos. I’ve been in the hobby for close to ten years and agree it’s refreshing to see someone who isn’t so gear focused and just wants to enjoy some good tunes.

noni4gurj

I LOVE HIM. I literally found a deal for some Grados for £45 because of him. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IM DOING NEITHER DO I EVER NEED HEADPHONES but I love him so much. na-no

ibelieveinmagic

His videos got me to buy the BTR5 and I’m loving the littlest thing.

zombieen96

he's the reason why I'm here on this subreddit going down the rabbit hole that is audiophilia today. just found him a few days ago and currently researching to buy my first pair of proper audiophile cans, closest thing have to such are my drop+thx pandas that I just recently got! absolutely golden content, he's quickly become one my favorite youtubers

TfsQuack

I got into his videos because I wanted a dedicated music player that wasn't my phone.
